What do you guys think about Ji-An liking DH? She’s said it a lot in the show, others even said it - Joon Young, Jung Hee, Yoon Hee. Do you think she’s meant it in a platonic way? Like just genuinely liking a person for who they are.

Although by the end, I think JA’s feelings developed romantically - seeing the way he was looking at DH. Ive just thought about this because of a recent comment Ive seen in dramabeans. @justamom Id love your opinion :).

Im really enjoying these translations so please keep them coming. Two weeks on and it seems Im still not over this drama.

This has nothing to do with My Ahjussi but I'll insert something about grandma being deaf so you won't boo me off for posting this.

So, on some dramas we get a person who has some kind of disease that affects one of the senses. In this case grandma was deaf. We don't know how she became deaf. If she was born that way. If some disease caused the deafness. Or maybe an accident or illness or even a beating by KI's father could have caused it. I think the showcasing of the sign language was great and JA being able to have the speakers on and listen to DH without grandma knowing was also an interesting. I don't know if JA would have listened to DH at home even with headphones on if grandma could hear. (There was a Jdorama that was very popular where the main female character was using sign language. The title had 'twinkling stars' or '1000 stars' in it. It even had a sequel).

You could see the emotion of concern and caring whenever grandma signed to JA. And you could see the frustration, fatigue but also love and caring when JA signed to grandma. And that unforgettable scene when JA told grandma that she was so glad/happy to have someone like DH in her life. The signing, speaking, crying and facial expressions. Wow.

So, now to the off topic part of this post. This is particularly for @justamom and @africandramalover (I know @justamom is checking in but @africandramalover are you still reading?) I am an eyecare provider so I hate it when some characters are told that they have a certain eye disease that can be treated when in reality with the disease they have nothing can be done to save or regain vision. Or when someone is told that their vision can't be saved when a simple procedure can actually save their sight. So, if you decide that one of your characters will have an eye problem that will or won't be sight threatening I am offering my knowledge so that you get things right. I'll be your script consultant for all eye related matters.

I was surprised that only KH had glasses in the family. YH used readers sometimes. The chairman had glasses that didn't fit right. And the other director, the slimy one (I don't know his name) he probably needed them since he worked so hard looking up dirt on everybody.

Okay, now back to regular programming. Sorry for the off-topic post. More MA matters please.

I thought the first essay, on love, was so beautifully written.

Here's my attempt at translating it:

We fall in love because of our flaws. When I know your flaws, and you know mine, and what we know becomes connected, your flaws become my pain and mine become yours, it becomes an invaluable, precious love between two people. The kind of love that will never, ever end and can never be severed. That is Dong Hoon and Ji An's love. This love will most naturally lead one to desire contact with the other person's body. But this is very different from normal sexual desires. Yes, normal people desire physical contact for various reasons. But why is it not so easy for us to agree to physical contact with the one we love?

If we look at Dong Hoon's misconception of love, he seems to think that his love for Ji An stems from how she helps him overcomes his shortcomings. Ji An, to him, is the only person who can make up for his shortcomings and understand his suffering. Dong Hoon plays the same role for Ji An, but more than helping her overcome her shortcomings, the one who brings personal strength to overcome herself is Ji An. And that makes Dong Hoon eternally grateful towards her. When Dong Hoon extends his hand to her at the end and holds her hand tightly, that could very well be the first time that he faces Ji An and her flaws and exposes his vulnerability to her. Rather than saying it is for Ji An, it is a reflex action stemming from his own hunger (desire). And in Ji An's expression while holding his hand we seem to see a shy smile evading that desire.

Undeniably, both have come to stand up on their own. Undeniably, both have also come back to each other, never to part again. Will they get married? That's unknown. Is marriage the greatest expression of love?

@rellea not sure I understood everything correctly especially in the 2nd para so please do correct if I made any mistakes!

My heart went into serious withdrawal mode again after reading this piece:cry:.  I am never getting off on how much I missed My Ajusshi. Thank you for translating @justamom. How come the DC folks never openly supported this duo during the broadcast of My Ajusshi?  @mujay is right, it would have been nice if the Soompiers would have known they also had the same thoughts. Surely people outside from Soompie loved to ridicule us for being "shippers" but I guess the final episode really made the DC folks changed their mind about the love story of Jian and Dong Hoon.

That handshake was pure electricity with the camera zooming. A beginning of something new. DH's boyish smile and Jian's shyness but determination to see him again. It was enough for me to read between the lines that their love was meant to be and would continue to thrive because they had been through the hardest struggles together, so everything else was a piece of cake after the time jump. Those two will eventually live a happy life together. There is no other option for them except each other. No other woman can stir fire into DH's heart like Jian, and no other man can make Jian care or even make her calm down like DH.

Is marriage the greatest expression of love? It does not matter. People that wants to get married there is nothing wrong with it. But in my opinion, two people don't need to sign a piece of paper just to show their commitment and love for each other. Those marital vows will not prevent a person from lying, cheating, or leave their spouse. DH and Jian already have a strong internal force, a solid foundation built on loyalty, trust, love, and sharing each other's pain. A solid foundation that can withstand the harsh external force.

Their bond is really something special. When DH kept saying that JA should call him when her grandmother dies, I assumed he meant he would just come to the funeral. I had no idea he meant he would be there for her, take care of all the stressful details, be her pillar when grief has broken her down and she can’t function. It was so unbelievably touching, and it just blew me away. They say you find out who really loves you and cares about you in times of great need and tragedy, and he definitely loves and cares for her.

Besides the wonderfully warm handshake between them, I really liked that they each looked back at each other while they were walking away from each other. When two people decide to break up or never see each other again, they tell themselves to not look back when they walk away from each other. That’s because they have to move on and forget the past. No regrets, and no more thinking about that person or what might have been. But DH and JA both looked back. They are definitely seeing each other again.

I started my re-watch in earnest last night.  A few things I noticed in first episode and beginning part of second episode:

1. After the scene at Sang Hoon's daughter's wedding, after his mom left the wedding hall, DH took out his cell phone, checked his message, and looked upset.  The scene immediately changed to Yoen Hee and Joon Young hugging by the water (very beautifully shot).  His wife's choosing to be away on such an important family event seemed to really bother him, and so it kind of explained the next scene at the kitchen where he only grunted a few words when she asked him how the party was.

2. I don't think I ever knew who reported the bribe.  Does anyone know who gave the tip?

3. When DH was dragged into the elevator by the two men in suits, that was the first time THE BREATH made its appearance.  Someone upstairs already pointed this out, but his bears repeating.

4. The epilogue of episode 1 shows Ki Hoon and Sang Hoon discussing their ajusshi town.  Sang Hoon said something about the ajusshi in his town won't be able to run away with women because he would kill them.  Not to worry bro, Dong Hoon would never leave that town even after he found a girl.  Then SH went on to say a few words about how everything would be easy to understand, that when you eat ramen, it just means you're eating ramen.  Then Ki Hun replied of course it just meant eating ramen, what else could it mean?  Of course we now know eating could mean a lot more than just eating.

4.  As excellent as IU was, there were early parts where her greenness showed.  An obvious one was right after she brought the bribe money to Kwang Il's office.  When she left the loan office, at the top of the stairs, just before she looked down at the cars, her expressions were rather blank and I had no idea what she was thinking until people explained that she got concerned because the loan sharks figured out it was stolen money.

That's all for now.

From the pictures and the post, it seems like something about how ki hoon always had an idea that Ji An has preoccupied dong hoon's mind for quite some time.

The drama is over, but there was still one scene I was curious about--the driving scene with Yura and Kihoon.

Was the reason for Donghoon's sadness... really Yoonhee's unfaithfulness?

Two days after the results for the directorial position and the party at Junghee's... We have the driving scene with Yoora and Kihoon.

"Don't laugh. Our hyung is sad."

"Why is he sad?"

"When that guy is sad, he's really sad.

"Today, in order to join his sorrow, I have to break up with you."

*note: the phrase "join his sorrow" has the connotation of feeling the same sorrow/pain as the person in question.

Might the fact he says that he needs to break up with Yoora to join DH's sorrow mean that Donghoon broke up with someone (also read as separated with)? Here, he says that in order to join Donghoon's sorrow, he must not kiss Yoora, so is the cause of Donghoon's sadness really divorce? That's a little strange.

It seems like the pain Kihoon says he will take part in is not because the brothers know about Yoonhee's affair but because of Jian's departure.

We can be certain of this by re-examining episode 14.

Junghee says "The one she doesn't hate isn't you guys--the one she doesn't hate is our Donghoon."

Yoonhee, Donghoon, Kihoon, Sanghoon's faces all stiffen knowingly.

And although right after the talk of Jian leaving, they all shout "Hugye!" and excitedly clink glasses.. Donghoon's expression is that of a man who has lost everything. On the happy day that he was made a director, Donghoon is sad. Just as Kihoon told Yura, like Pavlov's conditional reflex, when Donghoon is sad Kihoon also becomes sad.

They send their mother off, and Jaechul suddenly asks, "Why did that girl quit?"

Donghoon goes inside without answering but Kihoon, upset, puts out his cigarette.

Let us go back to the car scene from episode 15.

Kihoon takes Yura home and returns to his house. Sanghoon is outside. Kihoon suddenly takes out a cigarette and holds it. Sanghoon asks again, "Why did that girl quit?" It must have been bothering Sanghoon as well.

"I don't know! Since when does that guy ever give a proper answer!" Kihoon answers agitatedly.

Kihoon may have known since long ago how Donghoon felt about Jian.

When Donghoon received a message from Jian, Kihoon had encouraged him "send her a reply/contact her".

In the last episode, he asked DH whether he was still in contact with Jian and wondered frustratedly "Why doesn't she contact you!!?" I don't think this scene was put in without reason.

Kihoon knows at once when his brother is in pain. He was also the first one to find out about Yoonhee's affair.

Kihoon already knew that Donghoon and Jian had become essential existences to one another.

And I'm not sure if I conveyed the humor properly, but I just thought this was funny:

title: Jian completely ignored Donghoon's invitation

In the last episode, in the scenes before the ending scenes, Team 3 says that they want to have a meal with Jian...

DH: I'm a CEO now (proud). Come over some time. Song Gwajang, Kim Daeri, Hyungyu are all there.

JA: .......

JA: I'll buy you a meal. I want to buy "you" something delicious.

(JA: Just the two of us...)

@rellea  refers to episode 15 after 3rd brother Kihoon and actress friend Yoora.  At that point they already went to the directorship impromptu party at Jung Hee's bar so the knew that Ji-an has left the area.  Ki hoon also knows lawyer wife cheated on 2nd big brother and that big brother is very sad.  Ki Hoon loves his brother a great deal eventhough he prentends not to.  So  he felt guilty that he can enjoy some happiness with actress Yoora.  so he told her lets break up for 3 days then 2 then no break up!   There was no talk of any divorce or separation at that point.  In fact in the whole story that word never comes up.... we just knows from inference in episode 16.

so Ki hoon just feels sad because his 2nd brother is sad.. and he thinks it has to do with the wife's infidelity.

Of course Ji-an would rather have a quiet meal with Engineer Dong Hoon where they can just glance, and speak a little while express themselves in their unique nonverbal ways,...rather than a boisterous dinner with the 4 engineers!.... What if one of them asks her out for a date?!!    Engineer Dong Hoon may choke on his beer!!!!!

@sadiesmith   We never know who sends the message about the bribery.  but of course it has to do with the shady company that supplies temporary workers.  CEO through his henchmen the horse face director must have asked them to alert the company security about the bribery to Director Park.

When it comes to eating, especially some thing fast and simple like Ramen, men usually just eat and be done with it.... women like to drag it with conversation in between.   Big brother is upset with life, upset with himself and his wife, and dream of a society for Ajusshi, where they just exist without involvement with women!.... Long behold, his straight lace younger brother already starts the journey that leads him to form a highly unorthodox relationship with a young, cold girl, with an unsavory past!

I don't know how the Korean fans do it...night after night of superb analysis and profound essays on the show! I found this gem tonight

It is so long I won't even attempt to translate it but maybe @rellea or @chickfactor can help summarise because some of it is beyond me!

"So we say Park Dong Hoon likes Lee Ji An"

http://gall.dcinside.com/board/view/?id=mymister&no=54343&page=1

Some of the things mentioned:

- Yeon Hee's shame and realisation that Ji An and her cannot share Park Dong Hoon

- The scene of Dong Hoon dropping Ji An off with his wife at the police station. For him, he's avoiding his feelings for Ji An by "dumping" her with his wife. But look at how the camera pans out to show him watching Ji An as she goes in, and the troubled expression on his face --> anyone have a gif for this?

- Rebuts the essay that @sadiesmith shared earlier about Dong Hoon crying over Ji An's absence. No, he was crying about how pathetic his life is (what I said!!)

- So we say Park Dong Hoon likes Lee Ji An. How about the opposite case? It's way too easy to argue. There's not even any point to arguing. Because Park Dong Hoon is the kind of man who will never say "I like you" even till the very end. He can't say it, to the extent that (hearing it) made him hit someone in the back of the head.

I will PM you! @h2ogirl has also offered her help and I will be quite busy from next week onwards so your offer is much appreciated! I actually just activated a wordpress and Gmail account so let's take this forward! @sadiesmith I am assuming you are in. Will need ideas on

- how to organise content @tiger457_stv any ideas for a content tree?

- help pick and select the best posts

- design and wordpress formatting help

I also just saw a post on DC Inside that the pre order for the Director's Cut is up till 6th June and -gasp- is likely to include the original script for those who order and pay by then @africandramalover did you hear that?? That alone is worth the price for me....apparently it will also include deleted scenes!

Now let me figure out how to order....has anyone done this before??

@mylovelystar I can't find the original post on the Director's Cut, can you help?

Edit: so I just realized I saw the price wrongly. It’s USD$230. What???? Why is it so expensive??

@justamom that’s a hefty price.  For that, it should have proper options for subtitles in several languages. I want to be able to watch it again with a better translation.  I do think it had a lot of mistranslations that resulted in a lot of confusion.  Aside from the lines of Dong Hoon at the cafe, there was his line to JiAn right before she asked him for a hug one last time. His line was exactly the same as when he told her she was a good person but the subtitles indicated otherwise.  I can’t recall what it showed but it definitely wasn’t “you’re a good person”.  I hope tVN realizes that this drama has an international fan base and they would consider them as a viable market for the Director’s Cut. :)

I feel so sad reading Jeong Hee's caption.

My Ahjussi has become our fond memories!

Hugye Hugye Hugye Chan-ul Piuge! (Empty our glasses)

At last, reuniting with the much missed My Ahjussi people

While eating sea snails at a restaurant just like Jeong Hee's in a restaurant in Pyeongchangdong, we created yet another fond memory together.

No one could bear to leave, so the place was lively until morning.

Be well (farewell) for now.

@justamoon yes it's really expensive because it's preorder plus bluray and the contents are very special too, I remember it's the same price as the other drama suspicious partner that I loved which I really felt bad I didn't order.
