3.The acupuncture itself. There are few academic and historical (translated) articles about Heo Im and Heo Jim so this is a special area in medicine that will be interesting to learn for casual fans.

I really want to know the background story of this figure name Heo Im.

He was definitely controlled by it.

He seems enchanted? to that new set. I thought as a long time practitioner, he will take his usual tools. No, he decided to use the new one.

Heo Im was real historic person, a famous medical practitioner of mid Joseon Dynasty of Korea. He published acupuncture medical book called 침구경험방(鍼灸經驗方) in 1644. Born in 1570, lived through midset of 17th century and 7 years war.

I want to ask about the stone(?) as mark of Haeminseo. It is real? Even the stone that Heo Im used to sharpen his needles?

.......................On the other hand, I see Heo Im colder than her because he is more ambitious and greedy. He has no problem to abandon his patients for selfish reasons (treating the wealthy ones). The reason he refused to treat the servant's mother was that he had other powerful and wealthy patients to treat. He prioritised them over the poor servant. This showed us how distant and cold he is in the end. His only goal had been to gather money for his treatments. Sure, he must have suffered coming from a lowly condition. But from my point of view, he used the commoners. Since he was treating the commoners and did his work with dilligence and dedication, he could get a good reputation. But the truth is that once people started talking about his skills, these rumours reached the highers-up. I noticed how the little girl got so disappointed, when he left the office after the bell ringing. Heo Im had no qualms to lie to the people who visited Haeminseo. In reality, he wasn't visiting the people who couldn't come to his office. He was on his way to treat rich and powerful people. I believe that's the reason why the little girl refused the treatment from Heo Im. She knew that he was no different from the other doctors. ....................................

@bebebisous33 Good to see you here too!     I am really glad that KNG is in a role that has this dark side to him. He is such a good actor.  That laughter of his despite the sufferings of others around him, as he pursues amassing reputation and wealth, has a chill to it.   What did he whisper to the little girl, who has asked the cruel favor of death?

@LyraYooWhen I saw the teasers = it all seemed so light and breezy and such an overused old time trope, I had my doubts that I could bond with this drama, but hell bent to watch KNG in anything he did.  It is going to pay off. These characters are more layered and interesting than the teasers could show us.

@dekaronPerhaps Heo Jun is his noble birth father. I think I read in a synopsis that his mothe rwas a concubine. But in this episode a character said his parents were commoners.

Is he related to Heo Jun or did they meet to exchange their discoveries

According to internet information they served the king at around the same period of time. Heo Im was being called "the Best Acupuncturist of Chosun".

Episode 2

We get a glimpse of Dr. Heo as a boy. We learn Dr. Choi has a trauma from the past. At the end Dr. Choi questions Dr. Heo about medical treatment in Joseon.  She is strangely accepting of his story. He asks if she trusts him. Perhaps she is acting the way the psychiatrist recommended.

The 15 year old teen terror runs until her heart stops and Dr Heo brings her back.  She tells him he should have let her die. She is eerily reminiscent of the little girl who told him to let her die in Joseon.  We don't know what he whispered in the child's ear but he did leave her to go to see the King.

I am still enjoying the drama.  There were no ff moments, it moves quickly.  KNG's  antics are fun to watch, especially his surprise and delight with the modern world.

Actually, she didn't believe him at all but thought that he might be suffering from a delusion hence she visited her friend psychiatrist. The fact that she acted as if she believed Heo Im was to ensure that he would trust her and follow her to see the psychiatrist. In the end, she never believed him. Her gentle and nice manner was just a ruse. On the other hand, she was afraid of revealing her mental issues. She has a trauma but she fears that this could be hold against her at the hospital.

YK's young patient is thinking like Heo Im's little patient. Both preferred dying than being a burden to the doctors. Both have the impression that the doctors can not save them, moreover they had enough treatment. Their illness made them resign.

YK's colleague is terrible, I hope, something bad happens to him in the sense that he loses his promotion because so far, he has been promoted due to his connections and not skills. As conclusion, Heo Im and YK are suffering from the same circumstances. Both are great doctors but they don't have the social background that would help them to get promoted.

watched the two episodes and in terms of tone, it seems a bit confused in a way. hahahahha.. based on the promos, I thought it would be quite funny like @maddymappo said but instead, it seems kind of serious and there are lots of real world underlying questions about how medicine works. perhaps, it is just teething and hope it settles into a more even tone.

it is interesting that regardless of what time period, issues that doctors face does not seem to have changed much. how do you prioritize care? how many patients can you see in a day? while Heo Im seemed kind of cruel, there was also huge practical streak that runs through him. the fact is as a doctor, he cannot see every patient that comes to his door. and as a human, he also needs his rest and time off. and yes, he can't be offering his services for free and needs to be paid. so it is interesting to see a sort of light hearted kind of take on his attitude.

after all, doctor's fatigue and stress is a real issue -- one of my relatives (who works in medicine) told me that by the time, doctors get to be specialists after all that studying, they are literally burnt out and exhausted and are more prone to heart and stress related conditions. yet, they are expected to keep working, see as many patients as possible to get the registrar ringing and there is always someone sick because thats the cycle of life. so if we look at it that way, Heo Im was not necessarily cruel but simply setting limits on what he can do without burning himself out...

@bebebisous33 ~ rather than the children giving up, saw another question -- at what point do we say let things take its natural course and not keep torturing the body? if it is a terminal kind of condition, is it better to keep them as comfortable as possible rather than opt for more treatment which might be invasive?

@dekaron ~ what is the 3rd ward? found the mix between eastern and western medicine interesting. even the little tidbit like where he wonders why the departments are split when the body is one and therefore should be treated as one unit. so different philosophies explained so simply in a single scene. and it was interesting to learn that acupuncture was treated for a vast range of diseases -- the writer seems to have done some major homework.

it is kind of funny that the most modern marvels that he seems super excited by is the medical stuff. he seemed like a kid in a candy store looking at all the hospital stuff. hahahahha. so someone genuinely in love with medicine.

but I did find it funny that he wasn't sure what exactly 'boyfriend' meant and assumed it meant 'kind man' hahahahah... so it is going to be amusing when he realizes what it actually means... for a beginning, it is not bad. hope it keeps being interesting.

@LmanglaIts the name of the drama with doctors from eastern and western medicine in modern day

HurJun & Horse Doctor also feature acupuncture quite well

Another drama Jejoongwon deals with introduction of Western medicine is Joseon but that is more surgery oriented

ah I see @dekaron, thanks. am not a great fan of saeguks and medical saeguks even less so. hahahahha... and for some reason, got pretty dr. jin vibes (minus the weird baby, hahahah) while watching this drama. did anyone else get those feels? especially when he felt her pulse and asked why it sounded familiar. immediately, it made me think of doppelgangers or her being related to someone he knew or loved in the joseon age. and since her doctor/father seems to be in acupuncture and lives in this house where it had "heo im soo oriental medicine" sign, it made me wonder if it is part of the clinic he established long ago. so in that case, what does that mean? is she his descendant? or of someone who worked under him?

and on a side note, hats off to those fan subbers who manage to sub all those medical terms in these dramas. a tough job no?

this is a good drama, with KNG! love medical drama and who can say no to KNG. he is absolute adorable here, pulling off all the antics perfectly. KNG never fails to impress me and KAJ is another precious gem.

wondering if the cause of his time jump will be revealed,

Dramas with a Side of Kimich

1st Impressions: Live Up to Your Name

.;a1a2.png

Live Up to Your Name, the latest drama starring one of my favorite actors of all time, Kim Nam Gil, aired this weekend.  Which can only mean one thing… it is time to write another 1st impression post and let you know if this drama is a keeper or one that is doomed to be kicked to the curb.

PROS:

.;a1a2s2
.;a1a2s3

Kim Nam Gil – SQUEEEE!!!! Kim Nam Gil is back on my TV screen. Even better? Seeing a non-revenge seeking Kim Nam Gil for once on my TV screen. His smile is pure happiness bottled up in one charismatic khottie actor package and, I for one, could not be happier. So far Kim Nam Gil has shined as the ambitious Joseon acupuncturist looking to create a better life for himself. Who due to greed and some magical shenanigans finds himself stuck in 2017 Seoul.

Kim Ah Joong – I have mentioned in past posts that Kim Ah Joong is not always my favorite actress. Depending on the role and the way a director films her facial expressions, she can be very hit or miss. Thankfully, after two episodes, she is totally in the former category in Live Up To Your Name. I find her character interesting, strong, and so far, very compelling. I liked the glimpse into her issues with acupuncture vs western medicine and am excited to see where this goes within the story.

.;a1a2s4a3
.;a1a2s4a5
.;a1a2s4a4

Time Travel Trope – The concept of time travel is my current favorite trope out of all the many drama tropes.  It is very rare that I don’t enjoy the resulting confusion and hijinks.  Plus, if it gives me more scenes like Kim Nam Gil discovering the escalotor, then I’m all for it.

Eye Acting – Some actors are able to convey whole conversations through their eyes.  Kim Nam Gil is just such an actor; a fact that is causing me so much joy!  His various expressions are bringing the comedy to a whole new level of fun.  If nothing else, I would suggest watching, just to watch KNG’s sexy eyes.

.;a1a2s4a2

Unique Story – So far I am very interested as to how and why drama fate is bringing these two people together.  Sure there is the obvious difference of opinions when it comes to medical treatments, but is that really all it is?  I can only hope that the story will continue to engage the viewer and give us a story that both makes sense and is entertaining.  Something that makes sense  seems to be hard to find in this last chunk of dramas.

CONS:

.;a1aCrazy Pants Filming Techniques – I swear if the director twirls that camera one more time I might be tempted to do something drastic.  Not sure what, since I am not deserting Kim Nam Gil over an annoying filming technique… but maybe scream a few curse words into the atmosphere and hope the negative karma comes crashing onto the director.

Just hold the thing still and focus on Kim Nam Gil’s glorious facial expressions.  Is that too much to ask?

Graphic Scenes – If I went my whole life without seeing a guy’s festering puss being sucked out of a needle, I would be a happy camper.  I think that is pretty much all I need to say regarding this aspect of the drama.

There you have it.  My initial impressions for Live Up To Your Name.  Is it worth watching?  I would say the answer to that is a resounding yes.  The plot is fun, the acting is better than average, and so far the whole show is entertaining.  There are even signs of fuzzy happy feelz coming our way in the future.  What were your first thoughts?  Be sure to let me know in the comments.

Til next time,

Kmuse

Drama Fever posted

"Due to last-minute licensing issues, we are not able to make this series available. Still interested in a fun time travel medical drama? Check out Faith or Time Slip Dr. Jin!"

How very sad. This is promising to be such a good drama and KNG is making his first tv drama performance  since Shark in 2013.  Very frustrating.

I hate to say it, but probably because there are no young idols in it, DF didn't want to pay the price because the leads are older than the demographic that they cater to.
