I thought based on the latest news,  production is aiming to air the drama early part of next year. So I’m hoping it will be first quarter and not July.

Is this drama pre-produced like DOTS?! How are they gonna start filming in this October but air the drama on 31 July?!

Hi @meme gogo. Yes, it is pre-produced. So that's exactly what they're going to do - film by October this year, then air it by July next year.

Kim Eun-Sook returns to SBS for the first time in seven years with 'The King: The Eternal Monarch'

The best hit-maker, Kim Eun-sook, will make a splendid comeback to her roots SBS with her new drama "The King: The Eternal Monarch."

"The King: The Eternal Monarch" is a fantasy romance drama set in the parallel world through collaboration between Yi-gon, the emperor of the Yi-gui Korean Empire, and Jeong-tae, a liberal Korean detective who seeks to protect someone's life, people, and love. The main characters, Igon and Jung Tae-eul, have been cast earlier, respectively, by Lee Min-ho and Kim Go-eun, and are now set to shoot.

In particular, the news that "The King: The Eternal Monarch" is to be aired on SBS is drawing more attention because of the special relationship with SBS and writer Kim Eun-sook as well as the explosive synergy that it has shown through its work.

Kim Eun-sook, who made her debut through the drama "Southern of the Sun" (2003) on SBS and was recognized for her strong writing, quickly rose to stardom by making success of "Lovers in Paris (2004), "Lovers in Prague" (2005), and "Lovers in Love" (2006).

Kim was even called the "Empress of Views" by succeeding in all of SBS's works every year, from "On Air" (2008), "City Hall" (2009), "Secret Garden" (2010), "A Gentleman's Dignity (2012) and "The Heirs" (2013).

Since then, she has received much love from the dramas "Descendants of the Sun (2016), "Goblin (2017)" and "Mr. Sunshine (2018)" and is now back on SBS.

"Kim Eun-sook has come back to her roots of SBS with her new drama 'The King: The Eternal Monarch'," an SBS source said. "As it did, you can look forward to the wonderful harmony that will be shown by SBS and Kim this time."

Meanwhile, the drama will be directed by Baek Sang-hoon PD, who already performed fantastic collaborations with Kim through "Descendants of the Sun," while the production will be by Hwah & Dam Pictures (CEO Yoon Ha-rim), who has always been with Kim, and Studio Dragon.

The drama "The King: Lord of Eternity" will begin shooting in the second half of 2019 and will air in the first half of 2020 to heat up viewers around the world as well as in Korea.

Lee Min Ho & Kim Go Eun’s New Drama Secures Broadcast Spot On SBS

20190520_091104-660x400.jpg

EAGERLY-AWAITED BY DRAMA FANS, LEE MIN HO AND KIM GO EUN’S DRAMA WILL BE AIRED ON SBS.

Arguably, one of the most anticipated dramas next year, The King: The Eternal Monarch penned by Kim Eun Sook, finds home channel for its airing date in early 2020.

Returning to her roots, Kim began her career in SBS in drama South of the Sun (2003). Thereafter, she has written eight dramas for the network – all highly-regarded for its story and have mostly topped ratings.

Incidentally, the hero of the celebrated writer’s new project also had his last drama on SBS. Before his military service, Lee Min Ho starred in 2017 fantasy-romance The Legend of the Blue Sea.

Based on the narrative overview, The King: the Eternal Monarch features two settings following its parallel universe concept. It is also billed to showcase romantic moments for the hero and chosen female lead.

Fusing traditional and modern times, Lee Min Ho suits up to portray two roles. In one world, he is Korean Emperor Lee Gon, who wants to close the door that connects the two realms. In another world, he is South Korean detective, who protects the lives of the people and his loved ones. Both characters have to confront the Devil, the projected villain of the story.

Following Lee Min Ho’s dual portrayal, the same challenge will be tackled by Kim Go Eun. She suits up for contrasting characters in the two parallel words. In Korean empire she portrays criminal Luna. Meanwhile, in the Republic of Korea world, she is Jung Tae Eul, a detective who will team up with Lee Min Ho’s character Lee Gon.

Tasked to present antithesis characters, Kim acknowledged the heavy load but vows to accomplish it.

Particularly, the fact that the series will be aired on SBS is attracting much attention owing to the the special relationship between SBS and Kim Eun Sook. Having worked on remarkable projects together before, the viewers can expect an explosive television production.

Among the renowned dramas Kim wrote for SBS are Lovers in Paris (2004), City Hall(2009), Secret Garden (2010), A Gentleman’s Dignity (2012) and The Heirs (2013).

Building her impressive portfolio, she has received love from the dramas Descendants of the Sun (2016), Goblin (2017), and Mr. Sunshine (2018). All these dramas she has shared the glory with Director Lee Eung Bok, who will also helm the new series.

The King: The Eternal Monarch will be broadcast in the 1st half of 2020.

The new drama  The King: The Eternal Monarch is confirmed to be aired on SBS channel next year.

It is reported that the drama will be broadcasted on TV stations through SBS, and will be subsequently published on various platforms.
In this regard, Studio Dragon, one of the co-producers, said: It is different from the existing TV station in investing in part of the production fee, making TV series, and holding IP (intellectual property). Studio Dragon adopts a strategic model of planning and producing programs based on its own business capabilities and selling broadcast rights to TV stations and OTT platforms. Based on the open platform guidelines, it is not limited to internal circulation channels (tvN, OCN, etc.), and the platform suitable for each program is selected to maximize business results.

[Studio Dragon is a production company owned by CJ. The previous productions were broadcast on CJ's TV stations tvN, OCN, etc. The reason for selling this to the wireless station SBS, not on the internal TV platform such as tvN, is as above]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It seems that SBS bought the right at a very high price that Studio Dragon gave up to air on tvN.   :P
