Cross burnings and religious fanaticism in Rescue Me’s eerie teaser

rescuem5.jpg

OCN’s newest thriller Rescue Me has released its first teaser. The drama is based on a dark psychological thriller webtoon called Out of the World, about a group of youths who end up becoming involved in taking down a mysterious religious cult that threatens to ruin the lives of the people around them. Taecyeon (Bring It On, Ghost) and Seo Ye-ji (Hwarang) star as the two leads. She plays the girl trapped in the cult who needs rescuing, and Taecyeon is the youth who feels a strange pull to save this stranger that he’s never met before. Lee David is reuniting with his Bring It On, Ghost co-star, and plays one of Taecyeon’s friends who helps with the rescuing.

The supporting cast list is even more eye-catching to me, peppered with experienced veterans who are regulars in dramaland: Jo Sung-ha (The K2) will play the charismatic cult leader who ends up controlling a small village, and Park Ji-young (The Liar and His Lover) and Jo Jae-yoon (Defendant) will play two of his loyal cult members.

The recently released teaser is composed of quick clips and a suffocating view that only shows us a tiny portion of the frame, which adds to the strange, chilling tone of the teaser. First we get shots of a long road leading to an isolated area, then we cut to Jo Jae-yoon’s unnaturally grinning face, which is followed by disturbing images of half-smiles, broken picture frames, and religious zealotry. A book titled “The Road to Salvation” is shown, and all the while, Jo Sung-ha’s voice narrates in the background: “Evil approaches in deceptively kind appearances. Believe in the new God and believe in me.”

Well, the subject matter is certainly novel in dramaland, so I’m looking forward to seeing if it delivers on its promise of shocking psychological thrills. Saturday-Sunday drama Rescue Me will premiere on OCN following Duel, starting August 8.

Spooked in the dark in latest Rescue Me teaser

In the latest teaser for OCN’s new original series Rescue Me, the group of young hillbillies led by Taecyeon (Bring It On, Ghost) embodies the copy that flashes across the screen: “Hot-blooded country bumpkins save the cult world.” This upcoming psychological thriller will tell the story of how they fight against a local religious cult in order to rescue a girl from its fanatic clutches.

Based on a web comic called Out of the World, this drama will feature unemployed youths who laze around in their small hometown not doing much until they realize that their first love, played by Seo Ye-ji (Hwarang), may be in danger. They set out to rescue her from a creepy religious cult led by Jo Sung-ha (The K2).

Taecyeon plays the “good boy” who is also a bit of a dunce. His crew of boys includes: stubbornly independent friend Woo Do-hwan (The Man Living in Our House), the ultimate tacky bumpkin Lee David (Bring It On, Ghost), and the strong boy who loves to eat Ha Hwe-jung.

Spoiler

They all walk through the dark forest together in the teaser, braving the scary woods with nothing but flashlights. One voice among them says that they should stop, because they could all be killed. Taecyeon disregards him completely, calling him an idiot. The first boy tries again, saying that maybe they should tackle things they’re capable of handling.

But Taecyeon interjects, asking since when have they started parsing details before charging headfirst into anything. He shines a light onto an impending gate in the middle of the woods that’s engraved with the phrase: “Board the ship of salvation and be whole.” Then he says that once they cross this, it really won’t be a game anymore.

Despite only having heard their voices bantering back and forth in this teaser, I’m really liking the easy, playful brotherly camaraderie I can sense amongst the group. If they can interject some humor and levity into the psychological thriller, I can see this drama potentially being one to watch this summer.

OCN’s Saturday-Sunday drama Rescue Me will premiere August 5.

In the leader they trust for OCN’s Rescue Me

by tipsymocha

rescueme-teaser301.jpg

Well played, OCN. If your intention was to creep me out, then you’ve outdone yourself. Rescue Me, the upcoming thriller about a cult and a group of youths who unexpectedly gets caught up in it has released two new short teasers and they’re… unsettling, to say the least. They actually work really well, because in addition to setting up the general feel for the show, they’ve certainly caught my interest when Rescue Me was previously low on my radar.

The first teaser has a really simple but effective concept: All of the main players in Rescue Me, from the cult leader to his loyal (and maybe not so loyal) followers, to our ragtag group of youths who enter the cult grounds to save Seo Ye-ji (Hwarang), pose in front of the cult gates like a yearbook photo. You know, if cults had yearbooks. Park Ji-young (The Liar and His Lover) plays the cult leader’s right-hand woman, and she narrates as the camera pans out, “We are a community who shares everything in our leader.”

Spoiler

Jo Jae-yoon (Defendant), another devoted follower, then states what sounds suspiciously like a real Bible verse: “Love thy neighbor as yourself.” And finally, the leader himself tells his congregation, “Do not be afraid. And trust in me,” as he inconspicuously rests his hand on Seo Ye-ji’s thigh. Gahhhhhh. So disturbing. Even more so when you read the plaques on the cult gates, which includes words like “Salvation” and “Eternal life,” and at the very top, “You shall become whole once you board the boat of salvation.”

It looks like Seo Ye-ji’s character in Rescue Me was never a willing participant in the cult led by a white-haired Jo Sung-ha (The K2). In the second teaser, she watches a fevered, wholly alarming worship service conducted by the cult leader as she says offscreen, “Mom, I don’t want to. Those people are… strange.” She does, however, seem to bond a little with the other younger members whose parents also pulled them into the cult, and Jo Sung-ha muses to Park Ji-young, “The children’s souls are so bright.” Which is so, so creepy when the teaser immediately follows that up with Seo Ye-ji getting manhandled by Jo Jae-yoon, with a strong undercurrent of molestation.

Spoiler

Well, at least Park Ji-young’s character might have an ounce of a conscience (buried somewhere deeeep inside her brainwashed head), because she also looks uncomfortable at Jo Sung-ha laying a hand way too high on a female’s thigh. A chyron appropriately reads, “This place is hell…” We see Seo Ye-ji’s once-happy family in a photo as its frame comes crashing down, and she tearfully calls out, “Rescue me.”

I’ve seen quite a few American shows that deal with cults, but I don’t think Korea has ever really addressed them in dramas before, so I’m looking forward to this portrayal of a cult leader and his fanatic believers. Even if I might need a shower every time I watch an episode. And it looks like there’ll be interesting psychological elements in play, because there does seem to be some inner conflict between the members themselves. And once Taecyeon(Bring It On, Ghost) and his friends, played by Lee David (Bring It On, Ghost), Woo Do-hwan (The Man Living in Our House), and Ha Hwe-jung, burst in to save Seo Ye-ji and her family, I’ll be eager to see what their disturbance sets in motion.

OCN’s Rescue Me will follow currently airing Duel on August 5, in the Saturday-Sunday slot.

Storming the cult gates for OCN’s Rescue Me

by javabeans

rescueme_10.jpg

We get a tinge of darkness, mystery, and creepiness in these new posters for OCN’s new thriller Rescue Me—although not nearly as creepy as the last batch of teasers, which are admittedly hard to outdo on the creep factor. But this drama has a very compelling angle in its cult storyline, as it tells of a young woman who finds herself trapped in a religious cult and begging for rescue, and the group of young men who happen to hear her cry for help and get involved.

Those young men will be led by Taecyeon (Bring It On, Ghost), pictured in the above poster leaning on his motorcycle, while his buddies will be played by (going clockwise from Taec) Woo Do-hwan (The Man Living in Our House), Ha Hwe-jung, and Lee David (Bring It On, Ghost). The copy on their poster reads, “Hot-blooded country boys, saving the cult world.”

The second poster features the central characters on the cult side, headed by silver-haired Jo Sung-ha as the charismatic leader. (The hair strikes me as a little odd in that poster, or maybe it’s the Muppet eyebrows, but I’m appeased by the teaser clips we’ve seen so far, in which he looks more mysterious and less cheesy.) He’s flanked by his devoted lackeys, with Jo Jae-yoon(Defendant) skulking to his right and Park Ji-young (The Liar and His Lover) looking faithful and proud on his left. Their poster tells us, from our leader’s perspective, “I will make sure you are saved.”

rescueme_12.jpg

Below that we have the victims of the cult, with Seo Ye-ji (Hwarang) standing apart from her family, who get sucked into its clutches while she remains wary (though no less ensnared). Yoon Yoo-sun (Shopping King Louis) plays her feeble mother, Jang Hae-kyun (Ruler–Master of the Mask) plays the father who failed in business, and Jang Yoo-sang (The Magician) plays her twin brother. I can see why they’d cling to the cult as their hope for improving their lives even just a tiny bit, and why their daughter feels a sense of responsibility to care for them. Seo Ye-ji is the voice of their poster, which reads, “It is hell here… Rescue my family.”

Below that, we have a couple more teasers (bearing the same taglines as above), one that features the young band of rescuers with Seo Ye-ji, and the other that pictures the full cast in front of the cult compound, with leader Jo Sung-ha’s hand resting unsettlingly on Seo Yi-ji’s thigh. Gack.

I expect Rescue Me to be a bit dark and disturbing, but because the core conflict is so primal and urgent (save these people from hell! And not in a religious sense), I’m hoping for pounding thrills and a driving sense of immediacy and danger. I like that the four young men are described as country bumpkins, because that gives them a feeling of being simple folks who may have crude methods, which gives them an underdog vibe. And Taecyeon as a hot-blooded bumpkin with a sense of honor? I didn’t buy him for a second as a brainiac model student in Bring It On, Ghost, but THIS I can go for.

Rescue Me will be a Saturday-Sunday show on OCN premiering on August 5.
