Found this subbed version of the highlight video.  Thanks to whoever subbed it.  So they are showing us right away how different the two people are yet how similarly weary they are.  And just as she probably thinks poorly of him for his age (based on what I remember from the script reading), he also seems to dismiss her outright.  I love this; it reminds me of the early bickering stage in a rom-com before the characters fall for each other.  This is much deeper, of course, right?

Here's the latest released highlight.  There are so many versions and I am starting to lose track, but each contains some different scenes.  This one seems to focus a little more on Park Dong Hoon.  I also think he and his wife lost their child to death or something because in a previous trailer, there is a scene where his wife is crying, and there is a family picture in the background with father, mother, and child.  No wonder he is a hot mess.  I now know for sure there won't be a romance between him and IU.  He needs to find happiness with his wife again.

Very intriguing.  Wonder if IU is going to be attracted to this bad boy.  In any case, her ship with Jang Ki Young is definitely dead.

 

I have very good news!  It looks like this drama will be recapped over at Dramabeans, although whether it's a full length recap of every episode or just a weekly weecap remains to be seen.  And drama blog bah-doo.com also plans to recap.  Yay for more places to discuss this show.  

 

An article came out today talking about the director's vision to tell through this drama the story about an average man.  The hero is neither a chaebol nor a genius, not a lawyer or a doctor, and he does not have any supernatural power either.  But just the same, he and others like him have their own stories worthy of telling.  Heck, I won't be surprised if the director chose Lee Sun Kyun, who many consider to be below average in looks, precisely because of his average-ness, which hopefully makes him relatable.  I can't understand the whole article, but hopefully some kind soul would translate the whole thing properly.  Paging @Vhttp://breaknews.com/sub_read.html?uid=566800&section=sc4&section2=

It would be a lie if anyone said they don't sense anything, especially without subs and only hearing the nice OST in the background and their voices in the foreground (and I am sure the fangirls would be screaming already had the actor been a top 20-something star in the exact same scenes.)   But because of the age gap, I don't dare think too far with the romantic vibe; I see it as two people obviously having deep affection for each other and being strangely drawn to each other.

Reasons to watch: This is the new series from PD Kim Won-seok of Signal and Misaeng and writer Park Hae-young of Oh Hae-young Again, so there’s no way my expectations aren’t sky high for their first collaboration. It’s described in very generic terms as a healing drama, about a man in his forties and a woman in her twenties, each struggling to survive in their own way.

Lee Seon-kyun plays one of three brothers from an ordinary family who is neither successful nor unsuccessful, and doesn’t seem too happy about anything in life. IU is a young woman who’s lived a much harsher life, whose days seem to be filled with tears, scars, and bruises. She’s extremely bristly towards others, probably as a protective measure; in the teasers she asks for Lee Seon-kyun to hate her so that she can hate him back, which must be how she prefers most relationships to go. This drama is definitely going for gritty realism, but I’m hoping it’ll be uplifting in the same way that Misaeng examined the harshness of ordinary life to remind us that we all share the same struggles.

TVN just updated this show's page with a ton more pictures and info.  There is a character description page for every member of Park Dong Hoon's family.  So he does have a son, 12 years and studying in the US.

 

 

박동훈 (45세) / 이선균

건축구조기술사. 순리대로 인생을 살아가며, 절대 모험을 하지 않는 안전제일주의. 

공부는 건축사보다 많이 해놓고, 그들의 그늘에 가려 사는 구조기술사를 선택한 것도 그래서인지도 모른다. 그게 마음 편하니까. 눈에 띄는 게 불편하고 나대는 재주 없는 성품.

“이만하면 됐다.”

한직인 안전진단 팀으로 밀려났어도, 대학 후배가 대표이사로 머리 위에 앉아있어도, 이만하면 됐다. 아내는 동훈의 이 말에 차가운 얼굴을 했다. ‘그래. 넌 됐다 쳐라. 난 아니다.’라며 아이를 낳자마자 사법고시에 붙었고, 아들도 만리타향으로 조기 유학 보냈다. 그래도 아내가 돈을 잘 버니 이만하면 됐다. 인생 내리막길을 달리고 있는 형과 동생이 있지만, 여전히 즐겁다고 낄낄대는 속없는 인간들이라 고맙고 다행이다. 그래, 이만하면 됐다.

억척스럽고 생활력이 강하다.
품을 떠나본 적 없는 막내 기훈이만 치우면 될 줄 알았더니, 큰 아이 상훈이가 늘그막에 빈털터리로 여편네에게 쫓겨나 집으로 들어왔다. 마흔 넘은 아들 둘이 집에 있으니 열이 뻗쳐 욕 한바가지 퍼붓다가도 삼시세끼 따뜻한 밥은 해 먹이는 엄마.

죽기 전에 아들들 제 짝이랑 우애 좋게 사는 것을 보고 죽어야 눈이 감길 텐데. 집안의 철부지 아들 둘이 추레하게 혼자 늙을까 걱정이 태산. 사실 생전 말없이 묵묵히 뒤치다꺼리 하는 둘째 동훈을 가장 안쓰러워한다.

 

박상훈 (49세, 동훈의 형) / 박호산

"반세기를 살았는데 기억에 남는게 없어... 만들라구, 기억에 남는 기똥찬 순간."

가장 먼저 중년의 위기를 맞은 맏형.

22년 다닌 회사에서 잘리고, 장사 두 번 말아먹어 신용불량자 되고, 여기저기 몸 성한데도 없는데다, 매일 이혼 서류에 도장 찍으라고 악악대는 아내까지. 인생 초고속 내리막길.

그래도 여유와 웃음을 잃지 않는다. 여전히 술은 맛나고, 평생 술값 책임지겠다는 동생에, 평생 심심하지 않게 구박해주는 막내 동생이 옆에 있으니까, 그리고 욕은 해대지만 삼시세끼 뜨신 밥해주시는 노모도 계시니까. 인생에 돈은 없지만 재미는 있다.

늘 웃는 상훈이지만 자신의 인생이 맥없이 저무는 건가 대한 고민은 있다. 자신에게도 꿈이 있었던가. 그래서 결심한 인생에 적어도 일주일은 영화처럼 살아보기. 우리 삼형제가 검은 슈트, 검은 라이방, 검은 벤츠 타고 푸른 바다가 보이는 호텔 스위트룸에! ‘크크크, 생각만 해도 멋지다!’

 

박기훈 (42세, 박동훈의 동생) / 송새벽

"내가 막 사는 것 같아도 오늘 죽어도 쪽팔리지 않게! 비장하게 살어."

한때는 천재로 추앙받던 영화계의 샛별, 현재는 형인 상훈과 함께 형제청소방의 동업자. 오랜 꿈을 포기했지만 자신에게만큼은 당당하고 싶은 막내. 욱하는 성격의 소유자.

스무 살에 찍은 독립영화로 깐느까지 갔는데, 첫끗발이 개끗발이라고 20년째 영화감독 데뷔 중. 오래 공들인 시나리오를 넘긴 선배 감독이 연봉 오백에 또 조연출하라던 날, 울분에 차 선배에게 주먹을 날리고 뛰쳐나와 자빠지는 다마스를 본 순간, 오래도록 꿈꿔온 영화판을 깡그리 단념했다.

그렇게 먼지 뒤집어쓰고 계단 청소를 하는데, 첫 장편 데뷔작이 될 뻔했던 영화의 여주인공을 만난다. 연기를 더럽게 못해 죽어라 구박한, 급기야는 기훈의 영화를 엎어지게 만든 여자. 그런데 그녀는 기훈을 반가워한다. 이럴 사이가 아닌데. 그리고 해맑은 얼굴로 기훈에게 망해줘서 고맙단다. 화가 뻗치다가도 자꾸만 자신을 챙기는 행동이 수상하다. 얘 뭐니?

 

강윤희 (42세, 동훈의 아내) / 이지아

“당신 보면 짠하다가도 울화통 터져. 밖에 나가서 좀봐! 딴 남자들 당신 나이에 어떻게 하고 사나 좀 보라구”

아이 낳고 돌 되던 해에 사법고시에 패스할 정도로 의욕적인 여자. 직업은 변호사.

박동훈과는 대학 때부터 오래 사귀었고, 사람 됨됨이가 좋아 결혼했다. 그런데 이 남자, 인생이 너무 빤하다. 여자 아무리 잘 나봤자 남편 평판 밑이라고, 아무리 애써봤자 자신은 그저 평범한 만년부장의 아내. 이렇게 살고 싶지 않은데...

다그쳐도 봤지만 소용없다. 그 어느 곳에도 마음 쏟지 못하고, 여기는 자기 세상 아니라는 듯 멍한 얼굴. 그러면서도 가족에 대한 의무는 성실하게 다 하는 답답한 인간. 짠하다가도 울화통이 터진다. 애초부터 그의 인생에 자신은 1순위가 아니었다. 자신으로 인해 절대 행복해질 수 없는 사람. 그래서 동훈을 포기했다.

 

조애련 (45세, 박상훈의 아내) / 정영주

여자 나이 45세, 거울보기도 싫어지는 타이밍. 이럴 때 돈 많은 중년들은 젊음 유지 보다는 고가의 명품으로 품위 유지에 신경 쓰는 쪽으로 넘어가는데, 돈이 없으니 속수무책. 가장 많은 돈이 필요한 나이에 빈털터리가 됐다.

남편이란 인간은 다 망해먹고 울어도 시원찮을 판에, 매일 형제들하고 술 마시고 낄낄낄. 징글징글한 삼형제, 사귀지 않고서야 그렇게 매일 만날 순 없다. 매일 갈라서겠다고 악쓰다가도 집안 행사는 꼬박꼬박 챙기는 책임감 있는 맏며느리.

 

지석 (12세)

동훈과 윤희의 아들. 홀로 미국에 조기 유학을 떠난 상태이다.
