Upcoming tvN drama “Mr. Sunshine” posted new photos of Kim Tae Ri looking calm and determined as her new character from the age of romance.

“Mr. Sunshine” is a historical drama that will tell the story of a Korean man who boarded a warship to the United States in 1871 during the Korean Expedition and then returns after he gets stationed in Korea as an American soldier. Kim Tae Ri will play Go Ae Shin, the daughter of a noble family who has an innocent appearance but a tough mind.

This will be the first time Kim Tae Ri will be on the small screen. Previously, she had starred in movies such as “The Handmaiden” and “1987.” Kim Tae Ri, who is recognized not only for her acting skills but also for entertainment, is generating expectations on how she will portray Go Ae Shin’s character.

In the released stills, Kim Tae Ri is wearing a man’s traditional Korean clothes while working on shooting exercises with a black gun in a vast field of snow and rough mountain river. Her hair is tied up in a knot, and she is shooting at her target with clear eyes and a determined facial expression.

This scene was taken in the district of Changnyeong located in South Gyeongsang Province. Kim Tae Ri showed up on the set in the appearance of a man. After being cast in the drama, she practiced at a private shooting range to gain a sense of shooting guns as well as watched movies and videos repeatedly to perfect her transformation into Go Ae Shin.

Despite the long and tiring filming, she comforted the production crew and warmed up the atmosphere of the set.

The production crew stated, “Kim Tae Ri was totally committed to becoming Go Ae Shin during the entire filming. The more we filmed, the more we were sure she synchronized 200 percent with her character. Please look forward to her first drama appearance.”

The first episode of “Mr. Sunshine” will air on July 7 at 9 p.m. KST.

Yoo Yeon Seok shows off the cold side to his character for “Mr. Sunshine.”

Upcoming tvN drama “Mr. Sunshine” is about a man who left Korea when he was a boy and returned as an American soldier in 1871, at a time when Korea is undergoing a period of change. The drama will notably be reuniting writer Kim Eun Sook and director Lee Eung Bok, who previously collaborated on hit dramas “Descendants of the Sun” and “Goblin.”

In the drama, Yoo Yeon Seok plays Goo Dong Mae, the son of a butcher who rose up the ranks of the Black Dragon Society, and became its head. He returns to Korea to meet the daughter of a nobleman Go Ae Shin (played by Kim Tae Ri).

In the released photos, Yoo Yeon Seok has swords strapped to his waist and appears to be heading somewhere with his subordinates. With his wild hair and joyless expression, he exudes an icy charisma.

“Mr. Sunshine” will be the actor’s drama comeback in a year and a half, as he previously appeared in “Romantic Doctor Kim.” It was reported that he impressed staff members with his passion towards his acting during filming, and that he had even prepared learning swordfighting before filming started.

A source from the production staff stated, “Yoon Yeon Suk’s character Goo Dong Mae is a dual-sided character as he is someone that will coldly, unhesitatingly strike someone down with his sword, but is also filled with fiery affection for Go Ae Shin. Yoo Yeon Seok has been thoroughly researching and interpreting his character, so please look forward to his transformation into Goo Dong Mae.”

“Mr. Sunshine” will air its first episode on July 7 at 9 p.m. KST.

K-drama Writer Kim Eun Sook & PD Lee Eung Bok Target Third Collaborative Hit With “Mr. Sunshine”

By abbyinhallyuland | HelloKpop

WILL MR. SUNSHINE FOLLOW THE FOOTSTEPS OF GOBLIN AND DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN?

That’s a question that Korean drama fans look forward to as the premiere date of Mr. Sunshine approaches next month.

As the third project of acclaimed writer Kim Eun Sook and director Lee Eung Bok, attention is focused on the production team and the star-studded cast of Mr. Sunshine.

The creative tandem flaunts a combination of stellar drama roster which includes The Heirs, A Gentleman’s Dignity, Secret Garden, Discovery of Love, Secret Love and School 2013. Such great dramas came from these showrunners that it’s hard not to anticipate another amazing story.

Mr. Sunshine

Boasting South Korea’s representative actor Lee Byung Hun and powered by all-star main cast of Kim Tae Ri (Little Forest), Yoo Yeon Seok (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim), Kim Min Jung (Man to Man) and Byun Yo Han (Six Flying Dragons), the hype for tvN’s upcoming weekend drama keeps on skyrocketing.

Mr. Sunshine will be Lee Byung Hun’s return to the small screen after 9 years since spy drama IRIS. Kim Tae Ri of The Handmaiden fame will officially make her television debut.

The new tvN historical series treads on the story of a boy who boarded a warship during the Shinmiyangyo, a United States expedition to Korea in 1871. He then returns to his native country in late Joseon era as an American soldier.

Mr. Sunshine

The released character posters and sketches reflect Lee taking the role of Choi Yoo Jin, a US Marine Corps captain, with Kim Tae Ri sporting a strong gaze holding a rifle as a famous Joseon freedom fighter. All main characters symbolically expressed their lives in the catastrophic time of late Joseon era.

Mr. Sunshine replaces Lawless Lawyer for the weekend time slot starting July 7.

Netflix has picked up multi-territory rights to Mr Sunshine, a new Korean period drama series starring Lee Byung-hun.

The show is written by Kim Eun-sook and directed by Lee Eung-bok, the pair who created smash it series “Descendants of the Sun.” Production is by Hwa&Dam Pictures, one of Korea’s top drama production firms, and Studio Dragon, who teamed up with Hwa&Dam for Goblin and Bravo My Life.

Running to 24-episodes, “Mr Sunshine” will premiere exclusively on Netflix starting July 7, with episodes streaming on the same day of its Korean broadcast in the U.S. and most Asian territories. The series will then premiere in Japan on July 8, and the rest of the world on July 19.

Based in Shinmiyangyo, or the U.S. expedition to Korea in the late 19th century, Mr. Sunshine tells the story of a Korean boy born into a family of a house servant running away to board an American warship, later to return to his homeland as a U.S. marine officer. He falls in love with an aristocrat’s daughter and discovers the dark scheme to colonize the country that he once ran away from.

Lee (“G.I. Joe,” “RED 2,”) is accompanied by Kim Tae-ri The Handmaiden, who plays the aristocrat’s daughter. Other cast include Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Min-jung, and Byun Yo-han.

“We have seen so much passion for top quality Korean stories, and the pedigree of a title like ‘Mr. Sunshine’ is a significant step forward in building a strong Korean content library for our members around the world,” said Rob Roy, Netflix VP of content acquisition.
