Okay, I'm embarrassed to call myself a fan because I can't even tell which one is real and which one's wax. Less than two weeks after his measurements were taken, Yang Yang (Martial Universe) is back in Madam Tussauds to attend the unveiling of his personal wax figure and it cannot be any more realistic. It apparently took a good forty-five minutes just to determine which eye color to use so imagine how long it took for the rest of him to be completed. Okay, I'm embarrassed to call myself a fan because I can't even tell which one is real and which one's wax. It was less than two weeks ago when news of Yang Yang's measurements being taken was trending and he is back in Madam Tussauds once again this time to attend the unveiling of his personal wax figure. And the verdict is that it cannot be any more realistic. It apparently took a good forty-five minutes just to determine which eye color to use so imagine how long it took for the rest of him to be completed. 
 
Yang Yang posted on weibo, "Hugging my older brother @ShanghaiMadamTussauds." I have been to a couple Madam Tussauds in the past and maybe technology has progressed at lightning speed because they sure seem to have outdone themselves this time. Fans of Yang Yang can visit his 'identical older brother' in Shanghai.

Early lifeEdit

In childhood, Yang Yang was engaged in learning violin, practising swimming and baseball afterschool. A dance teacher found him with a gift for dancing by chance and asked him to practice dancing at the weekends. At the age of 11, he got admitted to the most famous Department of Dance inPeople's Liberation Army Arts College inChina. He ranked the first place in every exam since the second year and was described as the most talented dancer in fifty years by his teacher. His good-looking was also well known that girls from other Beijing arts colleges went to watch him which gave birth to a term called “Take a daycation in PLAAC (to watch Yang Yang)”.[1]

2007–2014: Beginning and Moderate fameEdit

In December 2007, he was personally handpicked to play the lead role Jia Baoyu by the director Li Shaohong in The Dream of Red Mansions. One of the most expensive Chinese TV series ever produced at RMB118 million (US$17.55 million), the 50 episode drama made its debut on July 6, 2010 on 9 terrestrial networks across China.[2] Yang won Best New Actor at the BQ Celebrity Score Awards for his performance in the drama.[3][4][5]

In February 2011, he starred in the youth inspirational idol drama Melody of Youth and participated in its soundtrack.[6] In June, together with other prominent actors in China, Yang participated in the film The Founding of a Party, a patriotic tribute detailing the process of establishing the Communist Party of China.[7] This also marks his big screen debut. In August 2011, he participated in another youth drama My Adorable Husband.[8]

In March 2012, Yang starred in the romance film Joyful Reunion. He then participated in the "water cube" version of The Dream of Red Mansions, performed at the Beijing National Aquatics Center. After a lapse of three years, he once again portrayed Jia Baoyu in the form of a dance interpretation.[9][10] In September of the same year, he starred in the war dramaThe War Doesn't Believe in Tears, which was well received by the audience.[11][12] In October, he starred in the nano-movie Refresh 3+7.[13]

In July 2013, he starred in war melodramaUltimate Conquest, in which he performed action scenes and difficult stunts without a double.[14][15] The drama series was especially popular with the younger audiences due to its cast of popular idols, and thus was launched as a "youth war" title by the audience.[16] The same month, Legend of Goddess Luo starring Yang premiered on Jiangsu Television, and gained high viewership ratings. It was also re-telecasted on other television stations in mainland China and other countries.

In November 2013, he portrayed a genius pianist in the youth romance drama Flowers of Pinellia Ternata, based on Jiu Yehui's novel of the same name.[17] The same month, he participated in China's first large scale military affairs reality show Star Soldier. In December 2013, he was cast in The Chronicles of Town Called Jian, a drama based on the "Tarot Goddess Sleuths" series, alongside Victoria Song. It is his third collaboration with directorLi Shaohong after The Dream of Red Mansionsand Flowers of Pinellia Ternata.[18][19]

On March 23, 2014, Yang played a radical patriotic in the film noir The Unbearable Lightness of Inspector Fan which released on January 16, 2015 and received acclaim for his performance as an antagonist.[20]

On April 29, 2014, Yang ended his contract of 7 years with his company.[21][22] In July, he starred in the drama adaption of the hugely successful film series Tiny Times. He plays Neil, the younger cousin of Gu Li.[23][24] He then starred in the republic-era dramaLanterns, based on the novel Wives and Concubines, which has also been adapted intoRaise the Red Lantern by acclaimed film director Zhang Yimou.[25]

2015–present: Mainstream PopularityEdit

In 2015, Yang starred in a series of successful dramas and movies, launching him into one of the most popular young actors in mainland China.

First, he starred in wuxia detective series The Four, based on the novel Si Da Ming Pu byWoon Swee Oan, portraying the character "Wu Qing (Emotionless)".[26][27] The drama series was especially popular with the younger audiences due to its main cast of flower boys.[28]

He started to gain more recognition after the premiere of The Left Ear. In the film, Yang plays the school's "campus prince", who harbors dual personalities.[29] The coming-of-age film was a huge commercial success, grossing US$78 million from its initial budget of U$10 million.

He then starred in action-adventure web-drama The Lost Tomb as the one of the two main leads Zhang Qiling, based on the novel of the same name.[30] The series became an internet sensation upon its premiere on iQiyi, attaining 100 million views within 22 hours. Throughout its run, the internet drama drew huge traffic and triggered much discussions online and offline, attaining a cult following. Due to his popularity, Yang become the iQiyiVIP Spokesman and was invited to the ROIFestival 2015.[31]

Following The Lost Tomb, Yang then played the male lead Ruo Bai in the youth sports drama The Whirlwind Girl.[32] His character became popular with the audience, who affectionately called him "Ruo Bai Ba Ba (father)". The drama captured first-place spot among TV show ratings, and quickly gained one of the highest viewership ratings of the year. It also won Outstanding Television Series at the 28th Golden Eagle Awards.

Yang also became a cast member in travel reality show Divas Hit the Road (II). The show, which features popular actors Jing Boran andZheng Shuang, was extremely well received by the audience and gained him more fans. Along with his outstanding performance, he topped the "2015 Chinese Reality Show Star Ranking".[33][34]

At the end of the year, Yang won several major awards, testifying to his popularity and establishing his status as one of the most popular and sought-after young actors (also known as "Little Fresh Meat"). He was awarded the Most Influential TV Actor together with actor Deng Chao at the BAZAAR Men's Style Awards Night,[35] and Favourite TV Actor of the Year at iQiyi All-Star Carnival Night 2016.[36] Yang was recognized as actor that Generated the most Concern/Interest and the Most Media Influence at the Anhui TV Drama Awards.[37]

On March 18, Yang Yang was announced byPowerstar to be the Most Popular Actor in themainland region.

In May 2016, Yang Yang was cast in the romance film I Belonged to You.[38] The film was released on September 29, 2016 which topped box office charts and broke box office sales record for mainland-produced romance films. It eventually grossed over US$100 million to become one of the highest-grossing films in China.[39]

In August 2016, the romance drama Just One Smile Is Very Alluring in which Yang Yang played the leading role as Xiao Nai, a computer Genius, was released. Upon release, it became a hot-issued topic, gaining a large number of views in a short time and attention from media outlets. Yang experienced a surge in popularity, allowing him to top the Vlinkage Celebrity List for 13 times in 6 months.[40][41]

Yang Yang was casted in Once Upon a Time, the movie adaption of popular fantasy period romance novel Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles Peach Blossoms, alongside Liu Yifei. The movie was directed by famous cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding andAcademy Awards winner Anthony LaMolinara. The film shooting had finished on March 21 and will be released in summer 2017.[42][43] On September 10, Liu made a surprise appearance at Yang's birthday party.[44]

In November 2016, Yang Yang starred in the drama adaption of popular xianxia (fantasy) novel Wu Dong Qian Kun, titled Martial Universe, which was directed by Zhang Li, the most famous historical drama director whose works represents the highest level of Chinese historical dramas. Yang plays Lin Dong, a young boy who later transforms into a revered hero.[45][46] Yang confirmed he has done all stunts by himself at the Esquire award ceremony.

With Yang Yang's successful projects this year, he was then awarded Most Popular Actor at L'Officiel Fashion Night and SohuFashion Awards.[47] Yang was honored byBaidu and Esquire to be the Most Commercially Valuable Actor. He was also awarded Artist of the Year and UC Headlines Figure at Youku Young Choice Awards.[48][49]

 

 
Other activitiesEdit

In 2015, Milan Men's Fashion Week invited Yang to participate in international Men's Fashion Week. His participation attracted much media attention. Yang attended four big shows including Hogan, Moncler, Gucci, andFendi.[50][51]

In January 2016, Yang became the first artist to be featured on the China Post postage stamp. Fans applauded the stamps as a new year's gift from the China Post, and the initial release was sold out on the first day.[52][53] He was then invited by Dior to attend the Dior Homme Winter 2016/2017 show, becoming the only Chinese actor to be officially invited.

On February 7, Yang performed “Father and Son” (父子) with Tong Tiexin in popular showCCTV New Year's Gala. His performance garnered praise by audience and honored as Most Favorite Performance with 32,65% vote, and was made into a music video by CCTVand film director Zhang Yibai.[54][55][56]

In March 2016, Yang was invited to shoot "Healing" micro film for new creative campaign entitled “My Mr. Honey” to promote French brand Guerlain.[57][58]

In April 2016, Yang was invited as a celeb torch-bearer in Athens to start the Olympic flame’s journey around the world.[59]

In May 2016, Yang released a single "Summer's Smooth Hair Dance (夏日顺发舞)" in collaboration with Rejoice Shampoo. Yang went to South Korea to shoot the MV, which was directed by Cho Soo-hyun, who also directed Psy's "Gangnam Style". The single topped the V Charts upon release and broke records to become the fastest single to achieve ten million plays in a week.[60]

In June 2016, Yang was invited to attend the 2017 S/S Valentino Paris Fashion Week, becoming the only Chinese actor to be officially invited.[61] Prior to the show, Yang was one of the many celebrity guests to attend the grand opening of the Valentinoboutique in Shanghai.[62] In July, Yang joined the cocktail party celebrating the launch of the exclusive Valentino Tie&Dye pop upinstallation in Beijing.[63] Afterward, Yang participated in a series of interviews as well as photoshoot with GQ China wearingValentino 2016 F/W men's series for magazine cover in September.[64][65]

For 2016, Yang covered a total of 25 magazines including Femina, Harper's Bazaar,OK!, Grazia, L'officiel Hommes, Elle, GQ,Esquire, L'Officiel, and Cosmopolitan.

On January 2, 2017, Yang officially becomePUMA's Asian brand ambassador.[66] On January 10, Yang's OPPO blockbuster TVC "The Magic Journey of Liliput" became a hot-issued topic, and was forwarded over 10000 times after one hour was released onweibo.[67][68]

Charity worksEdit

In addition to the listed above, Yang is actively engaged in other charity works activities. On September 23, Yang did charity auction inHarper's Bazaar Star Charity Night 2015.Harper's Bazaar Stars’ Charity Gala is an annual fundraising gala for Chinese celebrities who support charities. It collects money through an auction and the funding is used for charities that support causes for impoverished children, medical aids, disaster recovery and many others.[108] On September 30, Yang was awarded the charity donation certificate at Baidu Fan Festival, in order to thank Yang and his fans for doing charity work named "Yang Yang Hope Primary School".[109] It is a collaboration project between Baidu, Project Hope, and China Youth Development Foundation. The goal is to give support for "5 Yuan New School" (5元新校舍) in Guangxi.

On October 16, Yang participated in theBAZAAR auction. This auction was held for 12 hours, with 24 million people onlookers, 1338 bids and 92 auction items were sold, totaling RMB 1 million, among which is a Rockioo Watch signed by Yang which sold for RMB 86897.

On February 1, 2016, Yang joined the "9 + 1" fundraiser through weibo; the event was created by China Internet Development Foundation that launched a call for each person to donate ¥ 100, to benefit 9 people from a poor family.

At Just One Smile Is Very Alluring press conference, Yang along with other cast members were auctioning some objects and equipment used on set to donate.[110] On September 10, Yang had a fan meeting on his 25th birthday and the profit from the event was donated to Harper's Bazaar charity.[111]On December 12, Yang participated inHarper's Bazaar Charity Stars event, helping to design of the "love" theme jewelry sale.[112]

On December 30, Yang had public welfare “A Smile to Construct the Future (微笑再造未来)” environmental conference, in order to promote environmental protection. This conference strongly urged consumers to waste recycling of oral products, processing, recycling, conversion for the value of daily necessities and materials. In addition, Colgatealso joined to part of the activities of the supply oral care products, provided to "Yang Yang Hope Primary School" students.[113]

[Drama News] Yang Yang Looking Handsome on the Set of Martial Universe 武动乾坤

Martial Universe (武动乾坤) stars Yang Yang, Wang Likun, Crystal Zhang Tian Ai, and Wu Chun continues to film for the xianxia drama and had a media event yesterday where they accepted press interviews. Yang Yang talked about how he continues to learn through the process of acting and he believes his character this time will be refreshing to the audience as it’s different from the cold and aloof roles he’s had in the past. As for Crystal, she said her character yells a lot, so her throat has been hurting. And another interesting tidbit is that Wu Chun has been nicknamed 厨神 “master chef” by Yang Yang because whenever Wu Chun is on the set, they always have good food to eat (lol). It sounds like the cast is getting along well!
