A TAXI DRIVER Triumphs at 54th Daejong Film Awards
ANARCHIST FROM COLONY Picks Up 5 Grand Bells

The 54th Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Awards took place in Seoul on the evening of Wednesday, October 25th and handed their top prize to JANG Hun’s Gwangju drama A Taxi Driver, the year’s biggest box office hit with over 12 million viewers. The film also earned a prize for Best Planning.

 

Yet the night’s biggest winner was surely the Colonial Era drama Anarchist from Colony, which earned a total of five prizes, including Best Director for LEE Joon-ik, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, while CHOI Hee-seo won for both Best Actress and Best New Actress. LEE previously took the director prize for King And The Clown 11 years ago. 

 

HAN Jae-rim’s prosecutor saga The King wasn’t far behind with four awards, as BAE Sung-woo and KIM So-jin won the Best Supporting Actor and Actress Awards for their roles, and the film also triumphed in the Best Screenplay and Best Editing categories.

 

Other multiple award winners included VANISHING TIME: A BOY WHO RETURNED, which earned prizes for Best New Director for UM Tae-hwa and Best Music while action film The Villainess took the prize for Best Cinematography and the Technical Award.

 

SUL Kyung-gu took the Best Actor prize for his role in The Merciless while Best New Actor went to Midnight Runners lead PARK Seo-jun. The Prison won Best Lighting and late actress KIM Young-ae was posthumously given a Special Award.

THE FORTRESS Dominates 37th Korean Film Critics Association Awards
SUL Kyung-gu and NA Moon-hee Take Top Acting Honors

The Korean Film Critics Association announced the winners for its upcoming 37th awards, and it will be the period siege drama The Fortress that walks away with the biggest and most prizes when the show takes place next month. HWANG Dong-hyuk’s austere film earned the awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Music (by famed Japanese composer SAKAMOTO Ryuichi) and Best Cinematography for KIM Jee-yong.

 

The main acting prizes went to actor SUL Kyung-gu for The Merciless while actress NA Moon-hee triumphed for her part in I Can Speak. YOO Hae-jin took Best Supporting Actor for A Taxi Driver and Best Supporting Actress went to The Merciless’ JEON Hye-jin. Best New Actor and Actress went to PARK Seo-jun of Midnight Runners and CHOI Hee-seo of Anarchist from Colony. 

 

The Best New Director Prize went to KANG Yun-sung of the still in theaters THE OUTLAWS and Anarchist from Colony also picked up the Best Screenplay award for HWANG Seong-gu. The Battleship Island earned the Technical Award for art director LEE Hoo-kyoung.

 

The Awards for Independent Film went to documentary filmmaker LEE Young (Troublers) and Jane director CHO Hyunhoon. This year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be bestowed upon cinematographer JEON Jo-myung, who was active for almost 50 years and worked frequently with Korean masters such as KIM Soo-yong and IM Kwon-taek. The FIPRESCI prize went to BONG Joon-ho’s Okja while CHOI Tae-hoon and NAM Yoo-rang earned the Best New Critics prizes.

 

The Association also announced its ten best films of the year, which included A Taxi Driver, The Fortress, Anarchist from Colony, I Can Speak, The Battleship Island, THE OUTLAWS, On the Beach at Night Alone, The Merciless, Missing and Midnight Runners.

 

The ceremony for the 37th Korean Film Critics Association Awards will take place next month on the 9th at the Seoul Press Center.

Hawaii Film Festival Hails 14 from Korea

HIFF Puts Together Broad ‘Spotlight on Korea’ Program

One of the top destinations in the world for Korean films, the Hawaii International Film Festival returns this month and includes a 14-strong delegation from the Far Eastern film-making powerhouse. The 37th HIFF kicked off on November 2nd.

 

The bulk of this year’s Korean selection will be featured in the ‘Spotlight on Korea’ program. The nine titles in the section are JANG Hun’s blockbuster Gwangju drama A Taxi Driver, Hong Sangsoo’s Cannes competition selection The Day After, LEE Won-tae’s period prison drama Man of Will, KIM Bong-han’s 80s-set investigation drama Ordinary Person, KIM Hyung-joo’s port city crime comedy The Sheriff in Town, KIM Hyun-seok’s emotional drama I Can Speak and LEE An-gyu’s women-led gang action drama A Special Lady. 

 

SHIN Su-won’s Busan International Film Festival opener Glass Garden and JUNG Byung-gil’s Cannes midnighter The Villainess will be screened both in the ‘Spotlight on Korea’ and ‘Fantastic Asia’ programs. Other titles include MOON Chang-yong's Becoming Who I Was, the Berlinale-screened film featured in both the ‘Film For Thought’ and ‘Documentaries’ lineups, and KIM Sung-ho’s melodrama Notebook from My Mother in the ‘Eat. Drink. Film.’ section, which premiered in Busan last month.

 

Three shorts from Korea have also made it into the program, including BAE Kyung-heon’s Alone Together, the Grand Prize winner in the Korean shorts competition at the Jeonju International Film Festival this year, SONG Joo-sung’s widely screened Girl at the Door, and Joonha KIM’s A Taxi of Coldness.

Nominees Announced For 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards

On November 6, the Blue Dragon Film Awards revealed the nominations for 15 categories of this year’s ceremony.

 

Films released from October 7, 2016 through October 3, 2017 were eligible, and the final nominees were selected through a survey of film industry experts and netizen votes.

 

In addition to the 15 categories listed below, winners for the Popularity Award, Best Short Film, and Most Viewed Picture will be announced at the ceremony. The 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards will take place at 8:45 p.m. KST on November 25 at Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Palace. The ceremony will be broadcast live via SBS.

“A Taxi Driver” Takes Home 3 Awards, Including Best Picture, At The 2017 Asian World Film Festival

“A Taxi Driver” has come home with three awards from the Asian World Film Festival (AWFF), including the award for Best Picture.

 

The AWFF is a film festival that is in its third year and is held in Los Angeles every year to highlight Asian films ahead of the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. “A Taxi Driver” was one of 16 nominees for Best Picture, 13 of which were also submitted to be considered for the Academy Awards.

 

Song Kang Ho won a special mention award for his excellent acting, described as “dynamic and leaving a lasting impact,” and the movie also won the “Dr. Kim’s He Can Do, She Can Do” award, which was set to be awarded to the production that most respected the value of human dignity.

 

CEO Park Eun Kyung of the production company behind “A Taxi Driver” stated, “The film is one that was made thanks to the hard work of so many people, and we want to thank them all. This is an unforgettable night.”

 

“A Taxi Driver” was the film submitted by Korea to be considered at the upcoming Academy Awards. With the film having already garnered accolades in various film festivals across the world, it will be interesting to see if the film will become Korea’s first movie to be nominated for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Film category.

'A Taxi Driver' wins best picture in Asian World Film Festival

SEOUL, Nov. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean box office smash film "A Taxi Driver" took home three prizes, including best picture, at this year's Asian World Film Festival, which recently closed in Los Angeles, the film's local distributor said Monday.

 

The film also received the "He Can Do, She Can Do, Why Not Me" Humanitarian Award and the Special Mention Award for its lead actor Song Kang-ho with a comment that he showed a "dynamic, intricate and compelling performance."

 

The festival began in 2015 to draw greater recognition to the region's wealth of filmmakers ahead of the United States' film awards season. The 3rd edition of the festival was held from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2.

 

The Korean period drama will represent South Korea in the foreign film category of the 90th Academy Awards, to be held in March.

 

Directed by Jang Hoon, the movie was inspired by the real-life story of a Seoul taxi driver who takes the late German correspondent Jurgen Hinzpeter to the southwestern provincial city of Gwangju for a large amount of money and witnesses the horrors of the bloody military crackdown on the pro-democracy people's uprising of May 1980. Hinzpeter, helped by the taxi driver, becomes the first western reporter to send out footage of the bloodshed.

 

The film sat on the local box office throne for a long time, selling more than 12 million tickets after it opened in August.

‘Merciless,’ ‘King,’ ‘Taxi Driver’ nominated for Blue Dragon awards

“The Merciless,” “The King” and “A Taxi Driver” swept nominations for this year’s Blue Dragon Film Awards, the awards’ organizers said Monday.

 

Nominees for the awards’ 15 categories are selected based on film critics’ and online votes. 

 

Director Byun Sung-hyun’s thriller “The Merciless” has been nominated in nine categories, including best film, best director, best actor and best supporting actor. 

 

The film starring Sol Kyung-gu and Im Si-wan was invited to the Cannes Film Festival’s midnight screening in May. 

 

Han Jae-rim’s political crime thriller “The King” and Jang Hoon’s drama “A Taxi Driver” based on the Gwangju Democracy Uprising were each nominated in eight categories.

 

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s period piece “The Fortress” received nominations in seven categories. 

The nominees for best film are “The Fortress,” “The King,” “The Merciless,” “A Taxi Driver” and Lee Joon-ik’s historical drama “Anarchist From Colony.” 

 

All nominated works are available for viewing in a special screening taking place from Nov. 13-22 at CGV Yeouido.

Blue Dragon Award nominees announced

The 38th Blue Dragon Awards announced its nominees on Monday. 

 

“The Merciless” from director Byun Sung-hyun and starring Seol Kyung-gu and Im Si-wan has been nominated for nine awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

 

“The King” starring Zo In-sung and Jung Woo-sung and “A Taxi Driver” of Song Kang-ho were each nominated for eight categories, and “The Fortress” starring Lee Byung-hun and Kim Yun-seok was nominated for seven awards.

 

All local movies that premiered between Oct. 7, 2016 and Oct. 3, 2017 were eligible as the nominees. 

 

The nominated movies will be screened during a special screening event to be held at CGV Yeouido in western Seoul from Nov. 13 to 22. 

 

The event will take place on Nov. 25 at Grand Peace Hall on the campus of Kyung Hee University in eastern Seoul. SBS will air the ceremony at 8:45 p.m.

"A Taxi Driver," which drew over 10 million viewers in Korea this year, won an award given to the best film at the annual Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles on Sunday.

 

The festival began in 2015 to raise awareness and interest in Asian films ahead of the Golden Globe Awards and the Oscars. This year's festival, which wrapped up last week, offered screenings of some 37 films from 22 countries.

 

"A Taxi Driver" won the award after competing against some 16 films. The film tells the story of a taxi driver who takes a German journalist to Gwangju during the democratic uprising in May 1980, unaware of the impending danger.

A Taxi Driver picked up several awards and accolades at the 3rd edition of Asia World Film Festival. 

 

Director JANG hun’s touching, historical action drama about a Seoul taxi driver who escorts a German correspondent to Gwangju to cover the democracy protests of 1980 won the festival’s Snow Leopard Best Picture Award for best film. In addition, the film was given the “Dr. KIM’s ‘He Can Do She Can Do Why Not Me’ Humanitarian Award” which included a cash prize of $10,000 USD. The festival also gave the film’s lead actor SONG Kang-ho a special mention for his “Dynamic, intricate and compelling performance.”

 

The Asia World Film Festival takes place in Culver City, California and typically limits its selection to films that have either been chosen as Oscar or Golden globe nominees by their respective countries, or that have earned critical acclaim on the festival circuit. The festival was established to strengthen ties between the Asian and Hollywood film industries and to draw greater recognition to Asian filmmakers. This year’s edition was held from October 25th to November 3rd and screened 37 films from 22 countries. 

 

A Taxi Driver has been a hit worldwide. The movie was selected as the opening film for the Korean film festivals of Brussels, Paris, Spain, Frankfurt, and Hungary and picked up the best actor award at the Fantasia International Film Festival (Montreal). Domestically the film has been a blockbuster, having so far sold 12 million tickets and earning major nominations for Korea’s Blue Dragon, Grand Bell, and Buil Film Awards.

THE KING and A TAXI DRIVER Secure Japan Releases
The opening date is April 21st

Two Korean films have secured theatrical releases in Japan. HAN Jae-rim’s political thriller The King is set to open in Japan on March 10th next year. The film revolves around prosecutor Tae-su (ZO In-sung) who meets senior prosecutor Gang-sik (JUNG Woo-sung) and wants to become a king of the world. Released this past January, it surpassed 5.3 million moviegoers in Korea. The movie will be released under the same title in Japan. 

 

JANG Hun’s smash hit A Taxi Driver, the first film to surpass 10 million viewers this year, will also be released in Japan, securing an April 21st release date. The film tells the true story of a Seoul taxi driver (SONG Kang-ho) who takes German reporter Jurgen Hinzpeter (Thomas Kretschmann) to cover the Gwangju Democracy Movement during the Korean government’s media blackout in May 1980. The political drama opened in August of this year and sold 12.18 million tickets in Korea. Moreover, it was chosen as Korea’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Category of the 90th Academy Awards. A Taxi Driver will also have the same title in Japan as in Korea, but will be subtitled ‘a promise across the seas’. 

 

Recently, the Japanese distributors of the two films revealed their posters. The King’s poster features the film’s two main actors while A Taxi Driver’s poster contains its box office results and awards history in Korea. The release of these two films, based on modern Korean history, in Japan, is drawing a lot of attention as many await the reaction from Japanese audiences.

Winners Of The 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards

On November 25, the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards were held at the Kyung Hee University Grand Peace Palace to honor some of the best films and filmmakers of 2017.

 

The ceremony, which was emceed by Kim Hye Soo and Lee Sun Gyun, got off to an unfortunate start when photographers decided to boycott the red carpet. Because of the heavy rain, reporters had asked permission to take photos inside instead of the usual outdoors red carpet but were denied.

 

Some notable winners included EXO’s D.O. for Best New Actor. He was unable to accept the award in person due to his concert but his former co-star and close friend Jo In Sung accepted it in his place. Jo In Sung himself took home a Popular Star Award for his role in “The King.” Later D.O. arrived at the ceremony just in time to present the Best Film award with Shin Ha Kyun and gave thanks for his own award.

 

Big winners of the night included “I Can Speak,” which picked up both a Popular Star Award and Best Leading Actress award for veteran actress Na Moon Hee as well as the Best Director Award, which was presented by American actor Steven Yeun. “A Taxi Driver” was also well-beloved at the awards, winning Best Film, Audience Choice Award, Best Music, and Best Leading Actor for Song Kang Ho.

'A Taxi Driver' wins best picture at Blue Dragon Awards

SEOUL, Nov. 25 (Yonhap) -- "A Taxi Driver," a local box office hit about a pro-democracy uprising in the country, won best picture at the 38th annual Blue Dragon Awards, one of the nation's top two film honors, on Saturday.

 

The movie took home best film and best actor awards during the ceremony held at Kyunghee University in eastern Seoul.

 

Song Kang-ho was honored for his role as the eponymous Seoul taxi driver who takes the late German correspondent Jurgen Hinzpeter to the southwestern provincial city of Gwangju for a large offer of money and there witnesses the horrors of the bloody military crackdown on the pro-democracy people's uprising of May 1980. Hinzpeter, helped by the taxi driver, becomes the first western reporter to send out footage of the bloodshed.

 

The film sat on the box office throne for a long time, selling more than 12 million tickets after it opened in August.

 

Last month, it received the best picture and best planning awards at the 54th annual Daejong Film Awards, the other of the top two film prizes.

 

Na Moon-hee of "I Can Speak" was named best actress, while its helmer Kim Hyeon-seok received best director.

 

The best supporting actor and actress awards went to Jin Seon-gyu for "The Outlaws" and Kim So-jin for "The King."

 

Doh Kyung-soo, better known by his stage name D.O from boy group EXO, and Choi Hee-seo of the film "Anarchist from Colony" were named best new actor and actress, respectively. The best rookie director award went to Lee Hyun-joo of "Our Love Story," while Hwang Dong-hyuk, the writer-director of "The Fortress," won best screenplay.

'A Taxi Driver' wins best film at 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards

South Korea's Oscar entry "A Taxi Driver" bagged the best film at the 38th Blue Dragon Film Awards held on November 25 at the Kyung Hee University Grand Peace Palace in Seoul.

 

"A Taxi Driver" tells the story of a taxi driver played by Korean actor Song Kang Ho who takes a German TV journalist from Seoul to Gwangju to cover the pro-democracy uprising in 1980.

This is the fourth time that the movie has won best film. It previously bagged the award at the 54th Daejong Film Awards, 3rd Asian World Film Festival and 26th Buil Film Awards.

 

Song Kang Ho won Best Actor, defeating Jo In-sung of "The King," Kim Yoon-seok of "The Fortress," Lee Byung-hun of "The Fortress" and Sol Kyung-gu of "The Merciless."

 

"A Taxi Driver" also won Best Music and Audience Choice Award.

 

Despite winning Best Film, "A Taxi Driver" lost the best director award to Kim Hyun Suk of "I Can Speak," which also won Best Actress and Popular Star award, courtesy of Na Moon Hee.

 

The Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Jin Seon Kyu of "The Outlaws" and Kim So Jin of "The King," respectively. Lee Hyun Joo of "Our Love Story" won Best New Director.

 

EXO member D.O won Best New Actor for his role in "My Annoying Brother" while Choi Hee Seo took home the Best New Actress trophy for "Anarchist from Colony."

 

The Best Screenplay went to Hwang Dong Hyuk of "The Fortress" while the Best Cinematography and Lighting were awarded to Jo Hyung Rae and Park Jung Woo of "The Merciless."

 

Lee Hoo Kyung of "The Battleship Island" won Best Art Direction while Shin Min Kyung of "The King" bagged the Best Editing award.

 

Kwon Gwi Duk of "The Villainess" received the technical award while Kwan Eun Mi won Best Short Film for "Hand-Written Poster."

 

Other popular star award winners are Sol Kyung Gu of "The Merciless," Jo In Sung of "The King" and Kim Soo Ahn of "The Battleship Island."
