Paektu Mountain or Baekdu Mountain is an active volcano on the China–North Korea border. At 2,744 m (9,003 ft), it is the highest mountain of the Changbai and Baekdudaegan ranges. Koreans consider the volcano and its caldera lake to be their country's spiritual home. This mountain is called Changbai Mountain in China. It is the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast China.

The modern Korean name of the mountain, Mount Paektu (or Baekdu), was first recorded in the 13th historical record Goryeosa. It means white-head mountain. In other records from the same period, the mountain was also called Taebaek Mountain, which means great-white mountain. The modern name of the mountain in Chinese, Changbai Mountain, comes from modern Manchu name of the mountain, which is Golmin Šanggiyan Alin or Long/Ever White Mountain. Similarly, its Mongolian name is Ondor Tsagaan Aula, the Lofty White Mountain. In English, various authors have used non-standard transliterations.[Wikipedia]

I cannot say I am looking forward to this. A volcanic eruption is not something you prevent, it is something you get away from because there is no way in hell you are going to stop it.

Thank you @rubie for starting this thread.

I will always watch just about anything with Lee Byung Hun and Ha Jung Woo.  So I look forward to this new project.

@Warren Lauzon, of course, I agree with you.  I wonder if there is either a translation error, or else some element(s) about the movie we do not yet know.  (I want to think that is the case...)

This latest update could be one of the backing points for the movie to be made. It's probably not to prevent the eruption from happening, as the last volcanic eruption from Mount Baekdu was in 1903. Likely more of an observation to plan better in case of another eruption happening in the near future, hopefully not. It could be like the 1996 movie Twister, which they were researching of ways to accurately predict a tornado happening in order to quickly warn people to get themselves safe from the unstoppable natural disaster.

But of course, for a 17-million budget, the movie will obviously show an eruption happening despite their planning and the heroes will have to work together to save the day.

South Korea pushes for inter-Korean joint volcano observatory at Mount Paekdu

Source: The Korea Times

South Korea is pushing to set up an inter-Korean joint volcano observatory at Mount Paekdu on the North Korean-Chinese border, officials in Seoul said Friday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration has drawn up a medium- and long-term plan to establish a facility to observe volcanic activities on the mountain, together with North Korea, according to administration officials and Rep. Sol Hoon of the ruling Democratic Party.

The 2,744-meter-high mountain, the highest on the Korean Peninsula and considered a spiritual home of the Korean people, last erupted in 1903, historical records showed.

The plan calls for the two Koreas to establish a joint observation station equipped with devices to detect seismic movements around Paekdu and communications networks, as well as facilities to measure the magnetic field of the earth and analyze volcanic gas, the officials and Sol said.

"Discussions with North Korea have yet to begin, but the joint observatory project will be pushed if the conditions are met," an administration official said.

An eruption of Mount Paekdu is expected to cause immediate damage from pyroclastic flows that contain lava, gravel and stones before triggering secondary damage from the spread of volcanic ash, experts say. (Yonhap)

North’s nuclear test could trigger volcano eruption
Terrestrial stress could cause Mount Paektu to blow, study says

If a North Korean underground nuclear test were to produce an earthquake over a magnitude of 7, the explosion could trigger Mount Paektu, a volcano straddling the border with China, to erupt, according to a new study.

Scientists have grown increasingly concerned that the artificial earthquake that resulted from North Korea’s fourth nuclear test at the Punggye-ri nuclear site, located about 116 kilometers (72 miles) from Mount Paektu, could have directly or indirectly impacted volcanic activity, possibly leading to an eruption.

Mount Paektu, which at 2,744 meters (9,000 feet) is the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula, has not erupted since 1903.

The study is the first to find an exact link between North Korea’s nuclear test and the possibility of a volcanic eruption. The report, conducted by Hong Tae-kyung, a professor in the Department of Earth System Sciences at Yonsei University, and his colleagues, was published Wednesday in the journal Scientific Reports.

Their research examines dynamic stress changes in Paektu’s magma chamber and how hypothetical nuclear explosions carried out by North Korea could induce an eruption.

The research team analyzed North Korea’s first three nuclear tests, conducted in 2006, 2009, and 2013, calculating seismic ground motion and dynamic stress changes. In the study, the team set earthquake magnitudes of 5.0 to 7.6 - the result of nuclear tests conducted by the Soviet Union and the United States, respectively.

“North Korea’s underground nuclear explosions with magnitudes of 5.0 to 7.6 may induce overpressure in the magma chamber by several tens to hundreds of kilopascals,” the study said.

Professor Hong said a magnitude-7.0 underground nuclear explosion by North Korea may produce peak ground accelerations and peak dynamic stress changes around the volcano, indicating Mount Paektu could erupt.

Spoiler

However, he added that North Korean nuclear tests lower than magnitude-7 were also dangerous.

North Korea’s nuclear development capabilities have improved since 2006, when it conducted its first nuclear test at the Punggye-ri nuclear site, which resulted in a magnitude-3.6 earthquake.

The second test carried out in 2009, recorded a magnitude-4.4 earthquake, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration, while the third test in 2013 had a magnitude of 4.8.

The regime claimed its latest nuclear test on Jan. 6 was a hydrogen bomb and violated United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Analysts from other neighboring countries including China and Japan have also warned about a possible eruption in a few years, citing that they have observed abnormal activity and that areas near the volcano have been secreting sulfur dioxide, a volcanic gas.

Temperatures in the nearby hot springs have also continued to rise.

Suzy Bae: Ha Jung Woo Questions Lee Min Ho's Ex's Casting On 'Baekdu Mountain'

By Jonnalyn Cortez Business Times (Photo: Sports Chosun)

2018122501001669600123661.jpg

Ha Jung Woo revealed there would be no "point" if Suzy Bae joined 'Baekdu Mountain' cast.

Earlier reports revealed Suzy Bae was in talks to play the role of Ha Jung Woo's wife in the upcoming movie, "Baekdu Mountain." But while talking about the film, the 40-year-old actor revealed there would be no "point" if the former Miss A member joined the cast.

In an interview for his movie "Take Point," Ha Jung Woo talked about his current and upcoming works for 2019. As the South Korean actor is often lined up to do action films, he was asked if he is also willing to do romance genres.

Ha Jung Woo admitted that he is "extremely interested" to do romance productions, but he often finds himself doing a different genre. "The latest movies these days or the productions I choose are all just the wrong types," he said that left to laughter, per All Kpop.

He also revealed that he had been continuously filming with all men. So as there are rumors that Suzy Bae will play the role of his wife in "Baekdu Mountain," he doubts if they will have a scene. "Even if Suzy were to be cast as the role of my wife, what's the point? We won't meet in the movie," Ha Jung Woo added.

Ha Jung Woo explained all of his scenes in "Baekdu Mountain" would be with Lee Byung Hun, from the beginning until the end. Different scenes in the film will take place in different places. If ever Suzy Bae joins the cast, her role would be left behind in Seoul, and he would be part of the rescue team going to the mountain.

Business Times previously reported Suzy Bae got the offer to play the role of Ha Jung Wife's in the upcoming movie "Baekdu Mountain." However, it has yet to be known if she would accept the role.

Suzy Bae's agency, JYP Entertainment, released a statement to address the news. "Although it is true that she received the offer, it is one of the projects she is reviewing," it said.

"Baekdu Mountain" tells the story of North Korea and South Korea's rescue team members as they brave the volcano's possible eruption. The group will try their best to prevent mass destruction from happening in the two countries.

Ha Jung Woo will play the role of a South Korean agent in "Baekdu Mountain." If ever Suzy Bae accepts the role, she will portray the character of his wife. Other stars that will join the film are Lee Byung Hun as a North Korean agent, Ma Dong Seok as a scientist, and Jeon Hye Jin as a South Korean government official.

Ha Jung-woo Reveals Impressive Line-up for New Movies

Source: Nate via HanCinema.net

photo1049483.jpg

Actor Ha Jung-woo proved his love for his fans by telling them all his plans for his next movie.

Ha Jung-woo met his fans on the 30th of March and talked about his future movie plans and the line-up that was going to be involved.

His next film is of keen interest as it is Ha Jung-woo, a box-office surety that drew 100 million viewers. He's not just an actor, but a filmmaker as well so the release of many of the next lineups, not just one, has attracted public attention as well as industry insiders.

Ha Jung-woo announced his reunion with director Yoon Jong-bin from "Nameless Gangster". He claims he'll be working on a Netflix drama with him.

He mentioned his co-stars of "Boston 1947", director Kang Je-gyu's latest movie about a marathon runner led by the legendary coach Son Ki-jung played by Ha Jung-woo himself. Additional casts to the film are Im Si-wan and Bae Sung-woo.

Ha Jung-woo is working on the film "Mount Baekdu" with Lee Byung-hun, Suzy, and Ma Dong-seok until July, and "Closet" with Kim Nam-gil has confirmed the third week of August for its release. "Kidnapped", a film by Kim Seong-hun cranks in next year in 2020 and he'll be working with Joo Ji-hoon again.

Ha Jung-woo is a multi-tasker from actor to producer and artist and his has more plans for more work in the upcoming future. The scenario for a piece he was going to direct is complete but scheduling has resulted in someone else directing the film and actor Lee Sun-kyun is in his radar for casting.

There are many variables for a film to reach its release date and Ha Jung-woo's statements may not all be 100% accurate. However, it is an interesting fact that Ha Jung-woo, the leading actor of Chungmuro, just announced his year's plans as if making a brand announcement for his fans.
