“Romantic Doctor Kim” Promises Drama And Romance In New Trailers

SBS’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama “Romantic Doctor Kim” is promising lots of medical drama and romance in their new trailers.

The first trailer centers on the titular character played by Han Suk Kyu. His character is a skilled doctor certified in three different medical specialties. However, it appears as though there will be some clashes regarding his methods as other individuals question his identity.

As for the second trailer, it focuses more on Seo Hyun Jin and Yoo Yeon Seok. The pair encounters various difficulties but it looks like romance is definitely in store for them.

The first episode of “Romantic Doctor Kim” is slated to air on November 7 and can be watched on Viki!

I remember these photos were among the first few bts pics that fans posted on RDTK. It is a important emotional scene I guess to take 2 hours to film focus on building up the inner emotions. Looking forward to see what sparks will be created in these two. Nov 7 is only 2 days away.

I'm not sure how true it is, but I get from Chinese website that he will be Dr Yoon Seo-Jung's fiance in the drama, they mention about him in October already, but korean news only posted now and just mentioned that he is also a doctor and head in the hospital. Guess we will know soon come Monday!

About the question “Medical drama again?” PD Yoo said “Doctor(drama) put focus on the story of youth, but we get into the world of medical occupation more deeply. It is the story of people with passionate hearts who’s goal are giving all they got to their works. I think the viewers want to see the people who agonize and make an fierce effort in where they are. Since their love and conflicts are dissolved into the drama, viewers will find one heart-warming drama.” PD Yoo is excited about casts. “Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim has always been in great projects ever since I dreamed to become a PD. He is still the legend. Whenever I see him he reminds me of the time my heart was passionate so I am shooting excited.”

It is first time in 21 years for Han Suk-kyu doing a modern show (plays Teacher Kim). His last project was Sageuk ‘Secret Door’ in 2014. He recollected while he was questioning “What is an actor” he got an offer for ‘Romantic Doctor’ and accepted it because he agreed to the production intention of “With What people live?” About working with other actors, he wants to add ‘co-workers’ to the 3 elements of a play – actor, audience, and scripts. “They, seniors and juniors all have same goal and dream, and only difference among them is who started first.” He felt troubled thinking acting is ‘fake’ and himself who plays a character is ‘fake’ but convinced that audience can feel many things by the doctor portrayed by teacher Kim and the story Kim accomplishing something with people around him.
Han also mentioned comedian Jung Sung-ho who does impression of him. “I was worried what if people laugh at me acting because of Jung Sung-ho. I am paying attention to intonation and such.” (Upon hearing this, Comedian Jung Sung-ho said “I am forever grateful to Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim. I am who I am now thanks to his voice. If he felt uncomfortable because of me, I hope he forgives me thinking I just did it to make a living as a father of 4 children. I do tons of impressions but the thing people want to hear the most is impression of him.”)

Seo Hyun-jin plays a hot-blooded doctor Yeon Seo-jung who has bright personality and treats patients with passion and earnest. Seo said “She is a person who chose her occupation to get approval from people. But when she meets Teacher Kim, she learns the real reason why she chose the occupation and how to live.” As to why she picked this project Seo said “I wanted to do a professional drama. This is my first medical genre. I flung myself into the work without knowing it would be this hard. Compared to other genre, there are 3 or 4 times more stuff to memorize. I do repeating practice. First goal was to memorize the structure of man(Anatomy) but couldn’t make it. I keep practicing so that at least I can do finger skills to certain degree. I heard many good things about PD-nim and Writer-nim. Also how great I could work with Han Suk-kyu and Yoo Yeon-suk.” PD Yoo said about Seo, “Seo Hyun-jin is an actress who does clean acting which I like the best. She expresses what she has inside without using technique or habits. She is a good actress who can make you feel realistic even when it sounds cheesy.”

Yoo Yeon-suk also talked about the reason why he picked this drama. “MY BF Son Ho-joon praised production team after working with PD Yoo, and I worked with the writer on ‘Gu Family Book’ which had good scripts. When I heard Teacher Kim was Han Suk-kyu sunbae-nim and Yoo Seo-jung was played by Seo Hyun-jin, I thought “I must do it no matter what”. Also he recalled his debut project ‘General Hospital 2’ where he prepared but never had chance to use his medical knowledge. “I actually had training in the hospital and watched the surgery, but didn’t have a chance to show it in the drama. So I personally thought I might be able to resolve the regrets from that time.” PD Yoo said about his casting, “Writer-nim said she wishes to see the image of youth who suffers with illness called life from Kang Dong-joo. Yoo Yeon-suk who has full of curiosity and energy of healthy young man infuses live-feel to Kang Dong-joo with his spirit.” Previously PD Yoo said, “I wonder if new image of Yoo Yeon-suk will be created by this drama. If you think Chilbongi played melo and sweet creating the first-love image who made your heart fluttered, Kang Dong-joo is young man who is unsociable, difficult and butt-heads in this drama, but this role really seems to fit him. I don’t know because I am not a woman, but he has good reaction on the set.”

Yes he will. Not sure if others realise it but actually yesterday SBS first uploaded an 8minutes plus highlight video before taking it down and replace it with just the 6 minutes one :/ (but I didn't even get to download that one ㅠㅠ It has more scenes, like the Dong Joo x Seo Jung at the hospital entrance, Dong Joo sitting by Seo Jung's bed and  talking to the unconscious her after surgery, etc)

But in the deleted highlight video, there was a scene of Jang Hyuk Jin proposing to Seo Hyun Jin / Seo Jung in the car before their car was hit in an accident.

And even before, in RDTK DC Gallery's list of roles & description, his role was described as "loving Yoon Seo Jung fakely" D:

So the chinese fans are right that Jan Hyuk Jin is the fiance, so I wonder what happen to him if Seo Hyun Jin is injured quite badly. *curious curious* Wonder why he loved YSJ fakely? Ah sorry!! I confused Jang Hyuk Jin with Tae In Ho. It was not JHJ who is Seo Jung's fiance. It was Tae In Ho in the highlight video whom proposed to Seo Jung. He was the one who 'loved Seo Jung fakely'. JHJ is playing another role. 

I think Tae In Ho who played as Seo Jung's fiance loved her fakely, probably because Seo Jung might come from a privileged background / family member of the big hospital owners, maybe? And that could explain why Seo Jung became a doctor to gain recognition from people / wants someone's approval.

Then where did Yang Se-Jong came from? Saw that he is not on that list but he is in the press con? bec his Father(the hospital director in the drama) cannot come to press con so he came? hahaha just kidding wonder what role he has and the relationship with Seo-Jung since they ask them to take photo at the press con. So many questions waiting to be answered!

@angel2013  teehee. I wonder about the new guy too. He could be someone that have interest in Seo Jung as well? And if my guess that SJ is some important figure's family member is correct, it is also possible that the hospital director is setting his son up with SJ. Haha.  

I wonder if there are K-fans or C-fans who managed to download the 8 minutes highlight video before it was taken down. ㅠㅠ the scene where Dong Joo x Seo Jung were at the hospital entrance was pretty ♡ And it was amusing to see the prickly Dong Joo go all mellow when looking over Seo Jung and talking to her when she was unconscious after her surgery. So someone's a softie inside tho he goes around as a prickly guy, and he perhaps harbouring a one sided love towards his sunbae. Kkk. I want to see those scenes again. Monday feels a long way to go. Lmao

You are making me even more curious! would love to see the scene you described! We have seen so much scene of prickly Dong Joo and the only scene he goes mellow and I missed it TT. now I just have to tell myself Monday is just slightly more than a day away!

[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim"

There are fans of romancing in the non-romantic genres and then there are those who wish to see stories without OTPs, but good dramas can be found on both sides. "Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim" is still a mystery in terms of where it belongs as a genre, but perhaps it can find its own identity.

Premise

Two doctors who work for selfish reasons, one for rivalry and the other for recognition, meet an oddball mentor and through their experiences with him rediscover the humanity in medicine.

The Worrying

Mixed Messages

PD Yoo In-sik has stated that the "romantic" part of the title refers more to romanticism and a feeling, rather than romance. On the other hand, the promotional material makes sure to pair up the two young doctors. It is worrisome when a production's persons in charge cannot agree on a concept, but perhaps the drama will be consistent.

Clashing Fandoms

Given the popularity of "Oh Hae-Young Again", the fact that I still see people call Yoo Yeon-seok "Chilbong" and Han Seok-Kyu's own domestic and Hallyu fame, I am slightly worried over the potential clashing of interests in terms of the show's writing and ratings. I hope that regardless or domestic and abroad reactions, the creators will not be swayed by fanbases.

The Reassuring

Balanced Creator Duo

I have heard that writer Kang Eun-kyeong is very heavy on the "makjang", but her works are popular. PD Yoo In-sik is someone who manages to channel the best out of the writers he works with, so there is a balance here. My personal concern is quality over popularity, but two skilled creators have a good chance at both.

Promising Premise

The idea of seeing growth and maturity through the lives of people who need them is a promising concept. Medicine is not just about being a doctor, but about being a human who witnesses other humans at their worst and is the one to bring them hope. I sincerely hope this reality will be taken more seriously by Dramaland one day.

Final Thoughts

Be it with romance or without, in a big or small hospital, "Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim" has good potential to be a series focused on people rather than tropes. The promotional videos show mystery, medicine, romance and conflict. Hopefully these elements will be used well.

"Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim" begins its run on November 7th and will air every Monday and Tuesday at 22:00, on SBS. It is directed by Yoo In-sik, written by Kang Eun-kyeong and features Han Seok-Kyu, Yoo Yeon-seok, Seo Hyeon-jin and Kim Hong-pa.
