With a number of child abuse cases rattling South Korea in the last few months, a new TV series delves into the subject by exploring mother-daughter relationships, which, according to director Kim Chul-kyu, can be the most dynamic of all human relations.

The 16-episode "Mother" on tvN, the Korean remake of a Japanese TV series of the same title, will depict the complicated, multifaceted relations between mothers and daughters, the director said at a media briefing at a hotel in southern Seoul on Thursday.

"I don't want to talk about how great maternal love is. The drama will shed light on various mother-daughter relationships that can be so warm and beautiful, but painful and ugly at the same time," said the director of "Chicago Typewriter" and "On the Way to the Airport."

"Plus, I hope the drama raises awareness about child abuse and that no child is neglected or abused."

The drama centers on the relationship between cool-headed elementary school teacher Soo-jin, played by Lee Bo-young, who is determined never to become a mother due to her complex relations with her own mother, and her student Hye-na. In spite of herself, Soo-jin is drawn to the 7-year-old girl who tries to hide that she is being mentally and physically abused by her single mother.

Soo-jin decides to take her troubled student with her on a trip, without telling her mother.

"Since I gave birth, every child abuse case has caught my attention. I was compelled to do this drama," Lee said, clearly having a lump in her throat. "I felt responsible for raising public awareness about such cases." She married actor Ji Sung in February 2013 and gave birth to a baby girl in 2015.

"The fact that the original drama is very good and has been very popular was a secondary concern to me," she said.

"Mother" is considered one of the most anticipated TV series this year. Celebrated screenwriter Jeong Seo-Gyeong adapted the original Japanese drama for the remake. She wrote the scripts for "The Handmaiden," "Lady Vengeance" and "Thirst," all helmed by award-winning director Park Chan-wook.

"I was a bit overwhelmed in the beginning because I had to write 16 episodes. But once I got down to it, I realized there were enough room for me to create more stories for each character," Jeong said.

A mother of two herself, the writer said a spate of horrible child abuse incidents spurred her to take the job. But rather than talking about the evil of child abuse, she wants to put more focus on how strong and resilient the victims are.

"The story is about strong motherly love but also about a strong child," she said. "Hye-na has had many terrible acts done to her by adults, but she is resilient enough to overcome her plight on her own."

The Wednesday-Thursday drama will premiere at 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 24.

I did not know child abuse was a thing in Korea , but it tuns out to be one of the hidden dirty secrets like other countries < it has been going up by half each year ...with official finding it hard to interfere because it clashes with tradition ...there has been at least a couple of murder cases by parents

its an issue all over the world and I am curious to know how will Koreans react to a drama that targets social awareness

[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Mother - Drama"

2018/01/20 | 132 views |

You can love or hate the remakes of Korean drama, but they are here to stay and they have the potential to evolve into solid works of their own. Choosing a critically acclaimed Japanese drama to do an adaptation of is not an easy decision, but "Mother - Drama" has a lot going for it. Will this manage to meet the great potential it has built up so far?

Premise

Originally an Ornithology specialist, Soo-jin (Lee Bo-young) becomes a substitute teacher at an elementary school. It is there that she meets Hye-na (Heo Yool-I) and quickly discovers the little girl's life of abuse. Soo-jin decides to run away with Hye-na in order to spare her from domestic violence.

The Worrying

Screen 1 - Soo-jinScreen 2 - Hye-na

Remake Risks

From the practical, such as the episode number, to the cultural, such as changing tones and approach, there are a lot of elements to consider here. For one, Lee Bo-young and Heo Yool-I have to form great chemistry and match some hefty performances. The creators need to capture the heart of the original without making a carbon copy.

Drama Vs. Film

Writer Jeong Seo-kyeong's long-time film collaborations with Park Chan-wook are quite the credentials and while I do not doubt the writer's talent, the difference in media and the last-minute nature of Korean drama filming are tricky things to tackle, I imagine even more so for the first time. Can the writer adapt to and keep up with this environment?

The Reassuring

Screen 3 - Soo-jin and Hye-naScreen 4 - Soo-jin and Hye-na

Capable Creators

Worries over time and production management aside, writer Jeong Seo-kyeong and director Kim Cheol-gyoo have some mighty impressive titles between them. Their content is diverse in genres and it is unique enough in its respective industries that they could bring a fresh type of drama content together.

Leading Duo

While the chemistry and Heo Yool-I's acting skills are unknown factors at the moment, a powerful make-believe mother and daughter duo is the very core of "Mother - Drama". If those things work and we have a solid effort from the supporting and guest cast, this drama will be a great ride.

Closing Thoughts

Handling abuse takes a lot of tact, great respect and solid writing chops. It is a topic which is sadly too simplified in Korean drama at times, but one which is as timely as ever and everywhere. My hope is that this will be a drama like no other, because this is what it needs to be for the sake of its subject matter. I am nervous, but I love what I see and know so far.

"Mother - Drama" begins its run on January 24th and will air every Wednesday and Thursday at 21:30 KST, on tvN. It is directed by Kim Cheol-gyoo, written by Jeong Seo-kyeong and features Lee Bo-young, Heo Yool-I, Lee Hye-young-I and Lee Jae-yoon.

Premiere Watch: Mother

by girlfriday

premiere_mother.jpg

Mother

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Melodrama
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This has well-made drama written all over it. Lee Bo-young is starring, PD Kim Chul-kyu of the sharply directed Chicago Typewriter and On the Way to the Airport (also My Beautiful Bride and Hwang Jin-yi among his older works) is at the helm, and screenwriter Jung Seo-kyung of The Handmaiden, The Truth Beneath, and Thirst is making her drama debut with this project. That sets the bar pretty high, so the only question is whether I’ll be in the right mood to watch it.

Mother is a remake of the 2010 Japanese drama of the same name, about a teacher who discovers that a young girl is being abused by her mother at home. On an impulse, she decides to kidnap the child and run away, and they form a beautiful mother-daughter bond—an unusual premise, but a fascinating one. The drama explores blood ties, found families, the problematic morality of the teacher’s choice, and mother-daughter relationships of all kinds. It certainly doesn’t sound like a breezy watch, but I expect to be moved by the human drama, and brought to tears by Lee Bo-young. And probably get my heart ripped out by the little girl. Gah, can I handle this?

  • Guest changed the title to [Current Drama 2018] Mother 마더 - Wed-Thu @ 21:30 KST

I am a huge fan of PD Kim Chul-kyu, his dramas are visually superb.  He's really good at pulling emotions, his characters are so often dressed in natural tone and he is a fan of natural lighting too.  Also have always loved LBY.  Will try to watch it.

Good luck to the drama.  It's in good hands.

and like expected also , with every remake comes criticism when compared to the original'

one of the points is something I already mentioned before the broadcast

the age difference between the child actresses , and how it has a different impact

Body image

the original child was between 5 and 6 , and the korean child is 8 to 9

one the reasons the original show was a hit because of this cute baby who will suffer abuse and was called a genius child something, and her age and big eyes cuteness most likely helped her get more sympathy

so there were worries over the fact that the korean is older, the way the child is depcted in the korean version is actually much more subtler than the original ... the korean child sounds like she is wise for her years and has an adult capability to adapt .. and is not cute in appearance  like the audiance regretted mentioning ( ok shallow ppl its about child abuse not pretty babies ) and the child gives a good performance

so

I am supporting the kversion choice of a much older child ... cause the relationship between the two could be more balanced and subtle ... than just choosing a cute big eyes baby to attract sympathy

  • Wow what an intense first episode, the drama shines in its ability to make you feel uncomfortable right from the start.
  • Oh I really want to punch that guy, who can a woman date a guy like that? He is worse than trash, beating a child. And on top, how can she apologize to him for having a child? Like it's a crime.
  • The moment where Hye-Na's mother woke her up and we could see that she sleeps in a suitcase was horrible! How can she sleep in such a thing? You can suffocate in these things. It's a miracle that she hasn't died yet.
  • The moment LBY opened the garbage bag and saw a beaten up HN inside, I can't even imagine what has to go through her mind. That's so disgusting and horrible in SO MANY DIFFERENT ways, it makes me sad and angry. What if she didn't went to their home that night?
How can a human being do such things to someone else? Poor HN.
  • It's the first ep and it's already such a messed up drama. But wow, that's what I call an emotional amazing first episode.

I just finished watching the first episode, and I'm so impressed with what a great start this series is off to.

  • What a beautiful, understated acting job by LBY! She portrayed the cold, emotionally-distant character (which I suspect is totally opposite to her personality in real life) so wonderfully. Then, as the episode progressed, she let us see cracks gradually starting to develop in the emotional barriers (that her character had previously erected around herself) as her relationship with Heo Yool's character deepened. That's great acting.
  • Speaking about Heo Yool, she is a revelation to me. Her acting is just so ... real (for lack of any better word). She made me believe that she is living this story instead of acting it. I can't believe she is a newcomer with no acting experience! Previously, I had hoped for some other, more well-known child actresses for this role, but now, I don't think that any of them could have done a better job than Heo Yool did with this role (at least from what I've seen so far).
  • Ko Sung Hee and the actor playing her boyfriend did great jobs with their characters as well (he deserves a special mention for giving a very creepy, scary performance). I hate their characters already after just one episode, which is a testament to how strong their work was.
  • The cinematography and music are what I would expect from a top tvN production, which is to say they were top-notch.

This is about as good a start as fans could have hoped for IMO (apart from the ratings, but I don't really care about that). Also, I suspect that this story line may be too dark for this to be a big ratings success in Korea, but I think it will do very well with international viewers.

yes I second that heartily  , its a brilliant understated subtle performance between the two

but you need depth of insight to get that'

some are  already criticizing comparing to the original on korean media ( which is a different take and not my cup of tea )

the child has a very adult like characterization and I dig that so , they can have a more subtle relationship than just mothering an adorable baby kind of thing to win sympathy

the difference from the original that this has a more dark somber understated note

@Tango27  Yes, I agree with your take on Heo Yool's character, and I would personally think that if a child has gone through the kind of abuse that her character had gone through and survived, she would be wise beyond her years and would probably be very similar to what Heo Yool's character is in the show.

“Migratory birds fly across oceans… on journeys that are sometimes tens of thousands of kilometers long. And yet, they never lose their way. Rain or snow, day or night… they fly over chilly oceans… without any maps or landmarks to follow as reference. But they always reach their destination, no matter what. Because they have maps and directions, all in their heads.”
