Ok this got me, I didn't know about that ...but now that I think about it, it makes sense... I will watch it keeping this on mind :)

My husband who almost never watches C drama loves NiF. He must have watched at least 7 times right through now. I got him on to it because I really wanted to talk to someone about it when it was over. Once the show got going for him, he was hooked. He's recommended it to all kinds of people and he's the one who brings it up in conversations from time to time.

It is a very talky drama but if you can persevere through it, the payoff is very satisfying. My favourite part is from Ep. 30- to the end.

My issue with PA was the ending is clearly not complete i dont know if it was left open on purpose or something but ending as soon as she awakens her power clearly means s2 right?

I gave this a 7.5 due to that ending compared to NIF which i gave a 10 because i loved everything about it i hope NIF 2 and Tribes are good.

Well, there's no word yet that we're getting S2. Lots of rumours but I have my doubts. There was definitely serious mismanagement of this drama especially towards the end. All the elements of a good drama were there but something went awry in the post-production of it.

That would be the only reason why I'd want another season of PA -- so that we can get loads of ZLY's CQ and LGX's YWY repeating that chemistry and taking it even further. I don't have much confidence in much else but those two should really be in more dramas/movies together.

The only reason why I watched NIF was because someone on the internet said it was like The Count of Monte Cristo so I knew what I was in for. (And the Count of Monte Cristo is my favourite revenge story of all time) But I loved the show from the 3rd or 4th episode onwards. The first episode was a little confusing but once MCS started implementing his schemes, it was a great ride.

And of course, I'm a political junkie too. I love watching people manoeuvre politically.

Yes. I like a good revenge story and NIF was a good one. It just took me a while to figure out what was happening and I had to watch the first episode twice before I could move on. I do like a good historical political drama. There is a fine line that is not easy to capture. To present historical political dramas as suspenseful and capture your attention fully. NIF is one of them. I also enjoyed Six Flying Dragons, Tree With Deep Roots, and the political conflicts in Empress Ki.

I'm doing my best trying to get into it :(  even yesterday I watched an episode with an open mind, I like I'm just not that into it.

Oh no I won't get into the trap of talking about our ships :D this would take long... still I think Ye hua/ Bai Qian was just perfection.... but then again we have Zhao Li Ying in PA!!  She's like the goddess of chemistry with her leads, you won't be able to  say that there's no chemistry between the leads when she's the main actress (fangirling) :grimace:  just look at Legend of Zu, awful drama but what saved it for me was the amazing chemistry between WC/ZLY  .

Legend of Zu was so awful and after it ended I wanted to kill someone but I kept watching bc OTP :bawling:

WC/ZLY have great chemistry. Thankfully The Mystic NIne redeemed their chemistry.

The difference between NIF and PA is that NIF had superior editing. Even with the open ending they could have edit it differently and the story would have seem much better. I just give it credit for keeping me hooked to the drama and tbh I enjoyed all the secret underworld spy things.

I have lukewarm hopes for NIF 2 since I just feel like the story wont have the same impact. However, an okay story with a good team behind it can be good.

OTP was great on The Mystic Nine, I enjoyed the little moments they had a lot.

I was just thinking about that on the last episode I saw, it's really god and the music I actually like it a lot, I might have to wait a bit till I get hooked.

This is right, I still go back to watch the last episode of Journey of Flowers just for how beautiful it was.

Mystic Nine OTP is everything. I still love them so much <333

every once in a while I watch that scene during the last episode when she curses him. That was one of my favorite moments of the drama, it had so much impact in my mind. I even learned her lines

Now that you gave me a new perspective of NIF  I'll try to get to episode  30 :) maybe by then I'll like it!.

:( I seriously don't know what they were thinking with that one, though I kinda liked the twist of events when he discovers everything... still that drama made me ship WC/ZLY  so.. as bad as it is... I could rewatch it just for their moments.

They are so cute there, they really show how comfortable they are with each other :D  more when the whole fight scene was improvised and they were just playing around!  It's really cute.

Well my husbad is the same.... I tried to have him watch PA with me... the first episode really because I clicked on it and it seemed interesting.... he really gave me this bored look and something along the lines like..."seriously"?  I couldnt stop laughing and he thanked me I didnt have to torture him through it.  So I am kinda glad I didnt  make him watch PA with me....hahaha I wouldve ruined it for him!!!

Regarding the ending of the show....honestly, I did not mind.  That was how YY's love was, silent, intense, brooding, and always willing to let go as long as she's alive and well.  That last push he did for her upwards towards the surface, that really pulled at the heartstrings because that embodied really who he was FOR her... someone who will always put her before anything else.  For Chu Qiao it was never about love, she was busy surviving or helping others survive...thats why throughout the whole show-- her past was never the forefront of her journey, it was like an afterthought(or dismissal thought)--and when given the chance by Mr. Wu to go find her people-- well she didnt feel ANY connection or inclination to do so.  IF there is a second season-- I just want more of her backstory -- her backstory wouldve carried the entire show through because it really did seem interesting.

Also one more thing.... Doesnt it seem silly how the CORE people that had planned the massacre of YX's family are still alive ?  The Emperor of course, the Liang Spies esp the Princes, that Dong Fi guy( that schemer behind the scenes that was with YXs dad then with the Prince Xiang).  So what the heck did he even accomplish?  I mean he got the small flies, didnt even touch the jackpot.  Waste space I tell ya...haha!!

Thanks for all the other recommended shows--- I dont know ANY of those actresses or actors--except LGX because he came on in one of my fav movies--Swordmaster!  I always prefer historical dramas though-- so for the time being I will be sticking to that.

Oh yeah the Count of Monte Cristo... thats also one of my favs...its been awhile since Ive watched it though!

I also wonder about the budget of NIF and PA.... perhaps it seemed like NIF just had a higher more professional team that did a superb job whereas PA--welll it was for me between B movie quality and home video editing .

I didn't even bother trying to get the husband to watch PA with me. I had an inkling that he wouldn't like it because the political side of things was very unserious. The example you cited is proof of that. Sadly the espionage -- jiang hu angle which I liked and thought had a lot of potential also didn't go anywhere.

Although I liked the framing of the icy lake scene (it's very pretty too) and share your views regarding what that poignant scene embodied in terms of the romance, it's the lack of visual payoff that we're all lamenting. Those of us who rooted for XingYue from start to finish waited a long time for her to finally acknowledge her feelings openly. It's not that she didn't know that she had feelings for him until that moment. I think she always knew how she felt about YWY. I've been chatting with @rampantwolfhound about this very thing. We both agree that the pain for us viewers is in the fact that we will never get to see them sharing everyday intimacies as a couple. We won't hear her say that she loves him and see her respond freely when they kiss. That's the biggest disappointment.

But when I rant about the ending, I include the episodes that led up to the finale. Compared to them, the finale was probably reasonably good even if the editing was a dog's breakfast. I just thought that towards the end they were dragging things out for the sake of it particularly with CQ and YX.

I found Sword Master on Netflix and it's pretty good. A visual feast from start to finish.

All the shows I recommended are historical. Vigilantes in Masks is set during the Ming dynasty... it's really good. A Chinese version of Leverage. My second favourite China-made drama of all time. You'll fall in love with Wallace Huo.

As for the Count of Monte Cristo, I recommend that people read the book. It's so good. There's a strong spiritual side that doesn't get looked at in the adaptations. It's over a hundred years old and so it's free.

The best thing about the Count of Monte Cristo is that you can't say it lacks of something,  it has a bit of everything! Love, revenge, friendship, adventure, regret, etc., and it doesn't get tedious at any point.

Chapter 14's up at FFN and AO3. This week: XingYue gets busted; Xiang does not approve.

Thanks so much for this... I am done reading it and then reread some other parts.  You know how after the incident with her Xiuli army and her talk with Miss Zu.... in the drama and also in her story... it was mentioned that she was the only person who can stop YX from going totally Darkseid.... I liked your version better because at this juncture...she sees she has NO influence on him...not her, Miss Zu, Mr Wu and I even wonder if Ajing has any influnce as well.    Anyways in the drama-- it almost seemed like to me her arrogant attitude ( though I doubt she thought it was that) wouldnt let her see pass the signs that he was beyond her influence.  If she had realized this sooner-- perhaps her journey to finding about her past wouldve been discovered.  Looking forward to more writings and keep it up!!!

So Ive got a lingering question... As Im reading snippets, exerpts, summaries of the english translation...Seems like she was a special agent who go transported back?  It also seems like she still has her memories about her past life?  Geeez cant imagine what it must be like to be in the body of an 8 year old with a wisdom of a 30 year old special agent and have limitations of being a slave.... absolutely infuriating I might think!  If this is the case, it explains her resilient nature-- and wisdom beyond her years and also experience of her previous life!

:( I might be the only one in the cdrama world that is having a hard time finishing Nirvana in Fire... I like it but I think Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms spoiled a lot of cdramas for me...  I was actually surprised that I loved PA but I'm sure at the beginning it was mostly because I was following all of Zhao Li Ying's dramas,  now I'm obsessed with it reading the translations and fanfics.

I think the other cdrama that really got me was Love O2O  :(, but I seriously want to enjoy Nirvana in Fire like I enjoyed the other ones but it seems like it's just not my thing. I'm still on episode  20 after more than a month since I started watching it, not sure why. On the other hand I bingewatched Journey of Flower and Ten Miles in one week... so maybe I just need to give it a chance.

NIF is very cerebral (with the main driver being a long-plotted revenge and reclaiming one's honor), while 10 Miles is very emotional (with the main driver being Yehua's romance). So I think it really depends on what you're looking for. I found NIF refreshing b/c it doesn't have the usual court women scheming and there isn't a bunch of pointless romantic subplots, which 10 Miles has (BFJ and DH)

I think you nailed it!   Also,  10 miles was one of the first cdramas that I actually didn't find myself skipping scenes or anything, so it must be the impression it gave me which was pretty good, I even bought the book after a while lol.

I have to say that I'm currently on episode  30 of NIF... and I'm kinda enjoying the development... so that's a good thing!  :)

Absolutely correct.... definitely nailed it and took the words right out of my finger tips.... hahaha!  Im so glad you stuck it out and enjoying it... it got me hooked from start to finish really.... as soon as I was able to get past the confusion of whose who... i enjoyed it immensely.  I watched it about a year ago and just recently went back to rewatch it again... and like I mentioned... this was my first C drama and so it was a huge deal for me. The best part of it was--- I did not skip any parts or episode!  If I knew Chinese I wouldve went right to a bookstore and bought one already and keep it in my collection!

Besides the obvious characters to love in NIF.. my other fav one was Consort Jing.... she just radiated so much poise and wisdom... her influence on her son was beautiful... I loved that son-mother relationship.  Recently I wondered in PA... if Yan Xuns mother had stayed... what type of influence would she have had on him?  Would she encouraged her son to trust YWY?  Because on the Platform--she did trust him in his limited capacity.  Yan Xun's mother kinda and sorta reminded me of Consort Jing.... Though I dont know YX's mothers on her apitutde for politics... but maybe she knew alot...who knows!!  Enjoy the rest of the show and phewww I am sooo glad I am not the only one who really took to NIF... I was dying to talk to someone about it...hahaha .  Seems like we have quite a few here that really enjoyed the show!!

I skipped tons of sections from 10 miles when I initially watched it because I found FJ and DH romance subplots really irritating (also did not care for the Ghost Tribe princes / princess as the source of the power for the trapped king because I couldn't understand why the king didn't just kill his kids before the battle w/ Moyuan in the first place so he could fight MY w/ the maximum superpower). Also FJ and DH are very different from the book (Pillow Book, which follows FJ & DH romance), and I actually found the PB book to be much much more compelling than FJ and DH in 10 miles b/c I thought DH was portrayed as being too indecisive and annoying in the drama, while in the PB, he's super sexy and awesome like YH, but in a very different way. (But QQ/YH is much more compelling in the drama than in the book, except for their first sex scene (in the Squid Palace) because that one's much better done in the book and made more sense given than QQ is so much older than YH and came from a place that's more sexually /romantically open.)

its hard to read the translated stuff i just feel like i dont know whats going on because characters are different names or new characters etc..

I'm enjoying the translations and recaps,  they changed the names of the characters from the PA book, so in the book is Zhuge Yue and in the drama is Yuwen Yue, but they are the same. They also changed the name of the dynasty I believe.

Yes! I agree with that, I actually loved that about the book, that it didn't include the FJ/DH romance but that those were the PB!  That's also one of the reasons I'm following the PA translations, there's so much that the drama didn't cover :D I can't wait till they get to the lake scene and the rest of the story.

What lake scene?

I read both already in the official translation version. I liked PB better because it did a better job balancing out FJ/DH. 10 Miles sort of lost the appeal of YH in the book, and I must say that as interesting as QQ is, she isn't narrated to be that fascinating in 10 Miles. She felt almost persona-less in the narrative.
