the movie is very mellow. you can tell through their facial expressions

how they feel which i love. but i wish there were more actions.

AS actually has mixed reviews from professionals and critiques. Majority is still quite positive, especially those coming from the various film festivals.

Here's an in depth thought on AS shared by ding dong a chinese fan translated by happiebb. I've deleted some parts (first and last) which i think is not important in this thread. i hope bb won't mind :)

So, was April Snow a nice movie to watch or not?

In the eyes of someone like me who's sort of half a movie fanatic,

April Snow is an excellent movie.

It's not as immediately captivating as Christmas in August,

but on the other hand, it's more delicate, it's deeper and it's more matured.

But it's not the sort of movie that's "nice" to watch

[bb: as in the commercial sense, you know, visually tantalizing]

Unless the audience has very strong sympathy for the characters

or have strong personal feelings towards the movie,

for instance, maybe you have gone through a similar experience,

or maybe you're someone who suffers from "losing control of one's basic instincts syndrome"

when faced with Yong Joon or Son Yejin

[there are possibly quite a few of these here, ya?],

this is not a movie that would touch or move the average movie-goers to tears.

Instead, be it the director or the cast

[particularly Yong Joon, he's such a perfect match to the director's style!],

they appeared to have deliberately chosen a clinical approach.

By clinical, I mean to view, treat and manage things calmly and coldly,

and as if trying to make less of a big issue.

This theme [of adultery], which has been scripted and filmed to death by countless movies,

has been crafted into a play of irony and sarcasm here in April Snow.

Of course, April Snow is not a movie that's so deep that it's hard to understand,

in fact it even hints at a little humour.

The movie kicked out and removed anything dramatic or unnatural,

it did not even mention the word "love"!

Perhaps it had been influenced by the name of one of the key shooting sites,

the café named The Bicycle Thief

I keep thinking that Director Hur has an inclination towards

the *Italian Neo-Realism school of movies.

Well, I happened to have some materials on this area,

there are five key creative principles in Neo-Realism:

1. Themes that depict a typical scene from the society

2. Themes or stories that depict ordinary lives

3. The use of non-professional actors

4. The use of actual locations

5. The practice of not passing judgement or making conclusions,

leaving it to the audience to do their own thinking and judging.

Other than the third point, April Snow fulfilled the rest of the criteria.

And interestingly, Director Hur's strength is to turn the stars back into ordinary folks!

Therefore I think that this movie is like the majority of modern art,

the whole point of it is not to show how "beautiful" it is,

and not to make it "interesting or nice to watch¡" for the audience.

Instead, the movie invites the audience to think,

to participate in the creation and making of the movie.

No matter whether you like the movie or not,

your own thinking has become a part of the movie,

it has become an essential and indispensable part of the entire creative work.

Comments and reviews, good or otherwise,

so long as it's sincere and from the heart,

are equally important to the movie.

So, sisters, when it's your turn to watch the movie,

do relax and "feel" the movie.

If you love it, well and good.

And if you don't love it, so be it.

willenette, it is still showing i saw it for the 3rd time yesterday.

watched the movie yesterday w/ the hunnie pandas (LBH ladies) and liezle (of course!)

I don't know the director or the (absent) scriptwriter

or any of their works so i wouldn't be able to put this into the right context...

but looking at the movie per se...

it is... different... to say the least from the usual cinematic style that we got used to seeing...

according to liezle it is an art film...and it was both loved and hated by critics...

well it was heavily art directed that's for sure...

and the movie definitely has metaphoric thrust

in fact it was so steeped in metaphors, it was already almost the equivalent

of "abstract" as a painting genre... :P

good thing liezle was with us to enlighten us as we went along...

my problem w/ this style is that i'm not a creative person and i'm not the "feeling" type...

i tend to look for the rationale behind everything...

in the absence of logical and clear rationalizations, w/c I automatically look for

the emotions should be more palpable for me to appreciate it…

more passion…more overt show of feelings…

as lee ji woo (iameeh) said, we were brought up watching american films where

almost everything is brought out in the open if not w/ words then w/ action…

but of course the far eastern culture is way different and you really have to

feel your way around, second guess and read between the lines a lot…

i always term my penchant for watching k-dramas and movies

as an indulgence in the fantasies of syrupy schmaltziness, crude psychology, repressed sexualities/passions and yes even fake orgasms…

Well, I got intoxicated in all those repressed passions in this movie…

the subtleties and the hidden meanings can tax a mind that just wanted to be entertained.

When the challenge was presented, however, I relished the idea of wrestling thru all those symbolisms and come up with real, insightful realizations about life, love and human nature…but still, what conclusions I drew were kinda trite and even shallow…

but then again in my ignorance about art and life…even w/ all those metaphors

flying around all over the place…i might just have missed the real message altogether…

if indeed there was one other than the more obvious...

BYJ and SYJ were brilliant by the way…

I saw the movie and I have to agree with some of you that it was just OKAY. It definitely was slow with very little dialogue. I think the topic was very interesting, but I wish there was more character development. ;)

Hi thesnowcrane! Sarang posted this in BYJ thread. I'm not really sure if this is the movie since the DVD of the movie is soon to be released in Dec 29. I suggest the you watch it in a more clear quality for you to clearly notice the actors facial expressions.

The 'Meeting of Yong' made up of 54 fans of BYJ who watched the film 'April Snow' has published a booklet called 'April Snow-Memory Note' on November 25.

In this booklet of total of 42 pages written originally in Japanese with its Korean translation on the opposite page, contained thoughts on the film by 54 BYJ fans including one with a pen-name of 'Boboli', etc. The thoughts are arranged in the order of 【Miscellaneous thoughts】,【Favorite scenes】, & 【Memory】, where they wrote freely about their views on the film, a particular favorite scene, and own memory on those scenes, respectively.

The twelve BYJ fans from the 'Meeting of Yong' headed by Shimiz Toshio (Film Critic) plan to visit the BOF office at Cheongdam-Dong, Seoul in the afternoon on December2, and hold a delivery event of handing over this booklet to BOF officials. Also on December 11, they plan to hold a celebrating event for the publication in Tokyo.

Er.. maybe I'm the only person here that didn't get it.. but was it SYJ that was in the car beside BYJ at the very last scene?

And I don't quite understand where did both of them went to somewhere in the middle of the movie where first SYJ got hit by a woman then BYJ got a punch from a guy. Who are these people?

This movie seemed to want to be the korean version of 'In the mood for love'.. but artistically, it's not there and logically, this movie doesn't make much sense at all to me..

The accident had caused the death of a fairly young, married man. As they were not sure who was driving the car, the guy from the insurance company (earlier scene at the hospital), told both BYJ and SYJ to pay their respects to the victim's place. It is hoped that with this gesture, it may be easier to settle the claims by the victim's family later. (The insurance guy had asid: The victim was so young. It will not be easy to settle).

This is an observation movie. Many things are not said.

As for metaphors, well the long journey to the victim's place can be considered as "Going Out" as well.

(The Korean and Chinese title is Going Out).

We had some fun with the following Q&A. you may be able to understand the movie better if you can answer the questions.

April Snow is more like an art movie. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

Thanks for all the replies.. really appreciate that.. the truth be told, i'm not too sure which part of this is artistic.. cinematography wise, it can't be compared to Spring Day. The backdrop is nothing special and costume wise, it's ordinary to the very last inch. W/o big names like BYJ and SYJ, this movie would have come and gone w/o a trace.

The subs are already available at kloofy, and was also uploaded to kdwluverz, naynay123. It's an auto subbed version, which literally translate the dialogue word by word from korean, so doesn't always make sense if you put them in a sentence, but it's better than nothing really.. so enjoy..

The DVD ripped version is out for those of you who still need it. Its up in creidesca's clubbox with subtitles, decent ones but the timing is off by a bit and some grammar problems. I think kloofy should be releasing a better version soon.

Anyway, I finished dling it but still haven't watched it. I'll give my review sometime after Monday.

Here's leftover links to the bootleg version which I dled a day before today and didn't have time to watch either. Darn finals!!

Should've just waited for the DVD rip to come out. Oh well! Lucky for you guys :P

I just finished watching this movie! I agree that it's an "okay" movie and I'm kinda disappointed coz there wasn't much "action." But after reading a few replies on this thread, I think it just makes sense that some people call this movie an observational one coz it was. :D BYJ and SYJ (haha just noticed the YJ's ) were awesome by the way. :) I just read the questions and answers (on page 2) [link] from the site Joon's family. Hooray now I REALLY LIKE this movie!!! I might even watch it and pay more attention. :D

i just watched this today...

i had no problem with the actors, but the storyline was...erm...it wasn't boring really...more like, monotonous. i spent the entire first half waiting for smthing big to happen, something that would liven the whole thing up...

it was an okay movie...i was jst shocked with all the love scenes. i knew there would be one, but i wasn't expecting two  and what was shocking about it was that it was totally unexpected. i mean, one moment u see them walking down the street and the next..wham! i was scratching my head by then
