THE LATEST EP WAS JUST WOW. I love the whole gang and cop moment. like the gangsters are all so tough yet funny at the same time. especially when they went from "what is that brat doing to his chest" to "dr cha, we will serve you from now on!" LMAO and also how Mr Koo frightened the gang members ("what's a bear doing in a hospital..")

Not gonna lie, Dr Park is getting a little on my nerves. I understand he's trying to reform doldam and make it prim and proper, but like, we don't need that. doldam is fine the way it is, there isn't a need for protocols and SOPs, it isn't a big city hospital, there isn't a need for procedures like that ugh. and his little assistant is just annoying sigh.

Love love love eunjae's scenes in this ep. it's a breakthrough for her when she managed to do an op by herself. Thanks to Master Kim for believing in her which made her believe in herself!

I do see a tiny development in the love line of our leads. Aside from Dr Bones who is so cute and oh so oppar, i LOLed when woojin stared at eunjae for a moment and was like "do you have a crush on me?" LOL. it's hard to tell if the question is genuine or just to get her off his back about the loan sharks..

But man the final scene tho?! On one hand I'm like "if someone's holding a penknife, you don't play hero and just go in front omg" but then again it's a kdrama but on the other hand, I'm glad that happened (not because I want eunjae to be hurt or i'm a sadist lol) but because it gives lots of opportunity for the love line between eunjae and woojin to developed!!! I'm pretty sure this is a turning point for their relationship and maybe woojin will start to be proactive in his interest towards her since he almost lost her in his arms sigh~

Looking forward for the next ep, really hoping it'll kickstart our long awaited romance!!! ^^

her strong reaction to domestic violence, maybe it struck too close to home and her mum raised her as a single parent.

i've never thought about this but wow it seemed likely! it's like so far, she has only mentioned her mom and we have no idea where her dad is. plus, in her notebook she wrote that if she dropped out of med school, it'll make her mom sad. no mentioned of her dad at all.. so there is a possibility that she might be raised by her mom only which explains how close she is to her mom.

it's nice that it isn't just the male lead that has a sad backstory, our female lead is the same too. ultimately, both have struggled to get to where they are now and it's nice to see how far they've become.

Sigh... when i see how advanced the medical knowledge on those surgeries, i do wonder how good our medical service is at home... im sure if anyone goes to the emergency, fatality rate is higher coz u know...they have to go for the triage first, if they dont see any blood on you... haiz...

Im just amazed that you can cut someone's chest and the blood will eventually stop (i thought it goes out forever until it is zipped back!) and you can see the organs inside to operate it quite easily, even outside of the OR...just like what Eun Jae did earlier... amazing

Thanks heaps. Yes. I thought I heard 500 units because both sets of subs used a lower dose and rates were wrong. I didn't trust myself to change the lines. But the only reason I could make out anything was literally  because it was Master Kim. Hahaha. I wasn't kidding the actor has great diction. My nitpicking self sighed with episode 5. So many wrong medication doses. But I finally came to the conclusion- we are subbing- the writer is a writer. Thank you for the extra lines on charcoal.

This drama should never be done at night. I lost count but episode 5 and 6 had between them-

1. Unconscious child- high dose insulin therapy and intubation

2. Unconscious male 1: cardiac tamponade, intubation and open chest in ED. Forgot the ultrasound guided tap.

3. Unconscious male 2: GSW liver with shock. Intubated.

4. Unconscious child 2: overdose with so many complications

5. Female 1: domestic violence

6. Male and female: FB back and GSW knee?

7. Male 4: femur fracture and recreational drug use

8. Doctor 1: assault- neck laceration with likely carotid vessels involvement

Did I miss anything? Man we would love to hit all those at once just to see staff shrieking.

9. Female 2: facial lacerations and FB glass. Who then does a random dance. Why?

All in all not a relaxing evening. And FYI, smaller institutions are more protocols and traditions bound than bigger ones. Where else smaller places have a " leader " and it's damn frustrating doing anything out of the norm.

Thanks @stroppyse very much. I am never going to be great in Korean. But when I am optimistic at least it always helps me learn new words- not the medical ones- to increase my vocabulary.

I just laughed when I wasn't cringing/cursing/ listening at all that with just 9 medical staff.

Yes still watching. There is no reason why I can't like the drama itself for the plot. And Master Kim. And then at the same time go " omg " at the medical stuff. Then like the pacing. The surgery scenes are actually well done.

I am actually going back to my New Year prep today so see you all next week.

Everything was entertaining until the last scene. Not being wicked, but i hope the little boy doesn't survive. He doesn't deserve to live with such dysfunctional parents.

Hmm... that is similar to what our young lead doctor, SWJ heard  when he was in the same situation like the patient.  I wonder how he grew up and inspired to become a doctor. Most probably related to the doctor in the previous episodes.

I thought the boy died and the older sister is the one that survived? He was talking to a teenage girl, wasn't he?

I was surprised that Dr.Kim knows how to make drugs specially something that can cure Dr. Cha's illness. Im glad that he was able to help her coz it seems like she really wants to be a doctor for her mom.

I also love the mom-daughter conversation. She was so happy to share her OR story with her mom she sounds like a kid bragging about her accomplishments, sweet. And Dr. Bones wanting to have some drink with her, I hope this wont go unnoticed by Dr. Seo.

I'm pretty sure those pills were placebos. Reminded me of House MD when the doctor substitutes the real painkillers with tictacs...

In fact, I wondered why ep 6 was titled "Placebo" because I wasn't sure it was referring to what.

I also believe that it was just placebo pills.  Master Kim knows best.  I thought he's going to tell her or talk about it in the previous episode. Now the situation has changed since she's physically hurt so I guess it will take some more episodes before we know the truth.

The technical stuffs have its hits and misses, I am also following the storylines which share the general outline as S1 but different enough.  I was not sure why S2 has to be made and was not surprised that something remained the same.  Guess it's time to remind us again about hard work, sacrifices, overcoming your weakness/faults (accountability!), social pressure/bullying... all about how to stand up for justice, courage, believe and your own convictions.  I did laugh at the Friday chaos... wow.  I shoved it in the back of my head my annoyance over lack of face shield protection/gowns during the trauma scenes.  Not many that I know would keep on their doctor's gown on in the ER during triage.  And ended up pristine white too

@stroppyse thanks for the translation.  My subs were a little off.  Just to be technical, the usual insulin drip would be 100u/100ml but it's fine to do 500u/500ml, just that no MD would shout out rate without the concentration since he is deviating from the standard, huge medical risk of wrong dose.  In any case, it was good that Master Kim checked blood sugar beforehand.

Can someone double check for me @nrllee (Hiii)?  I thought we are seeing two different families?  The girl was given CCB (nifedipine) - father's own medicine- in an attempt of murder suicide (he jumped after poisoned her).  The boy suffered a drug error by his mom (whose good intention was to give him Tylenol for his fever).  I am unsure if she too was thinking of murder suicide (because of her husband's abuse) when she gave him all those pills (hard to believe that any mom would not question the amount of pills but then I am not sure if the writer intends to show that she couldn't read the instructions).   In any case, both fathers hurt their children through their mistreatments of their families.  For the boy's mom, she refused help for a while, her lashing out at the end was from years of abuse and accidentally hurt someone else.

Woo-Jin found some closure with the case.  I disagree with his decision for not saving the father  (OK, the Hippocratic Oath, yes...) though I find it more realistic to see him force the abuser to experience the aftermath of his action.  Really, physicians are humans, not god... many decisions are sometimes personally weighted.  I think it is not wrong to see mistakes and vices in the medical profession even in our protagonists.  Woo-Jin needed to address what his father/the boy's father did.   I also like the start of this drama with Dr. Park.

About the placebo effect.  I also don't think her mom is alive.  For the many reasons that Eun Jae chose medicine (why surgery when she could have chosen dermatology or something surgical non-related fields given her aversion for blood?), it probably has to due with a traumatic past in the hospital.  Given the current tech driven high salary, there is less and less incentives to go into the healthcare field without being connected to the altruistic cause of it - you incur tons of debts and years of studying in the process.

I love that Dr. Bae recited exactly what Eun-Jae remembered in med school.  Back then, for some reasons, they didn't have that get together.  I don't know if Dr. Bones remembered the convo exactly but Eun Jae melts knowing she has a second chance to do something her shy self passed on.  BTW, I love Shin Dong-Wook, he often has these gentle roles that fit him well.  Dr Bae is too eccentric to be husband material, he is destined to be a lifelong resident crush!

@nrllee, I like how the drama presents Dr Park - someone who apparently is not guided by this vocation calling (he escaped the bus to save himself - fair enough, many would) and possibly be in it for the money and fame.  He takes the Doldam challenge, part is for that competitive and ambitious streak (managing/learning ? from the famed Kim Sabu), part because he needs to overcome/ to prove perhaps that he is a better person/MD to one person who saw his less than stellar public image years ago.  Episode 6 is titled "Placebo", I think it is also meant for Dr. Park who needed to understand about using his skills for good.  Overcoming his logical brain, stop analyzing risks vs. benefits and respond to patients at a human level.  There's lack of personal courage here, the fear of showing less than perfect confident public image... yes, it's about how insecure he feels around others.  He's also one that needed to be himself at Doldam too.  Instead of the placebo pills that Eun Jae took, Park Min-Kook needed to overcome this fear of failure by taking on Dr. Kim's challenge of operating on a pt that has poor prognosis.  Dr Park doesn't want to risk failing to damage his reputation so it was imperative for him to beat the odds in this patient to begin shifting his thinking.  Although I think he would learn more if he had failed (maybe we will see in future episodes).  But for now, we needed to see his risk assessment be proven wrong.  In reality, taking a placebo should not change the natural progress of something so Dr Park has nothing to lose if he operated.  Dr. Kim knew that. I also like how Dr. Park learned to work with someone who is still learning (Woo-Jin) whom he considered not at his level hahaha.

BTW, since you've watched Life, I like how this drama is going the same route.  Medicine is economically fueled.  There's nothing wrong with realizing that it is at a crossroad and our generation has to balance cost against treatments.  Hospitals cannot sustain itself through charity but society will suffer if we think only in terms of money.  It's true that Doldam needs someone like Dr Park. Dr Yeo's way of thinking would not sustain Doldam for the small towns that rely on it.  Doldam needs some structure (wouldn't any ER or OR be better with some sort of triage or protocols on days like Fridays?).  The staff fears Fridays for many reasons ... the hospital needs a plan in place (with enough staff) instead of operating in crisis.  In the long run, it's better for the people who work there and it benefits the patients that come through.  Take for example, Dr. Kim who had to lead two OR ... it's cool to see him rise to the challenge. But he is human, he can't do this alone, his body and mind won't and shouldn't be able to handle it (his age, his wrist, etc..)  He himself even admits to losing patients so the risks are real for him not able to save all.  Doldam needs a financial overhaul.  Who covers its cost when it hemorrhages day in and out?  Dr Park is here for a reason.  He just needs to find those reasons to fight for Doldam... we are here to see his journey.  Every hospital needs a president so I am glad Doldam gets a qualified one who is also an excellent physician and who can see the issues from the doctor's POV too.

I salute Dr Cha when she bravely corner the high and mighty Dr Yang in front of the Minister's son and Dr Park Min Kook...that's was the best moment of the entire episode...Kudos to Dr Cha and this might just be the waking up call to her to devote herself to Doldam and not see-saw hoping to "buy" her way back to Geodae. Am glad she tells Master Kim her fear in OR but she's ok in ER.  Kudos Dr Cha

Dr Seo losing his parents could have made him cold and not trusting easily or opening up on his feelings thoughts easily.  The image of his parents dead could be a blocking image in his mind that makes him hard to trust others. However, I salute the way he thinks thru and quick on his feet esp the 2nd Surgery where he was asked about the 1st Surgery pre-op procedure, etc etc.  Strangely Dr Seo reminds me much of Dr Kang of Season 1... strong headed yet good with their skills and no matter what happens within their own personal window...they give their all to patients.

I like LSK, nice to see her doing her things here.  The first few episodes were hard to watch in regard to Eun-Jae, I like E5-6 much better.  Most of all for her perseverance, kindness, and sense of ethics.  She knows her weaknesses, knows that she may not be the best surgeon out there but is always a champion for right vs wrong.  Even when she thought she was played by Woo-Jin, she didn't give up on herself.  I really like that she apologized to him afterward.  Surgeons (there's actually a hierarchy, cardiothoracic are up there in skill set and prestige hehhh) often have gritty mental toughness to be good QBs in the OR, to make quick correct decisions.  Eun-Jae is far from it, even Woo-Jin is still learning, but her mental confidence doesn't have to be all out arrogance (ahem Dr Park). I like that her character is warm like sunshine   Woo-Jin needs to be more emotive, he's tsundere for a reason.  For all the baggages that he has to carry, his determination and mental toughness for survival as an orphan gave him the potential to be a good physician. But that is not what will make him a happier person who knows his purpose in life.   He also needs to be a team player instead of a lone wolf!

@bedifferent I stopped watching S2.  Can’t remember which episode but I don’t think I watched the episode with the boy yet.  I binged S1 instead and realized that it was the way to go with S2 (I can then fast forward scenes I am not particularly interested in).  So sorry but I can’t inject any insights into your question.   I haven’t gotten to the part where Dr Park comes to Doldam yet.  Also currently traveling so won’t be back till mid Feb and I have to content myself to just read spoilers and posts of dramas I have been watching.

Yes to the exploration of how to talk “money” in a “service” industry.  It’s a very real problem for every hospital.  S1 solved that with the Casino Chairman.  I think the fact that this drama is named Dr Romantic has already set the tone.  Kim SaBu is the romanticized version of every man’s ideal doctor.  Skilled beyond belief.  Always working for the good of the patient.  Unwavering in his convictions.  He’s the ideal to aim for and he mentors other doctors to walk his path.  But I like that he also realizes that a hospital needs funds to survive.  So it would be interesting to see how he navigates Dr Park in S2.  From the sounds of it (your description), he doesn’t look to be a “bad” guy.  Maybe someone with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

 I agree wholeheartedly.  He’s “married” to his specimens.  He seems plenty happy in his little solipsistic world of bones.

haha suddenly there are so many cute faces in Doldam Hospital. keeping me very busy on my tv too

i’m keeping my fingers crossed that Dr. Park Min Guk will switch to Teacher Kim’s camp much sooner in the earlier episodes than till the end.. you know the bus scene, it’s been tugging on his mind ever since. he probably just needs a bit more nudges to steer away from that evil Chairman Do :unamused: and the whole team that Dr. Park brought with him.. such selfish people.. that anesthesiologist in particular, the stuck up and fear trouble attitude i feel like kicking her every time she appears onscreen!!

I am respecting Season 2 though Season 1 will never be off my heart! Anyway, hoping Barley Couple with Dr Yang despite their respective schedules, can they reprise their role please :)

I love the new “patients” of Kim Sabu. - Dr Park, Dr Cha and Dr Seo.  I know they will be healed soon too by Kim Sabu’s eccentric healing! Haha Chairman Do will never learn! Hahaha but I hope the three new patient will learn really! They have so many pride in their hearts :(

The staff of Doldam hospital specially the new partners in crime in ER Dr Jeong, Dr Yoon with ortho Dr Bae! Plus our loyal Kim Sabu team Nurse Oh, Nurse Park, Dr Nam, Chief Jang :) and Mr Gu! Weeeee :)
