The 100th Anniversary of Independence Movement Day

Source: The Korean Way // Star News

Today, March 1, is a national holiday in Korea. It’s the observance of March 1 Movement Day (삼일절), commemorating a day in which Koreans openly resisted the occupation by the Japanese and fought for their independence. It is also sometimes called the Samil Independence Movement.

On March 1, 1919,  a series of demonstrations took place across Korea rallying for independence from Japanese occupation. Japan proclaimed its annexation of Korea in 1910, fully occupying the country, after having had a presence on the peninsula for years before that.

International Hallyu fans picked Mr Sunshine as 'Most Favourite Drama' in '2019 Overseas Korean Wave Status Survey'.
.
Korean Cultural International Agency (KCIA) announced the results of '2019 Overseas Korean Wave Status Survey' on Tuesday, Feb 26th.

International Hallyu fans picked "Mr. Sunshine" (4.7 %) and #BTS (10.3%) as the most favourite cultural contents from South Korea. This survey was conducted on 7,500 people from 16 countries.

According to the survey, the most favourite dramas are:

1. Mr Sunshine 4.7% mrs.jpg
2. Descendants of the Sun 3.7%
3. Goblin 3.4%
4. Why Secretary Kim 2.9%
.
"Hallyu consumption is increasing due to the decrease in anti-Korean sentiment and popularity of K-pop, the expansion of OTT (Internet TV service) platform distribution worldwide, and the relaxation of political and diplomatic tensions," said an official from KCIA.

K-pop topped the list with 17.3 %, followed by Korean food (9.9 %), IT industry (6.9 %), Dramas (6.8 %), and Beauty (5.6%). Among the 16 surveyed countries, Indonesia had the highest share of Korean cultural content consumption in all areas of content.

4. When Ae Shin and Eugene parted ways (Mr. Sunshine)
Mr. Sunshine (2018) was the melodrama you never thought you needed. It was interesting to see how Ko Ae Shin (Kim Tae Ri) and Eugene Choi (Lee Byung Hun) tried to figure out what love was. However, their situation was far from ideal, and at some point, they're left with no choice but to sacrifice and part ways.

Having been captivated by the drama “Mr. Sunshine”, it is impossible to not visit “Sunshine Studio”  while I was in Seoul.   Going there is not an easy task.  We decided to take the KTX train from Yongsan train station to Nonsan where the Sunshine Studio studio is located.   The train took one hour and 37 minutes.  When we arrived at Nonsan, we were approached by a taxi driver who said he can drive us there.  This was a correct decision as the trip was much shorter and we avoided having to walk at least 20 minutes from the bus stop to the Studio in the rain.  The bus ride would have taken more than 45 minutes!

Visiting Sunshine Studio is the best way to recapture the moments of the drama and to imagine oneself in Hanseong as Seoul was known in that time.  The set looked authentic.   However, I cannot find Room 304  where Eugene stayed.   The Director was very clever to take shots at the right angles to let us imagine a far bigger set with many more rooms.

Thanks so much @peonie for the wonderful post, it's really awesome to have firsthand sharing of the MR.SUNSHINE filming set and how it's really like up close. The highly rated drama not only a top-notch production, the filming set now plays an important role as a must-see tourist site in South Korea.

Hope more Kdrama fans and public alike will visit the filming set & studio to experience and appreciate the great drama.
