The gold medal goes to Mr. Sunshine, the most successful Korean drama in 2018 relative to the overall viewership performance of its group. The historical series follows the life of a Korean man, played by Lee Byung-hun, who was taken to the U.S. as a child and returns to his homeland as an American Marine Corps officer. It’s a critically acclaimed drama that received 9 nominations in this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards, including Best Drama, Director, and Screenwriter. With Sky Castle also boasting the same number of nominations, the no. of awards each of them will receive will determine which between the two is the winner when it comes to popularity and quality. In case you missed it, this is the third drama directed by Lee Eung-bok and written by Kim Eun-seok, the director-writer pair behind DOTS and Goblin.

Interestingly, Mr. Sunshine was directed and penned by the same director-writer pair who produced Goblin and the terrestrial series Descendants of the Sun. This period drama centers around a man (Lee Byung-hun) who is taken to the US as a child and returns home as an American Marine Corps officer during the time when foreign forces are threatening to colonize the land. After his return to Joseon, he meets a noblewoman (Kim Tae-ri) and falls for her. Praised for its history-rich plots and particularly strong female characters, the series received critical acclaim and positive reviews from both critics and ordinary viewers. The drama achieved a peak rating of 18.1% and became the top Korean drama in 2018 (beating 70 others) as far as the relative viewership performance is concerned. It is Sky Castle‘s biggest rival in the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Korea’s 55th Baeksang Awards took place on May 1 at the Coex Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul. The annual awards ceremony, which honors outstanding achievement in the Korean entertainment industry, was hosted by singer-actress Suzy and actors Shin Dong Yup and Park Bo Gum.

Several productions earned multiple awards, with the TV drama Sky Castle, which was set in a privileged Seoul neighborhood, winning the lion’s share. The drama focused on the often machiavellian efforts of the enclave’s residents to provide an educational advantage for their children. Although the drama did not win a best drama award, director Jo Hyun Tak won Best Director, actress Yum Jung Ah won Best Actress for TV, Kim Hye Yoon won a Best New Actress TV award and Kim Byung Chul won Best Supporting Actor.

My Mister, the story of a middle aged office worker whose life is transformed when he helps an abused co-worker, won Best TV Drama and Best TV script for the screenplay, written by Jae Yeong Park. The drama starred Lee Sun Kyun, IU and Jang Ki Yong. Star IU also won a Most Popular Actress award and Jang Ki Yong won Best New Actor award for playing an upright  policeman haunted by his father’s crimes in the drama Come and Hug Me.

The Light in Your Eyes earned a Grand Prize in TV for Kim Hye Ja. The drama also starred Han Ji Min and Nam Joo Hyuk. Lee Jung Eun won a Best Supporting Actress on TV award for that drama.

Will writer Kim Eun-sook return with something new in March next year?

Studio Dragon reported that no plans have been made, regarding an earlier report that Kim Eun-sook is coming out with her latest in March next year.

Kim Eun-sook is a star writer with successful dramas such as "Descendants of the Sun", "The Heirs", "Goblin", "Mr. Sunshine" and more. If she came out with something new, it would be the first time in a year and a half.

When she does come out with a new drama, it is anticipated that it will cause another syndrome.
