Popular Post bedifferent
I am going to miss this show a lot. Was not able to actively post here due to crazy work, I will always remember how our world was changed while I watched this medical drama. I love HL for how much I was able to relate to every character we see on the show. This duo PD-writer will always have a fan in me. Everyone, the cast, the production.. you should be proud of what you have done. This drama gave me something to look forward to every week. I learned to care for every cast member, although I miss seeing Dr. Bong lately! Just a few things before the finale is here. It's fitting that the one person who found it hard to have confidence in Gyeo-Wool in the beginning was the first to believe in her abilities to assist her first case. They work great as a team. Gyeo-Wool's calm demeanor and methodical approach in removing the maggots is the same way she operates in the OR. Jeong-won noticed her mental toughness as well. Bless Jeong Won, may he realize he can make room in his heart for another person besides God. He just have to accept that love is a miracle, how rare it is to find another person to compliment you. He who lives by his heart meets she who understands things based on logics. That said, I support his decision to find if priesthood is his destiny. I expect season 2 to answer that question for us. Meanwhile, give Gyeo-Wool time to become South Korea's next great pediatric surgeon. Ik-jun learned to live for himself again, just as he supports his latest patient's wife to stand up and be a little selfish for her own life. It's clear that she needs to stop sacrificing hers for others, even if it was for her hsb and under expectations of inlaws. I really like how the story progresses to Ik-jun's public admission of his love for Song-Hwa. Ik-jun is a gambling man who resigned to winning only solitaire online. Like Ik-sun, I want him to remember that he doesn't have to orbit around Uju's world all the the time. Good that he excels at solitaire cuz Song-Hwa is one who treasures her solitary life atm. Song-Hwa's decision to leave was most gracious like the person that she is. I applaud her maturity, her grace, her selflessness. I want to know more about her mom. How proud she must be to have such a daughter. Seok-hyung's been broken all this time from his dad's infidelity. He has lost faith in love until a ball of a fire resident came rolling into his life. We know Gyeo-Wool receives a lot of fan love, Min-Ha is the kind of friend I would be lucky to meet. I love how real she is, especially of her hard work and conscientious mindset. She is a winner. Joon-wan must now walk the talk that he gave in the earlier episode for being a modern progressive man. He must find a way to balance his love for Ik-sun and his support for her happiness. I really like how he became more and more humble because of her. There's a humanity in him now that was missing in the first episode. He even connects with his resident Jae-hak. I have been wondering for long about Jae-hak's place in our show. If it was to show that heart can make a physician despite the rough clumsy personality, I am sold. I root for him because there are many residents out there who try twice as hard, beyond their limit without complaint. Those who are not born smart or blessed with winning personality. Chi-Hong will find that discipline in him to complete his residency despite fallbacks. I do want him to realize that his career has to be out of love and is his choice not by circumstances. Cheers to all our nurses, esp nurse Song (Ik-jun's) for their patience, compassion and support of all our physicians and patients. The hospital is their second family, one that many dedicate decades to care for. Will try to back read the posts. Thank you for all the comments, postings, translations, links, updates. It has been a great thread to join. Hi to @40somethingahjumma @kokodus @triplem. Hope you enjoyed the drama. @taeunfighting,is it what you expected? Did you see your family in these guys? See everyone after episode 12. 14 18 1

KDramaFan0828
Because it's D-Day, I decided to re-watch some of the memorable scenes from past episodes. I remember a youtuber analyzing the significance of the mafia game scene and associated it with who gave the flowers to SHwa, so I decided to rewatch it to understand it myself but I got a different impression (linking the video below for your reference). While rewatching, I realized that the mafia game may have foreshadowed IJ and SHwa’s story. The Night and Day in the mafia game could’ve been metaphors to the Past and Present. Only those who know what happened in the night (past) know who the “Mafia” is. Jeongwon was the game master --- the only one who knows who the “Mafia" is aside from the actual “Mafia”. And we know how with his sensitivity, Jwon can easily know things about his friends. The rest are the other players: Rosa - SHwa Jongsu - IJ Young-Hye (Seokhyeong’s Mom) - SH Jeon (Yulje Director) - Jwan Jongsu and Rosa being parallels for IJ and SHwa are pretty self-explanatory as we’ve covered that numerous times. Director Jeon was the mirror for Jwan, being his professor who inspired him to take Cardiothoracic Surgery and pushed him to hold a higher position at Yulje. He is also the only one who has a stable living partner just as how Jwan is the only one in a relationship. As for SH, he called his mom asking about her day after the Mafia game. I believe their conversation echoes how precious the lacking 5 is to SH. Despite being “anti-social”, he seeks comfort from his friends. SH: Wasn’t it uncomfortable with strangers around? SH’s mom: I want to hang out with them next weekend too. I haven’t laughed this much since I got old. I’ve never met people who are as entertaining as they are my whole life. In the second round of the game, Jongsu was chosen as the “Mafia”. When everyone was discussing, Jongsu kept on insisting that he was the “Mafia”. When the voting came around, he suddenly voted against Rosa, contradicting what he was claiming all along and ultimately denying he’s the “Mafia”. But to Rosa’s dismay, it was finally revealed that Jongsu was actually the “Mafia”. Rosa: Even of you had to betray someone, how could you betray your best friend of 65 years? How could you? Jongsu: I was just trying to play the game the best that I could. Then Rosa proceeds to wipe the coffee off Jongsu’s face like how SHwa washed IJ’s face. What’s interesting though is that during the first round, Rosa was the “Mafia” and she immediately admitted it. SH’s mom confirmed it saying she felt something move past her. Working on this take, it may be possible that IJ may have affirmed his feelings towards SHwa in the past but took it back, hurting SHwa in the process. And Jwon might have known the full story all along, SH might have had an idea about SHwa’s feelings, and Jwan was totally unaware. And now we have SHwa knowing that IJ did like her back then, just like how Rosa found out the Jongsu was really the “Mafia”. If these parallelisms are true, then I guess SHwa’s overarching emotions upon finding out about this would be the feeling of betrayal. 5 3

Popular Post 40somethingahjumma
One of my favourite aspects of this drama is its use of parallels and antithesis. This seems to be a pet topic of mine (I know) but really it's the writer's genius that I'm highlighting. Parallels and antitheses occur within single episodes but also one episode following another. For instance, In episode 11 we saw two parallel scenes where we have two eye-witness statements about how Jeong-won feels about Gyeo-ul. One from a work context (scrub nurse) and the other from a family connection (Mama Rosa). This is a rather suggestive in that Jeong-won's dynamic with Gyeo-ul's serves a dual purpose in the overall narrative. They are in the process of becoming (or foreshadowing) a longer-term professional as well as a familial partnership. Both women testify that Jeong-won singles out Gyeo-ul for special attention. That in one way or another she is special to him. Furthermore this particular in-episode parallel highlights how far the two of them have come since he confronted her in the ER for her inability to communicate empathetically in Episode 2. According to these two eyewitnesses, spatially she now has crossed over into his work zone and into his heart making that particular link between the two much more visceral. There is no public and private separation in their case. No compartmentalization between work vs love. (Note here also the contrast to Jun-wan and Ik-sun) Spoiler The next parallel in reference to Jeong-won and Gyeo-ul that interests me comes from Episodes 3 and 10. (I apologize if this has been discussed previously) This antithetical parallel demonstrates a couple of fascinating features but certainly the growth of Gyeo-ul and the gradual advancement of their dynamic. These two scenes are instructive because the main players are all present. In episode 3, we note that as the only GS resident, Gyeo-ul has her pick of surgeries. As she is deliberating JW walks into the room which influences her decision to assist Ik-jun. We find out later that her decision to assist him in multiple surgeries is based on his relationship with JW, someone she's surprisingly developed a liking for. At this point in time she relies on Ik-jun as an intermediary to provide photographs and private information of the man she admires. On this occasion JW shows up because of a text message IJ sends him and he watches on the sidelines. IJ like the player who knows he is about to win this round because he has the trump card, hides his excitement under a calm demeanour. He scores, she scores but the man of the hour is really JW. This is why IJ hugs him. He knows he owes JW hugely. His friend is the reason for his win. The selection process has already been rigged to begin with and it's a sham on some level. More importantly it is in this the work environment that the fledgling loveline begins to play out. What is also really interesting is that one of the surgeons tries to openly sway the decision making process in his favour by selling his particular procedure is a rare one. Of course he is greeted with widespread protest in the room for trying to influence GU... when ironically she's affected by JW's entry into the room. Spoiler In episode 10 we have a parallel in the form of the fake boyfriend proposal. Everyone's gathered together again for Gyeo-ul to exercise her privilege as the only GS resident to pick one. The context here is that everyone is congratulating GU for being proposed to. Of course this is also a sham on IJ's part to achieve two purposes: to get a reaction out of JW and so he can get her to pick his surgery. However the entire thing backfires on IJ when JW walks in. Again he positions himself in the fringes of this gathering. Seeing JW, a very embarrassed and awkward GU doesn't pick IJ's surgery but JW's instead. Her reasoning being she needs more experience with that particular procedure. The same reason that was offered by one of the surgeons in Episode 3. Once again, JW is the man of the hour. But openly so. No more covert dealings in the background. This is what I think is happening here. One GU is now in effect saying to IJ that she really doesn't need his help anymore to get closer to JW or to get to know him better. She is more confident in herself. She isn't shy anymore about dealing directly with JW. There's no more need for any more charades or schemes. She's not trading anymore and now she's making transactions on her own. Spoiler This is significant first because it shows how far she's come from Episode 3 but it also proves unequivocally that she's not in love with IJ or vice versa. They had a mutually beneficial relationship. It was almost... you might say... a business arrangement. Here she says that she is choosing JW and she wants to learn from him first and foremost. I don't doubt she also wants to get closer to him for other reasons but she is taking the longer... maybe harder road of opening up herself to him directly rather than going through an intermediary. Which obviously hasn't worked at all. A while back someone mentioned that they wanted to see Gyeo-ul develop as an individual and a physician without reference to being Jeong-won's "love interest". In a real enough way this is not entirely possible because her development as a doctor and human being is intimately tied to her relationship with him in this show. It's the way the writing operates here. The question that motivates the writer seems to be: How does one write an onscreen romance between two incredibly busy people who are facing life and death issues on a daily basis? It is not as easy as it appears also because Jeong-won in particular has his other spheres with the Flawed Five as well as his mother. How do you bring in an outsider? How do you intersect the personal with the professional with the sparest of spare moments? All these questions must be addressed. This is in part why the OR and the subsequent garden scenes in Episode 11 were so significant because it is culmination of the personal and the professional coalescing and intertwining. It's a loveline that's built on collaboration, complementarity and coordination. @bedifferent The drama has been a blast. Absolute blast! 14 14 2

I think their reactions and the pattern how they also looked at each other at that scene makes sense based on my interpretation of the mafia scene. I don’t think they actually got to be a couple. At most probably in the unsure stage where IJ gives special attention to SHwa enough to make her feel that he might have an interest in her? But not enough to really confirm it that’s why he still needed to confess. But we know that didn’t work out. I actually don’t know as well HAHA. I get so excited trying to decode things like a mystery I have to remind myself that the past would only matter if they haven’t moved on. So in the end what really matters is what would happen now and SHwa’s choice in the present Only a few more hours to go!!! SHwa and IJ must have had this special unspoken thing going on which only they both knew. When IJ was about to confirm it with words and seal it with a ring, his poor luck, SH confessed to her. After that IJ cancelled their supposed date and must've suddenly acted cold to her, SHwa must have felt pretty hurt and confused. Only this explains why she was kinda mad in the taxi. Because after your 20 years long friend confessed to you like that, you don't get mad, you must feel shock or pity that you don't reciprocate his feelings and you must find ways to still maintain the friendship without making it awkward. She can't be like "ok IJ confessed to me in front of my colleagues, this is embarrasing, let me cut him off from my life" That makes no sense. She might be partly mad that it happened in front of her staff, but it still doesn't make sense to not even have a talk with him and smooth things over the next day. She is just running away to sokcho. Look at how she was when SH confessed in the past. For further reference you guys can watch Yoon Jae's epic confession in R97. Shi won was not at the same place as her so she asks him whether they can go back to being friends. Spoiler I don't think we will get any resolution for Songhwa-Ikjun in this last ep. We have to wait till the next season. But it would be nice if they reveal some flashback and confirm that Songhwa also liked him back in the past. 9 4

taeunfighting
@bedifferent *waves* Good to see you! Loved reading your post. Yes, the show has been a real treat every Thursday. I like how it carries out the doctor/patient stories. Some happened to be relatable so I sincerely appreciate the writer/PD’s ability to do that. I’m super impressed that you remember my comment about my family. Spoiler My two older brothers are in the field. Jun Wan reminds me of my eldest. A bit cold on the outside, but really…he’s a nice guy and means well. Based on the trailer, I had thought Seok Hyeong would remind me of my middle brother because of his tight relationship with his mother, but actually, Jeong Won would be more accurate. My middle brother loves his profession, but like Jeong Won, he’s sensitive and emotional so he takes many things to heart. My sister-in-law was able to balance him out though so my mother was relieved of her support call duties. I keep thinking throughout the show though…life would be so much fun if Ik Jun was one of my brothers. LOL. Hope you and everyone here enjoys the "last" episode. Take care and stay safe!
