[Drama 2019] Romance Is a Bonus Book ♥ 로맨스는 별책부록

Let’s get past the topic of DY’s Daughter. I guess the story focus on the couple and the office. I believe off screen, DY definitely will give her Daughter a call and further more, in this episode, we did saw that she marked her calendar to pay a gift for EH and her Daughter on her payday. She does remember but the writer thinks there’s no point to include a 15 seconds phone call. Ultimately I don’t think DY will tell her daughter about the pressure and stress she face at work.

I do do believe that DY will introduce EH to her Daughter and they might have met each other already. I’m totally in for the writer to put more screen time with EH and DY. They known each other for more than twenty years and finally they got to reciprocate their feelings. This is hard to come by.

im all ready for the rest of the episode with more sweet stuff.

Only one thing I don’t understand about the director GO. Over qualified is a good thing rather than under qualified. Why make a big fuss out of it..........

Thank you writer-nim for the fan service in episodes 11 and 12! @moomooz I agree with you on the screen time of the daughter. This is only a 16-hour drama so they get selective on the scenes they include in every episode, even if it's important in the whole arc but may not be needed in a particular episode. I am enjoying the drama too much and I have faith in writer-nim and PD-nim that I don't want to question anything.

My hopes in the final 4 episodes:

1. Backstory of the book April 23, and what is it all about. (Just throwing out here one backstory I thought of - what if KDJ is CEH's stepfather and JS is the real son which KDJ knew of but never met and April 23 Book is his "love letter" to JS, and CEH knows about KDJ having a son, but doesn't know who, and kept it as a secret, wild!)

2. KDY "I LOVE YOU" confession. Can you imagine what kind of reaction we will get from CEH when that finally happens? Or how red he will get?

3. More SJ and HR interactions, please! Though it seems like HR will get another rejection (friendship rejection this time) but knowing her, she will not take NO for an answer.

4. Ms Go to finally acknowledge that she needs friends like Ms Seo and KDY in her life. You can see in Ms Go's demeanor that she's very torn in terminating KDY's contract because she recognizes her accomplishments.

I am in Australia by the way. We have people who change careers here all the time. So inexperienced people have applied for jobs they are not qualified for and just work. However @enigmatic_zephy you seem to believe really strongly on this subject so. I am happy to read it. Since we have to do a cover letter when it comes to job application its a bit hard to hide relevant work experience. As we have to address the job criterias. Besides we all need post grad qualification on top of it.

Its not that i believe strongly on this, i just don't like people making Ko a scapegoat for everything. She is not  a bad character. No one in this drama is. She stands for something in the drama which is often overlooked and plastered with a lot of namecalling.

And on the other bit, you scared me.. so you mean jobs are scarce in Australia

On resume, i don't get the logic. "Over fitment" is a real thing. Many companies do a pscyhological tests too/ leadership tests and have a range of score that they target, above or below once gets rejected.

So, I don't see how in legal parlance, this can ever be construed as "right". you can always highlight why you are fit for the job including cover letter as you said. But, this is nothing less than hiding true facts.

Does anyone know the title and singer of one of the song that plays throughout episodes — piano and girl singing “you’re beautiful...” song esp during sad parts (like when one of the writer dies)

Guys I am so glad you have brought up DY clothes!

When she was changing for her date outfits, I was completely gobsmacked at what she had in her wardrobe!

Someone call the fashion police because DY should be arrested for some of these articles of clothing she has!

I get this outfit for staying at home. It's cute and looks super comfy!

tmFe2cP.jpg

But for a date WHY ON EARTH WOULD SHE EVEN FATHOM WEARING THIS?

1SRDvvW.png

Is this what you call high fashion? God bless! NEXT!

YDLOO0O.png

Her actual date outfit! The top and bottom DON'T EVEN MATCH!

Spoiler

ZOU34XF.png

I think the only outfit that I loved from her was when there was a flashback of EH and DY at the bar!

Can we get KYS to help our girl out, because I love her outfits! It exudes elegance and beauty!

Also on a side note:

I don't think it's wrong to omit your qualifications for a job. I'm pretty sure a resume is job specific - it should contain all the details necessary to get the job. And if DY position only requires a high school graduate qualification, then is it wrong for DY to omit her university degrees and marketing experience?

No. I'm pretty sure some companies would not hire people they deemed overqualified because they believe someone who has achieved a high level of qualification in a field should be working in that position, rather than a low level position that differs from their degree.

I have to give a monent. Reflect. Recover. From that god- awful what the heck trenchcoat he almost wore for the date. What was THAT?

His final ensemble is much nicer.

@enigmatic_zephy I better end this topic? Jobs are not scarce in Australia. Although there is a certain unemployment rate. However certain jobs are scarce in my state since I am not in Victoria or NSW where the population is larger. I have a friend who did a double degree but had to do a 3rd in accountancy to get a job to stay in the state. There are a lot of Korean migrants here who cannot find work in their chosen profession/degree when they migrated. Also this friend is probably too qualified for the jobs available?  I have a cousin who has an American MBA when she migrated but was working in a bank call centre. And my field is specialised anyway so we tend to know everyone. So it depends on what kind of job you're talking about.

Talking about CEH's job or his field I wonder how well paid it is. I keep looking at his house. Is that his whole house? That big building? Even SJ has a  room apartment as a graphic designer. As far as I know graphic designing is not like the best paid job.

I still like this drama a lot don't mistake  my comments. I like the flow and I like all the books.

I just can't work out if Bong and Seo are being set up to be together or not. And the CEO with So or not. I don't need them to be together its just that the writer is setting them up.

However Song Haerin has and continues to be so totally likeable. The last time I like a 2nd lead female that much was in Protect the boss. I still occasionally watch her scenes whenever I want so fuzzy moments.

Talking about the ttteokbukki here. The one he cooked at home. I know everyone just passed over the moment however I remembered being impressed by how professionally glazed it looked. It was a deep vermilion colour. Not soggy looking and just so glazed looking, glistening madly. Each individual rice cyclinder looking separated. Wow. Who has ever seen a tteokbukki looking like that? Guess you guys guessed by now I am a foodie. Ane totally into gourmet food and nice presentation.

I wonder what certain unemployment rate is - every country has one.. so i assume you mean it is non alarming..

I have to say that Ms. Go irritates me. Although she heard from her acquaintance that KDY was struggling to find a job after remaining for many years as housewife and CEH even told her the same, she suspects from KDY  an ulterior motive. She heard from KDY herself what happened to her marriage. Yet Ms. Go shows no empathy. No wonder that she is not able to have true friends, she lacks compassion. She is all about credentials... how good she is at her job. Notice that she bragged with her fake friends about her wealth and career... because she didn't want to appear inferior to them. She acts exactly like the acquaintance from that other company. Indeed, it looks to me like she feels threatened by KDY. When Ms. Go used the idea that was similar to KDY's work, she could have mentioned that KDY had a similar idea to the others. She never did and she didn't compliment KDY. On the other hand, she tried to put KDY in her place, let her know what was her real job... it was as if she wanted to tell her: don't dream too high!

Honestly, Go is not different from KDY: she is also a liar... telling her ex-fiance that she was married! I hope, the writer won't put her with the CEO together. I want her to learn her lesson at some point too. So far, she hasn't.

@xXMzSmilesXxHahaha... I was thinking exactly that about her date outfit. I thought what she was wearing before was nicer than what she changed into!

As regards this issue of qualification omission — it’s not unethical to do so. She underdeclared but she also accepted a correspondingly lower pay for it. There is also nothing illegal about it. It is not a realm covered under the law since she did not commit fraud, which would be if she falsified a qualification she actually didn’t have. She *is* a high school graduate. However, organisation to organisation, they will have to decide if this is what they want in an employee. I actually think if the CEO was told of the circumstances, he would keep her. As Eun-Ho pointed out, Dan-I has not been incompetent in her work. I feel it’s simly Ms Go who is being small-minded. If that other recruiter is her Friend, it is likely they share the same “value”, that if as women they have worked hard to come into their career the “hard way”,  then Dan-I entering the company in what appears to be in the hopes of landing a marketing job instead does not seem “fair” in their books. And I guess that’s the issue — if she had kept to her work, that would have been fine. But it does look like she was trying to land a marketing job in a roundabout manner. It’s really whether the company CEO sees the value in her. But he’s clearly been bypassed.

@bebebisous33 Definitely agree that Mrs Go/KYS was pretty annoying in this episode. I have been really liking Mrs Go because of the potential of goodness I see in her. However, her work ethics are stern and I felt that she thought DY was trying to get into the marketing position through the task support role. She's a walking hypocrite who really needs to let down her guard down more.

And even though you don't want her and the CEO to hook up; the scenes between them have suggested they will form a couple. Because the CEO has everything she desires - a good man who understands her passion for her career and children!

@gilaswan  I actually disagree with you on the part about "But it does look like she was trying to land a marketing job in a roundabout manner." In fact I think she chose to role to have some sort of footing back into the working force. And her involvement with the marketing aspects of the company is completely by her own desire to help her co-workers and learn more on the job. Everyone except Mrs Go seems to be aiding growth in her understanding of the publishing field and the current marketing strategies.

I don't think she has a specific ulterior motive to land a marketing job at the publishing firm. Also I don't think the CEO would directly give her a marketing job due to the conversation between him and EH at the restaurant. He made it clear that if employees wish to move into certain roles, they need to apply for it and prove their own capabilities, which I actually deem fair.

@xXMzSmilesXx I am well aware that the writer is putting Ms. Go with the CEO but I don't like it very much. It would be great if this "couple" has more an open ending. In real life, some remain single forever... Not everyone ends up with a partner. Just like manager Seo doesn't return to her ex-husband. I hope, it doesn't change. It was really upsetting that he wanted his wife back due to their son. He never replied to his ex-wife's question: "Do you love me, Ji Heong?" So when he overlooked this question ("this is not important"), it showed that he had indeed stopped loving her. He just wanted her back for their son's sake, for his own comfort... He had never understood her reason for the divorce. He only thought that she had acted out of anger. When he said that he would be a better husband, he was missing the point again in my opinion.

Honestly, I wished, Ms. Go would suffer much more. Yes, she is lonely but she does look down on others. She doesn't value human relationships, her whole world is focused on her work. She bragged in front of the CEO about her skills (how she was able to find a writer aso...), on the other hand she is not able to give compliments to others. I had defended her more before, even tried to assume that she wanted to push KDY into the right direction, however her conversation with CEH showed only stubbornness and narrow-mindedness.

I think the issue I have with Ms Ko is that she is self-righteous. For all the failings she’s had or experienced, there is no sense of true remorse, regret, or even hindsight lessons in life that have been learned. Each time, we only see or know of her imperfections when she is caught with her pants down, so to speak. She’s otherwise very guarded, but her guardedness is fueled by arrogance, a self-justification to herself that despite all, she has done no wrong, made no mistake. She can’t see the log in her own eye. And that is what is annoying about her.

And speaking of annoying characters, I have to admit I’m also getting annoyed with the way Kang Dani’s character is being written. If she is mature and motherly, that does not follow through in her interactions with Eunho. It’s like with him, there is no sense she is a mother, or that she struggles with being a divorcee while searching for her new self sans husband (unlike with Ms Seo). Her character is suddenly coming across as being very 2D - she’s either this or that and not more. The complexities that is her which was introduced early in the show seem to be no more. Like some of you have mentioned - where’s that daughter? Where’s that fighting spirit (looks like she’s going to lose that job without trying hard to save it)? And what is she really bringing into the relationship with Eunho? She so very suddenly gave up on Ji Seojun. And so suddenly thought of the outing with Eunho as a date. There’s a lot of disconnect going on for me. I’m finding the development of the other supporting characters a lot more thought through than that of Kang Dani.

A very good analysis about Ms. Ko. The mixture of arrogance, self-centerness and lack of empathy makes it hard to like her. To me, she hasn't shown any growth from the beginning. I thought, after she had confided to DY and Seo, she would open up and change, but she hasn't really.

A few thoughts, Book Chingus!

I really like KDY's growth in this drama. I like that although she actually hit rock bottom, she dusted herself off and got right back up and kept plugging at it until she found work.

The love lines...

I am glad that SHR spoke to CEH about her crush and how she is trying to move on. However, I was embarrassed for her at the book event. Her parents treated CEH as though he OWED SHR his feelings and had betrayed her. Then they practically threw themselves on JSJ. SHR has a great work ethic and accountability, but she is a bit daft when it comes to romance. She and CEH don't fit at all. I thought the scene where she realized he has feelings for KDY and got drunk was very telling. This is what, the third time he has to babysit her after being drunk and she wonders why he only looks at her like a dongsaeng.

I loved the scene with Ms. Seo and Mr. Bong at the hospital. Yes, it was an imposition for her son to get sick on the day of the book event, but that can't be used as leverage to reconcile when they had a multitude of problems when they were married. I got the feeling a reconciliation could've happened if he had approached her earlier. Now, some time has passed and she is getting used to not being with him. In typical fashion, he did not fight for them.

The work situation. I am not ashamed to admit that I have done what KDY has done. I moved to MI some years ago for school, and was looking for a job at the time, and no one would hire me because they felt I was over-qualified for most jobs. So yes, I dumbed down my resume to try and find work. I was told by a recruiter that it wasn't illegal because it is up to the interviewer to muddle through and find out the essentials for the job. For example, often on interviews, they will look at your resume and say, "I see you went to Jane Doe HS? You answer, yes. Then they will follow up with, did you go to college or a trade school?" People exaggerate on resume's so most employers want to get right to the facts.

In KDY's case, she left out her college education and experience, but what does that have to do with how well she is doing her job? And, it is a contract position. I don't think she should be fired, but I do feel like instead, they should pull her aside and inform her that they know she left out some details on her resume. Due to this, the contract will not be renewed and she will have to wait at least 6 months to a year before she can apply for a full-time permanent position. The unfair part is that so far, she has been a model employee. Unlike the other new hires, she has done her job diligently,  often performing multiple tasks at once. She is always in good spirits and gets along with everyone. She stepped up and came up with a great marketing campaign for the new author who was nervous about his book coming out, even convincing him to actually go through with it when he wanted to give up. She also stepped in when Ms. Seo was out with her son. They won't find someone else like her.

Ms. Go sees a peer who, unlike her has the courage to do things that she didn't. Yes, she was a runaway bride for a minute, but she did get married, have a child and that was her life for a while, even though it didn't work out. She bounced back, found work, and even has two men vying for her affection. KDY was someone who was legendary in her field, and that too presents a problem for Ms. Go, who ONLY has her job to cleave to. She doesn't have a family or friends to share her mind and interest with. Thus, her job is a sensitive issue for her. From day one, she felt threatened by KDY. Her friend who managed to remember an interviewee from months ago with amazing clarity, also felt threatened, which is why she remembered her.

I hope KDY doesn't let this get her down. She is smart, hardworking and brilliant. She just needs a chance.

When Eun-Ho tried that classic seat belt trick that's ever so popular in most K-Dramas, I was reminded of the hilarious scene Lee Jong-Suk had in his other previous drama with Suzy:lol:

I don't think it was smart for Seo-Joon:rolleyes: to pick the same passcode for both the door to his home AND the secret room<_<

By the way, what's in that secret room anyway? It's not like a room where he does kinky stuff is it LoL?:phew: Like Christian Grey's Red Room?:w00t:

I'm not as bothered by absence of Dan-I's daughter, maybe it's 'cause I just watch and not expect much eheheh. As for the lying on resume, it's only a crime when the person who applied for the job was incompetent or faked her qualifications. That's just my take on it though (shrugs) But Dan-I on the other is diligent, willing to learn and most importantly, a team player. So for those reasons alone, she should get leeway..at least.

Some epilogue text translations from the end of ep 12.

EH in epilogue 1 text:

D0vQkKLU0AUEW9V.jpg
Actually, I had wanted to use fancier methods.
Making the confession that I had held back for so long, as well as asking her out for the first date.
However, Kang Dan Yi always lightens my expectations.
So even just saying that we should eat a meal outside
becomes an event that makes me flutter.

note: What he’s trying to say is that he imagines these grand gestures, but when he faces DY, he can’t focus on those, and he ultimately ends up just blurting out something simple because he’s so nervous about it. It’s a cute sentiment.

DY in epilogue 2 text:

D0vQkKMVAAAU4QU.jpg
How was I able to hold hands with Eun Ho for all this time?
How was I able to walk shoulder to shoulder with Eun Ho, and laugh as if it was nothing?
When even just meeting glances makes me shiver like this.
When I like him so much that it’s hard to even take a breath.

DY and EH in epilogue 3 text:

D0vQkKRU0AIV_rF.jpg
“Because you’re beside me, it’s a relief!”
Between us, are there any words that are more passionate than that?
In the time that has already passed, and in this time now,
And in the time that is left to live,
The fact that we are going to be by each others sides.
That fact makes me live in constant fluttering.

DY in epilogue 4 text:

D0xw9nnVAAAXhcR.jpg
That there is someone who will always call my name.
That there is someone who when I call out his name will turn around and smile at me.
That simple and plain thing is actually a difficult thing to have, I know that well.
That such a miraculous thing is next to me is fantastic.

From the last epilogue text when they’re holding hands:

D0xw_KnUcAAp8YC.jpg
That night, we kept holding hands and walking.
We shared a goldfish bun with one hand even though it was very uncomfortable.
As if we had only just found the puzzle piece that we had been looking for so long,
As if we had never been apart from the beginning and were one body.
It was an ordinary, and yet romantic, night.

I have not read all of the comments concerning Dan-I and her daughter or about Ms. Go; however, I have a take on the two topics,  I hope I am not wasting anyone's time by repeating what has already been discussed.

Dan-Yi's daughter

Dan-Yi daughter is away at school, however, we do not know the circumstances of her being away.  We do not know if the daughter won a scholarship to this school or someone sponsored her.  Since Dan-Yi was homeless, it was the best decision for her daughter to go away and not have to face homelessness also.

Dan-Yi spoke to her daughter once when she was having a hard time  Dan-Yi also mentioned that she wanted to excel in at work because she wanted to be a role model to her daughter.  Since Dan-Yi's family is not the focus of this drama, I did not expect the daughter to be featured prominently or become a major plot line.  Until the last episode, we did not know that Ms, Seo had a child.  One of the points made in this drama is that hard to be a working mother because the prevailing attitude about career women.

Ms. Go

Ms. Go has been down on Dan-Yi from the beginning.  Before she knew that Dan-Yi was married; it was as if she looked down on Dan-Yi for not having a college degree, but wanting excel become an integral part of the publishing house.   Ms. Go made Dan-i do menial tasks as if to say, stay in your place, do not overreach, do not think you can become anything more than being a gopher because you did not make the sacrifices (college, not getting married.) as I did.  Now that she knows that Dan-i has a college background and has won awards, she feels threatened, because, although Dan-i did not reveal her background, she has already brought many new ideas to the table and they've been successful.  Dan-Yi did not reveal her entire educational and professional background because she had already experienced the difficulty of returning to the workplace with her credentials,  therefore, she chose to only list her high school diploma.  The object was to get a job.  Once she got her foot in the door, her plan was to work hard, contribute, become essential to the company  and perhaps they will retain her permanently.

In the real world, it is hard for a woman, after being out of the workforce for a period of time to return especially to a position comparable to the one she left.  If a woman chooses to stay home with her children until they get older she is less less likely to reach her professional potential. Many employers want to see a continuous work history, not realizing that stay at home mothers have so much to offer.  It is unfortunate that one of the most important tasks mothers can do, (be a housewife) is under valued.

Yes, we have the budding, sweet romance, :D but this drama also highlights other issues.  There is Ji Yool, a young woman who, until recently, only looked at her position as something she had to do until she found a husband to take care of her.  Then there is her mother always forcing blind dates on her, reinforcing the opinion that finding a husband is the most important thing she can do.  Her mother has not encouraged Ji-Yool to become successful in the working world because success for a woman is landing a good husband.  Ms. Seo, who was married (now divorced); however, many did not know that she was married and who she was married to.  When her son became sick, she felt as if she could not say, I cannot make it today because my son is sick, she had to say that she was in an accident.  I think all these story lines are a commentary on women in the work place.  In the workplace a woman has to be a b*&!h, hard nosed, can't show any weakness, such as having to take off for a sick child, send their child away, or not getting married in order to succeed.

Overall, I love this drama and the budding romance between Eun Ho and Dan-Yi...It makes me smile and my heart sing.
