PK and ASN

Some staffers notice a stench in PK's dressing room. PK overhears them talking about it and so follows them in.

Staff: Who are you?
PK: Just a moment. (he covers ASN with a coat) It’s a friend of mine. She must have come to meet me for a minute. Would you leave for a moment so that we can have a chat?
Staff: Yes. (they leave)
PK: I didn’t do this for you. Those people all know Bu Ja’s face. I did it because I didn’t want Bu Ja to be seen as a strange person.
ASN: I came to steal and eat some energy beads. Do you want to give me some?
PK: Wait.
ASN: Are you an idiot?
PK: It’s not for your sake.
ASN: Then for her sake, will you burn me up? After Sam Jang died, I’ve kept rotting like this. I don’t even have the strength to catch and eat humans. You burn me and do away with me.

Continuation of the scene with PK and ASN. Then, the start of a conversation between SB and MW.

ASN: If it’s here, then it should be okay. Here. Please take care of this. (PK sighs) Don’t have a hard time with this. The child known as Bu Ja disappeared completely before she became an evil spirit. The only one left in this body is just me.
PK: I know. I’m not having a hard time because of you. (makes a fireball)
ASN: Should I tell you the last words that Bu Ja had left for you? (PK looks at her) “I liked you.”  (she takes PK’s fireball and sets herself alight)
(ASN disappears. PK cries.)

SB: Now, not that many hours are left. I don’t know if she’ll be able to take Oh Gong’s geumganggo off or not.
Sec. Ma: Jin Seon Mi, whether she is able to take the geumganggo off or not, it seems that she will not be able to hear the truth now. She had wanted to know.
MW: She can know. (walking in) If Oh Gong puts his memory back together, Jin Seon Mi will be able to hear what Oh Gong truly feels.
SB: How?
MW: I won’t tell you. There is a lot that you haven’t been telling me either, so why would I tell you? `

So, actually, I felt devastated for PK. And, it was such an anti-climatic ending to BJ's arc. It makes sense that BJ would have left long ago. Otherwise, when ASN had left her body, why wouldn't BJ have come back to herself. Still, it felt like a bit of an after-thought. And, then for PK to find out that BJ had liked him after all. Later on, in his conversation with Frosty, PK says that it was better to know that if it had really been BJ who had felt that way about him even if it hurts.

The conversation that MW has with SB is actually about Princess Iron Fan. MW asks SB to confirm whether PIF has reincarnated as a flower. At first, SB hems and haws, but eventually, with some sneaking glances towards heaven, SB forms a heart with his arms, confirming that PIF has reincarnated as a flower.

I just wanted to mention something. SOG was not a human so if he died after that fight with black dragon he would perish and completely gone like summer fairy so he wouldn't go to the same place as sunmi.

And probably because most of us are from a different culture I think there is a misunderstanding about that underworld,  I don't think it's the same as hell since in their heaven they have their gods not good people so it doesn't mean sunmi Will be in a bad condition in afterlife world .

The Land of the Dead was more like Coco-esque thing. All the spirit of the dead person will be there. It was more like afterlife, they will be there "living". So, SunMi will be fine there. And it's definitely a hint in the laat scene that OG brought his suitcase and his monkey statue there, so he will live there from now on. He could find SunMi anywhere in that land because he gave her one of his eye.

I watched this show because of creative moments, and the actors and acting. I never found myself emotionally invested in any of them.  Should have been titled "Love Bracelet" that is what the entire show came down to.

The Hong sisters needed in my opinion to either make this an epic story and drop the silliness and show more real angst, sacrifice and wretched longings at the end, leaving the deity to remain in his secluded mansion - or just be really light and happy go lucky love conquers all at the end.   Instead they were half-assed - just hung out in the middle of things.  Left us dangling. And I thought - who really cares anyway? Was this Pollyanna girl all that worth it? Kind of wishy washy ending. Not really happy I invested the time. Good effort by the actors though, to give meaning to a pretty nebulous plot.

I think what made the ending frustrating was the sudden amnesia and amount of time spend on flashbacks. SO much more plot could of happened during that time frame if they took out that part. SOG driving on the road to the UNDERWORLD is not enough closure serve the justice those previous 19 episodes.

MaWang found his son. His wife became a flower. That's some happy ending on MaWAngs part. BUT our main? Not even a goodbye kiss. The main female protagonist just fades away with a note from hong sister SJ's cue to exit. I must add that I wished Hong sister could have expanded on the eye about SOG sharing his other eye.

Alice, PK, CEO, Ma secretary didn't really have an ending, they just posed. Buja goodbye was slappy. Like what is that?

I know hong sister can do better, they have. Master's Sun ended with the couple coming to conclusion that they would never be a normal pair. Greatest Love had an adorable ending with the "recharge your batteries" . In My Girlfriend is Gumiho, miho survived with one tail and the drama ended on the sweetest note ever. THEN HWAYUGI ENDED with SOG on the road. LIKE COME ON!

I refrain my previous opinion that killing off the mains and having them meet up in the Underworlds would have been more satisfying than what we have.

OG finally allows SM to try to take the geumganggo off him.

OG: There’s something you haven’t told me, isn’t there? Are you sure that you were the one who liked me by yourself, and so you chased me around? (snaps his fingers and sends down a shower of star candy) I think the one who liked someone enough to event plant a star in the skies was me. What happened?
SM: You were like that because of the geumganggo. It wasn’t real. That’s why I came to take it off you. If that goes away, then your pain will go away as well.
OG: Okay. Fine. Then go ahead and take it off.
(SM tries to take off the GGG, but fails.)
OG: It’s not coming off.
SM: Why isn’t it coming off? I was the one who put it on you! They said that I was the only one who could take it off.
OG: You were wrong. Are you sure you understood it properly? Are you sure that the reason I’m hurting is because of feelings generated by this thing?! (indicating the GGG) Are you sure that it can be removed?!
SM: I don’t know. Actually, I don’t know either. Since I’ve never seen an instance of how you really felt without the geumganggo. Whether you hurting is really you hurting, or whether it’s fake hurting because of the geumganggo, I actually don’t know.
OG: You don’t even properly know, but you were chattering that you would take it off me or whatever?
SM: Because I believed that. That if that disappeared, I believed that the way you felt about me would also disappear.
OG: Anyway, you’ve failed. Since you couldn’t take this off. (sighs) The day is almost over. Go back safely. (disappears)
SM: Why won’t the geumganggo come off?

I just feel like ep 20 is very disconnected from the 19 eps i have watched

what's with the grandma

saying  "the fate can be change"

I thought she would hold a very strong role in this matter.

so does  the Heron who purposedly called OG toc warn him and the clue  about the baby etc

what actually made Hong sisters wrote such lousy script for the last ep? It doesn't make any sense

their drama always become stagnant in the middle part but their last ep always manage to save their dramas.

this amnesia thing is so unnecessary with lots of flash back too  and no closure for everyone. Poor Sunmi ... she must be thinking "wth am i doing?"

After SM fails to remove the GGG, OG goes to MW in frustration.

MW: You weren’t able to take it off?
OG: That woman wasn’t able to take it off. There was noting that she knew properly!
MW: It’s because your memories haven’t been all pieced together yet that you can’t take it off.
OG: I’ve remembered a lot of this and that! I felt sorry towards her, and I had been happy with her. I remember that. But, it just keeps hurting.
MW: Of course, it hurts. It can’t hep but hurt. That woman had died. Among the pieces of your memory, the most important piece is that one. Son Oh Gong, if you’ve come this far, then go to the end. If you find that, then you’ll be able to take off the geumganggo.

(flashbacks and voiceovers)
OG voiceover during flashback of when he hid it: The knife that I have to use to kill Sam Jang should not come back out into the world.
White Egret voiceover: Please lend me that knife. Now, I want to end it all. Without that, continuing to live here by myself is too painful.
SM voiceover: If one disappears and one is left behind alone, I think the one remaining will be sadder. It will hurt more. The time left to live will be relentlessly long.
SM during flashback of her death: Because of the geumganggo, I feel reassured. So that when you remain by yourself, love won’t remain as well. That’s a relief.

This is the last of the remaining scenes that I had not translated earlier. Since I had already translated the four final clips of episode 20, I won't repeat them. Though if anyone is looking to read them in sequence of the episode, they are posted to pages 273 and 274.

I suppose ultimately once I got over my dislike for the ending, I decided the episode itself wasn't that bad. It's just that it didn't have the kind of closure that I wanted for the OTP. So, in the end, it came down to whether I had faith that OG will get his woman or not. I have to imagine that the Mokey King as determined, persistent, fearless, and tricky as he is, will ultimately get what he wants and be reunited with his SM. I just wish that I could have seen even a hint of that as part of this ending.

While it would be fantastic to have a season 2 of this drama, the reality is that it's hard to reassemble the entire cast for a season 2. And, rather than having new actors play the same roles, I would rather have been happy with this cast finishing this story in a way that I could feel joy with.

And actually, I felt a bit saddened by the bgm as OG is driving to the Land of the Dead. It's so clearly signaling that we are supposed to be happy and excited along with OG that he now has a purpose to accomplish, that of getting his woman back. However, I didn't feel happy and excited, so it struck a jarring note instead. Oh well.

Anyway, I came back to the thread to post the scene clip translations since others might be curious about what the scenes are like, and possibly have a better reaction to them than I might have. However, now my work on this thread is done, so unless there are any questions, or requests for translations of scenes that don't have a clip, I'll say goodbye again. Hope to see everyone on another drama thread, hopefully one that won't break my heart with an open ending. Thanks for making this such a great thread to be have been a part of. :)

@briseis I really want to know your opinion on the plot and your analysis... the story had a really good start but it stoped making that much sense little by little midway. I mostly followed it for our otp and LSG charisma. I also have complain how SM character was written... I preferred SM requesting to see SOG for one more day not the petty heaven figures do it for the sake of SOG be happy and free.

Thank you for all your hard work!

.....

I was thinking and we never found out who the grandma/peddler really was. She just disappeared again. And what happened to her statement that OG could change heavens plans? If this drama had a message it seems to be the heavenly realm sucks.

Are there any dramas/manwha/blog posts explain or show the underworld? Cause I just keep picturing greek mythology or Coco-type scenes or the halls of the dead from The Silmarillion and stuff like in Arang and the magistrate when she crossed the river in the boat....

at the very least i thought this would end like Arang and the magistrate. I think they ended up in heaven together eventually, right? that would have made more sense and happier ending for everyone. *sigh* I still can't bring myself to even listen to the ost bc it reminds me of the short, happy moments they had. I feel pity for JSM bc she had such a lonely life and for her ot finally find someone who loved her and have it taken away from her in a short amount of time really sucks. Stupid heavens.

Have you seen the movie that was released this year? Alnong the gods: two worlds ( I think this was the title) where a fireman dies and he is escorted by two gods to pass underworld and he has to pass 7 gates I think. If he pass all seven he becomes deity or incarnate something like that. So in the movie they show underworld. I think in the drama they meant something like that

Spoiler

Arang ended with both of them reincarnated children but they had not drunk the water that would wipe their memories.

at least in the end scene they should just show us that he already found seon mi she is sitting in the car beside him . or he is at the netherworld and he saw seon mi and they gave each other a assuring glance like that :bawling:

You're welcome. Hope the scene translations are enough to tide you over until subs are out.

The grandmother/peddler is a goddess. While they don't come out and specifically say it, it's inferred a number of times, including when the grandson asks Soo Bo Ri whether SB isn't just an errand boy for his grandmother to which SB responds in a defensive manner indicating that the grandmother is a higher ranked deity than SB.

And, technically, between SM and OG, they did change the fates. SM insisted that OG not be the one to kill her, circumventing both the death bell and heaven's intent of having the Sam Jang's protector be the one to also kill the Sam Jang at the critical moment. I think it was good that OG not be the one to kill SM, or the guilt may have never brought him back from being shattered.

And, with the open ending, OG is supposed to be able to find SM again, especially since he gave her one of his special eyes that can see through anything and everything.

But, yes, heaven does rather suck.

The source material for this drama, although the writers strayed really far from it, is a Buddhist/Taoist fable called Journey to the West. There are English translations of the fable, though it is really long.

And, the mythology is definitely not the Christian mythology with it's tradition of monotheism plus a heaven/hell which rewards/punishes penitents and sinners. It is closer to Greek mythology or even Norse mythology with their pantheons of fallible deities of various powers and classes, not the various immortal beings and near immortal demi-gods.

In terms of the translations of this drama, one of the hardest parts is to try to choose that doesn't serve as triggers for the monotheistic religious traditions, even if the words translate as such. For instance, Ma Wang which is the name Koreans use for the Devil as well as the use of Lucifer doesn't actually imply that MW is himself the fallen archangel Lucifer in the Christian tradition. In the same spirit, while Son Oh Gong is actually a deity already, albeit one who has been temporarily barred from entering heaven, Ma Wang, PK, Frosty, etc. are considered demons, but not necessarily evil or the minions of the Devil. Rather, they are immortal beings who don't really have an equivalent in the Christian tradition, and they may interact with humans, not necessarily to the benefit of the humans. @Zelda posted a write up of the various kinds of spirit, both evil and non-evil who are characters in this drama that was good. Unfortunately, I'm not sure of which page that was on.

It's more similar to the world in Arang and the Magistrate, though that actually had more Animism and Folk Religion elements to it than JttW.

my friend say, TVN drama , the ending usually not like audience prediction ahahahaha, if we want watch happy ending its on KBS TV

i think hong sister still stick to the original story of chinese odyssey, chinese odyssey from 1-3 all is open ending, maybe because the genre is fantasy so the writer want us to have our own imagination with the ending

but i realize, did all the WOMAN character in this drama DIE ?????

- princess fan

-buja

- alice

- summer fairy

-samjang

ahhahahaha hwayugi really make all woman die

There was something I was curious about that I don’t know ever got answered. When SM came to that hidden place to free OG when she was a kid, why was he punished to stay in that mountain area in the first place? It was briefly mentioned he was once betrayed but that’s as last I learned. Was it a lover or a family member? What was that story?
