What I see from SJ is big brother mode. He’s very protective of “that girl”. He hugs her when she is in her crying mode, which seems to be all the time. Never heard an “I loveyou” either.
Me thinks that might be about to change...I hope so.

I completely agree. No atter what he’s never been shown to show loving affection, just protective. And I keep thinking based on his surprise reactions of JS’s behavior that he really does have something that he’s doing in order to protect his wife. Why does he always look so shocked when his wife comes in guns shooting. I’m wondering for the first time if he’s truly got another story besides jerk cheating husband.

Maybe PSJ may even show some redemptive qualities in these last two weeks- who will he give the umbrella to?

for that umbrella scene next week, im noticing they wore same clothes as we also seen in VLOG (in vlog it was written the scene that was part of episode 13), so there will be Ma sang wo too in that scene, i hope MSW will suddenly run to reach NJS first to give JS umbrella and walk along with her before SJ chose who will he give the umbrella to. :)

He had made his choice many times on more important occasions. So why not an umbrella for the wet YR?

What could really hurt the wife is if she gets wet and the husband uses the umbrella she bought for them not to keep his mistress dry.

I don't understand why the writer is dragging the humiliation of JS. I get the message that he has made his choice. JS has too. Now move.

At this point, it doesn’t really matter whether he is in love with YR or not. The enormous amount of skinship and affection he is showering her knowing full well how she feels about him,  as a married man it’s just plain wrong in so many levels. Can you imagine your BF or husband does that to another woman and claims there’s nothing? Will you accept it???

Wow there is a lot of discussion (and anger) and I’m loving both.

I have watched both this weeks episodes and a lot of  things happened. What I really enjoy about this drama is how you have to pay attention to what characters are and are not saying in each scene,  and the masterful way scenes just cut off, leaving important details to be revealed at a later time.

Some things I noticed and enjoyed in ep 12.

  1. the girl power was all shades of amazing. Hyuna is such a strong character. I love the way she didn’t back down to anyone’s threats including the female HR’s advice of “protection” and societies means of trying to shame and victim blame women out of pressing charges. I adore how the office girls and decent men banded together to help her fight for herself, them, and future female employees.
  2. For all the (justified) hate on SJ, it’s telling of his character that even though he’s seemingly greedy to climb up top and would do anything even seemingly destroy his own marriage to get there, when he had freedom of unburdened choice, he chose to do right in standing with Hyuna and demanding/suggesting Sung Un support her, admit their faults, and change. To get into the sister presidents good graces (and keep that grace with VP) SJ could have easily given into her want of his “encouraging” Hyuna to drop things. He didn’t. She unlike the VP, has nothing on him. He doesn’t have to please her. He has nothing to loose with her, what does he have to lose with the VP.....
  3. JS. I adored JS’s confrontation with the VP. I adored that SJ was there because by gosh did his reaction say a lot. But first....
  4. All of SJ’s hurdles could be resolved if JS were sent to the Uslan branch. He would never have to see, or interact with her again. Out of site could be out of mind. For a man who seemingly wants to divorce and leave his wife, his actions often says otherwise. Why ask for her to be allowed to stay...now back to
  5. JS’s confrontation. She storms into the VP’s room, loud, bold, and not afraid (LOVED IT!!) the very opposite of SJ, She doesn’t ask, she tells, again the opposite of SJ who was humbly asking a favor if you will, in permission for JS to stay. She declares she has nothing to loose, BOOM, SJ reacted. JS’s marriage and SJ had been the things we all knew she feared to lose. She had been holding on so tight. Had SJ thought, hoped, firmly believed through all this JS would never let go? He seemingly loves YR and wants a divorce. Why would this stir a reaction?
  6. What does SJ have to lose? He’s at the VP’s beck and call because he has what to lose? In this very same seen where we’re being asked moves one will make and not make when they have “things to lose” have something or someone you are trying to protect, SJ had asked for JS not to be sent to Ulsan. The VP makes known that for him to grant that wish, it would have consequences aka you SJ have to give him VP something too (you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours). The scene then masterfully cuts off, but we’re told JS is no longer being transferred to Ulsan. She gets to stay in Seoul. What did SJ have to do/agree to, in order for VP to grant that request? What back scratching favor did he agree to? After this scene we see him once again very committed to YR’s side (also peep his look/body language when JS storms out. VP calls him back to attention.)
  7. VP’s wife gave JS a “gift” by throwing it out to JS of the very close relationship between VP and SJ and how both men have things to lose which is what seems to bind them. For some reason not that scene but just her place in the story and then the preview for next week, I was reminded of Daniel. Before Daniel leaves for America he “gifts” SJ (agrees to the deal) Trifone. A deal SJ needed badly and helps a lot in getting him the executive seat. But Daniel also leaves with this, “you're married to someone on your team right.” SJ says yes. We’re never shown which woman Daniel believes to be SJ’s wife. But, we the audience see/are shown that Daniel had been observing looks, something between SJ and whomever the woman is during the deal signing, and he came to the conclusions. Whom was SJ sharing looks and giving them right back for Daniel to come to such conclusions/assumptions?
  8. In the preview for ep 13, VPs wife is standing by YR. VP’s wife is looking at/observing the room and we the audience are made to see she notices JS and SJ in the room (I think they’re texting). She makes the comment to YR that she may have  replaced JS in the office, but how does she plan to replace her when it comes to SJ? Is she just being rightfully petty and proving YR where it hurts? Or did she see something (a look shared or unshared, an over avoidance, something)? Was it what Daniel saw?
  9. This is something that’s been bugging me. When JS first presents the assumed affair to VP at the dinner of doom, he laughs it off. Pictures are shown, JS leaves the room, SJ goes after her. The show cunningly cut off the scene so that we never heard/saw YR’s explanation of the aqusations to pops and step mommy dearest. When they come out, I read VP’s reaction way too cool for an affair and step mommy dearest scuff as he (SJ) done goofed, but was it an affair level of goof/disgust? Also I remember a scene where VP told/seemed to assure SJ all this wouldn’t cost him his marriage....I feel like a whole lot of people (including step mommy dearest) were in on some kind of initial plan. Since the original plan, YR’s feelings for SJ and JS believing there is an affair, derailed the whole plan. Since then all parties have been fumbling to keep it all together and on track. However JS’s beliefs and continued interferences keeps derailing things....

I’ll stop here lol. This is such a crafty and layered show. The things we’re shown and not shown. What’s said in a scene. Who’s involved in a scene, so good. Or maybe I’m giving the writer too much credit. Maybe I’m placing meaning where there is none lol. All I know is that until I’m shown a kiss/YR and SJ in bed; I still think there was no affair. YR is in a one sided love. Her feelings and actions has shifted plans. But most importantly none of it matters or justifies what SJ had put and continues to put JS through (unless she’s been part of this from the jump. She and SJ have plotted the whole thing. They are playing everyone and the show is playing all of us audience.....nah I ain’t ready for that conversation lol. This is not ‘Memento’ lol). There are not enough childhood traumas, present explanations, or blackmail material for me to forgive that. Unless you’re a government agent sworn to secrecy and or even if my or your life were in danger and that’s what you had to lose; should have trusted me enough tell me. You’re better half my richard simmons. Were that true he would have been told her! Team please-let-this-be-more-than-just-an-affair-writers-or-I’m-coming-after-you-but-still-too-little-too-late-SJ DIVORCE HIM JS!!!

I remember the scene when they are signing the papers on theTiphone deal. Daniel eyes shoot lasers to SJ and I thought JC as well. Then on the trip to the airport and Daniel questions SJ about the wedding ring. There has to be a reason the writers threw that into the mix.

Funny how you mention this scene cause I was very interested in it. I actually replayed a couple times and even paused cause it was a lot to take in with the scenes moving so quickly.

It looks like a cat and mouse game. JS has "poor" YR cornered, soaking in the rain.  JS is standing under some sort of cover, waiting to pounce,  and she is bone dry. Of course SJ bursts into the scene,  a knight with his umbrella....NOT!

Who will he choose? Turns out,  he doesn't really have to cause if you pause at SJ there is another male holding an umbrella behind him. I'm guessing it's the young chaebol that works in the VIP team.  SJ will either go to wife because he has to be professional and can't have others witnessing his special treatment towards YR or will he say F*#$ it and go to YR with "the" umbrella since she's the one soaking wet and his"love". As he quoted to his best friend, the one that makes him senseless and emotional. *insert barf emoji here * haven't figured out how to do emojis yet. Lol

Do I care who he goes to the umbrella with? Not really. Why? Because after that scene or even later than that,  he'll be comforting and HOLDING a distressed and yes again,  crying YR!! At the end of the day he is again by with YR side, like he said he would be. And at this point, I don't even care! No matter his reasons,  for JS sake or for his own, he doesnt deserve her.   Dude -You don't trust her to be with you through thick and thin,  through the good and the bad,  in sickness and in health.   You should have given her an opportunity to be there for you,  to choose you!  Youre right, she was the best thing that ever happened to you.  Your loss SJ!

JS fighting!!

I just read this quote and I think it's very fitting for our heroine:

"Women are Angels.

And when someone breaks off our wings,  we simply continue to fly....

On a broomstick

We're flexible like that"

Love it!  Don't provoke unless you're ready to bitten.  Bite hard JS, really hard!!! Lmao

After reading more feedback on this week's episodes, I guess I'll rant more here. Once more, apologies for multiple posts!

Finally, I was able to relieve all this pent-up pressure. No more reincarnations (actually, I'd run out of ways to re-assemble SJ), no more baking disasters, and yes, my husband is still alive. I've progressed from my righteous, vengeance-seeking mode to my amateur detective mode.

The big question: Just what is going on? Is the power couple (JS &SJ) so easily brought down? I have half an inkling that all the backstories are there just to mislead us into thinking that this is just about an affair. Remembering what I've read lately about the Korean chaebol families misuse of power in the workplace, I don't think we'll get the "big" reveal until the last episode. That's why I think SJ's carefully crafted "emotionless" expression is emphasized - I, personally, focused on that & I think, misread him. Maybe what we've seen so far is exactly what the VP & others in power have seen - a marriage held together by a thread, susceptible to any outside force; an under-reactive husband, an over-reactive wife, a recently lost child. Put all that together & you get a perfect set of sitting ducks. I think that scene where YR observed JS/SJ together was a clue. Here, YR, is your target. Your goal is to break these two up - we need to set one against the other in order for our plan to work. We know SJ is protective of the VIP team & we know JS is a straight arrow. That bond needs to be broken - we need people we can manipulate. So your job, YR, is divide so we can conquer.

Excellent deduction, @Takingthehighroad! That's my "optimistic" (code for, giving SJ the benefit of the doubt that he may no longer deserve, if only for JS's sake...-_-) take on the unraveling of this trajectory, given SJ's sudden intentions of staying by YR's side, the VP's overall reaction to JS's revealing of SJ's "affair" at work (JS's pending relocation, YR's unearned job promotion, the VP's advice to SJ on divorcing JS and marrying YR), and the reveal of YR sending the "SJ's mistress" text using JS's computer.

Not to sound like a broken record, but SJ made his choice to personally divulge his personal history and sentiment to YR while not being forthcoming about his relations with YR to JS when JS gave him the chance to come clean and salvage their marriage. Therefore, SJ should pay for putting JS through more agony over the "affair" at home AND work instead being truthful and steadfast at JS's side during and after their recovery from their grief over the stillbirth.

Nonetheless, I cannot help but consider that the person other than YR who'd benefit most from the overall destruction of the "power" couple is the VP. If only the competent, forthright JS be removed from potentially blocking the VP's unethical work tactics, then the VP would have full control over both the VIP team and SJ as his personal slave/lapdog to his misdeeds (and perhaps the company too).

To add on to what you posted, what better way to for the VP to execute the "Destroy the JS-SJ power couple and take over the VIP team and Sungwoon Department store" agenda by using YR to:

  1. Pose as the VP's "(il)legitimate" offspring and heir to the family's company and registry, since neither the VP nor his siblings have offspring.
  2. Observe the JS-SJ power couple from a distance (when JS and SJ were grocery shopping near YR's station) and assess their overall strengths and weaknesses.
  3. Exploit SJ's vulnerable state of mind (grief over his stillborn baby, his father's death, JS's emotional distance from SJ, etc.) so that SJ would empathize over YR's familial troubles and become emotionally invested in their relationship.
  4. Plant evidences of SJ's "affair"  at work, in SJ's car, etc. so that the forthright, tenacious JS would stop at nothing to get to the bottom of the truth about said "affair" after receiving no reassurance or clarity from the guilt-ridden, elusive SJ.
  5. Use JS's "reckless" exposure of SJ's and YR's "affair" as a work excuse for the VP to request JS's relocation/demotion to the food department in Ulsan, promote YR as branch manager of the VIP team, and guilt-trip SJ over his "affair" so that he'd remain by the VP's (and YR's) side at the expense of JS's marriage and career.

Suppose, in the aforementioned scenario, SJ now suspects foul play from the VP AND YR, thus pretending to comply with the VP's demands and stay by YR's side so that he'd assess the extent of their complicity in the (attempted) dissolution of SJ and JS's marriage and career? If that's the case, SJ better let JS in on the VP's (and YR's) agenda so that they, with their VIP team and maybe the VP's sister/chairwoman, will work together to turn the tables on the VP and YR. Of course, SJ will still pays the consequences for putting JS through the agony of his "affair" by not coming clean or effectively trying to make amends with JS before it affected JS's work position in the VIP team.

Now that's a "detective/mystery" plot twist that I'm sure we (as well as many Soompiers and viewers) can root for, instead of a plain "vengeance-seeking" adultery/mistress storyline that we're apparently watching now.

@KDramaLogic

Goodness I LOVED reading your posts. They were incredibly insightful!

I TOO truly hope that this drama is more than just a typical story about adultery. I’m literally just CLINGING onto the hope that there’s more to the story than what we’ve been shown so far. Otherwise, if SJ is truly nothing but a wad of garbage through and through, he better be punished by the end...

I’m terrified that all these brilliant theories are much deeper and more interesting than the actual storyline the drama writer has crafted. :/ A drama that aired not too long ago had me charmed from the start, but its plot weakened like halfway through and I kept waiting for some kind of ingenious twist, some kind of major development... redemption... Yeah, it never happened. The second half of the story was a constant decline in quality and logic...

My hope hasn’t been crushed yet because, like you said, the drama has a serious penchant for red herrings and the like, and there are many things we haven’t actually witnessed yet.

Whatever the truth is, I agree with you that SJ is still to blame. He’s caused JS an indescribable amount of pain!

@peachfuzz, I appreciate your kind words, and I enjoy reading your thoughtful posts as well!  :glasses:

Off-topic, if you don't mind my asking, which other drama were you referring that you were ultimately disappointed with?

Back on topic, like you (and most likely many Soompiers and viewers), I hope the VIP screenwriter rises to the challenge and throw in something similar to, if not better than, all those brilliant theories in this forum thread that will shed further light on and bring more reasonable justice for JS and SJ, as well as HA, MN, SW, and other well-meaning members of the Sungwoon Department store/VIP team. With a brilliant cast including Jang Nara, Lee Chungah, and Lee Sangyoon, they deserve more than just some thin, debasive story about adultery that's been shrouded in red herrings and equally engaging (inner) conflicts involving HA (workplace sexual harassment, her mother's debts, etc.), MN (struggles as a working mother of 2-going-on-3 children, unplanned pregnancy, almost betraying the VIP team by colluding with Director Bae, etc.), and so on.

Otherwise, if it turns out that we've wasted our precious 16 hours plodding through a slow-paced, red-herring-inundated, but typical adultery/mistress soap opera, I have a message for the VIP scriptwriter AND SJ (and maybe YR if we consider ONLY her destitution and her mother's ailments/death) in a (unrelated) GIF that I'll post in spoilers below:

One thing that has me baffled though is,  how and when did SJ become the VP's lackey.  Pre-baby loss, he looked like an upstanding guy, played by the rules,  like JS says in episode 3; he wasn't friendly but he had a warm heart,  diligent, and well mannered. Not the guy we see today. Hmm.

Another thing,  why when a cheater gets caught they ask for another chance. Then when they are given a chance, later they're the ones that end up leaving anyways..like wtf!

Still rewatching episode 3 and at the part where SJ ask for another chance,  he says he'll spend the rest of his life making it up to her. That lasted about a minute.  She gave him another chance and in no time he's the one that gives up, ask for a divorce,  and stays with supposed mistress. Like it wasn't hard enough the first time,  let's make you think we can work this out,  and then psych, I think I'll leave after all.  Thanks for giving me second chance though..wow! This dude is confused and messed up,  and all sorts of other things I can't type on this chat! Lol

I am going to print this quote & put it over my husband's side of the bed. And if I hadn't retired, I'd hand it to the powers-that-be at work (you know those in administration who have never been in a classroom yet still tell us how to teach). ;)

Y'all!! That revelation at the end of episode 12 floored me!! I honestly never considered that Yu Ri was the skank that was adultering with the adulterous husband!! I mean, she is one of the people in the office, but I had written her off as insignificant. She wasn't even at the back of my mind! :PMy jaw dropped, and I mean literally. There I was, mouth open, yelling at the screen like WHOA!!

From the pre-premiere conferences, I had already internalised the fact that SJ was going to descend from my good graces into villain territory, so I am enjoying his progress into the dark side. Ep 12 was especially awesome, a little bit preachy, but that didn't take away from the awesomeness of the episode. Most of all, I love how all the characters have a fleshed out storyline. I'm SO loving this show!

As usual in Kdrama land, the Soompi-ers are better script writers than the writer ! Hahaha.....lots of theories here but I have given up - I think it is gearing towards a simple plot of affair and the writer just threw in lots of trolls to keep viewers hooked !

YuRi had to be the VP's daughter : they referred to each other as father, daughter throughout. It will be a real dig on viewer's intelligence if she is actually the mistress masquerading as a daughter, I think. :D

I guess the remaining episodes will be about how Na Jung Sun gets back on her feet. Maybe her mother-in-law will reveal SJ's background, JS finally see light and sign the divorce papers. She gets a new job with either Triphone or the young man team member's family company. Perhaps she even gets a dog and name him "happy" !

YuRi and SJ should not have a happy ending. Viewers will be too pissed and even break their TV screen. Maybe rich grandpa will offer YuRi a choice :  breakup and go overseas to study OR get kicked out of the family. So SJ will be left alone and wallow in self-pity (I really dislike how this actor portray this character... mostly pan-faced and expressionless!)

Wow okay I just watched episode 12 and it confirms what I hate about drama's.  Women who think unavailable men are for the taking if they manipulate well enough.  Men who are taken but too spineless to stand their ground and protect what belongs to them.  Yes I know my words are a bit harsh.

The moment you exchange vows and rings means you SHOULD OF left any emotions for anyone else where it belongs in the past.  Instead he is being manipulated by someone who I beleive she thinks she does genuinely love him.  But he at this episode anyhow strikes me as feeling guilty.  He is confused and feeling a touch of guilt for his wife but the mistress hanging on, for lack of a better word, I think the funeral had him feeling oblidged to support her and not abandon her during this time.  Its striking up feelings to some level which is confusing him even more.

But the head is also trying to manipulate him as well, I figure that since he hasnt immediately jumped at the chance just yet he has a hope of redemption and coming back and trying to find some resolve.  If he turns which i hope they dont make his character that pathetic, then I am sorry to say I hope the wife takes him down to his knees, if the wife goes down he will feel even worse as he caused her downfall by what he hasnt stopped.

In the end I really hate weak characters, like the mistress who thinks she can manipulate and take what doesnt belong to her.  The moment he was married, he was not hers.  The weak and pitiful excuse for a husband who lacks respect for his wife enough to not only not tell her he still loves her and lets her suffer through it all alone and is standing in the middle all confused.  I just feel like reaching throught the screen and slapping him even though violence is not an answer.

I agree. All the misleading clues just to keep us watching. So sad, it means we have been duped into thinking the climax is yet to come. They are dragging more scenes which show SJ choosing YR. Preview shows, YR being promoted, more humiliation.

I prefer JS to be pregnant, then have the bollocks to chase him away and then find a good man for a father. 'In 'only you' I think, the husband got her best friend pregnant. So she did not let him near the kid as his punishment; he married the manipulative tart but she could not produce a child. That was divine punishment.
