rubie
September 16, 2019 SONG Kang-ho and LEE Byung-hun to Take Flight in EMERGENCY DECLARATION Superstars Team Up for THE KING Director HAN Jae-rim’s New Project by Pierce Conran KOFIC Superstars SONG Kang-ho and LEE Byung-hun are set to team up for the fourth time in the upcoming aviation disaster drama Emergency Declaration (translated title) from The King (2017) director HAN Jae-rim. The project is described as a disaster film set on a plane. One of Korea’s most beloved actors, SONG Kang-ho recently appeared in BONG Joon-ho’s PARASITE, which became the first Korean film to pick up the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival this year. He also featured in the period drama The King’s Letters this summer. rubie
October 9, 2019 ‘Parasite’ Star Song Kang-ho Has No Hollywood Plans Joan MacDonald Forbes Song Kang-ho is perhaps Korea’s most relatable actor. Whether he’s playing a studious monarch in The King’s Letters, investigating crime in Bong Joon-ho’s Memories of Murder, or embodying the down-on-his-luck Kim Kae-taek in Bong’s latest film Parasite, Song demonstrates an unusual talent for emotionally connecting with viewers. That ability has earned him dozens of prestigious awards, including most recently being the first Asian actor to receive an Excellence Award at 72nd Locarno International Film Festival. Spoiler Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, and is South Korea’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, has been described as an ensemble film, but Song is mesmerizing as the patriarch of the Kim family, whose only scheme for success may be to con the rich but naive Park family. It’s the fourth time Song has acted in a film directed by Bong. “There’s a lot of good chemistry between Director Bong and I,” said Song, while visiting New York City for the 57th New York International Film Festival. In Bong’s 2006 ecological horror film The Host, Song plays a man whose daughter is kidnapped by a monster. In Bong’s sci-fi futuristic film Snowpiercer, Song plays a poor man relegated to the rear of the super train that is humanity’s only hope. The actor and director enjoy working together. “I think the message he wants to convey in his films is very moving and also at the same he elicits performances that are very extraordinary,” said Song. “I think that combination is what makes him remarkable.” While Bong’s films are known for embodying social issues, such as protecting the environment, promoting animal rights, or making society more equitable, Song says he does not choose his roles based on their social messages. “I personally don’t like propaganda films,” he said. “Art has to be good for its own sake even when reflecting reality. All of Bong’s films have a strong sense of story to them and that’s what makes them so real and so beautiful.” In Parasite his character may be poor and lacking opportunities, but he still has his dignity. “When you look at the character I play, I don’t think he is a very unusual character,” said Song. “There’s nothing odd about him. He’s an ordinary character that can exist anywhere. The character is poor, but he tries very hard, and yet his desires are not fulfilled. It’s easy to identify with him.” Although Kim Ki-taek calmly makes the most of his limited circumstances, he’s eventually driven to a violent act, which might cause viewers to wonder what circumstances would justify such a response. The film does not answer the question for viewers, but for Kim Ki-taek, that uncrossable line is an affront to his dignity as a human being. “The final answer lies in everyone’s hearts,” said Song. “I do think that it’s a film about human dignity and certain lines are crossed that infringe upon that dignity. There’s a certain resistance that lies in this character, a point of resistance that lies in everyone.” Despite the recognition he’s earned as an actor and his friendship with fellow creatives, Song considers acting a lonely profession. “It’s not just me,” said Song.”I think this also applies to Hollywood actors and actresses. When you stand in front of the camera, it’s a very, very lonely moment. There is no one to help you out. Everybody can only stand by to watch, so that’s what makes it challenging and painful as well.” Working in theater helped the critically acclaimed actor to cultivate his acting skills. “I did not have my acting skills trained in a professional school but I always appeared on theatrical stages ever since I was young,” said Song. “That’s how I gradually trained in my acting capacity. It wasn’t a long training but it was very intense.” Starring in a film that’s up for an Academy Award has not convinced the veteran actor that he wants to move to Hollywood. “I would like to pass on that opportunity to other actors,” said Song. “I think in such films I would disappear, so I will instead continue to use Korean films such as Parasite to express myself.” Song’s next film, Emergency Declaration, also features Lee Byung-hun, who appears in several Hollywood productions, including Red2 and Terminator: Genysis. The actors previously worked together in Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area and Kim Jee-woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird. “It’s a very commercial film of the disaster genre,” said Song. Song’s Emergency Declaration character will have to deal with an aviation disaster. It may be a different genre, but Song will do his best to make that character oh-so-easy to relate to.
rubie
November 12, 2019 Lee Byung-hun Does Double Duty With Disaster FilmsJoan MacDonald FORBES Lee Byung-hun’s fans will have several chances to see him onscreen in the coming year, as he stars in three films, each of which features a storyline sure to get the adrenaline pumping. He appears in the disaster film Mt. Baekdu, which aims for a late 2019 or early 2020 release, as well as the political thriller, Chiefs of Namsan, aka The Man Standing Next, which aims for a release on Dec. 31. His next film, Emergency Declaration, another disaster film, plans to start production in early 2020. Chiefs of Namsan is set in Korea in the 1970s. Lee plays a former Korean Central Intelligence Agency chief who becomes involved in assassinating the president. Actor Lee Sung-min plays President Park and Kwak Do-won plays another ex-KCIA officer. Woo Min-ho, who directed Lee in the film Inside Men, also directs Chiefs of Namsan, making this Lee’s most anticipated role of the year. Under Woo’s direction Lee’s role in Inside Men won him the Best Actor prize at the 52nd Baeksang Art Awards, 37th Blue Dragon Awards and 53rd Grand Bell Awards. Lee also plays an intelligence officer in the disaster film Mt. Baekdu, only in that film he’s a North Korean agent. The film imagines a fictional eruption of Mt. Baekdu, an active volcano on the Chinese - North Korean border. Mt. Baekdu last erupted in 1903 and since it emits lava about every 100 years, its expected to flare up again soon. Although recent real-life eruptions have been minor, the fictional eruption is set to happen on a cataclysmic scale. The characters played by Lee and his co-stars—Ha Jung-woo, Jeon Hye-jin, Ma Dong-seok and Bae Suzy—must do what they can to prevent disaster. Ha plays a member of a South Korean explosive detonation team, while Ma plays a geology professor who predicts the eruption. Despite their different approaches and political affiliations, the characters work together to forestall catastrophe. Mt. Baekdu is directed by Lee Hae-joon, who also directed Castaway on the Moon. Lee is already preparing for his next disaster film, Emergency Declaration. His co-star in that film is actor Song Kang Ho, who stars in Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite. Song and Lee worked together on three previous films, Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area and in two of Kim Jee-woon’s films: The Good, the Bad, the Weird and The Age of Shadows. Emergency Declaration will give Lee a chance to cope with catastrophe in a new environment, since the action in the C-Jes film takes place on a plane. An unforeseen event forces the pilots to make an emergency declaration and be forced to land their plane. Emergency Declaration is directed by Han Jae-rim, who directed The Face Reader and The King. Lee has dozens of Korean films and dramas to his credit and he’s appeared in a few Hollywood productions. His film work also includes A Bittersweet Life; and Masquerade; plus both the film and TV drama versions of the spy story Iris. His TV work also includes the drama All In and most recently Mr. Sunshine. Lee’s recent Hollywood roles include Storm Shadow in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, as well as roles in Red 2, Terminator Genisys, and The Magnificent Seven
rubie
December 18, 2019 Korean film distributors beef up 2020 pipeline to dethrone Disney Source: PULSE News South Korean film distributors have bolstered their movie pipeline next year after losing their home turf to Walt Disney Company who swept box offices with Frozen 2. Walt Disney Company Korea was the leading film distributor in the country with a market share of 26.9 percent through November, ahead of No. 2 CJ ENM by 3.6 percentage points, according to Korean Film Council on Tuesday. This is the first time for a foreign distribution house to claim the top spot in Korea since the council started releasing market share data in 2008. CJ ENM, which lost out to Disney despite distributing major hits like Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” and action comedy film “Extreme Job,” will be joining hands with director Yoon Je-kyoon to make a film adaptation of the popular Korean musical “Hero.” Yoon was behind some of Korea’s highest-grossing movies, with the disaster film “Haeundae” garnering 11.3 million viewers and the drama film “Ode to My Father” pulling in 14.3 million. The distributor would also back the upcoming film by Lee Yong-ju, known for his hit romance film “Architecture 101.” The new movie, tentatively titled “Seo Bok,” would be about the world’s first human clone and bring together heartthrob actors Park Bo-gum and Gong Yoo. Spoiler “The Man Standing Next” [Photo by Showbox] Local distributor Showbox has seven films lined up for 2020, filled with A-list actors. In January, it would release “The Man Standing Next,” a movie that deals with the Oct. 26, 1979 assassination of Korea’s third president Park Chung-hee. Directed by Woo Min-ho, the film would feature an ensemble cast including Lee Byung-hun, Lee Sung-min and Kwak Do-won. Lee Byung-hun is to star in another Showbox movie titled “Emergency Declaration" with Song Kang-ho, who has recently been gaining worldwide recognition for his role in “Parasite.” In 2015, Showbox stood at No. 2 with a market share of 17.1 percent. But its market presence has continued to fall, with its share shriveled to 5.7 percent in January-November this year. rubie
January 1, 2020 Korean film scene goes experimental in 2020 By Choi Ji-won The Korea Herald Encouraged by the astounding achievements of 2019, the Korean film scene is set to go more adventurous this year, bringing zombies, clones and spacecraft to the big screen. Though such subjects have sometimes been a taboo in the local film industry -- due to past failures -- it looks like the achievements of 2019 have encouraged such experimental items to take part in the major entertainment scene. In the past, Korea’s film scene had been focused heavily on periodical works, romance or comedy, and criticized for the limited diversity. However, science fiction delving into unfamiliar and futuristic topics are expected to present a fresh challenge to the local film industry. Following are a few of the must-see films set to be released this year. Concept image for “Peninsula” (NEW) Fans of zombie flicks will rejoice that director Yeon Sang-ho of “Train to Busan” will release the movie’s much-awaited sequel “Peninsula” this summer. The original -- featuring Gong Yoo and Jung Yu-mi -- was one of the most popular zombie movies here, breaking the vaulted milestone of 10 million viewers in 2016 when it was released. “Peninsula” will be set four years after the zombie outbreak of the original film, telling the story of the survivors. “Victory” is about the journey of the eponymous spacecraft. The film has garnered great anticipation after it announced its star casting of heartthrob actors Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri. The movie, created with a high production budget here of 24 billion won ($20.7 million), will be the first Korean movie to incorporate robotics motion capture technology. Korea’s first film centering on human clones will also be released this year. Park Bo-gum and Gong Yoo team up on the big screen for the first time in “Seo-bok.” In the film, Ki-heon, a former intelligence agent played by Gong, comes across mankind’s first human clone and faces off against forces trying to possess the clone. Park plays the first human clone, Seo-bok. Concept image for “Call” (NEW) Director Lee Chung-hyeon, a promising newcomer who swept the domestic short film awards last year with his 14-minute “Bargain,” makes his feature film debut with thriller “Call.” Featuring actresses Park Shin-hye and Jun Jong-seo from the Cannes-nominated “Burning” alongside veteran Kim Sung-ryoung, the film tells the story of two women living in two different time periods, connected through a mysterious phone call. Song Kang-ho, lead actor of Cannes-winning “Parasite,” is making his return to the screen with the movie “Emergency Declaration” this year. Although disaster movies may seem to be a cliche, coming back almost every year with similar plots and settings, “Emergency Declaration” maybe worth the watch just to witness the chemistry between Song and another award-scraping actor Lee Byung-hun. As the title -- an aviation term used to declare the need for emergency landing of an aircraft in abnormal situations -- implies, the film is a suspenseful disaster film unfolding inside a plane. While an August release is expected for “Peninsula,” no dates have yet been set for “Victory,” “Seo-bok,” “Call,” and “Emergency Declaration.” By Choi Ji-won (jwc@heraldcorp.com)

rubie
January 9, 2020 Even without a hit, studios are still spending big: Local blockbusters struggle to profit but expect more in 2020 Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily Clockwise from top are scenes from new films coming up in 2020: the local sci-fi blockbuster “Seobok,” musical film “Hero,” drama film “The Man Standing Next” and comedy “Secret Zoo.” [CJ ENTERTAINMENT, SHOWBOX, ACEMAKER MOVIE WORKS] The centennial of Korean cinema turned out to be a record-setting year, with 220 million movie tickets sold in 2019. While many local film distributors see the growing numbers as a sign that the industry is growing, the reality is that the business continues to struggle to make a profit at the box office. For instance, “Ashfall,” which was released in December, raised eyebrows months before its release due to its immense production cost of 26 billion won ($22.4 million). In order for the film to reach its break-even point, it needed to sell 7.3 million tickets. As of Tuesday, the film has sold 7.6 million admissions on its 20th day of release, but judging from slowing ticket sales and the upcoming release of films such as “Dolittle” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” this week, it seems the film will have trouble reaping a significant profit. Over the past few years industry experts have seen a jump in the number of local big-budget films being made. According to an annual report released by the Korean Film Council, in 2018, the average production cost of 40 commercial films that qualify as big-budget films (costing over 3 billion won to make) was 7.9 billion won, an increase of 7.8 percent compared to 2017. However, the estimated profit made from those 40 films was found to be a deficit of 17.3 percent, a sharp decline compared to the year before when it reached a surplus of 18 percent. This was the first deficit recorded since 2012, and experts say that the primary cause lies in the lack of popularity of big-budget movies. Nevertheless, a slew of expensive films of various genres are on the docket and already generating a buzz, as studios hope to attract audiences with star-studded casts and advanced visual effects (VFX) technology. One of the most anticipated projects of the year is the tentatively titled “Seungriho.” The film is the first local large-scale sci-fi movie and is reported to have cost 24 billion won to make. Director Jo Sung-hee, who achieved success for his 2012 romantic fantasy film “A Werewolf Boy,” and actor Song Joong-ki reunited for the film seven years after last working together. Actor Kim Tae-ri will also appear in the film playing the lead role of a spaceship captain. Actor Yoo Hae-jin plays a robot, and his character is the first robot made through motion capture technology used in a local film. The character is being animated by VFX house Dexter Studios, who also created the effects in the “Along with the Gods” series (2017/2018) and “Ashfall.” “Seobok” by director Lee Yong-ju is about a former agent from the information bureau (played by Gong Yoo) who is on the brink of death. He eventually meets the world’s first human clone named Seobok (played by Park Bo-gum) to learn the secret to eternal life. The film is said to have cost 16 billion won to make. Another highly-anticipated title is director Yeon Sang-ho’s “The Peninsula,” which will take audiences to a world four years after the zombie apocalypse that erupted in “Train to Busan” (2016). The movie stars Kang Dong-won, whose character is on a mission to fight off the powerful zombies. On a slightly different note, the film “Emergency Announcement” (tentatively titled) by director Han Jae-rim is set on an airplane on alert due to a viral epidemic happening outside. The 15-billion-won film stars the duo from “Joint Security Area” (2000) - actors Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun - playing characters working together to survive. Stories related to North Korea are still a popular theme in the local film industry. The director of “The Berlin File” (2012), Ryu Seung-wan, is returning to the big screen through “Mogadishu,” which is based on a true story of workers from North and South Korean Embassies escaping the Somalia civil war in the 1990s. A cast of veteran actors including Zo In-sung, Kim Yoon-suk and Huh Joon-ho will appear in the film, which cost 15 billion won to make. “Summit: Steel Rain” by director Yang Woo-suk places the three leaders of the United States, North and South Korea in jeopardy when they are trapped in a North Korean nuclear submarine. Actor Jung Woo-sung, who portrayed a North Korean spy agent in “Steel Rain” (2017) plays the South Korean president in this film, and Kwak Do-won plays a North Korean secondary leader who leads a military coup. The North leader is featured by Yoo Yeon-seok. Many renowned directors are also expected to make a comeback this year. Director Lee Joon-ik, who was behind the black-and-white film “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet,” is back with black-and-white film “Jasaneobo” based on a historical figure Jeong Yak-jeon (1758-1816), who is a scholar from the Joseon Dynasty (1319-1910). “Jasaneobo” is the marine biology book that the scholar researched for and wrote during his 14-year-exile. The film goes on to describe how the renowned scholar (played by actor Seol Kyung-gu) writes the book along with the help of a local peasant named Chang-dae (played by Byun Yo-han). Director Yim Soon-rye is the first female director to work on a blockbuster worth more than10 billion won with her upcoming film “Bargain” (tentatively titled). rubie
Even with the cautious mood surrounding the nCoV outbreak, hopefully the filming of EMERGENCY DECLARATION will move as planned i.e. to start filming in March. Currently, Lee Byung Hun has no public event, perhaps rehearsing for his role in the movie (presuming it's a role he hasn't portrayed before). Jeon Do Yeon on the other hand is likely busy with her new movie promos which the release was delayed from Feb 12 to Feb 19. Even though there's no public events in crowded places, there would be other means to promote.. via tv, radio, media interviews etc. And of course, man of the hour (apart from Dir. Bong Joon Ho of Parasite), Song Kang Ho has also returned to Korea from the Oscars and will start filming soon.. obviously after a lot of post-Oscar events for Parasite. All the very best to all of them, especially anticipating another great work in the Korean movie industry. February 13, 2020 After Oscars, ‘Parasite’ stars are booked and busy: Now beloved at home and abroad, the actors have a lot on their plates this year Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily (SKH related excerpt only) The cast returned to Korea on Tuesday morning, and even after a 13-hour flight, they were beaming with pride, smiling for the photographers who were there to greet them. After the whirlwind success of “Parasite,” naturally many people are wondering what’s next for the film’s stars. The most attention is on Song, a major star in Korea in his own right, who has come to be known internationally as director Bong Joon-ho’s muse for the number of films he has done with the award-winning director. “Parasite” was Song’s fourth lead role in a Bong film after “Memories of Murder” (2003), “The Host” (2006) and “Snowpiercer” (2013). When asked if he was willing to work with Bong for a fifth time at a press conference after the Academy Awards, Song sarcastically replied that he was “not so sure.” “[The characters I played] were so tiring. I had to live in an underground apartment and had to get soaked in the rain. Maybe if the next character is like the CEO [that Lee Sun-kyun played], I’ll think about it,” Song said. Song’s next film is “Emergency Announcement” (translated) from director Han Jae-rim. The disaster movie is set on an airplane on high alert due to an epidemic happening outside. It’s the actor’s third collaboration with Han after “The Show Must Go On” (2007) and “The Face Reader” (2013). Anticipation for the film is high as it stars Song and actor Lee Byung-hun in the lead roles. This seems like an audition notice held in January for the supporting cast of EMERGENCY DECLARATION. Helena
http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20200401000816 Filming suspended indefinitely as COVID-19 spreads By Choi Ji-won | Apr 1, 2020 Actors Lee Byung-hun (left) and Ha Jung-woo attend a press conference for the film “Ashfall” in Seoul on Nov. 19, 2019. Lee and Ha have been cast for upcoming films “Emergency Declaration” and “Kidnapped,” respectively. (Yonhap) The impact of the novel coronavirus on the film industry may continue into early next year, as films not only postpone imminent releases, but suspend shootings and push back entire production schedules. Filming of blockbuster aviation disaster flick “Emergency Declaration,” originally scheduled to start last month, has been postponed, according to the film’s distributor and investor Showbox. “As the film is set inside a plane, it’s a big project in itself and requires more preparations compared to other films. With the coronavirus outbreak continuing, we have decided to take things more slowly,” a Showbox official told The Korea Herald on Wednesday, adding it is undecided when the shooting would start. Helmed by director Han Je-rim of “The King” (2017) and “The Face Reader” (2013) and featuring a star-studded cast of Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yon and Kim Nam-gil, the film was a highly anticipated action-disaster flick. Films with overseas sets have been hit hard by the COVID-19 spread, as travel has become restricted. Last week, the crew and cast of “Bogota,” including lead actor Song Joong-ki, returned from Colombia as filming was suspended. The crime flick about a Korean man who moves to the South American country was expected to be shot mostly in Colombia. “The entire ‘Bogota’ team is returning as of now. Their safety is of the utmost priority and we will decide on how to proceed with the shootings while monitoring the situation,” the film’s distributor Megabox Plus M said last week. “Kidnapped,” starring Ha Jung-woo and Ju Ji-hoon, also put an early hold on the film's production in Morocco. Filming was scheduled to have started in March, but no new schedule has been decided on for now, the film’s distributor Showbox said. Producers of the blockbuster “Negotiations,” featuring Hyun Bin and Hwang Jung-min, have tentatively called off filming in Jordan, proceeding with scenes in Korea first. Actors Hwang Jung-min (left) and Hyun Bin are expected to star in an upcoming film "Negotiation." (Yonhap) Yet even films being shot in Korea are finding it difficult to continue. A studio complex operated by the Korea Creative Content Agency in Daejeon -- Studio Cube -- reports seeing cancellations since the outbreak of the virus early this year. “The six studios in the complex were reserved for nearly 1,600 days (total between them) last year, but we’re expecting less than 1,000 days for this year. Even that might be difficult,” an official from Studio Cube told The Korea Herald. “Although we’re supported by the government, regarding the operations of the studios, the impact (from COVID-19) is huge even for us, and probably even worse for private studios,” the official said. According to the official, two of the four big productions that had planned to use the studio this year had canceled reservations. As the public is told to stay away from mass gatherings, locations often used for film shoots -- schools, hospitals and government properties -- are increasingly refusing to allow filming on site as it typically involves around 100 people gathering. Meanwhile, Korean cinemas are seeing the lowest audience numbers in decades. According to Korea Film Council data, around 1.83 million people visited the cinema last month. This is the lowest figure in KOFIC’s data since 2004, and nearly one-eighth of the number of people who went to the movies in the same period last year.
