KBS variety drama The Best Hit casts Yoon Shi-yoon, Kim Min-jae

Yoon Shi-yoon (Mirror of the Witch) in a comedy? I’m in! Casting is officially underway for KBS’s new variety drama The Best Hit, the station’s second attempt at the mixed-format drama after 2015’s The Producers. Chief producer Seo Soo-min, who helmed The Producers (at least at the start), is attempting to revive the format and she’s tapped PD Yoo Ho-jin—the variety PD who revived a flagging 1 Night 2 Days in its third season—to direct what will be his first drama. So then naturally, PD Yoo called upon 1N2D member Yoon Shi-yoon to star. Yoon has confirmed, and so has Kim Min-jae (The Lonely Shining Goblin), for the youth comedy set in the music entertainment world.

 

The 1N2D connection is a little mind-bendy since Cha Tae-hyun played a thinly veiled version of PD Yoo in The Producers, but The Best Hit won’t be about variety PDs this time—it’ll be about idols, so perhaps more like IU’s slice of The Producers. The series will be a comedy about the tumultuous lives of contemporary twentysomethings, where everything from communication, to love, to basic survival is a source of worry. Sitcom writer Lee Young-chul (Potato Star 2013QR3, three seasons of High Kick, Once Upon a Time in Saengchori) will be penning the script.

Yoon Shi-yoon will play idol star Yoo Hyun-jae, a member of top idol group J2. He burst onto the music scene like a comet and slays fans with his good looks and his dance moves (pfft, I’m already laughing imagining Yoon Shi-yoon with the dance moves), but he continuously creates waves in the industry with his scandals, and has become known as a scandal-maker.

Kim Min-jae has been cast to play Lee Ji-hoon, an ordinary young man preparing to take the civil service exam. But his real dream is to become an idol star, so he secretly spends all of his time and effort on becoming an idol trainee at a late age. I smell rivalry and bromance in the air!

Early descriptions included a father-son relationship with a father who was a top star in the ’90s, but it’s unclear whether that storyline will remain. So far there’s nothing in the character or plot descriptions that sounds any different from a regular drama, but I expect the variety aspect of the format to come out in the execution, as The Producers did with its mockumentary style. I loved that approach and was sad when they scrapped it mid-show, so I’m hoping that this time they’ll stick to their original vision, whatever that may be. PD Yoo has a naturally funny sensibility, so I’m cautiously optimistic about his first crossover project into dramaland.

The Best Hit is aiming for a May broadcast, though nothing has been confirmed regarding the timeslot.

KBS revisits “variety drama” format with upcoming comedy The Best Hit

 

KBS hinted at this last year, and now we have confirmation that the station is indeed reviving its hybrid “variety drama” format, which it initially attempted back in 2015 with The Producers. The new comedy series is titled The Best Hit, and although it’s not technically a Producers Season 2, it’s being unofficially called that because the same chief producer will be in charge of the new show.

The Best Hit will be a mix of family and rom-com genres and centers around an immature father and his mature son. In the ’90s, Dad was a top star twentysomething, and recalls his glorious youth as a time when he could do anything he set his mind to. Twenty years ago, Dad disappeared from the public eye, only to reappear two decades later as the neighborhood slacker. Meanwhile, the son’s life as a twentysomething is quite the opposite of Dad’s, full of frustration and worry, and the show will follow their father-son bromance in a cheerful story of growth and maturation.

 

Personally, I found the variety-drama concept refreshing and loved the dry humor and mockumentary style of The Producers’ early episodes much more than its later (standard) style, so I’m looking at The Big Hit with interest. I was bummed when The Producers dropped the experimental hybrid angle after only a couple episodes, because although it’s true that audiences had trouble grasping the concept, the show abandoned it and switched over to a conventional rom-com style without even allowing viewers a chance to get used to the format. But perhaps PD Seo Soo-min, the variety veteran who initially headed The Producers, wants another shot at trying her original vision.

PD Seo has had quite successful career as director, producer, and then chief producer on a number of variety programs, among them Music Bank, Gag Concert, Happy Sunday and Yoo Hee-yeol’s Sketchbook. The writer attached to this project is Lee Young-chul, who has a number of sitcom titles to his name, including the campus comedies Nonstop 5 and Rainbow Romance, the three seasons of High Kick, and tvN’s Once Upon a Time in Saengchori and Potato Star 2013QR3.

According to Seo Soo-min, the project is still in the planning stages; aside from the writer, nothing else has been decided, such as director, cast, or scheduling. A synopsis has been completed, but is reportedly still being revised. It hopes to air in the latter half of this year.

Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Min Jae are set to work on a new drama together that is helmed by Yoo Ho Jin, who is well-known for being the former PD of “2 Days & 1 Night.”

Representatives of the new variety drama “Greatest One Shot” (literal title) confirmed that the two actors will be appearing in the production, which will follow youths in their twenties as they live, love, and do their best to thrive. The project will be overseen by PD Seo Soo Min and Chorokbaem Media, the team behind “Producer,” the first drama to be categorized as a variety drama.

Yoon Shi Yoon will play Yoo Hyun Jae, who is a member of J2, a K-pop group that came in like a shooting star and stole the hearts of countless fans with their superb singing and dancing skills. His character is also known as a scandal maker, keeping the industry gossiping with a slew of scandalous events.

The actor is said to have made the decision to appear in the drama based on his relationship with PD Yoo Ho Jin, who was pivotal in helping Yoon Shi Yoon join the team of “2 Days & 1 Night.” Many are excited to see what their reunited synergy will bring.

Kim Min Jae will play the role of Lee Ji Hoon, a trainee who hopes to become the greatest idol ever. Though many believe he is preparing for the civil service examination, Lee Ji Hoon is actually secretly training to be an idol. From playing a cold and cruel king in tvN’s “Goblin” to a cute nurse in SBS’s “Romantic Doctor Kim” in 2016, Kim Min Jae has been praised for enthralling viewers with his performances.

Monster Union, the production company of the upcoming drama, released a statement about the two actors which read, “We are certain that Yoon Shi Yoon will breath life into his character Yoo Hyun Jae with his talented acting skills and the energy and comedic timing he has crafted through his appearance on ‘2 Days & 1 Night.’ We expect him to show a new side of himself that he’s never shown before. Kim Min Jae is an actor who hypnotizes people with his acting, and we believe he will bring this charm to his new character, Lee Ji Hoon.”

“Greatest One Shot” is currently set to begin airing in May.

Child actress-turned-grownup Lee Se-young courted for The Best Hit

 

Lee Se-young was one of those actresses who had been in the industry for so long that I would recognize her but not remember any of the projects she had been in. So she was without a real breakout role until her most recent family drama Laurel Tree Tailors; she managed to snag the 2016 KBS Newcomer Award for her role as a cute spoiled chaebol heiress (even though she’s been acting for nearly twenty years… yeah, I don’t understand K-drama awards either). Due to her rising popularity, she’s been getting numerous offers; chief among them is the mixed-format youth drama The Best Hit about aspiring young musicians setting out to achieve their dreams.

 

Yoon Shi-yoon (Mirror of the Witch) and Kim Min-jae (The Lonely Shining Goblin) have already signed on to be part of the main cast, and Lee Se-young is the favored choice for the female lead character, who is a cheerful, perky civil servant exam student. The story seems a little similar to The Liar and His Lover because it’s about a complicated musician father-son relationship. The plot description says that a star who disappeared twenty years ago, reappears in front of his adult son in the present day and the rest of the drama is about the events that happen in their lives from that point on.

I could see the potential match-up between Yoon and Lee working out well because they both have this amazing puppy dog energy (Exhibit A: Enrique in Flower Boy Next Door; Exhibit B: Min Hyo-won in Laurel Tree Tailors). I’m also curious to see how the variety aspect is going play out, whether it’ll be similar to the feel of Producers. It’s being helmed partially by PD Yoo Ho-jin, who worked on 1 Night 2 Days, so the team definitely has a variety show expert on board, and if everything comes together, it sounds like we’ll be in for lots of good-natured fun and laughter.

Currently, The Big Hit team is going on a casting spree because they want to broadcast the drama by this May, so hopefully we’ll see this soon.

'The Best Shot' is a youth drama telling the story of a troublesome, popular idol group member Yoo Hyun Jae (Yoon Si Yoon), and an idol trainee Lee Ji Hoon (Kim Min Jae). It's unclear what role Dong Hyun Bae will be playing.

 

The variety drama is also garnering attention for its production team, headed by former '1 Night 2 Days' producer Yoo Ho Jin, and now actor Cha Tae Hyun, for his first ever attempt at directing a production. Yoo Ho Jin PD asked Cha Tae Hyun for help with 'The Best Shot' since it's his drama-debut, having worked in variety shows all his career, and Cha Tae Hyun obliged after much debate. 

 

It's been revealed that Cha Tae Hyun will also play a minor role in the variety drama, in the form of a small entertainment label CEO. 'The Best Shot' is aiming to broadcast in May.

Cha Tae-hyun joins variety drama The Best Hit as actor and director

Actor Cha Tae-hyun (The Producers) will be co-producing upcoming KBS variety drama The Best Hit with 1 Night 2 Days PD Yoo Ho-jin, serving as both director and actor on set. That’s super interesting, as it will be Cha’s first attempt at taking on a directorial role. From the current plot description, it sounds like a low-key slice-of-life drama about young adults in their early twenties as they worry and learn how to connect with people, how to love, and how to succeed in this harsh world. And I can definitely see that concept working out with a reality-TV-type format.

 

Cha joins Yoon Shi-yoon (Mirror of the Witch), who will play a popular boy band member whose complicated love life is the favorite fodder of tabloid magazines, while Kim Min-jae (The Lonely Shining Goblin) will be an idol trainee with dreams of making it big. Lee Se-young (Laurel Tree Tailors) is set to play Kim Min-jae’s best friend, who has been studying for, taking, and failing her civil servant exam for the past three years. Cha’s role in all of this is as a small entertainment company CEO, who used to be a hotshot manager back in the day. For years, he’s harbored a one-sided love for Yoon Son-ha’s (Six Flying Dragons) character, who was a famous singer a long time ago.

For a while, the plot included a storyline about a top celebrity father who suddenly vanishes and then comes back twenty years later to reunite with his son. But I’m not sure how that aspect will fit in with the current cast of characters, or even whether that melo arc will be kept with the addition of funny-guy Cha to this project.

This project will also be a collaboration with Green Snake Media’s PD Seo Soo-min, the veteran variety PD who was was the initial director behind The Producers, which attempted to bring mockumentary-style drama to dramaland. It’ll be PD Yoo’s first foray into the drama genre, and also Cha’s first project as a producer (in real life); but while he’s primarily an actor, he’s a funny entertainer all around and has been a regular in the variety world for decades, culminating in his current position as one of the core cast members of 1 Night, 2 Days.

In an interview that they did for The Best Hit, Cha and PD Yoo spoke about how they have defined their respective roles. Cha will be the main liaison with the actors, directing the performance aspect because he has more experience with dramas, while PD Yoo will take care of editing and production because he knows how to pull out the best emotional gems from each scene. Cha had always wanted to try his hand at being behind the camera, but he thought it might have been beyond his level of ability.

So he was surprised but immediately interested when PD Yoo asked him to help him out with The Best Hit. After a period of deliberation, he decided that he wanted to take on this challenge of doing a drama and serving in a new capacity, and his decision was tipped in that direction largely because he really likes PD Yoo. He believes that Yoon Shi-yoon, who is also a 1N2D cast member, probably signed on because of PD Yoo as well. On the other side, PD Yoo could think of no better person to help him transition from the variety to the drama world than Cha Tae-hyun, who has been such an important figure in both.

KBS’s The Best Hit is planned to be broadcast this May.

ASTRO member Cha Eun Woo has been cast in upcoming KBS 2TV drama 'The Best Hit' (working title) for the role of MJ.  Having acted in various web-based dramas, this will the idol star's first time appearing in a television drama. The MJ character is a top star with a rebellious attitude.

Actress Lee Se Young has been cast in 'The Best Shot'!

 

The variety-drama will be produced by former '1 Night 2 Days' producer Yoo Ho Jin and actor Cha Tae Hyun. It'll be a similar genre to KBS's 'Producer', which was also considered a variety-drama. She'll be playing Choi Woo Seung, the female lead who is best friends with Kim Min Jae's character.
