I guess the final take away is that the best revenge is moving on to a happier life.  JS appears to do this, while wishing him well and he is left with deep regrets, "you don't know what you've got til it's gone."  Sad, but realistic.

For me,  it is a bittersweet ending

I am glad that they showed us JS moved on,  and have a normal life.  And for SJ, just what he had said to JS,  "if he talked about his father and being an illegitimate child, and if he talked about the thing that VP offers him with JS. Will it be different than now?"  Glad that SJ knows since when he went wrong.

And that YR

Life is so easy for her,  huh

Destroying other's marriages, got a wealthy father,  got an easy job,  after things went wrong,  she just go to overseas and moved on.

What an easy ending for her.

And the last,  i am happy that they showed us, HA,  MN's life.

And SW being a scary senior in the office.

The preview seem to imply (I repeat imply) a possible reconciliation between Jung Sun/Sung Jun but I'm not holding my breath. It gave me slight pleasure that Sung Jun still considers himself the husband.. which rubs salt into Yu Ri's wound..:smirk:

South Koreans need to check themselves for their alcoholic intolerance, what happened to Jung Sun was unacceptable! Be it a VIP client or not.:P He caused serious harm & it could've gotten potentially worse.

Sang Woo's Why are there no secrets here?! got me LoL. He's really admirable, despite his privileged background he chose to work hard instead of relying on his connections more than I can say for Yu Ri. Who btw still whines that she's been dealt harshly by hands of fate, gee I wonder why?!

Have a very Merry X'mas everyone & Happy hols~

My relatives are still stuck in traffic...might as well use this time to post my initial reactions to others' reactions/recaps of the finale.

Let me start off with the obligatory reaction GIF towards the VIP screenwriter:

What I wish for is not for YR to have the satisfaction of ending the relationship. I want her to realise SJ had never loved her. Yet on the other hand, I don't want her to get another man's love so easily. So no, I don't hope for her to end up with the TG Group chaebol but I think that's where the ending would lead to, because the writer has always tried to paint YR as someone pure and in need of love. Which further irritated me.

First, sorry for cutting parts of your post @madinked :sweatingbullets:

Whoever said that this screenwriter is NOT biased towards YR...

Spoiler

giphy.gif

Talk about rewarding for bad behavior...:unamused:

EDIT: As I said yesterday, YR losing SJ is not punishment enough. And judging by the recaps and others' reactions, YR doesn't seem that "conflicted" with her loss of SJ other than shedding her usual crocodile tears (because the screenwriter is ABSOLUTELY certain that we the audience are begging to see those scenes...<_<).

Where's the comeuppance for YR nearly sabotaging JS and the VIP team other than her dismissal from the company? Why didn't she apologize to JS, HA, MN, SW, BH and JY? Oh that's right..according to the writer, poor destitute Cinderella YR is entitled to be that unapologetic towards the coworkers who actually vouched for her despite having the "VP's mistress" rumors and no work qualifications/background.:triumph:

Slightly off topic, but FYI, don't K-drama series (not so sure about dramas in U.S. or other countries) usually give the make-overs to main female protagonists halfway into the show? Did this writer think that the main FL is YR, not JS? If any female character should be the second FL, it's definitely HA (played flawlessly by Lee Chungah but sadly underutilized by the screenwriter/director in recent episodes) or MN (poignantly portrayed by Kwak Sunyoung, even with those "SJ's mistress" red herrings and almost flipping-tables moments of MN contemplating betrayal to the VIP team out of desperation towards her unexpected pregnancy and lack of job promotion).

it's a regular story of cheating with all its participants viewpoint shown, it's that simple..

and we the audience keep on asking for a justifiable reason for it

but there's none.. because no amount of reason will justify cheating.

in the end we all felt cheated.  they robbed us of a good ending.:grimace:

As much as a lot of people hate the ending, i do think it’s wise cause it’s more realistic that way. Others may think that YR had an easy way out but in reality people like YR (poor to becoming rich) would always choose the easier path plus she can’t possibly choose being poor again. As for SJ, i wish he have suffer more tbh. Overall, the drama took the more realistic ending, wasn’t bad but i do think one episode is too short to wrap up everything. Anyway, thanks for everyone I had a wonderful time reading all the opinions and views. Merry Christmas and  Advance happy new year.

The climax was indeed the identity of the mistress, then it is just cleaning up and tying loose ends. I am very glad JS and SJ broke up, given that SJ was doing the VP's dirty work and cheating on JS on his own volition; not even one conspiracy theory of ours, neither undercover nor blackmailed. It is just his substandard character. Even knowing that he loved his wife, he did not break up with YR, still doing things at her and her father's beck and call. If he were a real person, he would be the type to just ride with the VP and YR, even if he were neither happy nor in love with her,  until another YR appears. JS will move on but there will always be deep in her heart a sadness that remains. She is a strong woman, the sadness will not take over her life.

Like Dramamilk's reaction, why is the writer giving YR everything after destroying a marriage? She will carry a scar too, but in her case a well deserved one.

I wonder why everybody's life is spelt out but Dramamilk did not mention SJ's job or life, other than being 'ok'. A sad  but inevitable ending, I am going to watch 'Baby's day out'.

Everyone, instead of reaching for the tub  of Haagen Daz or Baskin Robbins, watch Baby's day out.

Too bad she was not pregnant, neither Jo In Sung nor So Ji Sub nor Gong Yoo was in the neighbourhood, too unrealistic for this show.

So glad I got to chat here, let's meet in another forum. I am sort of in and out of 'Gracious revenge', au revoir everyone.

Edit: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy holidays.

Reaction to reading the recap of 16 and reactions of those that watched it? I think two words would best describe  that for me and it is,  deflated and disillusioned. I think my expectations of how the drama unfolded and what really happened just clashed. I think so many viewers had better read on the characters and way better possible endings!  All the hype,  intensity,  and angst after the mistress reveal just started to crumble as though the writer/PD ran out of substantial material.  I feel like they based so much of the series off the mystery of "who is the mistress" that they were not as prepared on how to match the tone for the aftermath. It didn't have to be as intense but handled right they could've had hands down the #1 drama of 2019! Not to take away from the acting,  which was superb but as many kdramas do they can lose steam on the second half of the series after delivering the climactic  and "heart" of the drama.

I really wish the last four episodes weren't so full of SJ and YR interactions/ scenes. It really didn't develop the storyline other than compound facts of what we already knew,..yes he had an affair. Yes he left his wife and continued the affair with the mistress and continues to be more affectionate and considerate to her than he has been to JS since she found out about the affair.   But one of the biggest problem to that is,  like another viewer mentioned, is just didn't fit his personality. At least not with the material they gave us.

Instead of showing us all those scenes, some could have been cut to show us instead when he was on the precipice. What he was thinking to himself that justified why he kept crossing the line from right to wrong. Did he think of him and JS relationship as he progressed deeper into the dark side? Yes,  he kept his birth origins from her but was he always planning on living a life of continuous lies to the very end?  Why did he go back to YR? Why did he continue to hurt and humiliate JS when he initially didn't want her scarred?   How does he feel about her right now? I felt like even to the end,  the writer/PD never allowed him to be honest with JS. After their 10 years together and all that transpired after her finding out the he had an affair,  there is still not much explanation from SJ and not enough showing of his remorse to her. Like a live comment was made, at one point he should've been on his knees asking for forgiveness instead of his mother.   Again,  even to the end,  all we get are a couple sentences from him that aren't very revealing and a tone that is not as emotionally charged as one would expect given that he is about to permanently separate from a wife that he so loved at one point.  We see more angst on his face and intensity in his eyes with his conversation with YR which is again,  an injustice to JS and the relationship they once shared.

Ok, we get it.  It's better for them to separate but couldn't they have allowed him to fully unmask himself to JS at the end.  To give her better closure by seeing the real him,  with wounds, and true regret seeping from his very soul/ being?

I'm sure I'll have much more to say after actually watching the final episode but still again,  I'm left wanting.

I may be saying it too early since I haven't actually watched the final episode but @MrsSoJiSub @TXviewer @Maureen Mckay @NAB is now the time to bring out the pitchforks and torches? Lol

Well, I don't feel anything special about the ending but I think it's the way it should be! No violence but an amicable ending!  And I really love those flashbacks when he really fell for her! Then they got someone's evil eye! :( And as I said yesterday, Park Sung Jun lost both ladies at the end! :o

But anyway friends... :) Have a nice day!!!  See you at another drama thread!!

As far as I'm aware there is no evidence the writer changed anything due to audience response. The drama wrap party was on October 29th and the drama started airing on October 28th so I very much doubt anything was changed due to public opinion.

Thanks for setting the record straight! I saw some here-says floating around this idea.

I haven't seen the final episode yet and just waiting patiently for the sub, but the few posts that I've seen makes me think there was more Yuri than wanted which literally made me laugh out loud! :D A drama without hated characters to cause drama wouldn't be a drama.

So where is Gong Yoo????

Sigh I guess I'm asking a lot this time too :joy:

I see many are have a lot to say about Yu Ri, after ruining a marriage she got no karma or anything. But somehow I have different view about the couple and their ruined marriage.

All of those were Sung Joon's fault. If he's not swayed, like he said, if he ever honest with Jung Sun and ask about her opinion in everything, including the dirty tasks asked by the VP, I don't think Yu Ri can get a space between them.

The ending for Yu Ri is quite acceptable for me. In the end she will never get Sung Joon. And going abroad doesn't mean she accomplish something, but she is being "dump" by her own "called" family. (remember Kim Tan? he was sent abroad because Kim Won doesn't want him not because he should learn something and benefiting the company). Yu Ri is living a pathetic life even she's a rich girl now Her "called" family ignores her, her dad just think of her a product of his irresponsibility, her step mom even always talk low about her, her cousins, aunts and uncles ignores her. and now being sent abroad is just another saying "Just go, you disgrace us it will be better if you just stay low and never comeback.."

I'm happy to see our girls live cheerfully now. And even Hyuna is now living together and start her romance again. Mi Na really not quit her job and raising 4 boys  and turns out Ji Young is married hihihihi cheer for her cheerrings to the girls.

I'm so touched by this drama. The casts can portrayed their character very well. We're never a fan of an affair but the writer success deliver he story very well and I love it.

Pyo Ye Jin-shi if you ever read this please choose another kind of character in your next play. If you ever choose "someone who is chasing someone's else spouse" character again, we definitely need to sit together and talk about 1 or 2 cursing lines :joy: because I hate it when you successfully portray that kind character ever again.:joy:

See you in another drama dear VIPs :blush:

Now after reading drama milk's recap of episode16, I have one more take away; don't keep secrets from your significant other; it destroys intimacy.  HA and PR director talk about not keeping secrets, Mina almost lost her marriage because she wasn't honest with her husband, and SJ realizes if he had told JS the truth, it might have made a difference.  She said, "You didn't give me a chance to understand."

Merry Christmas, everyone!  I have so enjoyed sharing ideas with you!  See you in another drama, soon, I hope!

It sounds like it was the kind of ending I expected. I'm glad JS is happy. I'm okay with the ending for YR. Money doesn't buy happiness. Her new family doesn't love her, and I think the scene with the matchmaker a few episodes back showed that it's unlikely she'll find the kind of man and love she wants in her new social circle.

I think my favorite storyline ended up being Mina's, and I'm happy with what I read of the ending. It was pretty progressive for South Korea.
