I just discovered that Netflix Canada has the film A Violent Prosecutor. I know SHS had only a minor role in it but I think I read that even with her small role she ended up stealing the show. Doesn't surprise me. Can anyone tell me approximately where in the movie she appears? So much to watch, so little time. I just want to see her.

First, thanks to everyone welcoming me to this forum. Here in the middle of Canada, I know of no one else who is into Kdramas let alone into Shin Hye Sun.

I'm not Korean, I only speak english, I'm male and I suspect I'm a lot older than most people here. I am definitely not the typical demographic for rom-coms. So it's impossible for me to chat with anyone I know about SHS as nobody around here, perhaps outside the small Korean community, has ever heard of her.

If it can help you to feel more comfortable, you're in the same situation that most of international korean drama fans: asian dramas are popular but not mainstream, so it's still rare to find people who enjoy them or are willing to talk about them near us.

And this problem is the same for all kind of fans, independently of their genre or age, that's why Soompi forum is still strong at a time where forums seem a thing of the past.

She's a indeed a very new actress: 5 years in the industry but only one here since her career started to take off. So outside Korea, nobody knows her.

From my first viewing SHL was already in my opinion, at the top of her game acting wise. I could sense immediately that career wise the sky is the limit for her if she so desires. So if she is now evolving into SHS  2.0, I just know there will be a SHS 3.0 and 4.0 in the future. She seems to like challenging herself and is now in the postion of being more selective in her roles. So depending on her personal goals and ambitions, her role choices and her directors, she will continue to evolve into an ever more nuanced actor who is beyond reproach in every role she takes on. It's in her blood.  She will dominate every second of screen time she has. This is my instinct.

It was my instinct too but i had to rethink my views on what's a brilliant career for her could be because the korean tv industry has a specific way to function, which is different from western countries and she's an atypical actress in this industry.

She won't get immediately meaty roles now even if she proved her acting skills because it takes a very long time for korean actors and actresses to get recognized as top value actors. It takes patience and endurance: few years of repeated high ratings to get more offers from more diverse sources.

Korean tv industry is a very small world: they all know each other and it's through their connections that actors and actresses make their career. That's where she atypical: she didn't have any and had to go through all the casting process in a fair way.

She wanted to rely on her talent and not her look: she had no surgery and though she is very pretty she wasn't putting herself on a show to get attention. So it slowed down her rise but it protected her too from the downfalls and sometimes dangerous threats that actresses who rely on sponsors can meet.

This system is closed off and very rigid. There's no other way to succeed in Korea than following the path expected by whose who have powers in the industry and the audience.

She indeed owns every screen second, that's why she looked so strong facing the cast of veterans of Secret Forest but the way she dominates screen becomes problematic now in the career: she's at her age in competition with girls who are "aging" idols and she's forced to take the roles that are offered to those less experienced actresses: mostly romantic roles.

In those productions she is casted with actors that are very popular but don't have the same acting range as her and the gap is obvious.

In the film industry,  It's also complicated because she doesn't seem to want to go for mature content. She said during MGL that she was happy doing a drama that her grandmother could enjoy, so mostly circling around the same kind of family safe productions for now, which are rarely big hits though they can get solid numbers.

So if she's without a doubt next Korea big hit, for now she needs to work hard and wait and hope lot.

The SHS 2.0 is essentially a new level in her career where she becomes sexier to fit more the characters that she's playing in romantic drama and to suit better the image of her co-stars.

Korean viewers are obsessed with looks: it's not enough to be talented, actors and actresses must also  have the right appereances and match each other, must display the right energy and good chemistry.

From a North American point of view, I'm certain that if SHS was fluent in English and her shows were more anglasized and  Hollywood oriented she would be a global mega star and would consistently win best actress awards. Of course I would never want SHS to become Hoolywoodized - that would not only be degrading but I see a big part of her charm is in her Korean-ness. I think she is the quintessential Korean female and that is something to celebrate and cherish. Korean history and culture is rich and to wander away from it to appeal to an american audience would be very unfortunate. That's not to say that the right blended vehicle for a break through to non Asian audiences doesn't exist. It's just another possible evolutionary step for SHS but It's probably not something she cares too much about anyway.

The version of Hoolywoodized in korean industry is to become an hallyu star, which means to have a massive fanbase in China and Japan or others rich asian countries.

Those foreigners fans becomes a sort of a private community with a priviledgied access to the star, which  cost a lot of money.

It has nothing to do with acting, it's only business.

No country in East Asia plays the same role as Hollywood does for european countries and even the rest of the world. South Korea is the country that exports the most  its productions, but it's not cultural domination rather a soft power.

Going global thus interest them but it won't be the same way that Hollywood that create mega stars.

She's taking things step by step and her ambition is South Korea only, there's no value for her to have more international fans though she appreciates a lot their support.

After returning from my secret forest after 6 days, my first priority was to watch the ALM:L episodes I missed. Wow. What a magnificent and beautiful actress Shin Hye Sun is. I really love her eyes. She almost doesn't need dialogue - you can tell what's  going on inside her character just by looking into her eyes. That her eyes we're pierced by glass shards in the first episode just about killed me, but even blinded her eyes conveyed deep emotion. She also has just about the best crying eyes I've ever seen - but always makes me sad to see. I prefer her happy eyes. I could stare into them forever.

You mean this ^_^

Being male, I'm  much more partial to female actors, especially ones I consider beautiful like SHS, so I don't analyse male roles nearly as much. I have no doubt that some of the male characters in SHS shows have huge drawing power with audiences, especially females. Kim Myung Soo is a case in point.

The male characters on ALML have their own appeal, independently of the look of the actors. ^_^

Their storyline especially Kang Woo's storyline is unusual for a second lead and really worth to watch to see how far the writer will dare to go with him to get him out the codified rules of those romantic stories.

However, call me biased, but it seems to me that SHS is the big draw that makes these shows the big hits that they are. If I'm not mistaken, the series that feature SHS in key roles of late also top the ratings charts. Coincidence? I don't think so. I believe I read somewhere that a recent episode of ALML broke a ratings record. With SHS at the top of her game it doesn't surprise me.More record breaking episodes to come no doubt.

It's not only her: it's a collaborative work.

KMS has a massive fanbase and LDG is an experimented actor.

The director is very competent..

And KBS promotion was on another scale: the giant posters could be seen everywhere in Seoul, and internet has been flooded with pics and vids and contests.

I haven't had to curse at all so far becoz of the pure eye candies and becoz well if they had 16 hours of disjointed vignettes with SHS doing every scene, I would pay good money just to watch that, too. Who needs well constructed story lines and well developed characters when it's SHS, right? ;);) That's a wink, wink, ok @titania1000 ok, so don't respond to that. :P

I know that i'm not a hard fan enough! :bawling:

I need badly to improve: I should bow more to the queen  and learn how lucky i am to just have  the priviledge to enjoy her work:love:

Her best kiss scenes hands down and boy was KDW hot in it!

The fact that he never does kisses scenes and she was his  first kiss on screen  and made everyone jealous is the cherry on the top.

He mentioned her in a interview when she was doing MGL. Maybe they'll play together again?

I've always found everything I've read about SHS' role in "The Violent Prosecutor" vaguely unsettling.

But it appears that I am probably alone in that assessment.

@titania1000 Did KDW really mention her in an interview? If you don't mind, what did he say about her and I would honestly die of happiness if they act again?

I need to find again the interview in the thread: i'm certain that @meechuttso translated the excerpt.

He said that he was watching  MGL with his agent/manager and that he was impressed by her acting. His agent teased him that he knew her: that she was the girl that he kissed back then in Violent Prosecutor.

He was embarrassed because he didn't recognize her (probably because she changed so much)!

The interview  became a topic on insta at the time and the kiss scenes were reuploaded in her tag few times and largely liked!:w00t:

I've been waiting for them to act again together since then but no news on this front yet :(

I won't give up, they need and can reunite in a more interesting collaboration for her: she can be a female lead on his films now!

The filming of the scene was a mess indeed and it made her uncomfortable that it was a last minute decision (to add more scenes)  and that she didn't sign for it ! Nothing scary but not the best way to be treated.

it seems that KDW himself had few complaints too about the filming conditions.:o

Yes i remembered seeing the translation. I think it was something like he was reminded that they worked together before. He forgot her or didn't recognise her. But seems weird to not recognise a costar though lol :sweatingbullets: Agree it was like a mess too. Probably she was too small a role then.

Now we can anticipate their next proper collaboration as leads now that she's leading lady status. :D

Wow titania1000! Thank you so much for your thorough commentary on some of my posts. I have been fascinated with South Korea for a few years now but there is a lot I don't know about the culture.  So your words are very informative, interesting and helpful to me. It's sad that the entertainment industry has to play games with actors like they do but its refreshing to me that SHS found a way to avoid most of that.  I respect her even more now.

South Korea is already a global giant with brands like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Kia and many others.  The entertainment industry is on the same trajectory.  The band BTS is being called the new Beatles.  Considering Beatlemania swept the entire world off their feet, that's a great compliment.  I read that the movie Parasite will likely be a top contender for the Academy Award for Best International Film. I think that would be a first for Korea but hopefully not the last.  My wish is that Shin Hye Sun will someday play the lead role in a film that wins Best International Film.  I hope that someday this forum will be filled with pictures of her on the red carpet wearing a stunning Korean designer dress beaming her infectious smile for the entire world to see. :D

Thanks again titania1000 for all the info.

By the way @titania1000 I hope that you are not angry with me in any way in ALML thread If anything I said made you misunderstood my intentions of my views over the drama, I apologise because it's only meant to be for the drama and absolutely nothing personal. :)

‘단사랑’ 신혜선X김명수 “호흡 잘 맞아…현장 분위기 좋다”

'Angel's Last Mission: Love'  Shin Hye Sun x Kim Myung Soo.

Acting well together, good atmosphere on the scene

On the afternoon of the 12th, KBS Nuri Dong cooking studio (https://kbscookingstudio.modoo.at/)  in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, held a press conference on the KBS drama 'Dan, one love'. The main actors Shin Hye Sun and Kim Myoung (El) attended the meeting.

On this day, Kim Myung-soo said, "My previous work I played in courtroom and period drama. So this time, the angel character is very unfamiliar because I've never played this appearance. I was so worried but it was fun at the same time. Lot of worries about how to express it well. I wondered if it's not in this work when I can (have chance) to do this bright character. I also thought that it would be good to do it with Shin Hye Sun. Our chemistry on the scene was comfortable since the first time we met. She is the person with driving force to lead the atmosphere brightly even if it is difficult."  he talked about chemistry and impressions working with Shin Hye Sun on this character.

Shin Hye Sun said "I played a bright innocent person in the previous work. This Yeon-Seo character attracted me that I could show a bit more different appearance.  There was quite similar when it came to (shooting) scenario. Having fun shooting and the atmosphere was so good. I thought the acting was well-matched from the beginning.  As time went on, we became more and more familiar/knowing with each other, so we could act well togther."  She explained acting with Kim Myung Soo.
