drama tropes we love and hate!

#89 Damaged male lead

Don't we know it all? We can witness this specific male lead in melodramas/revenge dramas. The male lead does have a either terrible or actually decent childhood but experiences a terrible loss, either parents or siblings. Or they get betrayed by their very first love ever. Left behind is a emotionally damaged male lead who doesn't know how to smile - aside from malicious smiles while planning the revenge he waited for.

The male lead also treats the female lead either as a device for his revenge or/and like trash until he realizes she is the one who will heal him with her love.

I enjoy revenge dramas with emotionally damaged leads but it's also so problematic.

so what is the significance? there is reference to it in lots of kdramas but other than it being all pretty, they never explain it....

It's a superstitious belief that the person that you're outside with on the day of the first snow so that both of you are hit by the snow while together is the person that you're meant to be with. And, if you are with your partner already, then it reaffirms that you will be together forever.

On a more practical side, I think it's because first snowfall is always so pretty. A snowfall is silent unlike rain, and it actually has a slightly muffling effect as well in that it can interrupt sound waves so the world itself may seem quieter. And, finally, that first snowfall looks pretty with the clean white snow falling everywhere and making things look like a Christmas card. Later on, the snow will turn to mush and slush and become dirty and a pain for traffic and chores, as well as probably being unsightly with dirt and pollutants added to the mix. So, since it's so beautiful, I think that moment of enchantment with the first snow was turned into the superstition having to do with true love.  But, this is now just speculation. I just learned about the superstition and not necessarily how the superstition was created. :)

#8 the rooftop room - don't know about the rent on these places

I call it the Rooftop RatHole!  It is in every other KDrama.  AND, it is the exact same one!  Some production company must own the building.

I had not seen it in the last few KDramas, and it suddenly appeared, all-decked-out, in Because This is my First Life. It doesn't have running water, or a flush toilet, or heat, but everyone in a KDrama lives there because of the killer view and cheap rent.

#90 Mangled foreign languages

It's usually English that's painstakingly (mis)pronounced, but more recently German, French, and Spanish also seem to have been highlighted. It happens in kdramas, since every rich person in a kdrama has to have been educated overseas, forcing the poor actor who probably has not been educated overseas into speaking the foreign words as best as he can. For international fans, this can have the effect of throwing cold water over the glamor of the rich, chaebol man or woman, but it is a very common trope. I wonder if the productions couldn't afford 1 decent vocal coach, but then remember that these dramas are meant for the domestic Korean audience rather than us international fans.

#89 or 90? - The FIRST LOVE that can't be forgotten!

#90 or 91?  - Using English words when Korean words exist:  First Love / Good Night / Wife-ah / Sign-ah (autograph) / Oh Yeah & BINGO!  Don't know where in the US people say BINGO except old folks at a real Bingo game.

#91 or 92:  Singing "Clementine."  NO ONE in the US sings that song, most don't even know the words.

Appears that 100 KDrama tropes just scratches the surface.  No one has mentioned the Fake Baby/Pregnancy, secret traditional medicine, or ultrasound image tropes yet.  Then there are the switched babies, soul-swapping, secret plastic surgery, pretending to be gay...

May need to update to 200 or 300 KDrama Tropes.  Didn't realize there were so many until The List.

Speaking of the first snow... I wasn’t crazy about Goblin but I have to say the cinematography was breathtaking. That takes me to another trope...

#93 Reincarnated lovers / Soulmates

This is a trope that’s especially favourite in k-dramas. Falling in love with someone from your past, someone who looks like your first love etc. Reincarnation was the main theme of Goblin, then there’s Black Knight, Rooftop Prince, Splash Splash Love, Legend of the Blue Sea, Orange Marmalade, ...

@aisling, I really, really dislike the reincarnation trope... Also, I think that may be #94 since @watchumlots actually wrote 91-93.

#95 Alzheimer's

I think this is an attempt to try to educate the Korean public about Alzheimer's which is becoming more common among Koreans, as it is in much of the world, as more and more of the population live to older ages. This has been a common ailment more recently for older characters in mini-series, dailies, and weekenders. In older dramas, older folks were seen to have dementia, but nowadays, they seem to specifically mention Alzheimer's.

#97 Strong arms of male lead

There are two types of carrying the girl. Male lead will straightly tossed her up onto his shoulder or he'll carry her like a light feather on both his strong arms.

#98 Pillow arm

The best pillow that the girl can get. It features with automatic temperature.

#99 a shoulder to cry or a hug to pat the sorrow heart.

The moment a hero find his girl crying or depressed, he'll pull her into his embrace or offer her his shoulder to just let her vent her depression.

#100 Aegyo

Both male and female lead will lure their love with an aegyo.

So, we've reached a 100 already. Aww, that's the end.

Thank you @Lmangla! It was fun.

No, it's really not fluent at all. It's funny how entranced with a character I may be, and then the scene of barely understandable English hits me, and I just think "WHY?" I mean couldn't they have just let him stay a suave Korean man and assumed that he can speak English rather than making him suffer trying to get through the words and make me suffer having to watch while wincing. And some actors are just worse than others. No names mentioned since I don't want to offend anyone's oppas. :D

But kpop can also be pretty bad in terms of their English. It actually may not sound too bad since it's sung or rapped, but the words themselves can sometimes make no sense. For instance, I actually liked the song "Mamacita" by SuJu, but it was ruined by one line "Just close your lips, shut your tongue." The first part of it is fine "just close your lips", however, the second part made no sense to me whatsoever. There is an English saying "hold your tongue" which is probably what they were thinking maybe, but whoever wrote the lyric just got it wrong, and no one told them that it just sounds weird.

Whenever I listen to kpop, it's fine until they inevitably break out into English. They should just give a part time job to a native English speaker to just review lyrics and dialogue and point out anything that is just weird or nonsensical to catch the bleeding obvious. :)

Epinephrine is a natural hormone produced in your body, usually called adrenaline, e.g, the stuff that is produced when one is excited or one is having a fight/flight response. And, it has a lot of uses in your body, causing smooth muscles to relax and striated muscles to contract, and having an effect of stimulation of some systems and restriction of other systems.

So, epinephrine in drug form is used pretty commonly, for instance, in anaphylaxis, e.g. severe, acute allergy symptoms, epinephrine is used to counter the symptoms (e.g. EpiPen). And, when the heart is failing, epinephrine is one of the medication that is used to try to help the heart, usually by injection directly into the blood stream. In times of cardiac arrest, under certain circumstances, it can be injected directly into the heart to try to help restart it and stabilize the heartbeat.

Also, since the body produces it naturally as well, there aren't issues of the body rejecting epinephrine, though there are some side effects of an epi application, including fast heart beat and elevation of blood pressure, and adding epi to a stable system may actually cause the heart to become temporarily irregular.

So, it's not just a medical drama thing. It's not a miracle drug, but it's close.

The wet cloth fever wipe, however, may help someone feel better since they're heating up, but it doesn't actually treat the fever itself. In order to break the fever faster, one may acetaminophen, ibuprofen or another NSAID. However, those just treat the fever as well. Usually, the fever is a symptom of something else going on in the body, and so one doesn't become better until the underlying issues have worked itself out. And, the wet cloth doesn't have that much efficacy.

lol thanks for tagging me stroppyse.  I'll get back to drama tropes in a while.  Glanced at @Lmangla's list, not sure if you got to 100 yet but I have a few in mind.

- To answer your questions about wet nap, Kdrama gets it 1/2 right.  Fever can be from several sources:

1) if the fever is caused by infections, disease, etc.. any organism or substance that caused our hypothalamus to increase our body temp set point, a wet nap won't be able to cure the fever.  The hypothalamus in the brain is like the thermostat of your AC/heating unit in your house.  It keeps your core body temperature constant by heat up (closing blood vessels, increasing body metabolism) or cooling down (sweating/ dilating the surface blood vessels).  An infection triggers immune system cytokines releases and tells the brain to increase the temperature.  It's our own body's smart way to notify us that something is wrong.  In this case, to bring down the fever, we have to use drugs that block or reduces the immune cytokines and chemicals levels to dial back the hypothalamus's overdrive.  We then treat the infections separately to remove offending substances.

2) if the fever is caused by hot weather, overexertion or heat stroke, drugs wouldn't work but cool compress or wet nap would.  The person needs to be cooled immediately with cold water/ice or a fan.  Most of time, we apply it to the forehead thinking that it's directly over the brain but anything that opens up the pores to let heat out or dilate the blood vessels would do.  A wet nap would be able reduce body heat because it is not pyrogen-mediated.

- About epinephrine, it's a blood vessel constrictor.  During an emergency or code, we do all that we can to keep the heart and brain alive.  We give epinephrine to squeeze shut and compress all blood vessels and direct the blood back to the heart and brain.   It also binds to the heart muscle receptors to increase heart muscle contraction, heart rate and electrical conductivity.  The funny thing is that while it contracts the smooth muscles in your blood vessels to bring up blood pressure, it relaxes the smooth muscles of your lungs, bladder and uterine.  How I remember what it does is to remember the fight/flight response... Like when you are hiking and see a bear, what happens to your body and reactions.  You releases epinephrine.  Your heart rate goes up, your eyes dilate, blood pumping to your brain and heart.  You hyperventilate and breathe hard.  BUT, while you are running away from the bear, some people would also experience lost of control of their bladder.

No, seriously. I personally think love triangles are there to create conflict among the people who watch the same drama. Love triangles are there to create conflict. Period. Because you always have the people who side with the OTP and you have the people who side with the second lead.

And apparently fans love to see two guys fight over one girl like two Neanderthal men fighting over who is worthy carrying the girl to their cave. And then they call it cute. ROFL
