On their way home, they are discussing why YSR giving her the heart gesture, especially to PKB she gave it twice. RJH got mad hearing that. He told them to go back home and noticed them tomorrow he will leave to escort YSR to Pyong Yang to make a passport. Back at home YSR is washing the dishes while worrying about whether her face will be bloated or not because she ate ramyeon for dinner. RJH just glared at her back and asked “ Do you have many hearts?”

YSR: Is there a person who has more than one heart? What do you mean?

RJH: Forget it. It will only make my head hurts

RJH: I will sleep on the bed tonight

YSR: But my back will be hurt

RJH: Whatever (he is sulking and slammed the door)

 

 

The next day, RJH and YSR go to Pyong Yang by train

"Crash Landing on You," a drama I watched with a North Korean defector from the North.

 

Inter-Korean relations have been strained due to the deadlock in denuclearization negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea. Still, a series of movies, dramas and documentaries on North Korea have been or are being aired. The movie "Baekdu Mountain," a story about a volcano erupting at Mount Baekdu and South Korea's military infiltrating the North, was released, while SBS aired "Sam Hammington's Faces North" about actual travels to North Korea by foreigners operating in South Korea.

 

The drama "Crash Landing on You" which tells the love story of a North Korean military officer who falls in love with an heir to a conglomerate who crash-landed in the North's DMZ in a paragliding accident was also first aired on tvN on 14 December. As a romantic comedy in which a South Korean woman (played by Son Ye-jin) and a North Korean man (played by Hyun Bin) fall in love with each other, it is attracting attention as it unfolds not only the main characters but also the Sa Taek Village, a village at the frontier of North Korea.

 

At a cafe in Hongje-dong, Seoul on 19th, The Fact met up with Kim Kyung-il, a North Korean defector from the "People’s Security" inspection bureau, the equivalent of the South’s police, and talked about how realistically the drama "Crash Landing on You" depicted the inside of North Korea.

 

Kim defected through international waters after his family was purged in North Korea. He politely refused to take photos and videos, saying he was cautious about his family that are still remaining in North Korea. Currently, Kim is engaged in research activities related to North Korea in South Korea.

 

Asked by reporters if he was aware of the drama, Kim replied, "As an expert, I am watching it because I am interested in all

things that have North Korean content." Based on his personal assessment, he opined that what has been broadcasted so far has been well made.

 

Kim said, "As there are few dramas and movies with North Korean content, wouldn’t it be obvious that I’ll

watch till the end of the drama?". He added, "I think the male lead, Hyun Bin, will defect for the sake of the female lead, Son Ye-jin." He made a personal prediction about the ending of the drama.

 

The following is an analysis of the scenes in the drama through our interview with Kim.
 

In the first episode of the drama "Crash Landing on You," the female lead Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) arrives at the North's front line village (Sa Taek Village).

 

#Take 1. Yoon Se-ri (Son Ye-jin) arrives at the North's frontier Sa Taek Village. And we hear the North Korean Satoori (dialect).

 

In the first episode, Yoon Se-ri, the female lead of the drama, will arrive in the North's frontier village - Sa Taek Village which is slightly away from the North's DMZ. We see the children going to school in a row and North Koreans doing their morning aerobics exercising  on a playground that reads "The People's Rock Garden." The main character, who thought her arrival was in South Korea, was shocked at the sight that unfolded before her eyes.

 

Kim commented on the scene in which Son Ye-jin said, “what’s that smell?”, saying, "It was a very good portrayal of a rural village that “smelled” very different from the city (the smell of “kimchi” because of the kimchi stored in each house) and North Korean food was also well portrayed, specifically, kimchi which is seen as being stored in the "kimchi cellar," a North Korean-style kimchi refrigerator - these are made to store kimchi in winter."

 

 

Regarding the North Korean dialect, he said, "There is definitely a difference from previous dramas about North Korea." A lot of the previous dramas with North Korean content did not use the typical North Korean term for mother, “Omani” but the Sinuiju dialect “Ah Ma” for mother, “ he said, adding, "I think we used a lot of Sinuiju words because there were many defectors from Sinuiju."

 

"In this drama, the characters generally speak the language of Pyongyang well," he said. "I think they did a lot of research."

 

In fact, Kwak Moon-an, a former North Korean defector, participated as an assistant writer in the production of the drama, and it has been reported that Baek Kyung-yoon, an expert in the North Korean language, was also consulted.
 

In the drama "Crash Landing on You," members of the military police squad are not wearing the typical mud-yellow military uniform but the "green frog military uniform." 

 

In May, when the tour of the Joint Security Area resumed, we see the actual North Korean guards left the “truce” village of Panmunjom and moved to their work place.

#Take 2. The North Korean army also wears the “green frog motif” uniform?

 

In the drama, members of the military police battalion are wearing "green frog motif uniform" instead of the mud yellow military uniform generally characteristic of the North Korean military. Recently, we see that the uniform of North Korean soldiers working at the “truce” village of Panmunjom had also also changed to those worn in the drama.

 

This part seems to have been well reflected in the drama. "The soldiers who work at the military police units wear “frog-patterned” uniform, but ordinary soldiers wear mud yellow uniform, which we know well," Kim said.

 

However, the lead character, though he belongs to the military police battalion, his uniform is different from that worn by the the soldiers who work at Panmunjom. In particular, his uniform is more modern than that worn by these soldiers. For example, they wouldn’t wear the “bulletproof vest” and night vision goggles.  Because this is a drama, this aspect is added to make the uniform more elaborate looking," Kim said.

 

#Take 3. North Korea's Security Department provides a safe haven for South Koreans on the run

 

Actor Kim Jung-hyun, who plays Koo Seung-jun is wanted in South Korea for having embezzled a large amount of public funds for his business. He pays a huge sum of money to the North's security department, so that he could channel his ill gotten gains through overseas accounts and keep them safe in the North until the limitation period stipulated in the statute of limitation ends.

 

For this scene, Kim said, "This probably applies to foreigners and not Koreans." As an example, he mentioned Kenji Fujimoto.  Japanese Fujimoto Kenji has been the sole sushi chef of Kim Jong Il for 13 years.  Kim analyzed, “Fujimoto Kenji has collected information from his stint", "Maybe reference is drawn from these examples." 

 

(Me: from Wikipedia- Kenji Fujimoto (藤本 健二, Fujimoto Kenji, born 1947) is the pen name of a Japanese chef who claimed that he was former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's personal sushi chef from 1988 to 2001. Fujimoto published a memoir in 2003 entitled I was Kim Jong-il's Cook, detailing many of his experiences with Kim Jong-il. Many people doubted the veracity of his claim. However, Fujimoto correctly predicted that Kim Jong-un (who was relatively unknown at that time) would be appointed as his father's successor as Supreme Leader instead of Kim Jong-nam, which was contrary to the prevailing consensus of experts on North Korean politics. Fujimoto's prediction proved true in December 2011. A classified U.S. diplomatic cable from Tokyo, leaked by WikiLeaks, revealed that he was the best and often the sole source of North Korean information for the Japanese spy agency.)

 

In the middle of the drama “Crash Landing on You," Ri Jeong-hyeok (Hyun Bin) is seen traveling freely in Switzerland. What kind of position is the Director/Minister of the General Political Bureau of the drama, who is the father of Hyun Bin?

 

 

#Take 4. Can you study in Switzerland if you are a son of the Minister of General Political Bureau?

 

The identity of the main lead, Captain Ri Jeong-hyeok, is revealed to be the second son of the Minister of the General Political Bureau. How much power does the position of Minister of the General Political Bureau have in North Korea? In addition, through a conversation with Yoon SeRi, it was revealed that in the past, Ri Jeong-hyeok was a genius pianist who majored in piano at a university. And the image of Ri, who is freely traveling in Switzerland, also appears in his recollection of the past.

 

Kim said, "The Minister of the General Political Bureau is the No. 1 leader in the military and the No. 3 ranking in North Korea," adding, "He is next to the supreme leader (Kim Jong-un) and chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly (Choi Ryong-hae). The General Administration of the People's Armed Forces and Security is under the General Political Bureau. It is the No. 1 ranking within the military," he said. Kim explained that the son of the Minister of general political bureau, Jung Do-myeon, was able to study abroad in Switzerland. To travel overseas, you need the approval certificate of the leader, but as the Minister of the general political bureau, you don’t. 

 

At this part, Kim shook his head slightly. When looking at the age of the director of the General Political Bureau, they are usually in their 70s and 80s, he said, adding that their children are then in their 50s and 60s. There is no case for a young director of the General Political Bureau. “But yes, if he has a child that is young enough, he can study abroad," he said.

 

#Take 5. Revealed Yoon Se-ri, Division 11’s spies?

 

When Yoon Se-ri, who speaks the Seoul language, was discovered, Ri avoided the crisis, saying she was a spy from "Division 11." When Yoon asked what Division 11 is, Ri said the spies in Division 11 are special agents sent to the South.

July 27, 1953, is the day after the end of the inter-Korean war, which North Korea calls a "war anniversary." "Until the year 2000, the number was 216 which was Kim Jong-il's birthday," Kim said. "That number was changed to 727 after the Kim Jong-un era took over."

 

He then said, “The owner who can use the 216 Benz is someone high up

in the ruling Workers' Party," adding, "In each province, there are just about one or two people. This is because only those registered as provincial party chairman and members of the ruling Workers' Party can use this number," he said.

#Take 7. North Koreans' love for 'Stairways to Heaven'?

 

North Koreans are known to watch many South Korean dramas. In the drama, there is a scene where a soldier made a mistake while on duty by failing to prevent the female lead from crossing the DMZ while watching "Stairways to Heaven (2003)”.

 

"The scene of North Korean soldiers watching dramas on duty is exaggerated," Kim said. "We cannot watch dramas like that inside the military unit. Even if you were to watch Korean dramas, you are talking about individuals secretly watching them while alone at home," he pointed out.

 

He also shared from his personal experience. In 2003, he said, "I was mobilized for censorship at that time," adding that out of a total of 300,000 South Korean dramas that were recalled in the six-month period, 30 to 40 percent of them were "Stairways to Heaven," a South Korean drama. Maybe the censorship didn't work as well as they had wanted."

 

Kim Kyung-il said, "The latest North Korean content shows the face of the inside of the North Korean autocratic society. It shows the idea that North Korea is a place where people live, it is only that it has not developed."

 

 

Asked by reporters what would happen if the drama were to spread to North Koreans, Kim said, "It will be accepted as fun," adding, "The South expects the spread of the Korean Wave will bring down the North's political system, but this is not the case.”

 

The reason for this is that, North Koreans are enjoying the system, not just obeying it," he explained. There is this “coexistence relationship" between the controller and the subject," he said.

 

In addition, he said that South Korean society's perception of North Korea has changed a bit through the recent release of contents related to the North. Previously, contents related to North Korea made in the South were topics of "counter-offensive," "destruction" and "inter-Korean confrontation," he said, adding that the latest content not only shows the face of the North's autocratic society, but also shows the idea that North Korea is a place where people live; the only thing is that it has not developed.

The Writer showed in Ep 5 that our OTP has fallen inextricably in love with each other.

SR (when ex bf cursed that she would have a taste of her own medicine and suffer while waiting up for her love): I will never be foolish enough to wait for anyone.

THEN - she ran like a fool to the door when she thought it was Jeong Hyeok at the door and ended up waiting the whole night and drinking herself silly pining for him.

 

2. They get so adorably jealous thinking that they are not the exclusive of the other with SeRi behaving like the entitled wife questioning the husband where and why he slept out the whole night and Jeong Hyeok, the jealous boyfriend expecting that fake fiancée SeRi’s “capitalist heart” should only be given to him and no one else 

After reading about this interview on the accuracy of the scenes and portrayal of life in NK, I also want to give a shoutout to show my appreciation for the research and effort put into the delivery of this drama for our enjoyment. 
 

This drama definitely deserves to be in Top drama list for the writing, superb acting of our leads and supporting cast as well and the fine directing (though the OTP paragliding part defies logic, it was so beautifully presented that I’ll gladly put logic aside).

Hyun Bin Prepares Thoughtful Gifts For “Crash Landing On You” Production Crew

 

 

Hyun Bin recently showed his thoughtfulness by giving warm gifts for the cold winter to the production staff of his current drama “Crash Landing on You.”

According to a Star News report on December 29, Hyun Bin recently surprised the drama staff members with padded vests while filming in the North Chungcheong Province. He brought warmth to the cold set with his sweet gift.

The report states that the crew was touched by Hyun Bin’s gift that was given amidst several continuous days of filming. One source told Star News, “Hyun Bin gifted the staff members with padded vests. Although it’s exhausting to film, we are still filming with laughter as we are receiving lots of love from many viewers.”

A source from Hyun Bin’s agency VAST Entertainment shared, “It is true that he prepared a small gift for each of the hard-working staff members. Hyun Bin is not the type to express himself or inform others publicly, so he didn’t reveal [this] to the public.”

“Crash Landing on You” is about a wealthy South Korean heiress named Yoon Se Ri (Son Ye Jin), who is forced to make an emergency landing in North Korea during a paragliding trip. There, she meets North Korean officer Ri Jung Hyuk (Hyun Bin).

The drama airs every Saturday and Sunday at 9 p.m. KST.

RJH discovering bugs and removing them from the hotel room -- can't help but imagine Hyun Bin doing this in real life whenever he travels abroad and checks in to a hotel. Well, as it is I'm already having difficulty separating Hyun Bin from RJH anyway.
