An internet sensation aspires to conquer the screen

“In the face of love, these four men and women have no strategy, no experience, no courage, and no counterstrategy, but embark on a special romance in Soonjung Manhwa.”

This is how the new movie is being touted, and I’ve chosen not to translate the title because while “soonjung manhwa” literally means a “pure comic book,” it’s also the Korean term for what is more commonly known as “shoujo manga.” Here’s the Wikipedia definition of shoujo:

“[M]anga marketed to a female audience roughly between the ages of 10 and 18… [which] covers many subjects in a variety of narrative and graphic styles… often with a strong focus on human and romantic relationships and emotions.”

In any case, Soonjung Manwha has finished filming, and it seems like just the type of thing I’d go for. The movie is an adaptation of the internet manhwa which became a hit sensation, drawing in more than 60 million pageviews and building up an enthusiastic netizen audience.

The film stars Yoo Ji-tae (Oldboy) in the lead role, starring with Chae Jung-ahn (Coffee Prince), Lee Yeon-hee (East of Eden), and Kang In of Super Junior. Manning the camera is director Ryu Jang-ha, the writer for One Fine Spring Day and assistant director for Christmas in August

There’s a reason to be optimistic about the film with its sizable built-in fanbase from the internet original, plus its four good-looking stars (with two older and more experienced actors — Yoo, Chae — to balance out the other two hot young things, who target the younger market). But we won’t be able to find out for sure until the film opens on November 27.

유지태가 영화 ‘순정만화’에서 해맑은 로맨틱 남자로 돌아온다.

이 미 영화 ‘동감’ ‘봄날은 간다’ 등 여러 편의 멜로 영화에서 탁월한 감성연기를 보여준 유지태는 이번에도 따사로운 미소로 여성 팬들의 마음을 사로잡을 계획이다. 영화 ‘순정만화’는 사랑에 대해 수줍고 서툰 네 남녀의 특별한 연애 이야기. 유지태는 수줍음 많은 30살 청년 연우 역을 맡아 이연희와 멜로연기를 보여줄 계획이다. 연우는 어릴 때부터 혼자 자라 외로움에 익숙한 청년으로 감정을 제대로 표현하지 못하는 인물. 유지태는 “이번 연우는 주위에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 인물이다. 평범하지만 해맑은 인물로 어리바리한 면이 매력적이다”라며 “사랑할 때 모습이 나랑 비슷하다”라고 배역에 대해 평했다.

한편, 영화 ‘순정만화’는 강풀의 만화가 원작으로 인터넷에서 연재를 시작해 지금까지 6000만 명이 본 인기 만화. 유지태 이연희 채정안 강인이 출연하며 11월27일 극장에서 개봉된다.

Yoo Jitae has proved his romance acting skills in the romance movies ’Ditto’ and ‘Spring Goes,’ and this time he is set to win the hearts of women fans with his warm smile. ‘Romantic Comic’ will be about the life of four men and women who do not know how to love. Yoo Jitae will take the role of a timid 30 year old man named Yeonwoo, and his partner in the movie will be Lee Yeonhee. Yeonwoo will be a man who is used to being lonely since he was young, and therefore is not good at expressing his feelings. Yoo Jitae says, “Yeonwoo is a type of person who you can see in everyday life. He is ordinary and pure, but his naivety is his charm. The way he loves a woman is like myself.”

‘Romantic Comic’ is based on an Internet novel, which has already attracted more than 60 million fans. Yoo Jitae, Lee Yeonhee, Chae Jungahn, and Kang In will be in the movie, and it will be released on November 27th.

'Celebrity's Sweetheart' Knocks on Viewer's Hearts

Princess Ji-woo is back. Choi Ji-woo, referred to as "Princess Ji-woo" by her Japanese fans and a famous hallyu star with her tall, model-like figure and innocent looks, is returning to the small screen with SBS drama "Celebrity’s Sweetheart.’'

Choi, who has been acting for 14 years, will play, not surprisingly, beautiful actress Lee Marie, who falls for a poor yet smart ghostwriter, played by fellow actor Yoo Ji-tae.

The press conference, which was held last week, was full of not only reporters, but also overseas fans hands with flowers and presents for the 33-year-old actress and fellow actors. "I was inspired by the movie 'Notting Hill.’ My goal was to offer a full gift set of 'melo' (melodramas)," said Bu Sung-chul, the producer.

Indeed, the short clip of the drama showed the perfect tools for a perfect Korean melodrama: a beautiful, yet lonely top actress, a poor but talented writer-to-be, a rich chaebol heir and even a nosy tabloid reporter. "It was actually a bit embarrassing to play an actress. The scenes where I had to walk the red carpet were actually quite awkward, because I had to act it. But the scenes where Marie becomes devastated by Internet rumors and wants to be someone special for only one person and not the public, was also easy to understand,’’ the star from "Winter Sonata" (2002) and "Stairway to Heaven" (2003) said.

Unlike veteran television star Choi, this is the first drama for Yoo, who became popular thanks to his performance in "Oldboy" (2003). "I found a new aspect of acting by shooting the drama. While acting in a movie feels like I become a part of the film, working on a drama is like growing side by side with the drama itself," said Yoo.

While Yoo was busy lecturing in classrooms and writing novels in the drama, Choi showed her feminine side with several scenes of her practicing ballet. The actress admitted that she learned professionally for the past eight months. "It was really me doing that scene!" she laughed.

When asked if she was worried of her typecast image as the damsel in distress, Choi smiled and said she didn’t think it was bad to have a certain image. "I think I have presented quite different roles in the dramas that I have starred in. I believe it’s important for an actor to show different roles, but I don’t think it’s bad to have a trademark image," she said.

The producer, however, thought Choi was perfect for the role and added that he was honored to be working with one of Asia’s top stars. "My goal was simple. I wanted to bring Choi, who is one of the best melodramatic heroines in both TV dramas and movies, and make a sweet and heartbreaking piece. Choi is especially good in sad melodramas, so she was fit for the role," he said.

"It’s warm and sweet, perfect for the winter season," Choi added.

"Celebrity’s Sweetheart" will start airing at 9:55 Dec. 10 on SBS.
