Will write more later... but just quickly re Producer Hou's hint about a 3rd installment. It was a Weibo post he made during the 2018 Drama Excellence Ceremony in which Huang Xiaoming won Exemplary Star of the Year award: 2018#电视剧品质盛典# 《琅琊榜》制片人@侯鸿亮 :谢谢观众的支持,我们努力把《琅琊榜》第三部做好!!【这就许给你们了啊啊啊!!】 2018#DramaExcellenceCeremony# <NirvanaInFire> Producer Hou Hongliang: Thank you for everyone's support. Hopefully the third will be as good as the first or at least like the 2nd, or maybe join of the two! Every installment has their uniqueness, love them both. liddi
As a disclaimer - we only have Producer Hou's Weibo post from 2 years ago that they plan to produce a 3rd installment. I've not heard of any solid news since, that production has started for NiF3. Daylight Production's list of recent works include the currently airing 清平乐 Serenade of Peaceful Joy with Wang Kai and Maggie Jiang, 我是余欢水 If There is No Tomorrow, and the yet-to-be-aired 大江大水2 Like a Flowing River 2. No sign of NiF3 yet. Nonetheless, I keep fingers and toes crossed that Producer Hou would be a man of his word, and that we will see a 3rd installment one day. They have I think four dramas slated to be filmed (I can't remember all their names so don't quote me), two to air (one is Like a Flowing River 2), and one drama that seem to be stuck in pre-production hell. None of them are historical. Ode to Joy should have a 3, because there were three books, but I doubt they can get all the 5 ladies again. I don't think NiF needs a sequel tbh, NiF1 didn't need one, but NiF2 functioned as a prequel as well as a sequel so I'm glad it was made.

I did like how they linked old meichang su home to the underground of pingzhing's home...that is where mei changsu used to meet the prince... Wonder why Fei Liu (Mei Changsu's teenage bodyguard) did not end up in this sequel.

We do need a third sequel to see what happened to the rest of Mei Changsu's army. What happened to Gong Yu, Fei Liu, General Nie and his wife Xiadong. We also want to know what happened to Princess Niahuang and the Sunshine boys (Yunji Jingrui, etc.)

It is a shame that Liu Yijun did not make a cameo appearance as well, when so many other familiar faces from NiF did: Assistant Director Wang Hong as Li Gang (NiF1), prison officer (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents Casting Director Wei Wei as Tong Lu (NiF1), a general of the Changlin army (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents Zhang Lingxin as Xia Dong (NiF1), Madam Qi (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents Zhang Yanyan as Grand Princess Liyang (NiF1), Sister Yun (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents Qiao Xin as Yuwen Nian (NiF1), Xun Anru (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents Chen Lina as Consort Hui (NiF1), Puyang Ying's mother (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents Zhu Mengyao as Consort Jing's maid Xiao Li (NiF1), Pei Er (NiF2) Reveal hidden contents @Wotad Reveal hidden contents For me, the Chinese version Bu Bu Jing Xin or Scarlet Heart with Liu Shi Shi and Nicky Wu will always be the definitive version, and the most faithful to the book. As I mentioned before, that was one of three dramas that drove me to buy its corresponding novel. Just be prepared emotionally. The Korean version is well adapted into the Goryeo period from the source material, but editing was a a major issue (do watch the SBS version which is far better than its international counterpart), and pacing was also a problem as they tried to cover too much in too little time towards the end. However, performances are strong and the conclusion just as devastating. You might want to watch both and compare Wonder why they did not use Leo Wu/Fei Liu from the first Nirvana in Fire to play a character in this sequel. He was really good.
