crackaddict
It's interesting that Chinese novel fans are saying that drama FX is dumber...I would say that he's certainly less omniscient but way more warm and likable compared to novel FX (as stated earlier). Through my skimming, I didn't like how novel FX was described as ruthless and empty inside (whether he is or not, meh. i'm just less invested in him overall). As the central character, I feel it's interesting to watch him try to understand other characters' motivations and form deep strong bonds with the people around him. Please forgive me because I am a simple audience member, but I'm loving the adaptation, esp the diversity of female characters. Last week, I felt a lot of love for Lin Wan'er in the scene with Grand Princess. To me, she was originally a placid and mild character with no personal thoughts or motivations beyond being a virtuous wife. But drama LWE, not only got to explain why she would always stand by FX's side, but also showed how she would react when FX had failed to account for her feelings when dealing with her brother and mother. Left turn here, but did anyone else react when Wu Zhu realized that he missed FX's mom?? Can anyone confirm who is the woman that Crown Prince keeps drawing? Is there actually a man in the heart of the Grand Princess? I have some hunches but want to know what other's think... We talk a lot about Zhang Ruoyun overall, but I'm wondering what are viewers' (here and abroad) thoughts about other characters on the show?

Can anyone confirm who is the woman that Crown Prince keeps drawing? Ruthless and empty sounds like him, it fits his background in the novel. He's not really popular (comparatively to other protags) according to the book fans, some of them just treat him like a pov character to see the far more interesting supporting cast & story. It's common to reduce abilities of characters, since they are often overpowered and it can be unrealistic, some people get annoyed about it though. For the drawing Spoiler It's Grand Princess isn't it, the hair style looks like it? I'm still hilariously behind on the drama lolol, so I'm mostly tracking how it's doing domestically, s2 progress, effects of the leaks etc. The leak had an effect (less hits on both iqiyi & tencent) but it's still topping every chart it's on. Very tangently related, for those who like plot twists, fast pacing and natural humour from JoL, with drizzle of adorable characters on an adventure, do check out scriptwriter Wang Juan's original (!!!) historical drama Young Blood that aired earlier the year. It's fairly underrated due to mostly fresh faces and wasn't picked up by major sites. The subs are almost half way through the drama and updates regularly! 1

I was like to punch the led screen seeing that unbeliavable ending. Lol. Absurd. Thus I was trying to reread the web novel for the first 400 chapters if there was any evidence that the glorious xiao zhan's character fame (the effect he was praised highly for another character in other realm) could do such a thing to his savior. And still I don't have any clue at all. Backstabbing for real... Truly a novel twist. Poor Fan Xian.... Eventhough if the sequel truly exists, out of nowhere Fan Xian is able to be saved to continue the story...it will still leave such a discomfort to those who witness it. Waiting for the miracles in the next sessions. sort of some spoilers there that should be in spoiler ;p

crackaddict
I am actually following Young Blood and found the characters to be really adorable! The characters are kind of prototypes but their interactions as young people make an older person like me go "awww that's sooo cute and funny!" It helps that they've taken the traditional school setting and transposed it into a slightly higher stakes and edgier setting. I am particularly fond of the young actor Zheng Wei and have enjoyed watching him since he was 8 years old lol, so talented. @skibbies I am glad to hear that other ppl didn't warm up to novel FX buhahahaha I feel affirmed, so thanks for confirming. For future seasons, my hope is that at least the main characters who play important roles in the latter part of the story will remain the same. Might be a bit of a tough ask. Look at how popular Xiao Zhan has become lol.

I wouldn't mind more dramas like this instead of tragic romance we tend to get more often. @lovehuche isn't it autotranslated in iqiyi? XD I think autotranslate only works for contemporary slice of life dramas, even the comedy ones might not work since a lot of gags wouldn't work. GiaGia
Up to ep 37, and I just loved how witty, sarcastic and funny the dialogue is going. The actress that portrayed the Saintess of Beiqui is quite beautiful, her looks reminds me of Song Hye Kyo. FX and the Saintess of Beiqui have chemistry right from the start; lol at his poison trick. Now, I'm suspicious of Chen PP; what is his motive to help FX and then go a different direction? Does Chen PP knows that FX is the Emperor's son? Also, I'm curious to what is Xiao An's hidden backstory with FX's mom? Keep the suspense coming!

tothestars
I dont know whether this is one of Joy of Life event or Tencent event. Li Qin n Zhang RuoYun talk about their first met in the location, but i cant understand the detail.
crackaddict
Yan Bingyun is interesting. I mean, maybe it's how XZ is playing him too. The dude has only been fierce and mean (poor Miss Shen)...but with shiny doe eyes lmaoooooo. I wonder if that's a skill one can learn? To glare at someone fiercely but still look like you're the victim and the other person has wronged you...I want to learn this skill. Poor Miss Shen. She doesn't even have a name. For this show with an ensemble cast and interesting characters, it's been hard to pick a favorite character. Even the supporting Mom characters (FX grandma, yiniang, dead mother; the different consorts) grow on you lol.
BreezeC
I just found the time to binge watched Joy of Life up to episode 39. This drama is so enjoyable, you can almost love every single characters here. I actually can't even come up with any characters I can hate. Yes, I actually do enjoy watching the black-hearted Princess. Her acting is so good to watch. I hope she comes back in Season 2. I don't want to see the end of her. I am actually surprise the discussion on this thread is not that active. I assume since it is so popular in China, I expect to see a lot of discussion here. Anyway, I am kind of dragging my feet now to finish all the episodes because I don't really have anything to watch after this lol 1 hour ago, crackaddict said: Yan Bingyun is interesting. The thing is I think his character is not that likeable alone but when he paired up with FX, the contrast between them is a joy to watch and make him kind of 'cute' and 'fun'. The clash between them both is like a clash between the historical society and the modern society views and values. To Yan BingYun, the country, the kingdom, and his duties to serve are ranked greater than himself and his feelings/emotion. (Yes, poor Miss Shen, I did realize they didn't even give her a name lol and it is so obvious that he likes her...the first time they appear and he appears to be indifferent but then his eyes follow her when she walked away to get him water...keep lying to yourself dude...I really enjoy watching this pair) To FX, his families, his friends, and fairness/equality are more important to him. Once someone steps over that line, he would do anything to protect, to revenge, to ensure justice is serve and equality is maintained. I love it when he said "I want to try..." whenever he's been ask whether he want to take this path. Meanwhile, YBY is a very intelligent young man but when it comes to his belief, he can be a little one track minded. I think what makes this drama so enjoyable to watch is the characters, they are all unique and fun to watch. In other dramas, you may want to fast forward some of the dislikable/careless characters to watch your favorites characters but for JOL, I kind of like every single characters or interesting enough to watch side characters which move the story along without dragging out the plot. Overall, I really like this drama... it is going to be a long wait when I am done... 1

And also other character, i keep watching all of them. Other drama i will fast forward or skip some characters despite antagonis or protagonis, since they are too draggy and somehow meaningless to the main plot.
