[Drama 2017] Black 블랙

Sorry for being absent for the whole week, but real life was rather stressful. But I finally found time to catch up and I really liked reading all your theories. Some of them mirror the theories I came up with when watching the episodes unfolding. For now I can really say this show has the big potential to keep me hooked until the end. I even watched the raw for episode 4 already, although I'm not actually having the time for that but I could not wait until tomorrow to watch with subs to get to know what is happening next.

Although I could not catch every detail as I would need subs for that, the 4th episode is really great as it reveals a lot of new information. It's enough to solve certain puzzles but it also brings out new things that will need to be solved within the future episodes.

As now one seems to be recaping live I try to give a short summary of what i could catch while watching raw just now.

 

1. We learn 444 met Haram already before entering Detective Han's body - he was the grim reaper assigned to her ex boyfriend's death, who can't believe that Haram has been right with her prenominations all along when he finds the reapers waiting for him. So 444 first witnessed her abilities the sam time as Detective Han.

 

2. 444 meets with Haram to convince her to stay next to him and help him and doesn't take it to well when she says no. She tells him she's not helping him as she feels responsible for him (Detective Han) almost dying and when he can't accept it she kicks him into his most valuable parts. And it's funny how suprised he is buy the pain - seems to be his first time feeling that.

 

3. Soo Wan is really afraid of whoever is trying to find her and wants to break into into Detective Han's secret cellar - without success. 444 sees her when she tries to leave but doesn't think much of it at first.

 

4. 444 cannot understand why Haram is so reluctant to help him, so he tries to investigae his own (Detective Han's) death circumstances. He finds out that he did not go to the mall to fetch the other guy's mother as Haram assumed but that he went to the neighboring hotel instead (where 444 met him while searching for his missing partner). He tells Haram to convince her it's not her fault, so she agrees to help him but leaves him puzzled when she gets up and leaves again (as she's busy investigating more VVIP's per Man Soo's wish). Before she leaves she gives him their childhood photo, maybe she hopes to stipulate his memories. And 444 really starts to reall some of Detective Han's most recent memories which shocks him a great time as he must assume he turns human after all.

 

5. 444 learns the hard way that someone is trying to kill him (Detective Han) when is is lured into a hospital room where a man with a poisonious injection is waiting for him. They fight and the man injects him the poinson and tries to flee but 444 is able to follow him and almost catch him but the poison starts to knock him out. So 444 is just able to teleport himself back to Detective Han’s home before he looses his consciousness. The other two reapers watch over him while he is knocked out. After that he recalls all the incidents that happened around him and finally connects them. So he get curious about why Soo Wan came out of his cellar. He opens the secret room and finds the walls with pictures and a lot of documents as well as a video tape recording. He puts it into the recorder but than his bell rings. He leaves the cellar but the door is not closing (which for sure will cause problems later on). While he leaves we see the beginning oft he tape – it seems to be Soo Wan’s younger self. She’s saying her name into the camera and starts to open the blouse of her school uniform. It looks like an „audition“ tape for some shady business, most likely porns with minors, and she looks a bit afraid while doing so. I assume we will later learn that the baddies used the recordings to blackmail the girls into more shady stuff.

 

6. Haram is the one ringing 444’s bell. She’s there to ask for his help as she saw the future death of an innocent boy she met while trying to follow one oft he VVIP’s who is police president of the old city she used to live in (that connects to the preview for episode 5). We also learn that this police officer is somehow related to Jin Soo and maybe also her death – so whatever plot or conspirancy is going on – it’s bigger than we thought it is.

 

And with that I'm off to bed as it will be another stressful day tomorrow. See you later chingus

OK, I've just watched Episode 4 with subs, my thoughts so far:

 

• Is it really that simple that she can't see 444 in Moo Gangs body because he's wearing black all the time??? Or is it as I suspect a convenient plot device? Then again the sunglasses do block off the shadows too but they're more technical, like I'm sure since they block UV rays then it would also lead to them blocking certain death rays.. the clothes not so much. 
• 444 is finally interested in what lead to Moo Gang being murdered, albeit it's not because he found a sudden compassion and curiosity in Moo Gangs untimely demise... it's more out of self interest but I'll take what I can get. So he'll be delving into the mysteries surrounding the cowardly detective. I say cowardly, but I'm sure like many of you, I suspect that was all a front to begin with. It all leads back to that incident in Mojin 20 years ago and somehow the insurance company is involved in that too. With Ha Ram involving the younger illegitimate son in things, he'll find out information from inside the company. Will he seek justice though?
• Did anyone catch that Ha Ram's name means blessed by heaven? That's what her father chose to call her, so that means that he had foreknowledge or knew that she was indeed a special baby. So was he indeed a former Grim Reaper like what we suspect or did he have the same abilities thereby passing them on genetically to his daughter? It would explain a lot. 
• I've no doubt once they solve what Moo Gang was researching they'll get to the bottom of the 'cold case' and the mental hospital murder. Interesting they show us the tape with a younger Soo Won taking her clothes off on camera. So the body they found in the first episode with the fake implants, is the person filming her... you can then understand, like @Lady_Fay states, they blackmailed the girls to do all sorts which led to Soo Won changing her identity. So how does that pornographic case tie in with the Time Mart in Mojin.. by the way --- what is a time mart??? 

 

Still lots to ponder over, but the story is progressing nicely. I like the comedic element of 444 trying to blend into the human world but failing massively. He just can't help being his arrogant domineering self with the humans. I especially laughed at his lack of respect to his ''superiors''. I'm wondering now how Ha Ram will fall in love with him. He'll have to lose that ''I'm better than all of you vermin'' attitude and start emoting more. Not sure how Song Seung Heon will cope with the deeper nuances of his characters portrayal. Although this is my first time encountering the actor, from what has been said, he's artistically challenged in the portrayal of complex characters so I hope he does us all proud. 

 

I really laughed though when she kicked him in the goolies and the reaction he gave, like it was the most painful thing ever especially when he had to ice the area. Too funny. I totally wasn't expecting her to go there but she did, surprising 444 and us all.

Watched Ep 3 and nicely unfolding the lives of the Grim Reapers. (Great to see 007 here, isn't he also in Mad Dog?)

SSH is quite convincing as 444 - yet somehow the arrogance of 444 is not fully melded with Moo Gang 2.0. I don't feel that 444 has that aura that humans are beneath his boot heels, just that he has no empathy or sympathy for them. Moo Gang 2.0 portrays a lot of arrogance as if these petty humans are a bother. Hmm....

 

I also wondered about why Ha Ram could not the the black smoke within Moo gang. Is it because she is emotionally connected to him?

And the callousness that 444 had when he dropped (!) the boy to his second death - yes, the boy was technically dead but there was still sympathy from me.

 

Can't wait to watch Ep4!

 I know what the meaning of having stressful days to even be be around enjoying drama you love and write and read about it   , so have power dear it hard but it life , my work has many days like tha t so i can't even be here for so many dramas and i had to stay away most of the year  so for tomorrow i hope for you a less stressful day 

about the drama  i find it so amazing that every ep's we get another connected between everyone after all who thought that BLACK is the grim reaper who take HR ex boyfriend soul ,  they meet before and i think we going to find more and more next , to be honest i thought that it was a mistake that in ep 3 when HR told him he know she can see shadow he remember the scene of the ex boyfriend i said to myself "but that MG memory not black and said maybe he start getting  MG memory " BUT no ep 4 show that BLACK was  really there

i thing what the hip hop grim reaper said was right maybe  the fact that BLACK get MG body out of everyone elso and he the was onl who could get him to be close to HR who see grim reaper  it was all planned from fated and god ?????????

i am enjoying too seeing BLACK can't get human logic and think that he better then them cause dear he will have to suffer so much more to learn his lesson and maybe HR not the so smart and has  a low EQ toosince she don't connected with people to much and she so dramatic in her feeling but she the right one to break BLACK cold mind after he can't be with her or use her just by using his normal logic or even the normal human logic , he learning now she not normal or logic person she just act as her feeling tell her and she so dramatic about it and don't give up easy so good luck for the high pride of the best grim reaper in the whole world and enjoy it since he will lose it soon

 i don't think so too ,when he meet her in the street after he run from the hospital he was wearing BLACK jacket but when she talk to him in the hospital after that he wasn't wearing anything BLACK and she didn't see that 

so i think that BLACK get it wrong why she can't  see him, so i am going to wait they like making us have the wrong idea that we know the fact now but they come again and throw another  information that prove we still missing a lot

and yeh that a nice to make the cold grim reaper interesting to find the true behind MG death and secrets it easy he has to do that to save himself and not lose HR before he catch his partner . and i am more and more into the thought that HR is a grim reaper daughter

 

 

about that they going to find a dark and scary fact if they keep  want to know who after MG and why i agree it freaking me up the little things we know till now show how scary it going to be after all it a story of killing innocent'. pro- killers, crazy men who torture people, and a child prostitution i can't keep talking about how much scary things is hidden for 20 years and going to show up soon   MG was holden a huge burden in his shoulder to find the true and i think he had guilty feeling about something that why he was trying hard to find it

okay now the theories that i can go with it for now :

• HR is the daughter of grim reaper
• HR father go in the groom body that night and live in his life , maybe like BLACK he had a reason and needed a detective body to catch someone too but later he couldn't leave because he loved HR and her mother and maybe from the start he take the body cause he fall in love
• MG not JOON oppa . MG is the little boy who lived with JOON maybe half brother or they are cousins ( they boy in white cloth  in the photo and in flashback )
• JOON oppa die after the two childern accidentally get in the way of all the crimes that were happen 20 years ago. no matter how JOON die that leave MG with guilt he tried to make JOON dream ture and become detective and he wear the Bracelet that HR gave to JOON cause it make him remember JOON who used to wear it alway . and he trying to solve the everything so JOON can rest in peace 
• the doctor was victim of so many horrible things with so many other little girl . that video not just has her but has big name men scene that was messing with little girls , the girl take the video and made deal with someone to help them if they gave the video to him but something go wrong and now many want that video and not everyone in the same side . there people who want to destroy it , people want to use it to destroy other and people who want it to control other , but fo sure cause that video so many crazy things happen in the past . if we get it wrong and the video wasn;t about using girl in dirty work then that mean the girl said something in it that can point finger to another bigger crime

Just now completed watching ep 4.. In the intro, there was a partner of Black during the accident of the ex of HR.. I think that partner is the relative of the detective partner of Black.. He was in Mujin during the case.. Plus the guy looked at the detective like a familiar person during the ex accident n then while meeting the chief commissioner, the detective mentioned he left Mujin 20 yrs ago after the person's death.. Is his death n HR's father death n the fire case linked?? The partner of Black seems to know something.. He said sorry to Black.. Is he going to take a person's body n continue his search?? 

I guess my theory abt Black was true.. the reason y HR can't see the shadow near MG even after Black possessed his body.. 

MG didn't die accidentally but someone is trying to murder him.... That's y even after changing the date of the person she couldn't see the shadow.. The shadow may not appear early.. It may appear later.. Like before HJ couldn't see the shadow for commissioner but after sometime when he visited the deceased victim's home it appeared.. Similar case might have happened to MG.. 

MG isn't joon I guess.. He is the small boy near joon.. I think Joon already died.. So MG is trying to uncover Joon's death secret n also the secret of the tape.. So only MG was unable to remember HR as she wasn't there in his life.. 

Black had dream of MG's past.. Is the body remembering what happened 20 yrs ago.. Both MG n Joon were chased by the oldie ahjusshi who threatened SW.. The oldie ahjusshi is the spider Tattoo guy.. is he n SW Related?? Is the lady in the pic near him was SW?? 

 

MS seems like a sweet guy.. Poor guy is treated badly by his two brother.. His father might have been doing something wrong.. As the bad brother said if he knows the reality then he wud never call you dad.. Is his dad also involved in Mujin case of 20 yrs before? So only the son erased all the details of that yr!! 

The child looked as he was gonna be sold or human trafficking.. Gosh!! There is definitely fishy with the police officers.. They looked like they were.. But black n HR r gonna save the child I guess.. But the warning in preview if he mendles too much in human stuff then he wud be in trouble.. This totally seems like the summary of the story.. 

I liked the part of MS looking at drunken HR n was feeling good.. They both were really cute.. 

Finally Black entered the room using MG's eyes n he looked at the pic n the video.. But couldn't see the video properly.. The video is abt the rape victim I guess.. SW seems to know abt the tape n the otherlady too knew abt it ..but Now it's with MG.. Hope no-one steals it..

I have to say this drama is so promising and the writer is doing a good job filling in the missing pieces. I see soy of foreshadowing in this drama. And maybe I am reading to much in to this drama. I love that I am able to guess/ theorize why Han Man Goo died?

 

I think there is a possibility that Man Goo might not really be Dead. We saw him talking to Black and something 415 said did make sense. Why did Black possess Man Goo? It was meant for Man Goo to die because Ha Ram can see the black shadows. Maybe since he died, maybe Here is a chance Man Hoo can live again. I guess that I am hoping for some kind of happiness for Ha Ram. 

Now I have a theory on why Ha Ram never saw the shadow on Man Goo. It’s because Man Goo haven’t found the clue that will put his life in danger. For example The Chief of Police’s life was safe until he looked at the Jin Sook’s album. That cop also knowis Ha Ram’s father’s murderer. The look on his face once he saw the video feed of the murderer and victim. He can can identity him by the way he walks. He looked so scared chingu’s. 

I am wondering what happens to the kid Man Goo used to hang out with. I find it so weird that kid is no longer in the picture. Who was he to MG? 

What was weird was that Man Goo was remembering a past confrontation with the man with scar from the psychiatric clinic where the first murder was taken place in Episode 2??? 

 

GR 415 is so funny and kinda cute and I am loving 007.  Black has great friend especially since he is so cold hearted. I feel bad for Black ( 447)  he is going to fall hard for Ha Ram but I feel like she will only love Joon Oppa/ Man Goo.

Hi @bebebisous33 chingu, wow Song Seung Hun as 444 is so charismatic and mean. I like how his eyes look, I mean the way he stare angrily at others. Just finished Ep3 and now going to watch Ep4.

So I have just finished watching the episode 4 which I enjoyed very much. For me, the writer is doing a great job because even if the story seems confusing at some point (episode 2), it makes the viewers ask questions which are indeed even mentioned in the drama itself. This underlines that the writer has been paying attention to details, while trying to maintain mystery for a long time. Moreover certain scenes are shown again but from a different perspective which gives us more clues and more answers to the questions we had before, like how HR and 444 met for the first time. 

Some also wonder why Ha Ram doesn't see the shadow in HMG's body. I don't think that the black suit is the definitive answer because like @Ais1ing pointed it out, Ha Ram saw HMG at the hospital and he had the white patient gown. On this thread, some of us had made the supposition that her father Kang Soo Hyuk was a grim reaper who entered the body of the deceased husband (prologue, episode 2) but then, Ha Ram only saw the shadow just before his death... Was he really a former grim reaper like 444? Since she doesn't see the shadow in his body, this could confirm that her father was indeed a former grim reaper who possessed a body. Moreover, Ha Ram only saw the shadow but never catch the face of the grim reaper. In my opinion, she couldn't see the difference between human grim reapers and grim reapers from the upper world. Third, the time is important. Like @UnniSarah mentioned it, commissioner General Jae Geun had a shadow, only after discovering the picture. As conclusion, an element has to be the trigger. Then I would like to analyse a very important scene, when HR discovers Black on the bridge. Suddenly, Black sees the ball showing HR indicating that she is about to die but before the same ball had shown HMG as future deceased. Striking is that HR's life was in danger but she didn't see the shadow next to herself. Secondly, Black can see the content of the ball which shows that he is still acting like a grim reaper. The shadow is in reality Black. As we can observe, Black is definitely a grim reaper in the body of a human but HR is blind to it. By saving Black, HR doesn't die. Moreover, this scene underlines the importance of timing, just like the scene with the commissioner general Jae Geun. So an element and the timing are important. Finally, I have the impression that it is connected to the way Black views HMG's body. He still doesn't consider himself as a human, hence he is able to survive, altough the poisoning has been successful. This would explain why HR's father who had been a grim reaper could die in the end, as he had accepted his human body and had become a human for real. On the other hand, he thought that he could survive since he had been a grim reaper in the past therefore he ignored his daughter's warning. Then we can develop the following theory: HR's father was a grim reaper from the upper world, therefore HR could never see his shadow. But as time passed on, he became a human hence he could die in the end. 

Then let us compare HMG with the student now:

• HMG is a grim reaper, a pure descent of the upper world, whereas the student was a human who committed suicide. 
• Then the latter wanted to live again with the aid of the student's body. So he wanted to become human again, but in HMG's case it was different. He just took HMG's body because he needed his body to catch the human grim reaper. He never intended to live as a human. 
• Notice that he can still travel like a grim reaper through the doors. I don't think that the student could do it. He walked like the other students.
• Then HMG survived two attacks, although he had been poisoned, whereas the other didn't. I believe that this underlines the difference between the two kind of grim reapers. Black/444 is indeed from the upper world, hence he is a supernatural person, while the student was human grim reaper.
• As conclusion, they had totally different goals. Sure, both were selfish but for 444, it was in order to fulfill his duty as grim reaper. 

For me, this story is about the journey of a grim reaper who discovers the real value of life and humans. So far, he has always looked down on humans hence he never had any empathy and compassion for the deceased. But the episode 4 illustrated us how HMG comes to realise the value of a human body and indirectly of HMG. Sure, his goal is still to catch Ji Dong the human grim reaper but now, he sees how dependent he is of HMG's body. But let us review all the scenes that indicated how much Black has fusioned with his human body:  

• First the pain in the testicles... so far, he only had one headache due to the poison attack and had enjoyed eating food but that was it. HR's defensive reaction was interesting because she hurt him in his manhood.  Then later, he even cut himself by shaving, showing us that his body was still alive, full of blood. Yet, he doesn't pay attention to it. 
• For the second time, he got poisoned but he survived the attack again. In my opinion, HMG should have died but he didn't due to his supernatural powers. I believe that Black has kept his supernatural powers because in the preview 3, he is able to catch the car driving.

 Black could not connect the murderer from the psychiatry clinic with the past event because he was not HMG. He only dreamt it in the episode 4, he had no memories of HMG's past life.

I wonder if the reason she can't see Black/444 is because he's been assigned as her Grim Reaper at death. He's also the reaper for MG. Maybe it would be like predicting her own death and her "gift" doesn't give her insight into her own future--so her reaper/444/Black is invisible to her.

 

At this moment, things are still illogical for me a disjointed. It doesn't make sense stop me that 444/Black could not see the reaper/his partner hiding in the body of the student he came to retrieve, but she could. Then we have at the very beginning of ep 4, Black says we can see other reapers but humans can't see us. Then why couldn't he see his partner hiding in the human body? If they can't be seen by other reapers when hiding a human body, I don't know why they all don't hide in a body to escape that existence.

if you only want him to die , why after the corpse.... the knife that the killer hold point to moo gang eyes, so definitely want to use it to open the secret room

 

 

it nice to have complicated script drama like this....  it make us viewers think out of box, i wonder if the writers eyeing soompi... and said... oh they guess right ... i need to change my script not as they predicted...

We saw the wanted posters at the beginning of Episode 3 - this would indicate that Grim Reapers have gone rogue but then we find out that there is a specialised unit to hunt them down --- The Death Squad. This would suggest that tracking them isn't easy. The other Grim Reapers did say to Black that he needs to fit in more and not stick out like a sore thumb. 

 

As to the repercussions if they're found gone rogue --- they did allude to Black being turned into one of the Cerberus so maybe that existence is anathema to them and sufficient enough to scare them straight as it were.

At this moment, things are still illogical for me a disjointed. It doesn't make sense stop me that 444/Black could not see the reaper/his partner hiding in the body of the student he came to retrieve, but she could. Then we have at the very beginning of ep 4, Black says we can see other reapers but humans can't see us. Then why couldn't he see his partner hiding in the human body? If they can't be seen by other reapers when hiding a human body, I don't know why they all don't hide in a body to escape that existence.

 

 

Because in 444's case, he never wanted to become human. In my opinion, grim reapers from the upper world feel superior to humans and don't want to live like humans. As for the human grim reapers, it seems that they usually have a partner (grim reapers from the upper world) so that the latter make sure that the human grim reapers don't hide in a human body. Notice that 444 had a partner before which seems to be a former human as he showed more empathy and could even remember Gwang Gyun. Since Black is in a human body, he can not see the shadow in a human body, he can only see the grim reapers as he has still the abilities of a grim reaper, but a human can not see grim reapers.

But then there was also the scene in the hospital, where Black wondered why his heart was beating so fast when Soo Wan was near him. So clearly MG's heart was still working fine at that moment. Besides, if the body of the deceased would really die and decompose with time (quite a short one), then there wouldn't be dead spirits trying to inhabit a dead person's body and there wouldn't be Death Squad for searching for those spirits, who desided to live a human life. Maybe since Black is a grim reaper inhabiting a human body he just reeks of death itself. Maybe that's what the dog sensed.

then how about this because he is in dead body that's why she can't see his shadow , may be she is only able to see shadow in living individual.

My mind having more crazy theory.....

If Ajusshi black//444 brother of MG. AND THE two little boys of past --Joona is Ajusshi black  and MG that little boy........May be.....Due to brotherly relationship he is totally diluted with MG body so......bond is strong and that's why she can't see his shadow .

or If Ajusshi black is joona and due to his childhood attachments with HR --he is destined to fall for HR.
