IC's author talks about Itaewon Class and Park Seo Jun

https://entertain.naver.com/read?oid=109&aid=0004155941

I didn't translate the first 3 paragraphs bcs it's basically just something like an introduction about the webtoon and drama.

Director Kim Sungyoon said, "When i first encountered the original work, i felt that it would be attractive for drama with its strong characters, distinct conflict and rapid story development." It was none other than director Kim Seongyoon who proposed to author Cho KwangJin.

When asked why he had written the script himself, Cho Kwangjin said, "The director contacted me and came to me. As the original author, i wanted to be a professional drama writer with the hope that the drama would work well, so i decided that i was going to do it." However when he and the director talked about the original, he began to change his mind. "Itaewon Class" is a character-oriented narrative, and i was a person with a strong understanding of the characters than anyone else as the original author. I also felt the lack of the original work, and i thought it was an opportunity to make up for it with drama."

For author Cho Kwangjin, however, writing the drama was a challenge. It was a living job for a cartoonist who closed on a weekly basis, including writing, directing and painting. There were parts that i easily saw as being ignorant and brave (not sure on this part..) " he said. "But, whether it's a cartoon or a drama, it's a form of a play that makes a story, and there's a connection. I'm doing my best to make good works while listening to the opinions of directors, actors and staff." he said.

Webtoon "Itaewon Class" has been receiving more requests to be adapted to drama than any other work in the midst of its popularity. As Cho Kwangjin directly took charge of the screenplay and script, there are also growing questions about the differences between the original and the drama. However, what the author emphasized above all else was "complementary." "I'm very concerned about complementing the narrative and the three-dimensionalization of the characters," said author Cho Kwangjin. "and although i have another narrative that is different from the original, but i focused more on complementing rather than "discrimination" from the original. There were many stories that were not solved in original. "For those of you who watched the webtoon, i think it would be fun to see the deeper and richer characters and the chemistry between them."

How about watching the original characters drawn from your fingertips emerged in the colors and charms of each actor? Cho Kwangjin said, "Before i wrote the drama, i only saw 'images'. Since i took charge of writing, I have seen feelings as an ambiguous expression. I am honored and grateful for all the actors i am with now." In particular, as for Park Seojun, who plays the role of the protagonist Park Saeroy, "Park Seojun has given some 'weight' to Park Saeroy. It is not an overwhelming weight, but a tenderness, a sense of affection, and an unconscious sincerity." he said.

Finally, Cho Kwangjin points out "character" as the best viewing point, saying, "The combination of characters with positive values will slowly accumulate more and more over the time, and the cool decisions and firm steps of those that can't bee seen in the reality portray the fantasy the times desire. "Someone will feel catharsis, or hope in life," he said, adding to his expectations.

Sorry if there are a lot of mistakes in my translation. Besides I was struggling with my very limited korean, i was struggling in expressing it in english too  So, feel free to correct me :D

@Anjalifairy you’re the best :love:

I don’t know what kind of vibe Park Saeroy gave in original work, but what writer described about PSJ’s portrayal of the character seems like a right approach. Park Saeroy is a guy who collected all that people under his “wing”. He should be someone who is sincere, in some ways tender and maybe even emotionally affectionate to win over them and make them appreciate him as their friend and boss)))

Also, based on some comments under Youtube and Naver that voice in epic song in Park Saeroy’s individual teaser belongs to a singer Ha Hyun Woo and probably his band Guckkasten.

I just love how extra she is :joy:

I also love the way Jo Yiseo is challenging Oh Sooah :smirk:

Watch: Park Seo Joon Shows The Strength And Will Of His Character In “Itaewon Class” Teaser

Spoiler

JTBC’s upcoming drama “Itaewon Class” has revealed a new trailer for Park Seo Joon!

“Itaewon Class” is based on a webtoon of the same name and tells the story of young people brought together by their stubbornness and passion as they chase after their dreams in Itaewon.

In the new teaser, we see Park Sae Roy (played by Park Seo Joon) walking in the rain. He says to someone, “The only thing you can do is to kneel and receive your due punishment. I’m going to make it happen.”

Park Sae Roy continues, “I want to live a life where you don’t have to suffer consequences for your beliefs. If it’s for that [kind of life], I’ll do anything.”

Park Sae Roy shows his strong conviction as he shuts an officer’s laptop in the police station. In the next scene, he says, “Just once, one last time, and then one more time, again! Those ‘one last times’ are what change a person.”

He stands face to face against chairman Jang Dae Hee (played by Yoo Jae Myung) and declares war. “‘Give up and do just enough’? That’s too much to ask. What do you think someone would be able to accomplish after deciding first that it’s not going to work? You need to try and then decide.”

He says, “I’ll show you what being stubborn really is.”

The next scene shows Park Sae Roy in prison, where he says, “My life is just starting, and I’m going to live while achieving everything I want. I’m going to become stronger.”

“Itaewon Class” premieres January 31. Watch the trailer below:

Webtoon Author Of “Itaewon Class” Shares Points To Look Out For In Upcoming Drama

Spoiler

JTBC’s upcoming Friday-Saturday drama “Itaewon Class” has shared points to look out for in the drama ahead of its premiere!

“Itaewon Class” is based on a webtoon of the same name and tells the story of young people brought together by their stubbornness and passion as they chase after their dreams in Itaewon.

In addition to the stellar cast led by Park Seo Joon, Kwon Da Mi, Kwon Nara, Yoo Jae Myung, and more, the drama will be produced by director Kim Sung Yoon, who produced “Love in the Moonlight” and “Discovery of Love,” and written by Jo Kwang Jin, who is the original author of the popular webtoon the drama is based on.

Director Kim Sung Yoon, who had asked author Jo Kwang Jin to produce the script, shared, “When encountering the original webtoon, I felt as if it was like a drama with its strongly unique individuals, clear conflict, and fast-paced story with a charming development that made me suspect that [the author] wrote the story with a drama adaptation in mind from the beginning.”

On writing the script for the drama, author Jo Kwang Jin shared, “The director contacted me and came to see me. As the original author, I refused at first with the hopes that the drama would do well while wanting a professional script writer to take on the project.” However, he revealed that his mind began to change while talking to the director about the original piece. He shared, “‘Itaewon Class’ is a story with the characters at the focal point, and I was the person who understood the characters best as the original author. Furthermore, I felt that parts were lacking in the original and that it was an opportunity to remedy it on my own through the drama.”

However, the author talked about the differences between producing a webtoon and writing a script. He said, “As a webtoon author, my job was to put [the webtoon] together with words and pictures, and finish it by the week. You can be brave if you’re ignorant, and there was a part me that thought it would be easy to [produce the script] as I only had to write. However, there are similarities with the form of making the stories within a webtoon and drama. After listening carefully to the opinions of the director, actors, and staff, I’m making adjustments to do my best to create a good project.”

As for differences between the webtoon and drama, the script writer focused on being able to supplement the original rather than changing it through the drama while putting emphasis on making the characters come to life. He added, “There are many stories I couldn’t tell in the original. For the people who have seen the webtoon, I think there will be fun in watching the deeper and more fleshed out inner thoughts of the characters as well as their chemistry with each other.”

Script writer Jo Kwang Jin picked the characters as the main point to look out for in the upcoming drama, sharing that he hopes people will feel catharsis and receive hope as they watch the characters make refreshing decisions and take decisive steps.

“Itaewon Class” premieres on January 31 at 10:50 p.m. KST. Watch a teaser for the drama here!
