Drama portrays life of freedom fighter 
MBC TV series to rekindle controversy about him

MBC's upcoming blockbuster period drama "Different Dreams" will portray the life of legendary independence fighter Kim Won-bong.

 

The drama is set in Seoul, Manchuria and Shanghai during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea (1910-1945). 

 

Starring Yoo Ji-tae and Lee Yo-won, the story revolves around Kim Won-bong, who organized a group of Korean independence fighters called Uiyeoldan at the age of 22 and led armed resistance against the Japanese imperialists. 

 

Actress Lee plays a surgeon named Lee Young-jin, a Korean adopted by a Japanese couple. She later becomes a spy for the Korean government-in-exile in Shanghai. 

 

It is being broadcast to commemorate the centennial of the March 1 Independence Movement and establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai.

 

Yoon Sang-ho, director of the upcoming drama, said he wanted to make "the second Eyes of Dawn," referencing MBC's hit drama, aired between October 1991 and February 1992. 

 

"That drama was a masterpiece that depicted the pains of Korea's modern history. When I was young, the heart-touching drama captivated me so much that I thought I would like to do a project set in that period too," the director said during a press event at the network's headquarters in Seoul, Tuesday. 

 

"Uiyeoldan was the most threatening organization to Japan in Korea's independence movement history. Along with its leader Kim Won-bong, many other activists' lives have been reflected in the story."

 

The Saturday drama, made on a budget of 20 billion won, has finished filming 30 of its 40 episodes, each 30 minutes long. 

 

The late patriot has more recently been embroiled in a controversy between the government and conservative rightist groups. After the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs moved to recognize Kim as an independence fighter to confer an order on him, conservative politicians and the Korean Veterans Association objected for his later activities in support of North Korea. 

 

No one denies Kim's selfless and relentless fight for national independence before liberation in 1945. Along with Uiyeoldan, he also organized the Korean Volunteers Army in 1938 and later served as the deputy commander of the Korean Liberation Army. 

 

In fact, due to his armed independence activities, including assassinations of Japanese officials and their collaborators and attacks on Japanese military sites, the Japanese police put a bigger bounty on Kim's head than Kim Koo, the longest-running and final president of the provisional government.

 

While Kim Koo is hailed as a national hero, Kim Won-bong's patriotic deeds have mostly been ignored. 

 

Kim Won-bong went to the North in 1948 and is alleged to have become a statesman who contributed to establishment of the regime there. But Kim Il-sung purged him in 1958.

 

Under the current law, the honorable treatment of independence fighters is limited to those who "didn't directly contribute to the establishment of the North Korean regime." 

 

"In the 1920s and 1930s, various activists with the single goal of independence sought their own ways depending on their different ideologies and values. There were conflicts between different groups but after all, they joined hands together for independence," the drama's chief producer Kim Seung-mo said. 

 

"I knew the risk of making a big budget drama. But marking the centennial, I felt some responsibility myself to make this drama in order to pay tribute to their heroic lives and sacrifices," Yoon said.

 

The drama will premiere May 4 at 9:05 p.m. on MBC.

Yoo Ji Tae and Kim Hyo Jin are now parents of two children!

 

On April 15, Yoo Ji Tae’s agency BH Entertainment stated, “Yoo Ji Tae’s wife Kim Hyo Jin gave birth to a son today. Yoo Ji Tae is helping his wife with her recovery by her side. We ask for your warm wishes and blessings.”

 

Kim Hyo Jin’s agency Namoo Actors added, “The mother is very healthy and happy about the birth [of her son]. Yoo Ji Tae is also staying by her side and helping with her recovery.”

 

The couple met for the first time in 2003 as models for a clothing brand and went public with their relationship in 2007. After getting married in 2011, the couple welcomed their first son into the family in 2014.

 

Meanwhile, Yoo Ji Tae is confirmed for the upcoming MBC historical drama “Different Dreams,” which will also be available on Viki with English subtitles!

Actors Kim Hyo-jin and Yoo Ji-tae welcomed their second child on Monday, according to their management agencies.

 

In a joint press release on the same day, the agencies said that Kim gave birth to a son and both the mother and the baby are healthy.

 

"The family is delighted by the new arrival, and Yoo is by Kim's side to share the joy," they added.

 

The two first met while shooting a commercial for a clothing company in 2003, and became romantically involved in 2007. They got married in 2011, and had their first son in 2014.

 

Yoo is currently shooting a period drama that will be aired on MBC next month.

Yoo Ji-tae Stills Released for "Different Dreams"

On April 17th the upcoming MBC drama "Different Dreams" released still cuts of Yoo Ji-tae's character. In them, he can be seen handling a firearm and also riding a horse.

"Different Dreams" takes place during the Japanese colonial era of Korean history. The main character, played by Lee Yo-won, is a Korean doctor who was raised by the Japanese. Yoo Ji-tae's character, by contrast, is a Korean resistance fighter who through some specific means as yet unknown comes into contact with the doctor.

 

 

The new still cuts are intended to demonstrate that "Different Dreams" will be an action-oriented drama. Yoo Ji-tae's highly dramatic posing in the pictures has obvious heroic undertones. Saturday/Sunday timeslot notwithstanding the drama may be attempting to hit a filmic styled niche similar to that of "The Assassination" or "The Age of Shadows".

 

 

The production company behind "Different Dreams" has expressed strong confidence in Yoo Ji-tae's being well-suited for the role. They say he brings tough, manly charisma to the heroic life of a hot-blooded-hero. "Different Dreams" is expected to start airing sometine in June.

Spy thriller tells story of independence fighters

MBC's new blockbuster period spy thriller "Different Dreams," focused on the life of legendary independence fighter Kim Won-bong, kicked off on Saturday. 

 

The 20 billion won-budget spy action series is designed to commemorate the centennial of the March 1 Independence Movement and establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai. The drama revolves around Kim, who organized a group of Korean independence fighters, called Uiyeoldan, at the age of 22 and led an armed resistance against the Japanese imperialists. 

 

The drama, starring Yoo Ji-tae as Kim Won-bong and Lee Yo-won as Lee Young-jin, debuted receiving fairly good ratings of over 7 percent. The first four episodes, each 30-minutes long, aired Saturday and the drama's fast-paced plot successfully encompassed various walks of life in the history of independence movement under Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945). 

 

The young, militant, patriotic members of Uiyeoldan, led by Kim Won-bong, in a secret meeting recite the Declaration of Joseon Revolution, written by Sin Chae-ho in 1923, and swear to sacrifice themselves for the independence of the country. 

 

Meanwhile, Park Hyuk (played by Heo Ji-won), a long-time Uiyeoldan member, turns his back and tries to buy his future in Japan by passing critical information about a Korean spy to the Japanese police. Faced with Kim, who came to kill the betrayer, Park asks back, "Do we have a nation? What has the country given to me? It only gave me starvation and oppression. The King brought in foreign armies to kill its own people, while high ranking officials only care about fattening their own pockets. What kind of a nation is this?" he retorts. 

 

Kim Nam-ok (Cho Bok-rae), another Uiyeoldan member on his mission to kill his former comrade and betrayer Park, hesitates and fails to kill his target.

 

The drama also featured freedom fighters with different ideologies and values but the same goal of achieving independence. The female lead character Lee Young-jin, played by actress Lee, is a Korean who was adopted by a Japanese couple and grew up to be a doctor. She later turned out to be a spy for the Provisional Government, working under the code name of "Blue Bird." 

 

On a ferry heading to Shanghai, Lee meets Kim Won-bong. Regarding the death of her close friend and fellow doctor Esther Park, who gets shot after her failed attempt to inject poison into the Japanese officer responsible for killing her entire village including her parents, Kim Won-bong says, "What she has done, whether it was personal revenge or by order of the Provisional Government, was the right decision."

 

But Lee retorted, "Is 'blood for blood' right?" 

 

The key points of the upcoming episodes will be how Kim and Lee, both with different visions, can cooperate in Shanghai and work towards independence. Also anticipated are more adrenaline-pumping action scenes in the spy period drama. 

 

The drama's first episode ended, showing black-and-white photos of the real patriotic figures who inspired the TV series, including Esther Park, the first female Korean physician and independence fighter; Ji Cheong-cheon, superintendent of the Sinheung Military Academy where new leaders of the Korean forces were being trained; and Ji's second daughter and freedom fighter Ji Bok-young.

"Different Dreams" Comes Under Scrutiny

With a huge budget of 200 billion won (~17 million US dollars) expectations have been high for "Different Dreams". But a lot of the reaction to the drama has been muted. With a first weekend of ratings hovering in the range of 5-7%, the drama's long term viability is an open question.

One major issue in Korean discussions has been Yoo Ji-tae's portrayal of Korean freedom fighter Kim Won-bong. The main point of criticism is that Yoo Ji-tae is making Kim Won-bong seem too pretty and glamorous. Kim Won-bong was known for getting his hands dirty, yet the drama's core concept is romantic in execution.

 

The use of a real-life freedom fighter is also problematic. The real world Kim Won-bong eventually joined the North Korean government when the peninsula was partitioned. While this has no bearing on the plot of "Different Dreams", which takes place long before the partition took place, the potential political problems of such a portrayal are obvious.

 

Not that "Different Dreams" is the first time Kim Won-bong has appeared on film. Cho Seung-woo briefly played Kim Won-bong in a cameo appearance in "The Assassination"- but as a cameo appearance, it was not necessary for the action-oriented movie to go into detail about his motivation.

 

The degree to which this really matters to "Different Dreams" either critically or commercially is at this point ambiguous. At a press conference for "Different Dreams" that was held on May 2nd Yoo Ji-tae stated that he was portraying Kim Won-bong symbolically rather than literally. This kind of attitude is normal for historical adaptations.

On May 29th Kim Hyo-jin posted a photo of her son on Instagram. In the picture he can be seen fiddling with a sliver of clover. According to the caption, he is trying to fashion it into a ring.

While the boy's face is not easily visible the resemblance to Kim Hyo-jin as well as her husband Yoo Ji-tae is notable. The boy was born in 2014, the couple having married in 2011. On the fifteenth of May Kim Hyo-jin gave birth to his younger brother.
