Watch: Upcoming Drama “Doctor Detective” Criticizes Societal Issues In New Teasers

by C. Hong

On June 26, upcoming drama “Doctor Detective” released two new teasers.

“Doctor Detective” is a medical investigative drama from SBS about a “doctor detective” uncovering the truth behind industrial accidents. It is the first drama directed by producing director Park Joon Woo, who leads the investigation show “Unanswered Questions” (also known as “The Its Know”).

The first teaser begins with a montage of clips from an evening news show talking about people who get hurt or sick because of their working environment. The caption onscreen shows the bleak statistic, “The annual average of people who suffer industrial accidents in South Korea is 92,769 people.” At the end of the news show, the anchor turns to the camera and asks, “Is your work environment safe?”

The teaser then shows Lee Ki Woo, Bong Tae Gyu, and Park Jin Hee, each with their own charismatic aura, meeting up in a dark warehouse.

The second teaser relies on what looks like a peaceful, ordinary scene outside a train station to highlight the darkness of the same annual average statistic. The scene then shifts to Post-Its that read, “This crazy society has killed another one of our youths again.”

Dark streetlit posters for medical-sleuth drama Doctor Detective

by tineybeanie

dpris4.jpg

Doctor Detective promises to be an intriguing social commentary that is half-sleuth, half-medical drama, starring Lee Ki-woo (Fate and Wrath), Bong Tae-kyu (Return), and Park Jin-hee (Return). The first posters were released, and I’m definitely getting mysterious vibes from them. The main theme of Doctor Detective is societal inequality, which leads to real-life irrational injustices.

The main poster showing all three characters, at an abandoned construction plan, says: “I will save them until the very end, and uncover everything.” The background and copy hints at possible industrial site accidents that can occur and be covered up without any attention.

Park Jin-hee plays a stubborn by-the-book doctor-detective who believes: “Abiding by rules is what makes a doctor, and is thus what governs the medical principle.” In contrast, Bong Tae-kyu plays a doctor with a flexible mindset and agile survival instinct, who believes: “There are only three things you need in the Republic of Korea! Wealth, appearance, and a way with words.” Finally, we have Lee Ki-woo who plays a third-generation chaebol that has, not only access to the facts, but also the absolute power to cover it up, should he choose. He believes “The world is already sideways. We are above it.”

Despite their different personalities and backgrounds, these three come together because of this one case. They make a powerful team, withstanding the might of corrupt ultimate power, to search for the truth.

SBS’s Wednesday-Thursday drama Doctor Detective, directed by Park Joon-woo and written by Song Yoon-hee, will begin on July 17.

by L. Kim

Doctor Detective” has released a new teaser!

The upcoming SBS drama will expose the dark side of society and tell the story of a “doctor detective” who uncovers the truth and reasons behind people who have become ill in society. Do Jung Eun (Park Jin Hee) is a genius occupational medicine specialist with an exceptional ability to concentrate, while Heo Min Ki (Bong Tae Gyu) is a doctor who decorates himself with luxurious designer brand clothes. He hopes to avenge the death of his father who died mysteriously 15 years ago.

The teaser starts off with Bong Tae Gyu pointing a golf club at someone while shouting in rage, “You shouldn’t live like that!” The video cuts to Park Jin Hee coolly analyzing the evidence at the industrial scene, while Bong Tae Gyu’s voice can be heard criticizing her for hiding evidence of industrial accidents and receiving money from companies. This heralds their quarrelsome first meeting and raises anticipation for their upcoming chemistry.

Park Geun Hyung, who plays the head of TL Group, confidently states, “I’m not someone who should be judged, but someone who does the judging.” Lee Ki Woo, who plays his son Choi Tae Young, smiles mysteriously as he claims, “There are so many people in the world who don’t know their place.”

5 Strong Female Characters To Look Forward To In “Doctor Detective”

by C. Hong
5aa8773c2d62411fab6f931933e6e43e.jpeg?s=

SBS’s “Doctor Detective” is anchored by a strong female cast!

“Doctor Detective” tells the story of a “doctor detective” who uncovers the truth behind people who have become ill in society due to occupational hazards and industrial accidents. It is directed by Park Joon Woo, who directs the investigation show “Unanswered Questions.”

The female cast includes Park Jin Hee, who plays the lead role and has received top billing alongside Lee Ki Woo and Bong Tae Gyu. Her character is named Do Jung Eun and she is described as a genius occupational medicine specialist with an exceptional ability to concentrate. She was investigating the death of a researcher when she was betrayed by the corporation TL Group and had her beloved daughter taken hostage. As a result, she became cynical and cold. However, the death of a subway door repair worker inspires her to resist TL Group and other companies and begin work as a “doctor detective.”

Park Ji Young has been cast in the role of Gong Il Soon, the founder of an organization called the Undiagnosed Disease Center (UDC). Gong Il Soon is a workaholic who has devoted her life, beginning in her late 30s, to make independent epidemiological research institutes that will bring justice to the weak and powerless in society. She was Do Jung Eun’s mentor 10 years ago and wants to recruit her into the UDC, making viewers anticipate the “womance” between Park Jin Hee and Park Ji Young.

Fighting against social injustice in new teaser for SBS Doctor Detective

by tccolb

dd10.jpg

A new video teaser has been released for upcoming SBS drama Doctor Detective, featuring lead actors Bong Tae-kyu (Return) and Park Jin-hee (Return). Also included in the teaser are supporting actors Lee Young-jin (The Great Seducer), Park Ji-young (Greasy Melo), Jung Gang-hee (Heart Surgeons), and Fujii Mina (Love and Fortune).

The characters of the story become connected through a research center for undetermined diseases, called the Undetermined Disease Center (UDC). Passionate and united by a common cause, they join forces to fight and resolve medical situations that continue due to corruptions in society, though they are easily preventable. One area of focus is the medical conditions caused by poor working environments, which result from companies restricting budgets and discouraging employee access to proper health and safety measures.

Among the leads, Park Jin-hee plays Dr. Do Joong-eun, who specializes in occupational environment and medical health. Bong Tae-kyu plays the chief research at the UDC, Dr. Heo Min-ki. And Lee Ki-woo (Fate and Wrath), who is unfortunately missing from the teaser, plays chaebol-heir Choi Tae-young. How he becomes involved in the cause is still unclear, but he has a long history with Park Jin-hee’s character. The two were previously married and he currently has custody of their young daughter.

Premiere Watch:

by stroopwafel

Doctor Detective

premwatch_justice44.jpg

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Crime, suspense
Episode count: 32 episodes (35 minute episodes)

Reasons to watch: Doctor Detective kind of sounds like someone playing madlibs, but the phrase is an apt description of Park Jin-hee and Bong Tae-kyu’s jobs. The two are doctors who investigate the causes of mysterious illnesses and deaths of people who worked at industrial sites. Though the main leads are doctors, the focus is less on the practice of medicine. Rather, the drama broaches the ways that industrial “accidents” affect the lowest rungs of society and the shadowy efforts put into covering up these issues rather than preventing them. Complicating their work, the very company they suspect is responsible for countless deaths is owned by Park Jin-hee’s former in-laws. Lee Ki-woo will play Park’s ex-husband and heir to the company. Though they’re divorced, he never stopped loving her and he cares more about winning her heart than inheriting the company. Does that mean he’d be willing to expose the rot and corruption in the family business? If you love complicated relationships and medical mysteries, give the show a watch.

“Doctor Detective” Jumps To No. 1 In Ratings, “Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung” And “Justice” Maintain Tight Race

by R. Jun
b000c8b036084b89acfb12e85bdf6f55.jpeg?s=

This week’s rush of premieres for Wednesday-Thursday dramas was a relatively tight ratings race, with the July 17 broadcast of KBS 2TV’s “Justice” beating out MBC’s “Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung” and SBS’s “Doctor Detective.”

On day two, all three dramas saw a decrease in ratings, but SBS’s “Doctor Detective,” a medical investigative drama starring Park Jin Hee and Lee Ki Woo, flipped the rankings and took the No. 1 spot from “Justice.” According to Nielsen Korea, the July 18 broadcast of the drama recorded 5.1 and 5.2 percent in viewership ratings (a 0.5 point decrease from the previous day).

Watch: Kwak Dong Yeon, Park Jin Hee, And Bong Tae Gyu Show Teamwork While Filming “Doctor Detective” Action Scene

Jul 19, 2019
by S. Nam

A new making-of video for SBS’s “Doctor Detective” has been released featuring Kwak Dong Yeon who made a special appearance in the first episode!

“Doctor Detective” is a medical investigative drama that exposes the dark side of society and tell the story of a “doctor detective” uncovering the truth and reasons behind people who have become ill in society. Park Jin Hee plays the role of Do Jung Eun, a genius occupational medicine specialist with an exceptional ability to concentrate, while Bong Tae Gyu plays Heo Min Ki, a doctor who decorates himself with luxurious designer brand clothes.

Kwak Dong Yeon plays the role of Jung Ha Rang, a platform screen door service engineer who’s graduated from a technical high school. Jung Ha Rang is a hardworking young laborer who is an employee of TL Metro’s subcontractor, but he has hopes of becoming a full-time employee at a large company because his current company will soon be taken over.

The making-of video starts off with a scene of Kwak Dong Yeon and Park Jin Hee meeting. Kwak Dong Yeon perfectly portrays both his character’s positive personality as well as a wide range of emotions while carrying out the action scenes of his character falling onto the subway tracks.

The actor continues to communicate with the director to make the scene even more realistic, asking, “Do I have to climb more upwards?” When the director requests, “Could you hold onto that and float there for a bit?” Kwak Dong Yeon carries out his instructions flawlessly.

During the rescue scene, Park Jin Hee gets help from Bong Tae Gyu, who doesn’t forget to make sure Kwak Dong Yeon is doing okay during the difficult action scenes. Afterwards, the director explains the final part of the rescue, where they all fall down across the platform, by pretending to make a leap. Park Jin Hee laughs, asking, “Like a frog?” Practicing with a mattress, the three actors smoothly wrap up the rehearsal with Bong Tae Gyu joking, “After [we fall], our eyes will meet,” making Park Jin Hee burst out laughing once more.

Though there is always a danger of 'hollywood-izing' or 'hallyu-izing' storylines, I am glad that KDramas, more & more, are addressing real issues....some of the scenes are heartbreakingly well done - highlighting the human stories behind the numbers, kudos to good cast - so far

a real emotional packed first ep 1. probably more popular with local viewers than international?

end of ep 2 was a real punch -- there was a real life ha rang. :(

I was also shocked as well to discover that this story was based on a true story. Terrible...

She's a doctor yet she goes around collecting evidence without gloves or mask, seems so ignorant. And how realistic is that they have to break in the workplace to collect the evidence? Aren't they part of the government with their own authority?

The only thing i like in this drama is Lee Ki Woo but so far his character is weak, i don't know what he wants and he's too emotional, he can't win. The old man and his aide are way above him. But I'm hoping the writer makes him a good man. And happy family ever after.

Off topic, what a pity that he broke up with his girlfriend, they were such lovely good looking couple.
