DESCRIPTION

What is the most exciting — and most terrifying — thing that can happen to a K-drama fanatic? Claire Duncan is a 20-year-old college student who finds her real life boring. Maybe that’s because she’s never looking up, instead having her nose buried in her smartphone and watching her favorite Korean drama, “Taste of Love”, starring her favorite actor Joon Park (Sean Dulake). Joon Park plays the hot chef and protagonists in “Taste of Love” who is still waiting for his one true love to come into his life. Through a touch of the supernatural and a sprinkle of magic, Claire’s desire to shed her own boring life and live in the world of “Taste of Love” comes true when she is transported into her favorite drama and comes face-to-face with Joon Park! There, Claire also meets the mysterious waiter Seth Ko, who made his own journey into the drama years ago from the real world and mentors Claire on how to navigate the dramaworld. When the appearance of Claire throws “Taste of Love” off-balance, causing other dramas to splice into the series, what kind of crazy adventure will Claire experience?

Dramaworld is a 2016 Viki original series. Set in Los Angeles and Seoul, the first-ever American-Korean mashup series is written by Josh Billig and Chris Martin and directed by Chris Martin.

It is co-produced by China’s Jetavana Entertainment, South Korea's EnterMedia Contents and US Third Culture Content. The first season will premiere at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on April 16 2016, followed by the worldwide exclusive release on Viki.^[3]

Nearly every episode includes cameos from well-known K-pop and K-drama stars, including Super Junior's Choi Siwon, who also stars in The King of Dramas, and She Was Pretty and Han Ji-min, lead actress of Padam Padam, and romantic comedy Rooftop Prince.^[4]

 

PLOT

Claire Duncan (Liv Hewson), a cute if slightly nerdy 20-year old college student, is obsessed with Korean drama. While most co-eds are out partying, she's glued to the screen watching her favorite k-drama actor, Joon Park (Sean Dulake), in Taste of Love. Dreamy, charming, and downright adorable, Joon Park is more than Claire's fantasy. He's her knight in shining armor, the man of her dreams. Claire's waking days, sadly, are not nearly as thrilling as the ones depicted in the k-drama world. Between work and school, her only escape is the glamour and excitement of Taste of Love and Joon Park's intoxicating charm and good looks. Like a girl lost in love, Claire spends almost every second wishing he would walk through the doors and sweep her off her feet. Her world, however, is turned upside down when, through a twist of fate and a touch of magic, she finds herself sucked into her smartphone and transported inside the world of her favorite k-drama. Stuck inside Dramaworld, Claire finally gets to meet Joon Park in the flesh. But now that she's a leading lady, she can't just watch the drama unfold. She's got to be part of it.

Josh Billig and Chris Martin co-write the series, with Martin directing the series’ first season.^[7] Dramaworld is co-produced by China's Jetavana Entertainment, EnterMedia Contents, and Third Culture Content.^[8][9] The project is spearheaded and financed by an online video streaming site, Viki.^[10][11]

“Dramaworld” Is Every K-Drama Fan's Dream Come True

Oh, to jump into a K-drama and prevent things from going the wrong way. Like you might jump into a horror film — or not — to tell a soon-to-die character, “No, let’s NOT explore the dark, cobwebby basement to find out what that creepy sound was.” How many times have you wanted to do that?

To jump right into the action:

Global video streaming platform Viki just launched the first two episodes of “Dramaworld,” which will air two episodes every Sunday for five weeks, for a total of 10 episodes.

The drama features the story of Claire Duncan (Liv Hewson), a 20-year-old college student who escapes her own boring life by watching K-dramas, where, she says, “life is exciting,” when she finds herself actually being sucked into Dramaworld, where the lives of her favorite characters are very much real and Dramaworld is very much a real place. And the fate of it all is in her hands.

The drama stars Sean Dulake (“Athena: Goddess of War”), Justin Chon (“Twilight”), and Bae Noo Ri (“The Moon Embracing the Sun,” “Inspiring Generation”), including various cameos from Han Ji Min, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, Kim Byung Chul (“Descendants of the Sun”), and more.

Made specifically for the international audience, the bilingual drama seamlessly integrates English and Korean, and takes the K-drama fan’s life to the forefront, from spectator to main character (in more ways than one, possibly):

Watch: “Dramaworld” Draws You into Their World in First Teaser

With the premiere just a month away, the first teaser for Viki’s first original series “Dramaworld” has been revealed.

“Dramaworld” follows Claire Duncan (played by Australian newcomer Liv Hewson), a 20-year-old college student who’s obsessed with Korean dramas, following her favorite leading man, Joon Park (played by Sean Richard Dulake of Korean dramas “Feast of the Gods” and “Athena: Goddess of War”).

Through a twist of fate and a touch of magic, Claire’s world is turned upside down as she finds herself sucked into her favorite show through her smartphone, transporting her into Dramaworld. Claire will soon find out, with a little help from her new friend Seth Ko (played by Justin Chon of “The Twilight Saga” and “21 & Over”), that even she has a role to play in this world.

Fans of K-drama will also be delighted by some high-profile cameos in the series, including: Choi Siwon (who previously teased his deadly appearance) and Han Ji Min.

The series will begin airing on April 17 on Viki and will have 10 episodes.

“Dramaworld,” a 10 episode comedy-drama set in Los Angeles and Korea, will pay homage to millions of international K-Drama fans with a plotline that reflects their daily lives. The show is being co-produced by Viki, China’s Jetavana Entertainment, Korea’s EnterMedia Contents and Third Culture Content.

The story follows 20-year-old college student and K-Drama fangirl Claire Duncan (Liv Hewson) whom, with a touch of magic, gets transported into her favorite show with her bias, Joon Park (Sean Richard). Featuring a plethora of cameos and appearances by “Twilight’s” Justin Chon, Super Junior’s Choi Siwon, and “Hyde, Jekyll, Me’s” Han Ji Min, “Dramaworld” will debut worldwide exclusively on Viki.com in early 2016.

“‘Dramaworld’ is our love letter to drama fans everywhere,” said Viki CEO Tammy H. Recap: Attending The Premiere Of Dramaworld With The Stars

This past weekend marked a big event for drama fans! It’s really rare to have a drama hold a premiere event in the U.S. and with the world premiere of Viki’s first original series “Dramaworld,” it was the perfect opportunity to hold an event for fans around it.

In case you haven’t heard yet, “Dramaworld” is the story of a K-drama superfan who gets sucked into her phone to fix the story of her latest drama obsession, “Taste of Love.” Is this the dream of all K-drama fans? Would you complain terribly if you were suddenly in “Descendants of the Sun”? Exactly.

With the drama being all about the dreams of K-drama fans, it made sense to create a premiere event for fans as well. Often, watching dramas can be a solitary thing – sitting in bed at 2AM with your phone on the Viki app and deliriously deciding it’s the perfect time for “just one more episode.” So, what was it like to watch the first three episodes sitting next to real, live fans? Amazing.

The evening kicked off at the Theater at the Ace Hotel in LA with a red carpet to celebrate the cast, crew, and producers who brought this international drama from dream to reality.

With cameras flashing and interviews happening left and right, it was fun for fans (and passersby) alike to take a gander at the stars they’d soon be seeing on the big screen.

Once we were in the theater, we all watched the first 3 episodes together (you can watch two of them on Viki now!) and then the cast took the stage for a Q&A hosted by Phil Wang of Wong Fu Productions.

The cast was really excited to be able to talk about the filming and about the fun they had behind the scenes – perhaps the best part is how they were able to communicate across cultural and linguistic borders in order to become quick friends.

Director Chris Martin on ‘Dramaworld’ for Viki and Memorable Moments from Filming

Have you ever wished you could enter your favorite TV show and interact with the characters? Well, in Viki’s new international series Dramaworld, they’re aiming to sell you that kind of wish fulfillment. In the 10-episode American-Korean mashup series, written by Josh Billig and Chris Martin and directed by Martin, young college student Claire Duncan (Liv Hewson) is a rabid fan of Korean dramas, and soon finds herself in the middle of one after she’s magically transported into the world of the show she loves. Set in Los Angeles and Seoul and in both English and Korean through the use of well positioned subtitles (it’s a plot point), the show is a love letter to fans of Asian dramas which are incredibly popular around the world. Dramaworld also stars Sean Dulake (Athena: Goddess of War) as the leading man of her favorite drama “Taste of Love”, Justin Chon (The Twilight Saga) as Claire’s newfound friend who helps guide her, and Kim Sa Hee, Bae Noo Ri, and Jimmy Shubert.

Last year when the show was filming in Seoul I got to visit the set and talk to some of the cast and Chris Martin. While some of you might be wondering why we’d cover a web series, I jumped at the chance to do this because while a lot of you might not watch K dramas, they’re hugely popular around the world and I wanted to see how they were made up close.

During my interview with Martin he discussed how he ended up in Korea, the popularity of K dramas, how the series came together, what it’s about, memorable moments from filming, the way they can work in organic cameos, and a lot more.
