The first season of the show was met with widespread critical acclaim after its premiere last year, leaving many eagerly anticipating the second season.

Kim Eun Hee expressed her surprise at the reaction the show received. “I could naver have imagined the popularity [“Kingdom” got],” she said. “I did my best to make it as Korean as possible, because I wanted people to see it and become more curious about Korea.”

Kim Sung Hoon, the director behind “Kingdom,” added, “Of course we hoped people would be interested and love our show, but there’s no way we could have imagined it would be to this extent.”

Lead actor Joo Ji Hoon, who plays the exiled crown prince Lee Chang, said after viewing the trailer, “Watching this now, it’s hard to believe that I’m standing here next to the ‘World Bae’ (Bae Doona) knowing how much works she’s done overseas. I find myself wondering ‘Is this real life, or is this just fantasy?'” making the crowd laugh.

Bae Doona expressed her gratitude, saying, “I don’t have the words to express my happiness that we’re receiving this much love and support for our work as Korean actors and as a Korean production. This is the happiest I’ve ever been.”

Thankfully she heard us out. If you watch the second season, you’ll find out exactly what kind of character that role was.”

On the topic of potential future seasons, Kim Eun Hee joked, “We’d need investors.” For a more serious answer, she said, “Season two needs to do well. But since it’s a story that could definitely grow if season two receives a lot of love, I think it could grow to be a worldwide type of work. If it’s possible, I’d love the chance to continue all the way to season 10.”

Director Kim shared, "I think we will overcome this, as always. I will support and encourage the Government and officials of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - who are fighting this contagious disease."

Director Park In Je - who is directing the acting from episode 2 to episode 6 of "Kingdom 2" - expressed his wish, "I hope you guys will enjoy the work in this difficult time."

Regarding any spoilers for 'Kingdom' season 2, Joo Ji Hoon hinted, "I felt after reading the script that season 2 got to the bottom of a lot of the cliffhangers of season 1. It's like, 'The bowl will be full of fish' by the end of season 2."

So from the trailer, think:

Ahn dies. It is his funeral at which JJH is seen quivering and the Prime Minister seeming as though he has won that round.

We need a Bae Doona's character like doctor to solve this corona virus problem in our real world, and sooooon.

All zombies look the same, so who did Ahn kill in self defence. His face was shocked when he sworded that bound zombie. Was it the king? Oh yes, the king has been brought from his palace by the evil prime minister. So is it him then...

Does the Prime M die and his daughter take over? At the end, she is wearing funereal clothes and is on the throne and free to reign. As JJh says - one of us has to die - so it is him or her at the end..

When the line comes - will you join me - I know it is JJH asking Young Shin - I was waiting for this moment since S1. Knew he will become JJH's right hand. Probably after Ahn , JJH is now the leader and has a trustworthy partner with him.

Like that there is no romance and stuff. These women here own themselves. The men are at their feet. Ha. Love to see this.

Lots more happening in the trailer, but can't sitting watching the trailer when life beckons.

JJH - hottie hottie!!!

Bae D - Dignified and a ray of hope.

Other actors all tops.

Drop Drop Drop the OST now, Kingdom team.

S10? NOOoooooooo. At S2 end it.

‘Kingdom’ returns for another bloody battle: The palace continues to fight off zombies in Netflix’s global hit

Mar 06, 2020

Friday the 13th may usually be considered a bad omen for the superstitious, but fans of the hit Netflix show “Kingdom” are counting down the days until Friday, March 13, when the second season will be made available worldwide.

The story of a zombie apocalypse happening during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and the power struggles between the royal family in the face of a epidemic made the show Netflix Korea’s first original series to become an international hit.

The series was included on a top 10 list of the Best International TV shows in 2019 selected by The New York Times, and fans of the show all around the world have become increasingly excited as the trailer for the second season was released and posters promoting the series went up on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, on the Westin Michigan Avenue in Chicago and Times Square in New York City.

“I think [the global audience] are curious and excited about the series because we tried to create something that was our own, that derives from the heart of Korean culture,” writer Kim Eun-hee said during a press conference held on Thursday.

“Working overseas as an individual and appearing in foreign films is of course an achievement, but there are really no words to describe the indescribable joy I feel to be loved and recognized through a local film for Koreans. I’ve never been so proud of ‘Kingdom’ as I am now,” actor Bae Doo-na said.

What avid fans of the show will be most eager to find out is whether or not all the “bait” that was thrown in the first season - all the detailed hints and mysteries that remain unsolved - will be resolved in the next season.

“Not only will they all be resolved, but Kim also leaves new bait for viewers to chew on at the end of the season,” actor Ryu Seung-ryong said.

“As I read the scripts for each episode, at the end of each episode I would exclaim, ‘Really? Is this how it happens? Through this character?’” Bae said, complimenting the writer’s meticulous yet tight plot. “There are new twists and surprises around every corner, every episode. We even didn’t expect the story to be thrown off this way.”

The end of first season leaves the main characters - the Crown Prince Lee Chang (played by Ju Ji-hoon) and his forces - waiting in fear as hundreds of zombies emerge from a thick fog, running at full speed towards their line of defense.

All the actors and creators agreed that the second season is where the story “really begins to spread out.”

The actors also dropped hints about how their characters change in the second season.

“Lee Chang transitions from a target to a pursuer,” Ju said. “It all comes down to his role and responsibility as the crown prince who grows into his position as a true king for his people and his kingdom.”

“Seo-bi continues to be a physician on the front lines working to save as many people as she can,” Bae said. “But as Seo-bi joins forces with the prince she becomes smarter, I think. If in the former season she spent most of her time trying to get her bearings, now she’s calmer and more focused on trying to find a solution.”

“I tried to retain the tension from the first season,” Ryu said. “The viewers will be able to witness how Cho Hak-ju’s greed for power reaches its climax. Even though there aren’t any big actions for Cho, I wanted to show how a human desire can be even scarier than a plague.”

Actor Kim Hye-jun, who plays the young ambitious queen, is still vicious in seeking to quench her thirst for power.

“She became a queen at such a young age, and yet she is still power-hungry, obsessed with taking control of the kingdom through ‘her’ baby,” Kim said. “In this season, she may be plotting her own schemes that even her father [Cho Hak-ju] can’t imagine.”

Director Park In-je, who directed most of the second season, was extra careful not to say anything in fear of spoiling the show.

“The story spins off like a roller coaster ride,” Park said. “But basically, the story is about how the prince dives deeper into finding out what the plague exactly is, how he will accept it and what his responsibilities are as a king and lastly, how the kingdom is ruined.”

The creators and actors hinted quite strongly that the second season will not be the show’s last. As the “Kingdom” universe continues to expand, writer Kim Eun-hee said that if she can, she would love to extend the series into 10 seasons.

“But next season will only be possible if the second one does well,” Kim said.

“If the first season’s theme was about hunger - the commoner’s hunger due to poverty that led to the spread of the plague versus the hunger for power in palace politics - the second season is after blood. Not just regarding the plague, but about heritage and bloodlines as well. Viewers will see the sharp comparison between how the zombies’ cravings for blood and power-driven humans’ desire to continue their bloodline co-exist.”

“No matter what viewers have imagined, it’s going to be more,” Ryu promised the awaiting fans. “If BTS rocked the music industry and ‘Parasite’ wowed the film market, ‘Kingdom’ will once again impress the global audiences through streaming platforms.”

The second season will be released on the platform at 5 p.m. on March 13.

Global streaming giant Netflix’s zombie-thriller “Kingdom” is returning with a second season next week, with the same cast members and even bloodier action than before.

Taking place in the Joseon era, “Kingdom” tells the story of how Prince Chang struggles to save his kingdom from a fast-spreading mystery disease.

Featuring the same main cast members from the first season, “Kingdom” season two will star Ju Ji-hoon as Prince Chang, Bae Doona as medical assistant Seo-bi, delving into the secrets of a herb behind the disease that turns humans into zombies, and Ryu Seung-ryong as Jo Hak-joo, the power-hungry minister trying to overthrow the prince.

According to Kim Eun-hee, writer of both seasons of “Kingdom,” the first season was a prelude to the war with the zombies with the follow-up showing the war between mankind and zombies, and how the characters uncover the circumstances behind the disease,

The writer, directors Kim Seon-hun and Park In-je and the main cast of the drama series -- Ju, Bae, Ryu, Kim Sang-ho, Jeon Seok-ho, Kim Sang-kyu and Kim Hae-joon -- discussed the upcoming drama series during a livestreamed press conference Thursday.

“This season will be all about blood,” the writer said.

“Not only about red blood, but about the royal blood as well. The series will depict both the bloodthirsty sufferers of the ‘undead disease’ and mankind lusting at the throne.”

According to Ju, the second season will be even more intense and frenetic than the previous season.

“While Prince Chang was being chased in the previous season, he’ll transform into a chaser in the stories to come,” Ju said.

“Kingdom” season two is also the first drama series in Korea to be produced by two directors, each taking charge of different episodes. While Kim from the original season produced the first episode of the second season, Park directed the remaining five episodes.

“Prince Chang, who chases after the secrets of ‘Saengsacho’ (the herb of the undead) in season one, will find out what it is and what he can do for his kingdom in the following season. It will be about the demolition of the kingdom,” director Park said.

Top Korean actress Jun Ji-hyun stars in the second season of “Kingdom,” although her exact role has not yet been revealed.

“Kingdom,” which debuted in January 2019, proved to be a worldwide hit, even with the exclusively Korean language and settings of the story. Netflix, confident in its success, had confirmed the production of the second season even before airing the initial episodes.

The producers hinted at another season still to come.

“If the second season turns out to be a success, hopefully we could return with the story set in a bigger universe. Personally, I’m hoping to go for ten seasons,” the writer said.

The six-episode season two will be released exclusively on Netflix on March 13.

Me too. One of my favorite things about K Dramas is the "1 and done" story structure.  It's just so nice not to have endless seasons that drag everything out. I was praying hard that Season 2 would wrap things up and be the end of the drama. So disappointed to hear the scriptwriter talking about "Season 10".

'Kingdom' cast hint that young queen will play big role in season 2

The much anticipated Netflix original series "Kingdom" season 2 will premiere on March 13 with the original cast. The new season will pick up from the ending of season 1 with a more intense storyline and additional characters.

"Kingdom" is a zombie mystery thriller set during the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1897). Consisting of six episodes, the story revolves around Crown Prince Yi Chang, played by Ju Ji-hoon, who fights against a mysterious plague and the people behind an evil scheme.

Season 2 will star the previous main cast, including Ju, Bae Doo-na and Ryu Seung-ryong, and will feature a guest appearance by Jun Ji-hyun. Details about Jun's character are still under wraps.

Screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, who also wrote popular TV series "Signal," drew the story from a 19th century royal court document that recorded tens of thousands of deaths in the capital amid the outbreak of an unidentified epidemic.

Kim Seong-hun, the director behind the previous season, produced the first episode of season 2 while another director Park In-jae newly joined to produce episodes 2 to 6.

The first season of "Kingdom" was released in January last year and grabbed viewers' attention worldwide for combining the concepts of zombies and historical drama.

"Compared with season 1 when zombies rise, season 2 will feature how the Joseon Kingdom falls. It will be an absolute rollercoaster," director Park said.

"The young queen, played by Kim Hye-jun, will be playing a bigger role so please look forward to her new transformation."

He also expected the drama's international audience to display their interest in Korean architecture during the Joseon Kingdom.

In season 1, many viewers showed interest in "gat," a traditional Korean hat seen in the show. In the past, Koreans wore varying styles of "gat" based on their social status and circumstances.

"You might want to look closely into Korean architecture. It's very detail-oriented and colorful," Park said.

Writer Kim said she wanted to focus more on familial politics and power struggles. "For this season, I wanted to feature how blood ties and family were of particularly great importance during the Joseon Kingdom. Bloodline also played a role in dividing social classes," she said.

Actor Ju expressed satisfaction about his character, who transforms his role to become the savior of his people from that of a wanted man in season 1.

"In the first season, I was running away from the evil Cho Hak-joo clan, the queen's family. In the second season, I'll be going after them to become the next king," he said.

Ju said he enjoyed working with Netflix because of the freedom and sufficient time they granted him.

"Because 'Kingdom' had only six episodes unlike any other Korean TV series that usually consist of 16 episodes, we were able to make it high quality," he said.

Actress Bae explained that while season 1 is about witnessing the rise of the new plague, season 2 is about figuring out what causes the zombies to stay active and how to prevent infection.

"Kingdom" season 2 will be seen in over 190 countries through Netflix. Subtitles will be available in 27 languages, and dubbed versions will also be available.

'Kingdom' returns for 2nd season with real cliffhanging zombie thriller

16:43 March 05, 2020

By Kim Boram

SEOUL, March 5 (Yonhap) -- Actors in the second season of the smash-hit Netflix zombie thriller "Kingdom" said Thursday that the upcoming series will be a real cliffhanger as it has some fresh ideas and plots.

The sequel to the first Korean original series by Netflix is a story of a crown prince of the Joseon Dynasty, Lee Chang, who has to fight against a mysterious plague and flesh-eating zombies that threaten the country on a large scale.

Based on the huge success of the first season, which was released in January last year, the U.S. online streaming service provider Netflix earlier prepared for the new six-episode original project, with the main cast of Ju Ji-hoon, Bae Doo-na and Ryu Seung-ryong reprising their roles. Star actress Jun Ji-hyun will also take a role in the new season.

Ju, who acts in the role of the crown prince, said that fans will fall in love with the upcoming show again thanks to unexpected storylines and characters in a historical setting with more spectacular episodes.

"In the first season, I was the one being pursued, but in the second season, I become a pursuer," he said in an online press conference. "And all foreboding events or presages will be explained and portrayed in the second season."

In the previous season, the crown prince is accused of treason in a political power game after the king is taken with a deadly disease, and he becomes the only hope to save the zombie-hit kingdom in the following season.

Actress Bae Doo-na, playing a female physician who cooperates with the crown prince to fight against the pandemic, said she was surprised by the screenplay filled with bizarre reversals.

"When I first read the script, I gasped in astonishment at every episode," she said. "My character has grown to give resolution to the epidemic."

Kim Eun-hee, the screenwriter of the series, said that blood is the main theme of the second season, while she focused on hunger that led people to turn into zombies last time.

"I wants to talk more about blood, or bloodline. Patients crave blood, while humans long for a bloodline or lineage," she said. "The drama will portray the two different worlds of people who desire blood."

The author, who has created many hit TV series including the thriller "Signal" (2016), also hinted at the possibility of a third season.

"If this latest series gains popularity, we will probably be given a chance to produce the next season," she said. "I wish that I can participate in the project until the 10th season."

The second season of "Kingdom" is set to premiere globally on the U.S. video streaming service on March 13.

So it is 6 episodes long only?  Netflix is milking the storyline for many years  Good that they have a presscon, good idea that it’s online.

It will be the first dubbed Kdrama that I watch, not sure how I feel about that.

Posters look good.  Have to rewatch S1 a bit before March 13.  Good luck to the drama.

The responses from the two PDs and KEH are bleak and hilarious at the same time, which does not give me much hope if we ever encounter a zombie apocalypse :sweatingbullets: Love Kim Sung Kyu's response too, despite his awesome fighter role in the drama!  Looks like the only one we can pin our hopes on is BDN, fingers crossed she'll whip up a cure and save us all!

Netflix's Kingdom: Who among the cast and creators would survive a real-life zombie apocalypse?

She wrote magnificent tales of human bravery and sacrifice, and they orchestrated jaw-dropping scenes of impassioned battles against rabid zombies.

And even if it was only on-screen, the stellar cast of Netflix's Joseon-era zombie apocalypse hit drama series Kingdom must have learnt a thing or two about survival skills.

So during AsiaOne's video conference interviews yesterday (March 5) with the creators and key cast members of Kingdom Season 2, we asked them this: "If there was a zombie apocalypse in real life, how do you think you will survive through it?"

Some of their answers, given through a translator, might surprise you.

Kim Eun-hee, the writer for Kingdom, said: "I think often about (a zombie apocalypse). Whenever I am in a parking lot, I try to imagine: if a zombie were to appear, where would the best parking spot be? But realistically speaking, if there were a zombie apocalypse, it would be more convenient for me to die as fast as I can."

executive producer (EP) of Kingdom Season 2, Kim Seong-hun, said he wouldn't put up a fight. "Rather than running away from the zombies only to be bitten by them in the end, I would just be still, stand there, and accept my fate."

Park In-je, the director of Kingdom Season 2, added: "I'd like to go the largest supermarket I could find, and eat as much food as I could, things that I wasn't able to enjoy before, play games, enjoy everything available to humans, and drink. Ultimately, I'd be bitten and become a zombie, but until I do so, I would like to enjoy myself as much as possible."

Seriously? They don't even fight back like the heroes in their drama series do? We probed them harder on their answers and EP Kim explained: "As I worked on (Kingdom), I felt that it's so much work to run away for survival. So — watching (the actors) and creating the series — I came to the conclusion that rather than do that, I'd rather accept my fate."

Writer Kim then added: "If you look at the leads on all the other projects and different genres that I worked on, they always tend to be extremely tenacious, never know when to quit, and go against all odds. That's because I tend to write about characters that I wish I could be more like. If (the zombie attacks) were to happen in reality… I would just give up and die."

Director Park gave a convincing — though depressing — possible consequence of the bleak future. He said: "I can do a simulation in my head. If I eat everything at the supermarket, I've got no more food, I'll have to resort to farming but I'll still need to eat meat. But I can't eat zombie meat because we all know what happens when you do that. I will try to survive but I think at the end of the day, I'll become a zombie."

Thankfully, some of the main cast members were more gungho about their survival. Leading man Ju Ji-hoon, who plays Crown Prince Lee Chang in the drama, told us: "Zombies can't get into the water, so what I'll do is get on a ship and try to find help, send out an SOS, because there won't be a lot of food on the ship."

Bae Doona, who plays Seo-bi, said: "My character is constantly focused on finding the reason for the epidemic and also the treatment, so I have a few ideas up my sleeve. But I can't tell you because there will be spoilers. But definitely, I will do something. I'm not allowed to say anymore… I'm just going to run as fast as I can."

"I don't think I will enjoy being bitten on many different places on the body, so I'm just going to let (the zombies) know where they can kill me in one bite," Kim Sung-Kyu said, to erupting laughter from Doona. He plays the mysterious fighter Young-shin in Kingdom.

Looks like Ji-hoon and Doona are our best bet for surviving a zombie attack!

Season 2 of Kingdom will be available on Netflix from March 13.

Before the 2nd season starts I wanted to write what scares me, before all my hopes are crushed : I really hope Young Shin survives this season, I'm even more worried because we didn't see him that much in the trailers, so does that means it's the end for him ?! :bawling:

I'm super excited for 3/13!!:D

I believe Jo Hak Joo's has created another monster unintentionally.

The student will become the teacher and he did that by making his daughter Regent Queen.

I have my suspension that he doesn't know she is faking her pregnancy either.

Darn Netflix making us wait over a year. I strongly detest how it is messing up the k-drama watching culture and experience.

You guys!!!! I cannot wait! Bring on the zombies! Bring on the blood! Bring on JJH's hotness!!!

I'm hoping they will provide a quick recap from season 1 though in the beginning of season 2 because my brain can't recall all that took place a year ago.

I have just finished the season 2 and it was great!! Curious about the season 3.

@bebebisous33I also just finished season 2 and wow. It manages to be just as exciting and amazing as the first season. Also yep def. more gruesome and bloody. Excellent job to the writer, director and all actors. It goes down as one of my fav K drama of all times.

Spoiler

Love that they kept it unpredictable and really messed with us lol. I was yelling at the TV, holding my breath, laughing and crying at different times. I was NOT expecting such a time jump at the end.

I was also wondering how the worms survived in the young king while everyone else was fine. My theory is that maybe the worms hibernate until the brain matures  because Seobi was trying to say that baby had immunity but I think she was wrong.

JJH’s cameo at the very end does make it very interesting for season 3. Wonder what her character is and if possibly a villain?!

ahh the wait for season 3!

Can they like release the s3 within the year? It's hard to wait for a year every season... I mean, we're only 3 months in to 2020 and A LOT of things have happened already. I have to make sure to keep myself alive so I can see JJH be a badass in S3.
