On episode 7 now but my Chinese is not up to par, I am missing the nuances I believe but the overall story is easy to follow. NiNi is supposed to be a phoenix fairy(?), saw a short clip of her having fire wings. But she looks more like a tiny peacock or pheasant. Does anyone have a link to someone explaining the episodes? I could only find it for the first one...

Could not wait for the English sub as NiNi is my favourite Chinese actress and I was psyched for this :D

Due to the unpopular of this series, so there're not a whole lof of discussion or recap about this. There’re spoilers here and there over at mydramalist.

@crispachuAsked if there’s any interests in short recap so maybe that’s start.

I'm hook on this series and really love both Chang Chen and Ni Ni so I am debating if I should do the recap.  Then again, the possibilities of me going through so much edits that I end may not even post it is very high as well.

Has the drama really been that unpopular? I thought the ML is ok. He look better in real life. The drama..perhaps the hairstyle..makes him older. But i thought it is a small matter. Acting wise..all the actors are good. I find myself enjoying this far more than 10miles peach blossom. Not too sure why. Probably because I wasnt a fan of Yang Mi but I like NiNi.

That aside, while it is obvious Ling Xi admires Jiu Chen...i was wondering when did jiu chen like her to the extend of giving up almost his life for her. I cant really pinpoint it.

Unfortunately, it's true.  The rating started at 5.5 on douban because a lot of people were giving it 1 star for 3L3W association, how the 2 leads are too old or too modern for historical drama. And then there’re those that started and just dropped it because there’re not enough actions and too much talking, sitting and standing.  I made the mistake of visiting those websites and forums.

Oh well, I like this a lot more than TMOPB.  Better acting, tighter plot and pacting, there’re no unnecessary triangle love.  The fact that both the leads always talk to each other about their thought is a win in my book.

His love for her grows gradually as the series progress. It's very subtle, mostly in his expression and some through his actions. It one of those that if you didn't pay attention, you missed it all.

It's doing better compared to Rise of Phoenixes tbh. It's not super popular per se, but it's doing lot better than hoped. It came out in middle of bunch of other popular, long awaited dramas that have strong novel fan base. Seriously, Go Go Squid, Novoland, Chang'an, the Untamed, River Flows to You, and now King's Avatar, all very popular novels, most with fantastic production and decent acting.

For douban, just a little over a week and it's at 6.4, that's close to 3L3W and Journey of Flower. It's not a bad rating all things considering. the Untamed is just about to end, and I think it opened lower than 5.5, it's sitting at 7 right now. Maybe Love and Destiny will too.

Does anyone know why no website has picked this drama up? Not even the illegal ones are showing this drama. It looks like they spent a lot a money to make it. Is it a huge failure?

You can only watch it on their official youtube channel, they didnt give permission to the usual subbing team to upload on their websites.

Jiu chen should seriously wear the hat thingy all the time, his hair style really made a dashing man like chang chen to look ugly

Alright, I'll try to group some episodes together to start...

Ep 1

Spoiler

Ling Xi is a low grade immortal whose father has kept her hidden in the Peach Tree Forest for all her 50000 years of life. She dreams of a battle between a demon and a the God of War, where the man blows away troops dressed in both black and white armor.

She manages to sneak out again to deliver medicine to the Heavenly Court. In the process, she's caught sneaking past guards, gets chased, falls into a forbidden ice cemetery of sorts called the Sea of Long Life, and awakens Jiu Chen, the God of War from a frozen state. She runs off, and while escaping, she makes off with an eternity knot and stone that Jiu Chen had in his hand.

While this is happening, another less worthy god Tian Lei Zhen Jun is trying to pass the trial of 9 lightning strikes in order to take over as God of War. The trial gets interrupted by a beast at 8 strikes, and as it flies away, happens to help her escape so that she looks like she may have demonic connections. Jiu Chen saves the day, asks for her to take care of his health in his manor, and she happily takes on that task.

Characters met:

Ling Xi - she's a sort of bird race, and her father is a drunkard retired doctor who has kept her as sequestered as possible.

Ep 2

Spoiler

Ling Xi claims she's good at doctoring as her father is a doctor, and this is when we meet ShiSan (13) who used to be known as Shishan (stone mountain), but apparently her race as a sort of fish/dragon is known for changing genders when they grow up and Jiu Chen is a little taken aback by her new look.

Ling Xi's dad Le Bo the doctor makes a fuss but ends up letting her stay. He gives her a stone pendant and tells her to wear it at all times. Shisan starts teaching her all the regulations of hanging around the heavenly realm.

Tian Lei still suspects Ling Xi so he seizes her and has her whipped for answers until he is interrupted by Jiu Chen who saves her. Jiu Chen asks for the eternity knot and tells her she must return it within 10 days or be given to Tian Lei for questioning.

Jiu Chen tells Shisan to remove the big red flower on her head and stop putting on so much make up (lol), and asks her to keep an eye on Ling Xi, so they up bunking together. She snores too much, and Ling Xi is unable to sleep. Due to this, she notices that Jiu Chen is starting to freeze again and manages to save his life before passing out.

Things we learn:

Ep 3

Spoiler

Ling Xi gets checked out by Qing Yao and is left sleeping in Jiu Chen's bed. Qing Yao also checks out Jiu Chen, and suggests getting a piece of WuJing wood (ever burning wood). Yun Feng volunteers to go get some.

Ling Xi gets spotted coming out of Jiu Chen's rooms and rumors fly that she's now his... companion and she gets all kinds of gifts.

We learn that Old Lady Yuan hates Jiu Chen and thinks he is cowardly for surviving and faults him for not coming to visit after her son and 3000 of their disciples died under his watch. Jiu Chen bumps into Yuan Tong and learns that everyone thinks he has picked up a female companion.

He goes home and yells at Ling Xi and gives her his first fake smile.

We see Yuan Tong looking at a letter from her brother and meet her fiance.

Meanwhile, Yun Feng is battling a bunch of fire birds and getting burned while trying to retrieve WuJing wood. Qing Yao comes and picks up one piece and leaves. Yun Feng gets the impression that she toyed with him by lying that he would need to pick up as much of the wood as possible.

The wood is set up, and Ling Xi is assigned to watch the fire as Shisan is not suited to the task, being of a water-based race. He tells Yun Feng he still suspects her even though he doesn't sense any demonic essence from her. He does find Le Bo's behavior suspect, as he is acting like he is afraid of something.

Jiu Chen visits the Peach Tree Forest and is able to envision her daily life. He asks about Ling Xi's mother.

In Shan Ling Jie we meet Jing Xiu, the vizier who gets a report that Yun Feng has disturbed the nest of one of his subjects and he gathers that Jiu Chen is suffering from after effect. He also hears a report that a former Heavenly military general Zhong Hao who is of Lieyi ancestry has escaped. Jing Xiu plans a trip to the Heavenly Palace and sets up a trap for him.

Ling Xi is sent to get medicine from Qing Yao in the heavenly realm and bumps into Jing Xiu being held up at the gates. Meanwhile, Yun Feng is taken with Qing Yao and goes to visit her for treatment only to witness her rough but effective medical treatments where she breaks an old immortal's legs. Yun Feng gets scared away.

On her way back out, she gives Jing Xiu some friendly advice and drops her eternity knot, which he picks up. He meets up with Tian Lei.

Things we learn:

- Shan Ling Jie is a place where heavenly subjects are exiled.

- Shan Ling nation is in charge of watching over the exiled subjects. Its monarch leaves all matters to the vizier Jing Xiu.

Ep 4.

Spoiler

Jing Xiu gifts Tian Lei with a weapon that belonged to Yuan Zheng. He gets news that he needs to go home for a pearl, Tian Lei offers to let his subordinate Kai Yang to fetch it for him. As he is escorted back out of Shan Ling Jie, he is ambushed by Zhong Hao, who thinks Jing Xiu is in the carriage, and is injured. Jiu Chen shows up and saves the day, bringing Kai Yang back to his Shen Yun Dian.

Tian Lei offers to have Zi Guang take care of the Zhong Hao problem for him in return for the gift of Yuan Zheng's weapon.

Jing Xiu visits Jiu Chen just as he is done mending Kai Yang. He is about to take his medicine when his touch freezes the cup. He sends the pearl out to Jing Xiu but doesn't meet with him. However the pearl is filled with black essence.

Jiu Chen ices up again, and Ling Xi takes good care of him and falls asleep next to him. When she wakes up, he reminds her it's day 9 and she has one more day to return the eternity knot.

Ling Xi hunts for the knot and Hua Yan comes to announce Si Ming is here to visit. Si Ming reports that the previous Shang Ling monarch slaughtered all of Jing Xiu's clan for rebellion. It is said that Jing Xiu is the one who revealed the plot and swore to aid the phoenix clan, which saved his life. After about 20k years, the former king Yuan Du died and passed the throne to his daughter Yu Yue, and Jing Xiu has served as her vizier since.

However not many wish to associate with him because of his background of betraying his own clan. Jiu Chen cautions Kai Yang about Jing Xiu as they speculate whether this incident was planned.

Jiu Chen asks about Zhong Hao. Han Zhang reports that he let him go once because of his LieYi background. There is a feud between Jing Xiu and Zhong Hao. Yun Feng arrives to report the surprising news that Tian Lei has set up a banquet for Jiu Chen, and invited all highly regarded immortals. They suspect he is up to something, but Jiu Chen accepts the challenge to attend.

Ling Xi is sent to bring medicine to Jiu Chen at the banquet. She meets Yu Li, who has a big crush on Jiu Chen. Tian Lei reveals that he has found Yuan Zheng's weapon. The weapon comes alive and Jiu Chen puts up a shield in front of the monarch and catches it as it tries to attack. His hand freezes and Ling Xi surreptitiously starts to send it chi behind his back.

Tian Lei starts questioning why the weapon is attacking Jiu Chen and asks if he killed all 100,000 troops. Old Lady Yuan also asks why he is the only survivor, and why he woke up after 50,000 years. He says that all of them died in defense against the demons, then takes Ling Xi's hand and walks out.

Things we learn:

- Immortals avoid the post at Wen Chang Palace because it's a herculean task to be in charge of mortal life. Posts such as the Toilet God and Disease God are snatched up before any immortals go for the Wen Chang post.

- The Xuan bird clan has been serving the Shan Ling monarchs as advisors/strategists for generations.

Characters we meet:

Hua Yan - another member Jiu Chen's household.

Si Ming - he is the immortal in charge of mortal life and death, marriage and fortune etc. Said to have been a mortal named Han Yuanxing who became a disciple of Immortal XianChang, cultivated for a very short few hundred years and became an immortal.

Pu Hua - an old immortal who appears to be friendly with Tian Lei

Yu Li - the daughter of the Medicine King

Thank u @crispachu those recaps explains so much background story. I have a feeling Jing Xiu (the bald head guy with tattoo all over) could probably be vying for Ling Xi's affections. He seems to have a tender spot for her in later episodes. N in the trailer..it seems he became a mortal?

Beautiful to see Jiu Chen watching over the young mortal Ling Xi like a guardian angel. It is lovely that she also have such a loving mortal Daddy too.

Yun Tong spoke harshly how lowly Ling Xi was and Jiu Chen told her straight that even if Ling Xi did not exist, she is not the one either.

Aha! I've finally caught up! I didn't think I would even start this show but now I'm hooked. I'm liking the pace so far. It's not too draggy and the storyline is engaging enough that I devoured all the available episodes in 2 days. :') As she did in The Rise of Phoenixes, Ni Ni delivers another incredible performance. This must be the first time that I have not found a cutesy/innocent character annoying within 5 minutes of suffering their on-screen presence.  I love how she isn't innocent and harmless in the standard way (I mean, she had absolutely no qualms about speaking exactly what was on her mind and offending a few people as she stumbled her way through the heavens).

The male lead certainly isn't a pretty boy, which was a bit of a shocker, because despite how refreshing it is to occasionally have a manly-looking enough man play what is meant to be a manly role, I generally assume that the common audience prefers much younger looking men to play male leads in such shows regardless of acting ability and suitability to the role. Although, I'm a bit torn between accepting his stoicism and sometimes excessively contained/reserved reactions as stiff acting or just him being in-character. Maybe it's just the occasionally stiff body movements that's giving me this impression. Regardless, he definitely has the presence of a seasoned actor and I'm enjoying his take on a generally cold and aloof character. I've seen some blank-faced actors try to pull this off and end up looking like they have no innervation to their muscles of facial expression.

Anyhow, I think I'm gonna watch this to the end, mostly because it's actually a pretty decent show and partly because some people who are adamant that looks = acting ability won't give it a chance. I definitely don't get kicks from doing things like going against unreasonable opinions or anything... No, not at all.... >_>'

Lol..everyone is commenting on the main lead. To be honest..if u google him up...he is actually pretty hot in real life. Probably the hairstyle in this drama didnt really do him justice. But i like his costume in the mortal world. Losing that outer robe makes me a tad bit younger. Lol.

I didn't know him until I started this series and I thought his looks suited his character as a God of War. I honestly scratch my head at why some people can't deal with slightly older looking actors, even if their appearances fit their roles. As you say, I think it may also be a problem with costuming, he looks pretty dashing with his hair tied up, but slightly haggard with his hair down.
