[Drama 2020-2021] Hospital Playlist, 슬기로운 의사생활 - Season 1 & 2

Haha! Good morning from my country — I cannot forget the emotions that YYS portrayed during the kissing scene! But hate some downplayed reasons of staying:

1.  He considered the thoughts of his patients that he indeed is needed to save more lives.

2. His discipline, perseverance and passion will be set aside;

3. He considered his mom’s request to stay

Bonus — someone sees him as a man who can stay besides her and not because he is budda character etc.  With this he can fulfill his mom’s desire to get married because she has sent off 4 children to serve already.

Season 2 will surely show us more problems, more issues of life! This show gave a rollercoaster ride but worth to take that ride - too much laughter, too much crying, but also allowed us to process our priorities and reflection!

my side note: YYS never fails to deliver an a good emotional kiss! Omaya! He totally cannot be a priest with that skills to kiss hahahahahaaa

No its licensed and official. The streaming sites which rips legal subs are taking it from Netflix. All the streaming sites are ripping subs from the 3 official licensed subbing sites.

Usually before Netflix, I will refer to mandarin fansubs 1st even though it is non-official license :sweatingbullets:

Mandarin subs are quite accurate and they do subs minor details.

Biggest LOL moment - he joined his own hospital so late? 3 yrs back? Gyeol was at hospital before he joined.. what was he doing..and where..

Poor Rosa... her kids are weird...all of them

*****************************

I still don't know how to interpret IJ-Shwa.. she rejected and they went back to being friends? Isn't it..

*******************

Very abrupt.. why did he decide to not become a priest , all of a sudden?

Think he chose not to work in the hospital own by his father.

Think there is no rejection, some chinese netizens had gave some hope by pointing the similar colour tone they wear for the band performance.

Think he decide not to be because maybe he also notice Winter at first sight when he visits the GS office.

@romancetrash I have to run off. I switched off the subs and listened to the Jeon Mido song during the Ikjun scene. And also the Ahn Chi Dong scene. To get my answers. If my friend translates it later... will post here. Unfortunately its a working day so can't deal on it.

@ryanallright right right right. I forgot about Baidu. Back in the days when subs took longer and we had less subbers I used to compare Chinese subs. There was a site that had Mandarin subs script that I could get an audio of. I don't read Chinese. But hes Baidu subbers are usually very good. They would be way better than Netflix in my opinion.

I intend to go to the doctor couple channel later to listen to the review. If anyone has any more links of Korean medical doctors reviewing the episodes I wouldn't mind watching it now. The Professor talking about HP was kinda interesting to listen to.  It brings memories flooding back of what it was like when I was young and dumb and innocent.

I actually went back to some of the patient scenes. The late trimester misccariage really struck a chord in me. So many times we are rushed for time and compassion. SH really took the time to grieve with her and allowed her to grieve. I felt for the lady outside who understood what happened. It is miracle when a baby is safely delivered. And I never know what to say each and every time someone tells me they are passing clots and there is no fetal movement. Or the ultrasound shows no fetal heartbeat. Damn show. Leave it to the last episode hey? One of the most hated part of work. And then Jeong Won and his sick kids and organ donations. Both are 2 parts I hate to deal with. I might have taken time myself to grieve with that scene. All those pregnant ladies.

Like I said... I am going back to rewatch the series. And I did rewatch episode 12 scenes raw and got a lot more out of it.

Most importantly, mandarin fansubs are usually LITERAL translations from Korean, and Korean language being very similar linguistically with mandarin, it helps me as a viewer to understand better.

Watched so much mandarin subs over the years that I do not take netflix english translations literally for korean dramas anymore.

Yees, there are few posts in twitter that capture of Na PD left comment in Official HP Instagram acc and even made Insta story for HP. I think he also enjoy watching HP and want to support Shin PD. Many fans ask Na PD to cast 99 squad on Three meals a day and Youth Over FLower. It will be amazing and blessing if it comes true!! Still remember how clever YYS during his Vietnam trip and how innocent JJS during his Iceland trip.

Spoiler

BTW, I just rewatch Ep 12 for I don't know how many times. I need to satisfy myself so I can be productive on work today (my excusee!). And while re-watching this scene, I am sure this is addlib from JJS (remember on Minha Relay Cam?!) :D:

I noticed that Netflix kills the nuances of the Korean language. Patting myself on the back for watching kdramas 10 years with a 1yr break. Where do you go for Mandarin fansubs? Maybe I can brush up my Mandarin skills and understand the story in a deeper level.

TSKSCN fansubs, Hanmi 韩迷 fansubs.

I usually google for their torrents or watch it off any of those china video sites that has these vids.

But who cried when Yoon Bok realized SongHwa was the doctor who was with her mom?

I was a mess... I thought they had left it because their discovery was that she is in the same church as them. But this point got revisited in last night’s episode and confirmed our speculation.

Me too me too... hahaaa

As I rewatched, the family of JWon patient is really special to see. The visitors grew from only the parents (2), to with grandparents (4), with uncle (5), aunt (6) and for their last visit, there were the 8 of them. What a blessed little girl :)

While I can understand why some people feel Jungwon's decision is abrupt, I disagree that its very abrupt.

Its been told by little and subtle things such as:

1. His own brother who is a priest kept asking him to stay in the hospital. And if Jungwon had been that passionate in church, he would've studied instead of delaying and stayed in medicine.

What was the trigger then? don't think this is about romance..

This doesn't really answer anything.. him being fit or what his true passion is, i think all of us know that..

But, if a 40 yr old who is very careful about his decision, starts to think of alternate profession and pursue it so strongly.. and suddenly gives up = UNEXPLAINED, ABRUPT

Quote

4. Gyeoul indeed has bee  shaking his determination to become a priest however little it is. His feelings toward her is conflicted, but not because hes not sure that he likes her. Hes not sure that he could like her when he believed he wanted to become a priest.

Are you saying he wanted to be a priest since the moment he joined here?

GY has no or little play in this one.. i just don't see head or toe of this whole arc in romance

Let's enjoy now first before worrying about future. I think it's okay to be present, live in the moment and enjoy it while it lasts.

Things will come, including hardships, tests and trials - he will get through it, both of them will as will us.

So far there hasn't been much headache since he has more successful cases and he is more certain about his next steps.

I think he is having migraines

The sign is that he holding right side of his head and he's taking medication. Often when he is stress, and thinking too much, he showed that headache. I dont really think author use that approach. Plus in 1988, Junghwan died?? I dont remember that happen??

Ah at last, it's been a lovely few weeks reading all your posts and predictions and just feelings in general, what am I gonna do until next year?!?! From my viewing experience, I did get caught up in the romance aspect of the series (didn't we all? :phew:) but Episode 12 pulled me back and reminded me that at the end of the day, it's a story of doctors and patients, their triumphs and struggles and the little bits of their life in between. I don't watch a lot of medical dramas but the ones I familiarized myself with don't put much emphasis on the patient's POV which made me appreciate this series so much more  :tears:

Most if not all of the patient's stories had me ugly crying at 1am! The liver patient from PP? The wailing mother????? The mother who brought the patient's baby clothes AHH And I initially thought the twins knew of Songhwa since it was highlighted in Episode 1 only and never mentioned again, so when Songhwa started talking about the twins' mom, boy did the waterworks set in. Jeon Mi Do DID SUCH A GOOD JOB IN THAT SCENE ESPECIALLY the expression she had when 'I miss my mom so much' finally registered. FEELS you know.

As for the rest of the episode, not much is left to be said that you wonderful posters haven't said already. Therefore I'd just like to add on to certain points or scenes that stuck out to me.

Wintergarden fans???????? Are yall still there, did the last 10 mins leave you unscathed?? I know I'm permanently scarred. As they started singing during the last band practice it dawned on me the episode was ending and I was just - ah okay, I'll make do with the last scene of Gyeoul looking vacantly at Jeongwon, those will be the crumbs I hold on to while waiting for the next season and the idea of a plot twist of another pairing was slowly coming into fruition :tears:

But boy did they prove me wrong, all I wanted was dinner outside in their regular clothes with no scrubs, but apparently the production team felt like doing more?!!? YES   And who would've thought the Jeongwon running scene was linked during the ER scene?!?!??!?!?!?! Him waiting in front of the ER anxiously, getting flustered when the Nurse asked if he wanted to tag along when checking her?!?! Oooof.

The ER scene came early on in the season right? Way before the dinner scene and most importantly, before he got his letter to the seminary right? So I think that's something to ponder on, affirming that he in fact does have some feelings for Gyeoul (I love them but honestly thought it was just one sided on Gyeoul's side until the second part of the season so IMAGINE MY SHOCK) and justified why Ikjun continued to support Gyeoul's crush lmao. If Jeongwon was consistently cold and bothered by Gyeoul, Ikjun would've nipped it in the bud earlier on in the season because despite Jeongwon being one of his best friends, he does think highly of his mentee and wouldn't put her through unrequited love, you know??? Also another lovely addition, Songhwa teasing Jeongwon with Winter is coming, Winter is here. What did she have to be so cute for? :tears:

If you looked at one of my posts last week, I talked about how Jeongwon needed to go to Italy to fulfill his longtime dream and yeah we saw him struggling a bit, but I think the girl who ran over a speed bump was the final obstacle he had to go through to affirm that he would in fact stay especially watching his scenes with the family? Some said he stayed for love (which I can't discredit because it did play a part!) but that was imo indirectly? Gyeoul pleaded him to stay after he decided to not pursue priesthood (so idk fam blaming her for that seems a bit far-fetched, yes people are blaming her for preventing him to go on other social media platforms )

For Iksun and Junwan's part, I hope someone screenshots this (or I will later), but if you look at the returned package, there's that sticker of the reasons for the return package, and for the rings it was ticked as unknown when another choice, address unknown, was also included in one of the reasons but WASN'T ticked. Which made me think that Iksun really did return it but I'm baffled on why she would say she want to wear it though initially? And from a career perspective, her suddenly deciding to return to Korea doesn't really sit well with me because she worked so hard for it? And it's such a prestigious honour (like only one person from the base camp was eligible to go?) Ugh.

Finally my GomxGom couple. I totally get Seokhyeong was coming from but it still hurts!!!!!!!!! We were robbed of Minha's wish for a Christmas Kiss but I am not giving up on them!!!!!! Hate how the plot twist of the season was for them to end up becoming the next slow burn couple tsk tsk (with a possible triangle too???). Lastly, did anyone else find it fishy that his ex-wife (who he still might have feelings for I kinda vibe with some of the posters' thoughts on this) came into contact with him AFTER his dad died, knowing that he doesn't have any siblings hence everything would be inherited to him?????

Anyways, this story is one of my favorite series' this year and reading everyone's thoughts and perspectives on this has been super fun and interesting!

Til next year everyone! :D

To quote Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, "I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look or the words, which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."

Maybe it is not a single trigger, but small cumulative realizations?

well if you can not see the romantic arc of Winter Garden, perhaps you're interested to re-watch it again??? From episode 2 I suggest. I have a winter garden's compilation scene if you're interested :)

edit: So I'm really curious about the pediatric surgeon in South Korea, and I found an abstract about it from a 2015 journal. They wrote, "Total number of PICU beds in Korea was 113. The ratio of the number of PICU beds to the number of children was 1:77,460 in Korea and this ratio is lower than that of other developed countries." The conclusion is,

"There is a considerable shortage of PICU beds compared to those in developed countries. In addition, the proportion of PICUs with PCC (Pediatric Critical Care) specialists is much lower than those in the US and European countries."

so they aint kidding about it in episode 11 huh.

Interesting that pediatric department is kinda underdeveloped in South Korea, when their birth rates has already been low for a few years.

A Japanese drama that is adapted from Korean drama, Good Doctor, also has a similar problem.

Spoiler

In Good Doctor, the board wants to close the pediatric ward and replace it with elderly (?) ward. The reason is because the elder ward will bring more economical profit to the hospital.

1.22.30 (around that timestamp)

After he leaves post confessing, she sighs.. i didn't realize this in 1st watch.. but you hear a distinct sighing voice inspite of background ost

Why sigh :O

And isn't IJ the reason she moved to Sokcho in the 1st place.. ACH is not the reason!..t his decision comes abruptly after IJ's confession on dinner table..

and when she broke the news of moving to Sokcho.. IJ realizes he has a role to play in that decision.. the way he is not even looking at her while others bombard her with questions

Well we havent seen his own understanding and POV on GyeoUl. We did see he is slowly leaning to Winter and the signs were like the eyes, the torn expression and Ikjun who knew him for 20 years. Other than that, he might talk with Shwa often abt his feeling

Abrupt?

We saw the transition of months

1st Rosa plead in Early November

2nd New patient in late Novembet

3rd his interaction with Gyeo Ul over the OR

4th his discussiom with SongHwa. Seems like SHwa knows more than IkJun. And we didnt see the behind the scene of their discussion. And we didnt know when did SHwa know about Winter

5th His Mother Rosa. He is slowly warms up to the idea of not abandoning his lonely mother

6th We are still oblivious when did he developed that feeling!!

7th the reminder of unique status Yulje Pediatric Ward
