original post: here

1. He's an all-time legend, but his 40s is more my style. He has that unique aura that he got once he aged, I freaking love it

2. Late 30s to early~mid40s
3. 20's!! Both are good and his aura is different, but he was too handsome in his 20s
4. He'll be in his legendary days even when he turns 100
5. He had that spark in his eyes during his 20s
6. Definitely when he was younger
7. 1 vote for his 40s
8. What the? I was thinking 20s when scrolling down...But what's happening with his 40s? I just want to die
9. Personally in his 40s.... He has that courteous and generous gentleman vibe that's f*cking handsome
10. If I think about him in Beat, it has to be in his 20s

SEOUL - Popular Taiwanese actor Greg Hsu and South Korean A-lister Jung Woo-sung got fans from both camps excited after they appeared in a photo together on social media.

Jung, 49, first posted the photo on Monday, with the caption: “With Greg Hsu”.

Hsu, 31, thanked him under the post, with his comment receiving more than 3,500 likes and attracting more than 240 replies as of Wednesday.

The Taiwanese star posted a similar photo on social media the next day. He wrote: “Thanks, bro. Thanks for the hospitality from the chance encounter.”

Some fans have labelled it a dream pairing of two “male gods” as both stars are known for their good looks.

Hsu, who shot to fame for his leading role in the time-travelling romance Someday Or One Day (2019), is currently in South Korea for a nine-day promotional trip and holding his first fan meet in the country.

Jung, who starred in the critically acclaimed film Innocent Witness (2019), was also recently on a promotional tour, for his new movie Hunt.

Hunt, the feature directorial debut of Squid Game (2021) actor Lee Jung-jae, starred both Lee and Jung and is so far the third highest-grossing South Korean film of 2022.

While both Hsu and Jung did not say how they met, fans speculated that Hsu might have watched Hunt and joined the film’s cast and crew for dinner at a post-screening event.

Hsu was also spotted at a South Korean cafe last week filming a programme with Donghae and Eunhyuk from K-pop boy band Super Junior.

Epic Pictures Group has acquired North American rights to TIFF selection and South Korean action thriller A Man Of Reason ahead of its world premiere in Special Presentations.

Jung Woo-sung makes his directorial debut in the film from Studio Take Co. and stars in the story of a former gang member who tries to live a normal life following 10 years in prison.

After reconnecting with his girlfriend and learning he has a daughter, the man is forced to revert to old ways to protect his daughter when his old boss tries to bring him back into the fold. Rounding out the cast are Kim Nam-gil and Park Sung-woong.

The thriller premieres in Special Presentations on September 14. Jung and Jung Hae-sin co-wrote the screenplay to A Man Of Reason and Song Dae-chan produced.

Jung is known for his breakthrough performance in Beat and went on to earn acclaim his roles in The Good, The Bad, And The Weird, Cold Eyes and Steel Rain. He can also be seen at TIFF in Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae’s The Hunt. Jung recently served as executive producer on the Netflix Original Korean sci-fi series The Silent Sea and reprised his role in Steel Rain for the 2020 sequel.

Epic Pictures Group will release the film theatrically and digitally via Epic Releasing in North America in the first quarter of 2023 following its festival run. The deal was negotiated by Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald and CFO Katie Page with Hana Choi on behalf of Acemaker movieworks.

“Shakespearean in its violence, Jung Woo-Sung’s A Man Of Reason is a modern masterpiece in storytelling that is filled with some of the most adrenaline-inducing and innovative action sequences,” said Ewald. “We are deeply grateful to the team at Acemaker Movieworks and Jung Woo-Sung for allowing us to introduce this amazing thrill ride of a film to North American audiences.”

“We’re thrilled to present Jung’s first — but overwhelming — feature A Man Of Reason to North American audiences, and look forward to the reception from TIFF and further festivals, ” said Choi, international business team leader at Acemaker movieworks. “We are very happy to start our business with Epic Pictures, who have rich experience distributing genre films in the US and Canada, and are sure to provide an excellent platform for Jung’s feature.”

A MAN OF REASON Q&A | TIFF 2022

The team behind A MAN OF REASON in conversation with TIFF in advance of its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. The directorial debut of Korean superstar Jung Woo-sung (The Good, The Bad, The Weird) has everything you crave in a modern thriller: hi-octane action sequences, memorable characters, and Jung himself in the leading role.

The 47th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 8 to 18, 2022. For more, visit http://tiff.net.

The directorial debut of Korean superstar Jung Woo-sung (TIFF ’08’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird) has everything you crave in a modern thriller: hi-octane action sequences, memorable characters, a story that merges the personal and political — and Jung himself in the leading role.  After 10 years of incarceration on behalf of his employer, all Su-hyuk (Jung) wants is a normal life — one he hopes will include his former girlfriend, Min-seo, and their daughter, In-bi. But once you’ve penetrated the upper echelons of the underworld, normal can prove hard to come by. Su-hyuk leaves prison to find he’s been gifted a BMW. Wedged under its wiper blade is a business card for the Kaiser Corporation: sometime in the last decade, his employer adopted an air of legitimacy. These days, the old gang steal and murder in the name of urban development. And they want Su-hyuk on board.  When Su-hyuk declines their offer to rejoin, the Kaiser executives dispatch a pair of psychopathic assassins with a flair  for extravagant gestures. What follows is a tit-for-tat kidnapping drama and  a series of car chases, inventive demolitions, and general mayhem erupting against the backdrop of Seoul’s outskirts, where anonymous luxury high-rises loom  over desolate landscapes.  At the core of A Man of Reason is Jung’s singular charisma. Su-hyuk is simultaneously taciturn and soulful. Unwilling to retaliate until cornered, he’s like a coiled snake. Meanwhile In-bi seems to have inherited some of her father’s instincts for cool-headed self-preservation. While so much in their world seems to be collapsing, that little girl provides some reason for hope.

Jung Woo-sung was born in Seoul. He is an accomplished actor. A Man of Reason (22) is his directorial debut."

A Man of Reason’ Review: Korean Action Star Jung Woo-sung Directs Inert Hitman Thriller

TIFF: One of Korea's premiere action stars goes behind the camera for this disappointing action movie about a hitman released from prison.

“A Man of Reason”
1996-98 AccuSoft Inc., All right

A visually inspiring, dramatically inert action thriller directed by Jung Woo-sung, one of Korea’s premiere action stars (“The Good, the Bad, the Weird”), “A Man of Reason” misunderstands the retired-assassin sub-genre. Rather than spellbinding audiences with a beguiling antihero — one whose malaise teases fear — the film offers a protagonist so dull and unassuming that the film around him often struggles for any reason of its own.

And yet, “A Man of Reason,” grips you in its opening scene. Su-hyuk (Jung) is a slender blade leaning against his black BMW. After ignoring two missed calls from his girlfriend Min-seo, he descends upon the dimly lit hideout of a crime boss. Armed with a flashlight attached to a knife, he proceeds to mow them down. His blade, making the sound of paper cuts in the air, slashes through the men as swiftly as the camera that’s tracking him moves. It’s an enrapturing action sequence in a movie filled with them. But the kinetic, captivating tone disintegrates once the narrative remembers that it needs to tell us about these people.

After serving a 10-year sentence for his murderous escapade, Su-hyuk is released from prison. His old associates, now using the hotel business as a cover for their illegal dealings, wonder what kind of man the time away has turned him into. And Su-hyuk has changed: He wants to care for his young daughter In-Bi and reconnect with his former love Min-seo. He goes to his former boss, now known as the chairman, to ask for a normal life. The chairman’s sniveling underling, Kang, however, doesn’t believe in the assassin’s pursuit for absolution. Kang puts two unhinged, manic killers on Su-hyuk’s tail only for the pair to put the former hitman in a position where he must drop the nice guy act, and defend his family, if he hopes to finally get out of this terrible business.

“A Man of Reason” often resembles Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive.” Similar to Ryan Gosling’s stoic terminator behind a wheel, Su-hyuk doesn’t just cast a shadow as a downbeat guy navigating a world guided by toxic masculinity. He uses his car as a high-octane, fast-torquing weapon: In one rousing scene, Su-hyuk slams into a hotel lobby with his vehicle and spins would-be goons atop of it like a bumper car in a china shop. Jung’s action flick features so many of these precisely wrought confrontations, mixed with endearing action hijinks — this is the kind of movie where a man named the masseuse provides debilitating kicks to the shin — that on paper, like “Drive,” it should be endlessly entertaining and should, in some respects, even transcend the genre.

And make no mistake, Jung’s director isn’t the problem here: He pulls broad yet charged performances from his deep ensemble. The copious closeups and elegant compositions by him and DP Go Rak-sun, set against the blue and violet lighting, provides the requisite drapes to this gritty, intense world. Also, the stunt work and choreography, mixed with clipped editing gives the fight sequences a balletic form that’s become the standard in Korean genre films.

But the script to “A Man of Reason” too often relies on bare-bone archetypes over deeply etched characters. What makes Su-hyuk different from other hitmen? Is the chairman worth trusting? Apart from jealousy, what drives a man like Kang? Without more grounding the bloody, unbending rivalry between Kang and Su-hyuk, meant to propel the film, fizzles. The two, unhinged assassins similarly lack wit as broad pastiches of the Joker-Harley Quinn pairing. The title, of course, hints at these characters’ unreasonableness in the face of a changed, deliberate man, who wants nothing more than to move on. But the spirit of the title doesn’t totally paper over the shortcomings in Su-hyuk as a protagonist.

Su-hyuk hews so closely to the quiet, ruminative, man-in-black stereotype, where the fists do the talking in lieu of a blank stare, that he possesses zero panache. That’s partly because the screenplay forgets to put an aura around him. When you watch movies like “John Wick” or “Kill Bill,” the reputation of the reformed killer always precedes them. “A Man of Reason” side steps that conceit and Su-hyuk is all the more boring for it. Apart from the Chairman, everyone sees him as just a regular guy. Though some bits of fun arise from him being described merely as “a crazy dad,” a familiar humor in the genre, it subtracts from the indelible mythology of the character, rendering him generic.

After a convoluted mission to retrieve his daughter ends in gore, guts and nail gun bullets, the film ends on a whimper. Despite Su-hyuk’s desire, the audience doesn’t want him to be normal any more than his former boss does. “A Man of Reason,” even with its seductive visuals and feverish fight sequences, is too cerebral, too thin where it counts, to be memorable.

HUNT Q&A | TIFF 2022

"The team behind HUNT in conversation with TIFF in advance of its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Korean action star Lee Jung-jae (The Housemaid, Deliver Us from Evil) makes his directorial debut with this 1980s-set thriller, in which he plays an intelligence chief who uncovers a plot to assassinate the president of South Korea while hunting for a mole within his own agency.

The 47th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 8 to 18, 2022. For more, visit http://tiff.net.

Set during a period of peak tensions between North and South Korea in the 1980s, Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae’s directorial debut is an electrifying espionage thriller. Co-starring Lee and Korean star Jung Woo-sung as government agents trying to smoke out a mole, Hunt plunges the viewer into a labyrinth of secrets where nothing is quite what it seems. The result is one of the most impressive action movies in years. Following a failed assassination attempt on South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan, KCIA Foreign Unit chief Park (Lee) and Domestic Unit head Kim (Jung, also at the Festival with his directorial debut,  A Man of Reason) are charged with the task of identifying the conspirators. The men share a fraught history — some years ago, Kim subjected Park to an interrogation that left him with permanent nerve damage — and each suspects the other of being a double agent. While the rivals search for incriminating evidence against each other, their investigation leads them to a shadowy figure, codenamed Donglim, who appears to have infiltrated the agency. Uncovering Donglim’s true identity will keep the men tethered together and set them on a path involving shootouts, car chases, and much bloodshed.  Lee and Jo Seung-hee’s screenplay bal- ances complex political stakes with carefully paced character development and deep intrigue. Crosscutting between the two protagonists in a propulsive relay, Lee and editor Kim Sang-bum bring the story to life in a manner that is relentlessly kinetic, whether through elaborate set pieces or an unnervingly brutal fist fight, keeping us on the edge of our seats — and keeping us wondering whom to trust — until the credits roll and we finally come up for air.

Lee Jung-jae was born in Seoul. He has been an accomplished actor and international film star for almost three decades. Hunt (22) is his directorial debut.

LEE JUNG-JAE & JUNG WOO-SUNG | In Conversation With… | TIFF 2022

"To say that Korean storytellers are having a moment would be a gross understatement. After more than two decades producing some of the most exciting and inventive films and television series of our time, Korean filmmakers, creators, and actors are finally receiving due recognition beyond their home country, with the recent awards-season successes of Parasite (TIFF ’19), Minari (TIFF ’20) and Squid Game. This year, the Festival proudly presents the latest films from two Korean superstars: Jung Woo-sung’s A Man of Reason, and Lee Jung-jae’s Hunt, which stars both Lee and Jung. Since their collaboration on City of the Rising Sun (1999), both have been key players in Korean cinema and TV and have been instrumental in its international success, with Lee starring in such mega-hits as The Thieves (2012), Assassination (2015), and Squid Game (2021), and Jung leading the casts of blockbuster films such as the Festival hit The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008), Cold Eyes (2013), and Steel Rain (2017). Jung Woo-sung is set to return to the small screen after a decade with a new drama series tentatively titled “Tell Me You Love Me” (translated).

Jung takes on the role of a hearing-impaired artist named Cha Jin-woo who is more adept at conveying his emotions through drawings instead of words. The series is a romance story revolving around him and Jung Mo-eun, portrayed by Shin Hyun-been.

Jung last starred in JTBC drama series “Padam Padam” (2011) with Han Ji-min. Although Jung briefly appeared in the last four episodes of SBS drama series “Delayed Justice” in 2020 as a replacement for the role portrayed by Bae Seong-woo, who stepped down from the role due to his alleged drunk driving, this will be the first time for Jung to return to the small screen in a lead role.

Bae is represented by Artist Company, an actor management agency run by Jung and Lee Jung-jae.

Jung recently returned to Korea from the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday with Lee, as Jung's directorial debut “A Man of Reason” and Lee’s directorial debut “Hunt” were invited to screen at the event. Jung also stars as a lead role in Lee’s film.

“Tell Me You Love Me” is adapted from the popular Japanese original drama with the same title, which was aired on local broadcaster TBS in 1995. Producer Kim Yoon-jin behind SBS romantic series “Our Beloved Summer” (2021-22) and writer Kim Min-jung behind KBS’s “Love in the Moonlight” (2016) and Netflix original series “The Sound of Magic” (2022) collaborated for the upcoming series.

According to the series’ production company Studio N, the series will begin filming by the end of this year. The channel and platforms on which the series will be made available has not been undecided as of yet.

The new human romance drama “Tell Me You Love Me” (working title), which is co-produced by Studio&New, a content production subsidiary of NEW (Next Entertainment World), and global multi-content production company Artist Studio, confirmed the casting of actor Jung Woo-sung and actress Shin Hyun-bin and the filming to begin at the end of this year.

“Tell Me You Love Me” is a healing melodrama that tells the fate of Cha Jin-woo, a deaf man who is used to expressing emotions through pictures instead of words, and Jung Mo-eun, who expresses her heart with her voice.

Actor Jung Woo-sung, who is about to make his first return to drama acting in more than a decade since “Padam Padam”, will play Cha Jin-woo, who is free and comfortable in his quiet world and not affected by prejudices. Meanwhile, actress Shin Hyun-bin, will be appearing as Jung Mo-eun, who respects herself as she is and proudly pursues and achieves her dreams and love. Shin Hyun-bin, who received favorable reviews and proved her irreplaceable presence through “Hospital Playlist” TV series and “Reflection of You”, will appear in the upcoming drama “The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate”, which is considered one of the most anticipated works in the second half of this year.

The script of “Tell Me You Love Me” was written by Kim Min-jung, who tells talks about love and empathy across times and genres in dramas, such as “Love in the Moonlight” and Netflix’s original series “The Sound of Magic”. Director Kim Yoon-jin, who was well-received for his amazing directing skills that increased the excitement through each episode in “Our Beloved Summer”, also joined the production of this new drama, raising fans’ expectations.

“Tell Me You Love Me” has drawn keen attention from the planning stage as it is considered an official comeback of actor Jung Woo-sung. The actor, who recently boasted his overwhelming charisma and bold performances through the box office hit “Hunt”, is pioneering his own unique career as an artist and creator as he became the executive producer of the Netflix series “The Silent Sea” and was officially invited to the Special Presentations section at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival with the first feature film he directed “A Man of Reason”. The romance “Tell Me You Love Me”, which Jung Woo-sung selected as his comeback work a decade after the 2012 drama “Padam Padam”, is based on a famous melodrama of the same name that was broadcast on Japanese channel TBS in 1995 and swept various awards, such as Best Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress, at that time.

In addition, the participation of director Kim Yoon-jin, who is expected to capture the emotions of an empathetic romance, is making drama fans look forward to the chemistry that Jung Woo-sung and Shin Hyun-bin will create together. Studio&New and Artist Studio, which are in charge of producing “Tell Me You Love Me”, confirmed that the drama filming would begin in earnest at the end of this year after completing the casting of supporting roles. The broadcasting of the drama on various channels and platforms is still being discussed.

Meanwhile, Studio&New is preparing to introduce Disney+’s original series “Moving, JTBC’s drama “Doctor Cha Jung-sook” led by Um Jung-hwa, movie “Soulmate” starring Kim Da-mi, Jeon So-ni, and Byun Woo-seok, as well as movie “Hidden Face” starring Song Seung-heon, Jo Yeo-jung, and Park Ji-hyun as lead actors. After “Tell Me You Love Me”, the production company will start making writer Lee Dae-il’s new series “Good Boy” and writer Yoon Yi-soo’s directing debut work.

Actor Jung Woo-sung, who serves as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), will visit Poland to meet Ukrainian refugees on Oct. 3, UNHCR's Seoul office said, Wednesday. This will be Jung's eighth trip as a Korean representative for the humanitarian aid agenda.

Since his appointment as UNHCR goodwill ambassador in May 2014, Jung has visited refugees and displaced people in Nepal, South Sudan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Djibouti and Malaysia. Due to border restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, his missions abroad have been halted for three years.

"Although there have been restrictions to visit the field for the last three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was concerned about the growing number of refugees," Jung said in a statement released by the UNHCR. "I hope for this mission to Poland to be an opportunity to increase Koreans' awareness of displaced people and to convey the message that anyone can be forced to flee."

During his visit to Poland, Jung will meet Ukrainian refugees and volunteers at Lublin train station where refugees continue to arrive by train. One of the refugee support centers there is operated by the UNHCR, the group said.

Jung has been a vocal advocate of human rights for refugees and displaced people. In 2018, the actor spoke up for the Yemeni refugees who arrived on Jeju Island seeking refugee status.

In February 2019, he spoke for the refugees at a policy forum at the National Assembly. The actor shared his experiences with meeting refugees and displaced people while expressing concerns for baseless stories about Yemeni refugees that were spreading quickly online and inciting hatred and Islamophobia. He also called for a revision of the Refugee Act.

In 2019 he also published a memoir, titled "If you could see what I have seen," which reflects his journey with the UNHCR since 2014 on Refugee Day, which falls every year on June 20. All of the proceeds from the book's sales are donated to the UNHCR.

According to the UNHCR, more than 13 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their home country and crossed borders to seek asylum. Poland has received more than 1.3 million Ukrainian war refugees, many of whom are women and children, elderly and disabled.

Busan Film Market: Acemaker Serves up Slate of Action and Revenge Titles

Acemaker Movieworks

Multifaceted Korean film company Acemaker Movieworks will unveil four titles at this year’s Asian Contents & Film Market, which operates alongside the Busan International Film Festival. Action and revenge feature prominently as unifying themes.

The COVID pandemic continues to have a delayed impact on the Korean production and film releasing scenes. Last year’s prolonged theatrical drought meant funds for reinvestment were in short supply and releases postponed. Many of Acemaker’s movies were shot in 2020, but are only now confirming completion and new release dates.

“Remember” is an action drama film starring Lee Sung Min (“The Spy Gone North”) and Nam Joo Hyuk (best known for TV series “Start-Up” and “Twenty-Five Twenty-One”). Directed by Lee Il Hyung (“A Violent Prosecutor”), the story revolves around a retired soldier suffering from dementia, seeking revenge from people he believes caused the death of his family. The film is a remake of Atom Egoyan’s Nazi drama thriller of the same name that starred the late Christopher Plummer. “Remember” will have its theatrical release in Korea on Oct. 26, 2022.

Another action drama with a revenge theme is “A Man of Reason,” which premiered last month in the Toronto festival’s Special Presentations section. The story’s protagonist, played by Jung Woo Sung (“Hunt”), was released from prison after 10 years. He seeks to lead an ordinary life, only to find out his daughter was abducted by his former boss, leaving him no choice but resort to violence for revenge. Kim Nam Gil (“Emergency Declaration”) and Kim Jun Han (“Beasts Clawing At Straws”) also star in this directorial debut by Jung.

Fact-based “Firefighters” is set in a Seoul fire station and is a tale of sacrifice. Directed by Kwak Kyung Taek (“The Classified File,” “Friend”), the picture features Kwak Do-won (“Steel Rain 2: Summit”) and Joo Won (“Carter”).

The company is also serving up a crime noir “Dirty Money.” It sees two detectives struggling with their own needs, succumb to temptation when handling a large amount of cash. The picture is the feature directing debut of Kim Min Soo and stars Jung Woo (“Hot Blooded”) and Kim Dae Myeong (“The Drug King”).

Acemaker was founded in 2018 by Jung Hyun-joo, Showbox’s former head of film investment and production, and today spans film investment, production and distribution. It has had a mix of box office hits and festival successes to date. These include action thriller “The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil,” mystery thriller “The Anchor,” crime drama “The Policeman’s Lineage” and romantic comedy “New Year Blues.”

Big Budget ‘Bogota’ Adorns Megabox Plus M’s Busan Sales Slate

By Rebecca Souw | Oct 7, 2022 2:30am PT

“Bogota: City of the Lost,” one of the most expensive Korean films ever made, heads the sales slate presented at Busan by Megabox Plus M, part of Korea’s J Contentree listed company.

Crime noir, “Bogota” took 21 months to produce and saw its principal photography start in January 2020 but soon become a victim of COVID. Song Joong Ki (“Space Sweepers”) stars as a young man moving to Colombia with his family for a better life, but he ends up living from hand to mouth. He later goes against all odds to dominate Bogota’s black market. The picture also stars Lee Hee-jun (“The Drug King”) and was directed by Kim Seong-je (“The Unfair”).

It is also pitching “Don’t Buy The Seller,” a thriller directed by Kim Hee-gon (“Fengshui”) that might make one rethink the purchase of second-hand items via online apps. Shin Hae-sun plays the protagonist who reports the seller of a broken washing machine to the police, only to realize he’s a psychopathic serial killer.

Both titles were launched by the company at the Cannes Market, a reflection of the continuing burden placed on Korean film companies by the pandemic and its damage to the theatrical sector. And neither yet have confirmed Korean release dates.

Of the nine titles it has in the works, six were shot before or during COVID, while just three were filmed this year. “We have presented several older materials from Cannes 2022,” Oh Dabin, deputy manager of international sales at Megabox Plus M, told Variety.

“COVID is not over yet. Although the cinemas in Korea seem to be back in business, we are being extra careful when deciding on the release date,” said Oh.

This year’s works include “Seoul Spring,” a political drama film based on a true event after the assassination of President Park. The attempted coup leads to a conflict between military leaders. A star-studded male cast includes Hwang Jung Min (“Hunt”), Jung Woo Sung (“A Man of Reason”), Lee Sung-min (“The Man Standing Next”), Park Hae-joon (“Emergency Declaration”) and Kim Sung-kyun (“Sinkhole”).

Also on the list are: “Resonance” is a story of two musicians in their heyday until fate drives them apart. Jin Sun-kyu (“Space Sweepers”) and Kim Dong-hee (Netflix series “Extracurricular”); and “Escape,” an action drama film set in a North Korean military camp in which a sergeant planning to escape to the south is stopped by his comrades.
