Netflix unveiled its plan to spend US$500 million this year on films and series produced in South Korea during an online “See What's Next Korea 2021” event on Feb. 25.

Kim Min-young, vice president of content for Netflix in Korea and Southeast Asia, said, “As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of our expansion into Korea this year, we plan to invest US$500 million in presenting 13 new works of Korean content.”

Since launching its South Korean service in 2016, Netflix has invested a total of 770 billion won (US$685 million). Its efforts have resulted in series that garnered major attention, including “Kingdom” (2019–) and “Sweet Home” (2020–).

With its latest announcement, the service is signaling plans for an aggressive investment push during 2021 — amounting to over 70 percent of its total combined investment over the past four years.

Netflix also shared details about its 13 new productions. Nine of them are drama series: “The Silent Sea,” a space opera starring Gong Yoo and Bae Doo-na; “Round Six,” a survival drama with Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo; “Hellbound,” a supernatural-themed series starring Yoo Ah-in and Park Jung-min; a second season of “Love Alarm” starring Kim So-hyun, Jung Ga-ram and Song Kang; “Move to Heaven,” a Lee Je-hoon vehicle that looks at the stories of dead people from a humanist perspective; “D.P.,” a military drama starring Jung Hae-in; “My Name,” a noir series starring Han So-hee, Park Hwi-soon and Ahn Bo-hyun; the zombie drama “All of Us Are Dead,” and “Kingdom: Ashin of the North'' with Jun Ji-hyun.

Also on the lineup are “So Not Worth It,” a sitcom about students from different countries living at a university’s international dormitory; “Paik’s Spirit,” a reality show on Korean drinking, food and culture made in collaboration with celebrity restaurateur Paik Jong-won; and “Lee Soo-geun: The Sense Coach,” a stand-up special featuring Lee Soo-geun. “Night in Paradise,” a film directed by Park Hoon-jung, will be appearing as well.

Actor Jung Woo-sung, who is producing “The Silent Sea,” said, “The sci-fi genre itself is a new challenge. We’ve put a lot of work into the moon base and other sets, and it’s also our first attempt at things like zero-gravity and low-gravity filming.”

Netflix to invest $500m in Korean content in 2021

BY JEAN NOH | 25 FEBRUARY 2021

Netflix has unveiled plans to spend nearly $500m on Korean films and TV series in 2021.

In a virtual press event on Thursday (February 25), the streaming giant revealed the significant investment alongside a slate of content led by two new original features, BDSM romance Moral Sense and action film Carter, from the director The Villainess, Jung Byung-gil.

The slate also includes series Hellbound, from Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, and space drama series The Silent Sea.

“Over the last two years, we’ve seen the world falling in love with incredible Korean content, made in Korea and watched by the world on Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix. “This includes a recent global hit Sweet Home, that 22 million households chose to watch.”

He name-checked other popular Korean content such as zombie-themed Kingdom and #Alive, young adult scripted series Extracurricular, K-pop documentary Blackpink: Light Up the Sky, romantic North-South Korean drama Crash Landing On You and recent sci-fi film Space Sweepers.

“Since 2016, we have made 200+ Netflix Asian original series and films, including about 80 in Korea,” he added. “Our investment in Korean content surpassed $700m and we recently signed two deals for studio spaces, which will allow us to continue making great content in Korea as Korean content becomes the world’s entertainment trend.”

Introducing the fresh slate, Minyoung Kim, vice president of content for Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand for Netflix, revealed the streaming giant had 3.8 million paid memberships in Korea as of the end of 2020.

Fresh slate

Moral Sense follows a seemingly clean-cut office worker who keeps his BDSM tendencies to himself, until his female co-worker accidentally opens his mail and finds a leash. The film will be directed by Park Hyun-jin (Like For Likes, Lovers Of 6 Years) based on a web comic of the same name.

Carter follows a man after he wakes up in a motel room with no recollection of who he is, except for a voice in his ear that calls him ‘Carter’ and orders him to go on a mission to save a kidnapped girl. The one-scene, one-cut action film is directed by Jung, whose The Villainess played in Cannes’ Midnight section in 2017.

Hellbound is about a smart, self-assured lawyer who goes up against the New Truth Church and its extremist Arrowhead devotees. Written by Train To Busan director Yeon and Choi Gyu-seok, author of the popular web comic Songgo, the series stars Yoo Ah-in, Park Jung-min, Kim Hyun-joo, Won Jin-ah and Yang Ik-june.

Space drama series The Silent Sea, starring Bae Doona, Gong Yoo and Lee Joon, is written by Mother scriptwriter Park Eun-kyo and executive produced by Jung Woo-sung - perhaps best known as an actor in films such as Asura: The City Of Madness.

Other titles include Korean drama Squid Game, directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk and starring Lee Jung-jae and Park Hae-soo; Kingdom: Ashin of the North, a standalone episode in the period zombie series; new reality series Baik’s Spirit, documentaries like My Love; and Netflix’s first Korean sitcom, So Not Worth It.

Kim Min-young, Netflix vice president of content, speaks during “See What’s Next Korea 2021” on Thursday. (Netflix)

Global streaming giant Netflix introduced numerous original series and movies planned for 2021, along with its plans to invest 550 billion won ($496 million) in Korean content this year.

Netflix held the online press conference “See What’s Next Korea 2021” on Thursday to commemorate the fifth year of Netflix service in Korea. During the event, Netflix released still scenes of many original series planned for this year and announced the creation of two original Netflix Korean movies, “Moral Sense” and “Carter.”

“Korean content has gone across borders and is reaching out to the global audience,” said Kim Min-young, vice president of content at Netflix. “For 2021, we will invest approximately $500 million in Korean content. This is our attempt to create Korean content together and make the Korean production industry grow as a whole. We will do our best to make Korean content known throughout the world.”

In addition, Don Kang, director of content, and Kim Tae-won, director of movies, announced that Netflix will work with Korean producers to create two original Korean movies, “Carter” and “Moral Sense.”

“Carter” will be an action blockbuster by director Jeong Byeong-gil of “The Villainess” (2017) and “Confessions of Murder” (2012).

“‘Carter’ sprang from the idea of what it would be like for a man who loses all his memory to run away from the moment he wakes till the end of the movie,” said Jeong.

“Moral Sense” will be the first romance genre Korean movie made by Netflix. Based on the popular webtoon with the same name, the romance will revolve around the relationship between a man with an unusual sexual preference and a coworker who happens to come across the secret.

Netflix also disclosed information on multiple original series planned for the year.

The second season of “Love Alarm,” about an app that rings if someone in the vicinity likes you, will kick off on March 12. Also human drama “Move to Heaven,” about trauma cleaners, will premiere within the first half of the year.

“D.P.” featuring actor Jung Hae-in and about military police, “My Name” about a daughter entering the police force in order to investigate secrets behind her father’s death, “All of Us Are Dead” that continues the recent Korean zombie tradition, sitcom “So Not Worth It” about multicultural students in a college dormitory, “Paik’s Spirit” with restaurant tycoon Paik Jong-won introducing Korean alcohol and food to guests and stand-up comedy series “Lee Su-geun: The Sense Coach” are all scheduled to show on Netflix within the year.

Furthermore, a star-studded lineup of actors and directors is scheduled for 2021. “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” starring Jun Ji-hyun will be shown later in the year, as well as “Hellbound,” featuring Yoo Ah-in and directed by Yeon Sang-ho of “Train to Busan.” Also, “Squid Game” featuring actor Lee Jung-jae, is planned for release in the fall and sci-fi thriller “The Silent Sea” with Gong Yoo and Bae Doo-na and produced by Jung Woo-sung are on their way this year.

Vice President Kim attributed the success of Korean content in the world to the detail in the emotion.

“Although the infrastructure is important, I think the reason Korean content has been loved for so long is because of the emotions and sentiment in the content. Korean content focuses on the detail of emotion and expresses it well,” Kim said during a press interview after the event. “The ultimate goal of all the content for the viewers is to enjoy it.”

(LEAD) Netflix to invest $500 mln in S. Korea in 2021

By Kim Boram

SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Yonhap) -- Global streaming service Netflix said Thursday that it will funnel US$500 million into creating South Korean projects this year, including two films.

"Netflix has more than 200 million paid users across the world, including 3.8 million in South Korea," Kim Min-young, vice president of Netflix, said in an event streamed online. "For 2021, we will invest $500 million into Korean content and help the entire world enjoy Korean shows."

Since its Korean market debut in 2015, the U.S. entertainment giant has spent some $700 million on South Korean projects and made about 80 Korean originals, including the historical zombie thriller "Kingdom" and the horror series "Sweet Home."

https://s4.gifyu.com/images/191647CD-2E98-4FC2-AC9A-FA0833E01102.jpg

Netflix Vice President Kim Min-young speaks in an online event on Feb. 25, 2021, in this photo provided by Netflix. (PHOTO NOT FOR SALE) (Yonhap)

It unveiled its 2021 lineup of 13 original series, films and variety shows, including "Hellbound," written by Yeon Sang-ho of "Train to Busan" (2016); "Kingdom: Ashin of the North," a special episode from the popular "Kingdom" series; and the sci-fi mystery thriller "The Silent Sea," starring Gong Yoo and Bae Doona.

Netflix's first sitcom "So Not Worth It" is also on the list, along with the drama film "Night in Paradise," directed by Park Hoon-jung and invited to the Venice film festival last year.

As Netflix has enjoyed success in the country on the back of its hit Korean titles, it has set up two filming studios in cities just north of Seoul as part of its strategy to expand original content production.

Moreover, Netflix said it will start producing Korean original films in South Korea for the first time since its entry into the country in 2015. Its 2017 original film, Bong Joon-ho's adventure "Okja," was produced in the United States.

They are the action film "Carter," directed by Jung Byung-gil, and the webtoon-based romance "Moral Sense" by Park Hyun-jin. But it did not elaborate on details of release schedules and the cast of the cited films.

The company has focused more on Korean TV series so far and just bought the distribution rights of five Korean films, including "Time To Hunt," "Call" and "Space Sweepers," to release them on its platform without theatrical runs.

The move came as Netflix has been making efforts to cement its solid position in the Korean and Asian streaming markets in the face of fiercer competition this year.

Walt Disney Co. announced its plans to launch its flagship streaming service Disney+ in South Korea, while homegrown streamers like Wavve and Tving are moving to splurge on original content.

"Korean content is the key to lead our growth in the booming Asian market," Kim Min-young from Netflix said in a separate online press conference. "Thanks to Korean content, many Asian people who like Korean shows have come to Netflix."

She said Netflix has recognized the global popularity and attraction of Korean content over the past five years, which helped the company increase investment to a large extent in 2021. Korean shows' uniqueness in presenting emotions appeals to foreign viewers, she added.

Also, the Netflix official said she has received a flurry of suggestions on collaboration with Korean content from her overseas colleagues, and a planned remake of "Money Heist," a hit Netflix original made in Spain, in South Korea will be a first step.

"As Netflix is a global streaming platform, there are no borders in making quality content targeting global audiences," she said. "We want to create local content that resonates with people across the world."

Jeon Hye Jin and Jin Seon Kyu are in talks to join Jung Woo Sung in Lee Jung Jae’s directorial debut film Hunt.

According to a media outlet, Jeon Hye Jin and Jin Seon Kyu are considering taking their roles in Hunt.

Hunt is a spy action drama in which the ace agent of the National Security Agent Park Pyeong-ho (Lee Jung-Jae) and Kim Jeong-do (Jung Woo-sung), are confronted with the huge truth while chasing the general manager of the North Korean spy.

Hunt made headlines as the directorial debut film of the veteran actor Lee Jung Jae, who has worked on the screenplay for about 4 years. Sanai Pictures, which presented several tentpoles movies, including Money, The Spy Gone North, Asura: The City of Madness, and New World, will take charge of the production.

Lee Jung Jae will be the director and lead actor of the film at the same time. Earlier on, Lee’s best friend Jung Woo Sung confirmed his casting as Kim Jung Do, Park Pyung Ho’s partner, and a rival. These two actors haven’t worked on the same project despite their well-known friendship since the 1999 film City Of The Rising Sun.

Jeon Hye Jin has been offered a charismatic NIS agent role, who works in the same team as Jung Woo Sung. If she decides to take the role, she will have been back to the big screen two years after the release of Ashfall. If he decides to join the movie, Jin Seon Kyu will be playing another NIS agent from Lee Jung Jae’s team.

Hunt plans to complete its major casting and start filming in the first half of this year.

Longines 2021 New Product Launch Press Day, actor Jung Woo-sung attended

Swiss luxury watch brand LONGINES held a press presentation to introduce new products in 2021 at the Park Hyatt Hotel from the 27th to the 28th.

On this day, actor Jung Woo-sung, a Longines ambassador, visited the venue and lit up.

Jung Woo-sung created a luxury aura with a black suit and tie dress-up suit look and unrivaled presence.

At this 2021 Longines Press Day event attended by Jung Woo-sung, new products to be launched in the second half of this year were unveiled in advance, and the brand's latest collections were introduced.

In particular, Longines Dolce Vita's new model for women this year, which sensibly conveys the tribute to the sweet life unique to Italy, is equipped with a leather strap, and new colors, blue and brown white, are used.

Another fabulous watch from Longines' Heritage collection, the Longines Big Eye, is made of titanium, with a beautiful blue shaded petroleum dial and a calf leather brown strap.

Hydro Conquest, which has become one of the best-selling lines in the past few years, also stands out in two-tone models made of pink or yellow PVD and stainless steel.

All of them are automatic models and are manufactured in only one size of 41mm, and various black, blue, green, and gray colors are used on the ceramic bezel.

A new Legend Diver in a different color with a brown leather strap applied to the smoked brown dial version was also unveiled and attracted attention. This watch is very similar to the Legend Diver, first released in 1959, but it has advanced technical aspects and watch materials.

A Longines official said, "Longines is a brand that has maintained the craftsmanship for the past 190 years, and will continue to satisfy the needs of various customers based on Longines' unique heritage, elegance and technology." Meanwhile, Longines' new 2021 products will be available on the official website of Longines, department stores nationwide, and official online malls from the second half of the year.

Jung Woo-sung, this is what a man's grace is like.

Jung Woo-sung's new pictorial is like a spy movie.

jws2.jpg

jws3.jpg

jws4.jpg

Actor Jung Woo-sung decorated the cover of the June issue of Arena Homme Plus. His sailing on a yacht against the backdrop of emerald sea and transparent skies depicts epic scenes as if they were a part of a spy movie. Watch is the most important thing for spy agents. Jung Woo-sung, who is an embedder of Swiss luxury watch brand Lone, wore a hydro-conquest and legendary diver suitable for the sea, showed a strong masculinity in his soft elegance. He remained unflinchingly calm on a yacht swaying in the great broad of the sea.

In a subsequent interview, Jung Woo-sung said, "If I was a red-hot iron ball in the 1990s, I think it was a steel ball that suddenly cooled down, saying I knew something in the 2000s." "The 2010s were the time to quench the heated iron," he said. Asked about a man's coolness, he said, "I think being a cool man is also made in the process of finding individuality. My personality is Jung Woo Sung! Jung Woo Sung has been looking for Jung Woo Sung. Jung Woo-sung's pictorial and interview are available in the June issue of "Arena Homme Plus".

[PICK] Stars We Wish to See Again in Romance Movies

Love stories have become very rare recently. Romance is constantly seeking viewers on small screens, but the latest Korean films are mostly based on other genres. Indeed, some are them are in the production stage: Jeon Jong Seo and Son Seok Gu’s Romance Without Love (working title), Lee Dong Wook and Lim Su Jeong’s Single in Seoul, and Han Ji Min, Yoona, Kang Ha Neul’s Happy New Year. However, there are not many of them. Actors who have elicited various emotions in romance films in the past nowadays play characters with no love lines. Hoping to see the romantic side of the actors on the screen again, let’s relieve the disappointment with the movies introduced below.

Spoiler

Il Mare (2000)

Il Mare is a movie starring Lee Jung Jae and Jeon Ji Hyun, who rarely star in romance films nowadays. It depicts the story of a man and a woman living in a picturesque house called ‘Il Mare’ with a time difference of a year. They get to know each other’s existence by exchanging letters and slowly fall in love. Directed by Lee Hyun Seung, who received great attention for sophisticated color images with an urban sensibility in The Blue in You (1992) and Sunset into the Neon Lights (1995), it became the first Korean film to be remade in Hollywood (The Lake House, 2006). Unfortunately, it was relatively underrated at the time of its release compared to Ditto, which has a similar subject matter. Still, the affectionate love that unfolds in the beautiful footage and Kim Hyun Cheol’s “Must say goodbye” leave a long-lasting impression.

The Classic (2003)

The movie is based on Hwang Soon Won’s novel, Showers. My Sassy Girl director Kwak Jae Yong introduced the lead actors Son Ye Jin and Cho Seung Woo to the public. In it, Son Ye Jin played two roles in this movie and emerged as a star with clean and pure beauty. The story begins when a daughter accidentally finds her mother’s love letters from when she was young. Although it is somewhat sentimental, the meticulous setting that stimulates nostalgic feelings and the familiar melody of the music harmonize all together. Also, it is a rare work where you can see the heartbreaking performance of Cho Seung Woo, who has become a great actor.

Maundy Thursday (2006)

It is an adaptation of Gong Ji Young’s novel of the same title. The combination of Kang Dong Won and Lee Na Young attracted great attention. Director Song Hae Seong said, “If you look closely at the two actors, there is a subtle sadness. Just as Yoo Jung and Yun Su share similar wounds, the lead actors also resemble each other.” The movie tells the story of a man who faces the death penalty for a murder charge but desperately wants to live and a woman who has no attachment to life enough to attempt to commit suicide three times. Together, they miraculously share each other’s feelings. Despite having such different backgrounds and perspectives, the movie depicts the moment they bring out their painful wounds, loneliness, and despair to each other. Soon, they truly begin to connect, give comfort, and thus, love and understand each other. Although its subject is rather heavy, the harmony of plainspoken directing and the actors’ soul-stirring performances were impressive.

A Season of Good Rain (2009)

Many would consider A Moment to Remember (2004) as Jung Woo Sung’s best romance film in which he starred with Son Ye Jin. But I think his hidden masterpiece is A Season of Good Rain. Made by Christmas in August (1998) and One Fine Spring Day (2001) director Hur Jin Ho, A Season of Good Rain is a movie that brings excitement out of its beauty of simplicity. It follows a man and a woman who were attracted to each other while studying abroad in the US but could not open their hearts. After a long time, they run into each other in China and fall in love again. The chemistry between Jung Woo Sung and Gao Yuanyuan is good, and the whole movie is full of pleasantly refreshing feelings. The film has the lightest mood among director Hur Jin Ho’s other romance films.

Finding Mr. Destiny (2010)

Based on the musical of the same title, Finding Mr. Destiny is a film that focuses more on the actors, especially Gong Yoo, rather than the plot. It depicts the twists and turns of romance between Ji Woo, a girl who goes out to find her first love pushed by her father, and Ki Joon, who opened a search agency for his first love after being laid off because of his savvy personality. Although there were generic discrepancies caused by adapting a musical into a movie, Gong Yoo’s hot features made us overcome boredom, cringes, and cliches. He even looked dashing with the horrendous 2 to 8 side hair part. His collaboration with Lim Soo Jung is also lovely. At the end of the movie, you can listen to the song Gong Yoo sang himself. It is with a light melody that starts with the lyrics, “The moment we first met, I was quite scared of you.”

Late Autumn (2010)

Credit: CJ Entertainment

This movie drew a lot of attention as Hyun Bin, who gained huge popularity with Secret Garden, and Tang Wei of Lust and Caution co-starred. It is a remake of Lee Man Hee’s 1966 film of the same title. It depicts an unforgettable love between a female prisoner who takes a three-day vacation and a man who is on a run. Their love story in strange places lacks big dramatic events, but the sad and lonely emotions left by a short encounter followed by a long separation leave a lingering impression. The foggy and inclement weather in Seattle also doubles the loneliness of the film.

Edited Hong Hyun Jung: I am a K-content guide who publishes various articles for people to enjoy Korean movies and dramas deeper and richer. I’ll introduce you to the works that you can laugh, cry and sympathize with.
Translator Cho EK: I’m a big fan of Korean dramas and movies.
