[Korean Box Office] ‘Frozen 2’ is frozen in the local box office’s top spot: Foreign films dominate standings but new release set to mix it up

“Frozen 2” dominates over the weekend while the rest of the local box office charts were mostly occupied with foreign films. However, the highly-anticipated Korean disaster blockbuster “Ashfall” could knock the animated favorite from the top spot next weekend. [WALT DISNEY COMPANY KOREA]

“Frozen 2” has been dominating the local box office for a month now. Its ticket sales have long surpassed the record set by its first installment, already accumulating over 12 million admissions as of Sunday.

 

The Disney animated series stood firm at the top of the ranks, with over 895,000 audience members seeing the film at over 1,616 screens.

 

Hollywood blockbuster “Jumanji: The Next Level” landed in second place on its first week, selling 601,000 tickets at 1,189 screens. The blockbuster is the second in the Jumanji series and sees four previous cast members reprise their roles as the game’s avatars - Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. In this series however, Johnson and Hart will portray different characters than the first movie.

 

The four friends - Bethany, Fridge, Martha and Spencer - thought they had seen the last of Jumanji when they destroyed the game to prevent anyone else from becoming trapped inside it. However, for some reason, Spencer decided to keep the broken pieces and succeeds in reassembling the game in his grandfather Eddie’s basement. Then, he’s accidentally sucked into it.

 

When the other three find Spencer gone and the game turned on, they decide to play the game to rescue him once more. In the process however, Spencer’s grandfather Eddie and his friend Milo go down to the basement to see what the commotion is about and are forced to play the game as well. Now the three friends must take care of the older duo while also trying to find and rescue Spencer in a more upgraded, deadly game.

 

Foreign films “Ford v Ferrari” and “Knives Out” respectively took the third and fourth spots. The former was seen by 243,000 moviegoers at 786 screens, while the latter was seen by 123,000 moviegoers at 527 screens.

 

Local family film “A Little Princess” warmed the hearts of 68,000 audience members at 584 screens.

 

Along with the predicted popularity of “Frozen 2,” the other top spots were also mostly occupied by foreign films this weekend. But local apocalypse blockbuster “Ashfall” is expected to debut amid high anticipation of local moviegoers, as it features some veteran cast members such as Ha Jung-woo, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Hye-jin and Bae Suzy. The upcoming film’s plot is based on a world which sees the dormant volcano Mount Paektu erupt on the Korean Peninsula.

 

Could “Ashfall” be the movie that finally knocks the animated fan favorite “Frozen 2” off its four-week reign after next weekend?

Volcano Disaster Blockbuster Poised to Take over Box Office

The upcoming disaster blockbuster "Ashfall" is leading the local box office in advance ticket sales.

 

The movie accounted for 34.4 percent of total advance sales as of Tuesday morning, according to the Korean Film Council. It will hit theaters on Thursday.

 

It remains to be seen whether the blockbuster will end the successful run of the animated film "Frozen II" at the box office for the Christmas season. The Disney film has attracted more than 10 million viewers since its release on Nov. 21.

 

"Ashfall" depicts a group of people who try to stop a volcanic eruption of Mt. Baekdu in North Korea.

 

It has been creating a lot of hype thanks to a star-studded cast including Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo and Su-zy.

The movie 'Ashfall' directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-Seo ranked 1st in the advance rate. 

According to the Integrated Promotion Network of the Korea Film Council on 16th, "Ashfall" recorded 26.8% of the market share as of 8:30 am on its first promotion day, landing the first place in the overall pre-screening purchase rates.

 

Ashfall is a film about people who set out to stop the final eruption of Mount Paektu that would destroy both South and North Korea.

 

It is a new movie form the Dexter Studio which produced the series "Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds." It has a star-studded cast which includes Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo, Ma Dong-Seok, Jeon Hye-jin, and Bae Suzy.

 

Meanwhile, "Ashfall" is set to premiere on the 19th of December.

“Ashfall” is to officially meet with Taiwan audience on December 24.  It is also scheduled to be released in Hong Kong on New Year’s Day.  In addition to Taiwan and Hong Kong, “Ashfall” is gaining momentum in other overseas countries and has been sold to 90 countries before its release in Korea.

 

 

“Ashfall” which will be released in South Korea on February 19th, describes an unprecedented disaster in North and South Korea, which is the outbreak of Baekdusan. The movie shows how the elite of North and South Korea will work together to prevent the disaster caused by the last major eruption.. The film was sold before it was officially released in Korea in North America (December 20), France, Germany, Taiwan (December 24), Hong Kong (January 1), Singapore and Malaysia (January 2). , Indonesia (January 8), Thailand (January 9), Philippines, Australia (January 9), Vietnam (January 31), New Zealand, Turkey and more than 90 countries around the world.

Suzy Cheers on Penguin Mascot for Tuna Brand

Suzy has spotlighted an encounter she had with an EBS penguin mascot, Pengsoo, during a promotional event for the upcoming movie "Ashfall". During the event, the special agent penguin gave leading cast members of "Ashfall" cans of tuna, as part of a brand tie-in between the tuna company and "Ashfall".

 

 

Other cast members of "Ashfall" are also present in a picture Suzy uploaded to Instagram. Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo, and Jeon Hye-jin-II are also present and smiling, although Suzy in particular is the main one of the group who appears smitten with the penguin mascot's design. The fifth main cast member of "Ashfall", Ma Dong-seok was not present for the Lotte World Mall event.

 

 

This marks the second unusually high profile appearance of the EBS penguin mascot in unrelated recent news. Last week EBS took down online episodes of a program starring the penguin mascot following a controversy wherein Choi Young-soo was alleged to have physically attacked a fellow cast member during a live broadcast.

CJ announces pre-sales and release dates for action drama 'Ashfall'

South Korea’s CJ Entertainment has announced pre-sales to a slew of territories with partial release dates for upcoming volcano action drama Ashfall, starring Lee Byung-hun and Ha Jung-woo.

 

Co-directed by Lee Hae-jun (Castaway On The Moon) and Kim Byung-suh (Cold Eyes), the film is produced by Dexter Pictures, the company behind the Along With The Gods hit franchise. It also features Don Lee (aka Ma Dong-seok from Train To Busan), Jeon Hye-jin and Bae Suzy.

 

CJ says the film has sold to 90 countries including the US and Germany (Capelight), Taiwan (MovieCloud), Hong Kong (Edko), Singapore and Malaysia (Encore), Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar (Sahamongkol), Australia and New Zealand (JBG Pictures), Indonesia (PT. Graha Layar Mitra), Vietnam (CJ HK), Japan (Twin), France (Metropolitan), the Philippines (Viva), Turkey (Hann) and in-flight (Emphasis).

 

Set for local release December 19, the film is set to open December 20 in the US, December 24 in Taiwan, January 1 in Hong Kong, January 2 in Singapore and Malaysia, January 8 in Indonesia, the day after in Thailand and Australia, and January 31 in Vietnam.

 

The film follows the drama that ensues when Korea’s tallest volcano, Baekdusan, sitting on the China-North Korea border, unexpectedly erupts and the peninsula is left in shambles. Seismologist Bong-rae (Ma) suggests a way that could potentially stop a further explosion and In-chang (Ha) is tasked with seeking out and teaming up with rogue elite North Korean officer Jun-pyeong (Lee Byung-hun) to stop the imminent devastation.

While "Ashfall" already looks to be a strong domestic box office success ahead of its December 19th debut, the star-studded disaster film has already had its rights sold to a large number of foreign countries. Many of them already have confirmed release dates over the next month. The movie opens in the United States on December 20th, and Taiwan on December 24th.

 

 

For next year, "Ashfall" will open in Hong Kong on January 1st, Singapore and Malaysia on January 2nd, Indonesia on January 8th, Indonesia and Australia on January 9th, and Vietnam on January 31st. Steffan Gerlach of Capelight is directing the movie's release in the United States and Germany, and has claimed to have been excited for the movie from the project's very beginning.

 

The head of foreign distribution at CJ ENM has also been positive regarding the blockbuster's cross market appeal, owing to the fresh setting and the extremely strong cast. They're hoping to be able to make even more sales of the film at the Berlin Film Market in February. "Ashfall" is likely the last big hit of the year for CJ ENM, which has already done extremely well at the box office thanks to major hits like "Extreme Job", "Parasite", and "Exit - Movie".

Suzy Explains Why She Took Role In “Ashfall” Despite Short Screen Time

Suzy shared her thoughts on acting in the film “Ashfall.”

 

This action film chronicles the events following a volcano eruption on Mount Baekdu, leading to pandemonium over fear of a final eruption that could wipe out North and South Korea. It tells the story of a team of people who assemble to stop the disaster from happening.

 

On December 18, Suzy attended the press conference for “Ashfall” at the Yongsan CGV I-Park in Seoul.

 

Suzy began, “I had fun reading the scenario, so I really wanted to take part.” The actress doesn’t appear a lot in the film and plays the role of Ha Jung Woo’s onscreen pregnant wife.

 

Speaking about her character, Suzy said, “Ji Young’s screen time might be short, but I don’t focus on the screen time when choosing a project. There was a charm in doing a genre I hadn’t done before.”

 

When asked about Ha Jung Woo’s charming qualities, Suzy answered, “In Chang (Ha Jung Woo’s character)’s playful appearance was charming.”

 

“Ashfall” premieres on December 19.

'Ashfall,' clichéd, Hollywood-style disaster blockbuster

SEOUL, Dec. 19 (Yonhap) -- Mount Paekdu is the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula, located along the North Korea-China border. Its historic eruption in the 10th century, known as the "Millennium Eruption," was one of the most powerful in recorded history, with its ashes flying even to northern Japan.

 

Recently, geologists and volcanologists both at home and abroad have warned of a possible enormous explosion of the 2,744-meter volcano. They say that the unprecedentedly massive eruption could cause a series of earthquakes and tsunamis that could engulf more than half of South Korea.

 

The latest big-budget disaster movie, "Ashfall," which was released on Thursday, dramatizes the realization of the warning with overwhelming scale and a star-studded cast.

 

It starts with breathtaking scenes in which downtown areas of Seoul suddenly turn into ruins due to a huge blast of Mount Paekdu. The experts predict three more explosions to come in a few days, with the last one expected to blow up the entire Korean Peninsula.

 

To prevent another disaster, the Seoul government plans an operation based on a theory by Prof. Kang Bong-rae (Ma Dong-seok), who suggests the pressure of a huge magma chamber beneath the volcano be reduced by using a North Korean nuclear explosive.

Jo In-chang (Ha Jung-woo), the captain of an explosive ordnance disposal team, is assigned to take part in the operation and secretly sent to North Korea. He has to contact Lee Joon-pyeong (Lee Byung-hun), a former North Korean spy who knows the whereabouts of the North Korean nuclear explosive, and carry it to Mount Paekdu no matter the hazards.

 

Despite getting along as poorly as cats and dogs, In-chang and Joon-pyeong team up and start their journey to the northern tip of the peninsula, but they each have something different in mind.

 

"Ashfall," co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, is one of the most anticipated films of 2019 for its production house, Dexter Studios, which is behind the smash hit series "Along With the Gods," and for its all-star cast including Lee, Ha, Ma and singer-turned-actress Bae Suzy.

 

An estimated 26 billion won (US$22.3 million) was reportedly funneled into the production of the Hollywood-style disaster film. Its computer-generated visual effects of the volcanic explosion and urban destruction make the disaster more realistic and valid.

 

Scenes like the first eruption of Mount Paekdu, collapses of skyscrapers in Seoul and car stunt action are so lifelike and intriguing as to keep viewers on the edge of their seats from the beginning of the movie.

 

The film also focuses on the collaboration and friendship of the two officers from the South and North, portrayed by veteran actors Lee and Ha, respectively.

 

Lee, who chose his first silver screen project in almost two years since his last comedy film "Keys to the Heart," proves why he deserves to be one of the most sought-after actors in South Korea for his timeless acting with sophisticated emotions and humor, along with brilliant action scenes.

 

At the same time, Ha's spontaneous performance as a smart but clumsy leader creates good on-screen chemistry with Lee, although it is the first time that the two most bankable male stars in the South Korean film industry have starred in the same film together.

 

 

Filled with all of the tropes and clichés of a disaster film, the storyline is corny and formulaic, resembling a stereotypical Hollywood movie.

 

But its magnificent spectacles of quality visual effects and acting ensemble of big-name stars seem to stand out in the fierce battle for the Christmas season box office against the comedy "Start-up", released on Wednesday, and the historical film "Forbidden Dream" to be released next week.

 

"Ashfall" topped the South Korean box office on Thursday, its opening day, with the number of presale tickets reaching nearly 290,000 as of 1:30 p.m.

[Herald Review] Korea finally has quality disaster film in ‘Ashfall’

South Korean cinema has always been strong on drama, but it has never really managed to produce a decent big-budget disaster film. “Exit” earlier this year was a pleasant surprise, but it was more of an action-comedy hybrid than a disaster film.

“Ashfall” is not a masterpiece by any standard, but directors Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byeong-seo managed to create a decent disaster film that is up to standard in every way, from good acting and character-building to a solid storyline and suspense.

The story takes off when Paektusan, the highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula and a dormant volcano, comes out of its slumber and undergoes the biggest eruption in recorded history. But the authorities soon learn that the worst is yet to come: Geologist Gang Bong-rae (Ma Dong-seok/Don Lee) warns that three more eruptions are due, with the last one certain to incinerate both Koreas.

With North Korea in ruins, South Korean officials send an explosive ordinance disposal operative, Capt. Jo In-chang (Ha Jung-woo), on a covert mission to steal a nuclear warhead from the North to cause an explosion that might neutralize the effects of Paektusan’s devastating final blow. Jo’s team gets help from North Korean spy Lee Jun-pyeong (Lee Byung-hun), but Lee proves to be a liability.

This is the first time I watched a Korean disaster film and felt like it was comparable to one out of Hollywood. Of course, there are innate limitations -- the 26 billion won ($22.2 million) budget is gigantic for a Korean film but ho-hum for Hollywood -- but this is the first film that genuinely seemed big.

I’m not just talking about the scale of the disaster. The first volcanic eruption and the ensuing earthquake gobbling up cars, buildings and roads in Seoul were very reminiscent of the 2009 film “2012,” all the way up to the impossible car chase through the crumbling city. 

In fact, it felt like the directors took a leaf out of Roland Emmerich’s book several times, as seen in the pacing of the film, the suspense-building, the emphasis on family and other aspects. This is not to say the film felt like a cheap knock-off. In fact, this is among the few Korean disaster movies that didn’t feel like one.

I absolutely hated the film “Haeundae,” which despite being one of the biggest hits in Korean box office history was not a well-made film. One of its biggest flaws was the heavy dosage of “sinpa” -- referring to overdramatization and emotionalism in a movie or drama -- which ruined the final act. 

“Ashfall” is everything the 2009 film was supposed to be, depicting a disaster that brings out the personal qualities of the people struggling to stay alive.

The characters were for the most part generic. But the actors’ brilliant performance brought them to life. 

The leading pair absolutely shined with their quirky chemistry. Lee’s character as the unpredictable assassin you had to watch out for was easily the most memorable and enjoyable. He had the skills and the intelligence, and he was ruthless but with a hint of unexpected wit. 

Ha did just as good a job in bringing something unique to a role that was was written as just another rubber-stamp good guy. He could very well have been the most boring character in the film, but Ha’s facial expressions and delivery made each scene feel genuine. 

Honestly, no one else on the special force team leaves much of an impression. But the two leads’ offbeat chemistry was something that turned what could very well have been a sappy bromance into a legitimate bond between two men who understand each other.

Ma’s role was small, but he brought his trademark charm to the part of a lovable nerd, and Jeon Hye-jin as the presidential aide was solid, if not exactly a standout. 

Bae Su-sy’s performance as Capt. Jo’s wife was shaky, as the young actress showed she is not yet able to carry roles that demand depth. But the film was clever enough to hide its weak spots by not really focusing on them.

That was what I liked about this film. In any other Korean disaster film, the relationship between Jo and his wife would have been the main storyline. While it does account for a chunk of the runtime, it does not distract us from the center of attention: the disaster. No convoluted misunderstanding, out-of-nowhere conflict, cheesy lines or painfully idiotic comic relief.

The storytelling is pretty straightforward and obvious. It is a standard disaster film that was pretty fun to watch, but in a country where even that is very scarce, I’d say the directors did a good job.

“Ashfall” opens in local theaters Dec. 19.

ASHFALL Tops Reservations

"Ashfall" looks to top the South Korean box office for its opening weekend, as expected. Before the movie officially started airing on the morning of September 19th, it held 51% of reservations and had already guaranteed over two hundred seventy thousand admissions by that metric alone.

 

However, "Ashfall" has not benefited from the massive overperformance that has accompanied the releases of most major hits this year. The relatively low budget film "Start-Up", for example, had 12.4% of admissions and over sixty thousand guaranteed admissions, while the children's animated movie "The Haunted House: Sky Goblin, The Great Jormungandr" had 9.9% and over fifty thousand guaranteed admissions.

 

"Ashfall" has also lost some ground over the day in the face of poor ratings on the Internet from dissatisfied filmgoers. It also faces stiff competition over Christmas weekend from an upcoming Hollywood musical, a genre which has done exceptionally well at the South Korean box office.

On December 19, Lee Da Hee and Im Soo Jung shared photos on Instagram from their hangout along with Jeon Hye Jin.

 

Referring to her co-star by her character’s name, Lee Da Hee wrote, “Lovely Ta Mi featuring Ddoeung unnie.”

Synopsis
One of the biggest explosions in Korean history happens on the Mountain of Baekdu. The Korean peninsula turns into chaos at the sudden disaster, and additional explosions are expected to engulf both the South and the North.

 

To stop the worst disaster in history, Jeon Yoo-kyeong (Jeon Hye-jin) plans an operation based on the theories of geologist Professor Kang Bong-rae (Ma Dong-seok), who has been studying the Baekdu Mountain explosion, and Special Forces agent Jo In-chang (Ha Jung-woo), who is about to be discharged from duty, and gets put in a secret mission where the fate of the North and South Korea is at stake. In-chang succeeds in making contact with Ri Joon-pyeong (Lee Byung-hun), North Korea's first-class resource in the armed forces holding the key to the operation. However, Joon-pyeong makes things difficult for In-chang with questionable behavior. Meanwhile in Seoul, Choi Ji-yeong (Suzy) struggles to survive the disaster, not knowing that In-chang was on a mission in the North. In the meantime, the final Baekdu Mountain explosion gets closer and closer...!
