Zhu Yi Long:  "Do Not Set Limits To Yourself"

An interview with the Magazine - "Children Of China" in May 2020 - the year of the onslaught of Covid 19.

 

 

"Children of China": At the beginning of the new year (2020), the new crown pneumonia epidemic has affected the hearts of people all over the country. As a Wuhan native, what have you experienced in your heart during this time? Is there anything you want to say to the people in your hometown?

Zhu Yi Long: At the beginning, I thought it might not be that serious. After a few days, the development of the whole situation was beyond my imagination. In order to quickly stop the spread of the epidemic, Wuhan launched an emergency city closure.

 

At that time, I was very disturbed and nervous, and I called my relatives and friends one by one, knowing that they were all quarantined at home. During this period of time, touching stories are happening every day in Wuhan. Love and hope are spreading faster and more powerfully than the spread of the virus. With the joint efforts of the people of the whole country, everything is getting better now.

I want to say to my hometown people, be patient and persevere, spring has come, I believe we will win this battle soon.

 

"Children of China":  You donated money and materials as soon as the epidemic broke out.  Your fans "Xiaolongbao" also contributed to the prevention and control of the epidemic.   To them, what do you want to say ?

Zhu Yi Long:  At such a special moment, the "Xiaolongbao" did a very good job.  They are very powerful.  And they are all very caring people.  I really think it is great.

 

"Children of China": From your debut to the present, you have participated in many public welfare projects. How did you choose them?

Zhu Yi Long:   If it can move me, I think it can be done.  And if it is urgently needed for me to do it. If I can participate in a public welfare project, I think it will be more meaningful than just shouting a slogan and asking everyone to donate. So I am still willing to try my best to empathize.

This year, I participated in some wildlife protection work. I went to Africa to track black rhinos in the wild.  I also went to Chengdu to record the whereabouts of giant pandas on the mountains. At the same time, I also showed this process to everyone. I hope everyone can pass this on. The project aims to learn more about these lovely animals and to think about the relationship between man and nature.

I also went to the Children's Hospital to contact autistic children. After contacting them, you will find that they live in another world completely. They are different from us, and their communication methods are not on the same frequency as ours. But their spiritual world is actually very rich. They can live independently.  But they just need training and a lot of patience and companionship. Our help can actually change their lives to a great extent.

 

"Children Of China": After so many years of work, what is your understanding of public welfare?

Zhu Yi Long: I think one of the changes that public welfare has made to me is that I don’t feel that public welfare is far away from everyone. In fact, there are many things around you that you can do. Even if you don’t use disposable tableware when you go out, bring your own water cup and use less plastic bags at ordinary times.  Try to choose a green way of travel. These small things are actually acts of public welfare.   These behaviors seem to be protecting the environment and wild animals.  But we are actually protecting ourselves.

 

"Children of China": A series of your works have been loved by the audience, and your acting skills are well recognised. Do you consider yourself a gifted actor?

Zhu Yi Long: I do not think I'm talented. Although others say that you have been acting for ten years, I really do not feel that old. There is still a long way to go as an actor.  So I will walk slowly.

 

 

"Children of China":  What is the most attractive part of the performance?

Zhu Yi Long: I think acting is not something one person does. The beauty of acting is also that it has a lot of uncertainty. The reaction given to you by the opponent on the scene.  The suggestion given to you by the director.  And sometimes the cameraman will also give you some feedback. You combine all these things, and then use yourself as the carrier to knead them together. Using what you think is the most appropriate and accurate way to express it.

 

"Children of China": For the performance, is there a very important work or a very important moment?

Zhu Yi Long: I also thought about this question before.  But acting has gone through a lot of repetitions for me. Maybe I acted in a scene today, and I suddenly felt, ah, I found this character. I am now studying the state of the characters, and I think it is right. But when it came to the second scene in the afternoon, I suddenly could not find this character again. Been going through this over and over again. It was not that one time or one scene, I suddenly felt that I could act.  It was not like that for me. In the process of filming this scene every day, I am constantly searching, communicating with myself and the characters.

When it comes to acting, I have also undergone a shift in thinking.  I used to focus too much on the so-called acting skills.  But later I felt that it was a kind of restraint for myself.  Since you have the opportunity to act and live in that environment, why do you not relax and understand the text ?  Understand what it conveys, and try to experience his life once.  Relax yourself and don't be too demanding on the performance.  Or all the skills and rhythms.  Let go of the rules and regulations in your mind when performing.   And let yourself becomes "He".

In this kind of performance, I think even if there are some glitches in the so-called acting skills, the characters are rooted.  And they will be more vivid on the contrary.  Of course, it is hard.  But I have seen a lot of great actors do it.  So that is what I am trying to do.

 

"Children of China": When you feel that you have mastered the acting skills, you let go of them and look for a real performance state. Will you feel like a newcomer again?

Zhu Yi Long: Yes. We just keep repeating, learning, discarding, learning again, discarding again, and back and forth in the process of ten years. Looking back, I still enjoyed that process, and it made me understand myself better.

In fact, actors are constantly shaping characters.  And at the same time, they are constantly understanding themselves and digging into their own hearts:

- what potential characters or ideas do you have ?

- how do you understand something ?

It is a process of self-awareness. Every actor has his own preferences.  There is nothing high or low or wrong.  As long as the audience accepts and approves your choices, and likes your performance, I think it is successful.  Because performances are very diverse.

"Children of China":  When cooperating with the director, if you have your own ideas, will you stick to these ideas?

Zhu Yi Long: There are times when I disagree with the director. Normally, I will choose to adopt the director's opinion. Since you choose to act in this movie, you have to trust the director. If the director is very determined to tell me what is wrong after watching it, even if I insist, I will try it in his way. Because he sits in front of the monitor.  He sees the most intuitively.  If he is uncomfortable, the words must represent the feelings of a part of the audience, which is problematic.

"Children of China": Many people commented on you that you are not afraid of hardship when filming. Where does the character of not being afraid of hardship come from?

Zhu Yi Long: I think I like it. Anything as long as you like it, it becomes your ideal, your life. All these so-called efforts may not exist anymore. You do not feel like saying: I want to work hard. Because this process is natural.  And because you like this thing, you are willing to spend more time and everything for it.   And you will not feel that you are suffering.

I do not think I have tried very hard.  And I am still far behind.  If conditions permit, I also hope to pay more for a scene and a role.  Now because of various reasons, such as investment and progress, we sometimes film too quickly.  The longer you can experience a character, the better it will be.

 

"Children of China": Which role is the most satisfying so far?

Zhu Yi Long: Not yet.  Because not only the role, but also the ideal performance state.  I think it has not been achieved yet.

"Children of China": Is there any work or role that you want to try now?

Zhu Yi Long: There are still too many roles that I have not acted.  And there are still many I want to try.  With different styles and different types. I do not want to set a limit for myself.  Or make the audience think that I can only play one type of role. If everyone has a fixed impression of me, that is my problem. I want to show more different sides for everyone to see.

 

 

"Children of China": Outside of work, what hobbies do you have?

Zhu Yi Long: There are too many.  But I am not good at it. There are also many sports. I used to play ball.  But now I like diving. When you are in the ocean, everything around you is quiet.  Everything slows down.  Everything is magnified and clear.  And you feel free from a little bit of gravity.

 

"Children of China": As the idol of many young people, how do you view your own influence?

Zhu Yi Long: My goal is to be a good actor, not to be a star. Being a star is too difficult (laughs). Of course, star and idol are not bad words for me.

In fact, all industries are the same. Everyone starts from applying for a job, entering a job, and slowly learning and progressing from a newcomer, step by step. There is no difference between actors.  And they are also slowly doing a good job in completing the work of art. But this profession will be seen and known by everyone. Everyone knows you and likes you. This is also a kind of recognition for you.  So I think it is very good.

 

Whether it's an actor or an idol, I think we must first do our job well.  Keep bringing good works to everyone.  And then pass on some positive energy to everyone. I hope to live happily and happily with everyone, accompanied by good works.

"Children of China": Along the way, is there anyone you want to thank? Is there anything you want to say to yourself?

Zhu Yi Long:  There are really many people who I want to thank.  There are many people who have helped me along the way.  At various points, whether it is career or life construction.  There are many people who have helped me.  What I want to say to myself is :

"Calm down.  Live a good life.  And face the world well"

Zhu Yi Long:    Is A Good Friend

Even though he is still on vacation, he did not forget to send two big  Flower-Stands to support his good friend and co-star (fatty) of "Reunion: The Sound Of Providence",  actor Chen Ming Hao. 

 

The two cards on his Flower-Stands say:  "All The Best For Your New Theatre Production - "The Seventh Day". (It was directed by Meng Jing Hui). 

 

The drama "The Seventh Day" was adapted from Yu Hua's novel of the same name.  It was staged at Beijing Poly Theatre from 15 - 18 March at 19:30 every night.  March 19 at 14:30 pm

Zhu Yi Long :  His "Ups & Downs"

 

I search so hard before I found the "GIF" below.  It shows Zhu Yi Long in his First Official Filming - "Confucius".  He was welcoming Chow Yun Fatt at the City-Gate.

Although he was a character with only one line, his opponent was Chow Yun Fatt.   So a young Zhu Yi Long naturally felt intimidated.

 

He has memorized his lines fluently.  But during the official filming, Zhu Yi Long kept getting stuck because he was too nervous.

 

At that time, Zhu Yi Long's first thought was "It's over, I have to be on the 'industry blacklist' in the future".

 

But the director Hu Mei did not kick him out.  But kept encouraging him.  Finally Zhu Yi Long took 13 shots before passing.

 

Even after becoming famous, Zhu Yi Long's meekness and hesitation still seemed out of place in this industry.

 

At that time, after interviewing Zhu Yi Long, a reporter wrote in the report: "His expression management is very good.  He rarely has exaggerated expressions and movements.  And he hardly sees too many things with strong personality. Gives a 'starless' vibe..."

However, with Fame came the "Black News" that he has a Hidden Marriage and Child.

 

On the night of Weibo in 2019, Zhu Yi Long acquiesced that he was Single.  And as the only single person on stage, he accepted the blessings of married male stars.

However, four years after his Explosion from "Guardian", many of the hottest names in the past have disappeared. But Bai Yu and Zhu Yi Long, the two idols who had no age advantage at the beginning, have settled down and embarked on the long-term road to become powerful actors.   After all, only the works  can stay and stand the test of times.

 

Haruki Murakami wrote in "Kafka on the Shore" that when the storm passes, you will not remember how you got through it.  You are not even sure whether the storm is really over.   But one thing is certain: "You are no longer the same as the man who went into the storm".

Zhu Yi Long:   The 16th Asian Film Festival

 

This was held on 12 March, 2023.  It is sad that the mainland stars have been "discriminated" by Hong Kong and Taiwan entertainment circles

 

China submitted  only two shortlisted works:

a)  "A Thousand Miles Homecoming" (Male Lead: Zhang Yi) and

b)  "Lighting Up The Stars"  (Male Lead: Zhu Yi Long) 

 

 

 

However, in the nominations for actor and queen announced this time, there are no names of mainland artists. Most of the shortlisted works are Hong Kong local films, and their popularity in the mainland is limited. There are some newcomers among the shortlisted artists. Emphasis is on local Hong Kong films.   Not on Quality or Popularity.

 

 

Even on the red carpet the Hong Kong Host and Circle does not pay due respect and attention to mainland stars.

 

When it comes to the Best Actor Award, Tony Leung defeated Zhang Yi with "When the Wind Rises Again" - a "mediocre work" with a score of 6.3 and a box office of only 47 million.

 

The best film goes to "Drive My Car" - a Japanese Movie.  I have not even heard of this Movie.   Has any of you seen this film? 

 

Does it means that Mainland China's Film awards are Not Valid?  That the Best Actor in China is not even worth a Shortlist?  Funny isn't it ?

 

The British has indeed succeeded in "Dividing" the nation - forever.

Zhu Yi Long :  "Lighting Up The Stars"

 

The 2022 Weibo Entertainment White Paper Was Released.

 

Actor Zhu Yi Long left his message to the industry:

"Thank you for everything that happened in 2022. In 2023, I hope I can keep the desire for the role, to absorb nutrients from life, to be able to show the depth of the characters, and continue to work hard to bring good works to the audience. I also wish Chinese movies better and better!"

 

Along the way, Zhu Yi Long has continued to broaden his way of acting, to show the audience different different roles.  We also look forward to seeing more works of actor Zhu Yi Long on the big screen in the future! 

 

 

How Awesome Is The Movie:  "Lighting Up The Stars" ?

1) The Production Cost was only slightly more than 50 Million.  The Lowest Forecast before the opening was 330 Million.  Maoyan predicted 666 Million on the Opening Day.  But the Actual Box Office was 1.712 Billion !

 

2) Shanghai is disabled.  Beijing is half-disabled (by the Epidemic Control).  Ticket warehouse in many places across the country are half-disabled.  Breaking through 100 Million in a single day in a row, crushing the Hollywood Blockbuster (Jurasic Park 2) in the same period.

 

3) Not only did it continue to go against the Law of the Market (reverse decline), but it also drove the Market to reverse, surpassing the same period  before the Epidemic.  Creating a Miracle in June 2022.

 

4) With 40+% of film screenings for several consecutive days, 70+% of the Box Office was produced.  Maintaining a Super High Output Ratio of screenings.

 

5) Double-Platform ratings of 9.7 by viewers who bought tickets for the show.  Setting a three-year record, high word-of-mouth drove a large number of low-frequency audiences to enter the theater in the cold.  Movie Channel Review:  A Genuine Rescue Work.

 

6) The Domestic Launch swept the champions of all platforms.  The overseas Netflix launch also swept all over Asia.  Taiwan, China won the championship for three consecutive weeks and won the Third Place in the Annual Ranking when it launched in October 2022.

 

7) The Golden Rooster Award is the highest award in Chinese Film Art.   "Lighting Up The Stars" was nominated for 7 core awards.   Zhu Yi Long won the Best Actor Award.   The praise from the industry is well-deserved.

 

As for the Director, Producer, Peers and Industry Researchers who praised Zhu Yi Long's performance and his contribution to the film's success, there are too many materials to fit in the Eighteen Palaces.

Zhu Yi Long:  A Slow Walker Who Perseveres

 

His childhood, his struggles....  in his own words.

 

Few people know.  His mother suggested that he attended a Three Months Special Arts Training Course before applying to be An Actor.  After that he was actually accepted  Not By One.   But by a few Filming Academies.   In the end he chose Beijing Film Academy. 

 

It is very difficult to be accepted by One Filming Academy. Requirements is strict.  Competition is keen.

 

Yet he "qualified for a few".  And he  :

- Is Not a Child Star

- Did not have any Filming Experience

- Was Not from an Arts or Filming School like what some of his Beijing Film Academy classmates were

 

Yet he was courted by a Few Filming Academies right after his 3 Months' Special Class.  It just shows that he is Either A Fast Learner.  Or just plain intelligent.  If it were other Actors, they would have long "Boasted" about this already.

 

But Zhu Yi Long never say a word about it at all.  This was revealed by a few people who knows about it.

 

I wonder what else about him that we did not know.

5 years apart.  And the Age really shows. 

"Guardian" (Shen Wei) started filming in April 2017 in Shanghai.

"Lighting Up The Stars" (Mo San Mei) started filming on 27 May  2021, in Wuhan.

 

Shen Wei looks so much Younger and Fresher.  Don't you all think so ?   Not just the "Face".   But the "Body" too

Zhu Yi Long:  Is Right To Take A Vacation Now

 

Because, he is going to get Busy real soon.

 

April 2023:  Beijing International Film Festival.  I am not sure if Zhu Yi Long will attend.

 

May 2023:  Aranya Waves Film Festival.  This will be held in Aranya Gold Coast Community.    Zhu Yi Long is a member of the Youth Arts Committee.  So we will definitely see him there.

 

 

 

 

May 2023:  Cannes Film Festival in France.  I am not sure if Zhu Yi Long is attending.  Maybe not. 

 

June 2023: Zhu Yi Long's movie - "Lost In The Stars" will premiere on 22 June - the "Dragon Boat Festival".   He will definitely be busy with the Promotional Activities again.

 

November 2023:  "Golden Rooster Film Festival" again.   I wonder which movie of his will be in contention.  Whatever it is, being 2022's Movie King, Zhu Yi Long will definitely need to grace the occasion.

Zhu Yi Long:   Hong Kong Movie  "Eternal Wave"

Zhu Yi Long once filmed a Hong Kong made movie called - "Eternal Wave" (密战) in 2017.  He was 29 years' old at that time and had a supporting role.   He was more Handsome than the Male Lead - Aaron Kwok.  In the clip below, you can hear the Loud Applause he received.

Zhu Yi Long:  36th Huading Awards 2023

 

"Lighting Up The Stars" is nominated for the  "Best Film Award".

 

 

 

The complete list for the  36th Huading Best Film Award 2023 are: 

"Watergate Bridge of Changjin Lake" (China)

"Sniper" (China)

"Detective Wars" (Hong Kong)

"Lighting Up The Stars" (China)

"War of Tomorrow" (Hong Kong)

 

At Least China is more "Impartial" and "inclusive".  Out of the 5 Nominations, 2 are from Hong Kong.   Whereas the recently completed Hong Kong-based 16th Asian Film Awards totally "Ignored"  China.  

 

I would like to ask where is "When The Wind Rises Again",  the Hong Kong Movie which recently won the the 16th Asian Film Best Actor Award for Tony Leung.  It never makes any head-way elsewhere.

 

 

While Zhu Yi Long is nominated for the  "Best Actor Award" for his role as Mo San Mei in  "Lighting Up The Stars".   "Congratulations!!".   I hope he wins it.  He really deserves all these Accolades.  May his Good Fortune continues in 2023.

@shura-emrys  You have a point.   The characters are different.  And we can barely recognise Zhu Yi Long  once he "Transforms" into his Movie-Character.   

Perhaps the "Make-Up" plays a part too.  For "Lighting Up The Stars", they applied "Black Make-Up Liquid" on his Face and Body to make him looks "Darker".

Zhu Yi Long:  His Kindness Made Him Famous

 

When filming  "Guardian", the director's casting was based on a one-to-one selection of the male protagonists in the novel.

 

But the director never expected that after so much effort, the candidate to play Shen Wei would run away without thinking.  Just because he was offered "More Money" by another party.

 

Worse is, the investors withdrew their investment as soon as they saw the male lead running away. The situation directly made the director very angry.

 

In desperation, the director could only continue to urgently search for suitable actors. At that moment, he thought of Zhu Yi Long, who had worked with him before.

 

Fortunately, Zhu Yi Long's cute and aggressive appearance in black-rimmed glasses made many fans called him "husband". 

 

 

 

 

But what impressed the director was that as soon as Zhu Yi Long's Ye Zun appeared on the stage, the audience fell in love with him again. This character has only appeared in a few episodes.

 

 

 

Zhu Yi Long was kind enough to help someone in distress.  He did not look down on the Director for losing the Financial Support.  Instead he helped the Director by using his own clothes for his "Guardian-Characters".   Even helped to make "Subtle Improvisations"  for his "Characters" - in terms of their "Clothings" as well as their "Mannerisms".

Zhu Yi Long:  Just "One Hour" Of Your Time !

As WWF Global Ambassador for Global Wildlife Crime Campaign Zhu Yi Long request for Earth Hour 2023. It will be held on Mar 25, 2023, at 20:30.

 

He pleads: "Please give An Hour for the Planet, and for the protection of Wildlife, by turning off all the Lights for An Hour.  From 8:30 - 9:30pm on 25 March 2023".
