Hmm. I don't think I've posted in this thread before so sorry that I'm here to make such a shallow observation. But, I seriously I don't get why people use such negative terms with regard to his looks. When I tell people I like the male lead in VM, they will have that questioning look (well, I couldn't exactly see them cos I was talking to them via MSN but I get the tone lah) on their face as if he was some hideous creature or something. He's not the most drop-dead gorgeous guy in the world (but then, who can claim to be that?) but if I were to snag someone like him in the future? Lucky I would be. Heh.

Oh Man Seok Divorces, Ending 6 Years of Marriage

Recently, actor Oh Man Seok's divorce with his wife Jo Sang Kyung in May was publicly disclosed.

In a report in an August issue of a women's magazine, Oh Man Seok and his costume designer wife, who is 3 years older than him, had mutually agreed to end their 6 years of marriage. However, the reason for the divorce has not been disclosed.

Both have a 6 year old daughter, whom Oh Man Seok will have the custodial rights to after the divorce. Oh Man Seok and Jo Sang Kyung attended the same university, one studying theatrical acting and the other studying theatrical costume designing. They got married in 2001. Not only having major achievements in musicals, but also in films and TV dramas, popular star Oh Man Seok is currrently filming a criminal thriller movie "Our Neighborhood" and will lead in next month's planned broadcast of SBS large-scaled historical drama, "The King and I".

Sony nabs format for 'Hyena'

Studio picks up rights from CJ Media

SEOUL -- Sony Pictures Television Intl. has picked up European format rights for South Korean TV drama "Hyena" from CJ Media.

The 16-part series is the first of CJ Media's expanding slate of dramas to be sold as a scripted format outside of South Korea.

Last November, the two companies signed a deal that gave SPTI first look at rights in Asia, excluding Japan and China, to "Hyena" and other upcoming drama series.

In a previous deal, SPTI picked up rights to features "How to Keep My Love" and "The Greatest Expectation."

"Hyena" stars singer-actor Kim Min-jong, Yoon Da-hoon and actress So Yi-hyun in a story about four men who look for casual relationships but stumble across something more serious.

Produced by shingle A Story, show was broadcast in South Korea from October to November last year.

"The quality of these scripts is rare and on par with some of our most successful scripted format productions worldwide," said Rob Feldman, VP of international production at SPTI.

Supervising the writing on "Hyena" was Wan-Kyu Choi, the scripter behind "Prince of the Legend," the top Korean drama in 2006.

"Hyena" is one of a new wave of TV dramas commissioned by cablers such as CJ Media and On Media, threatening the hegemony of pubcasters KBS, MBC and SBS.

Scripted U.S. formats that have been successfully adapted by SPTI globally include "The Nanny," "Bewitched," "Who's the Boss," "Married ... With Children" and "Mad About You."

SEOUL -- Sony Pictures Television International has acquired the European format rights to Korean TV series "Hyena" from CJ Media, SPTI said Thursday.

"Hyena" follows the lives of four single men, drawing comparisons to HBO's series "Sex and the City." It was one of the first original series broadcast on Channel CGV, Korea's leading cable broadcaster, which is owned by CJ Media.

SPTI called the deal the first time it has acquired format rights for any Asian scripted program and a sign of its strengthening relationship with CJ Media, the television production arm of the CJ Group, one of Korea's biggest cable broadcasters.

" 'Hyena' has proven to be a groundbreaking series in Korea, incorporating the dramatic elements and fine writing of Korean drama with a Western episodic structure," said Mary Chan, SPTI's executive director of Asia production. "But more importantly, it is simply a great story filled with rowdy humor. We look forward to bringing this great story to audiences beyond Asia by formatting it in Europe."

SPTI said that, though no European broadcaster has yet signed up to remake the series, talks are under way with several potential partners.

"We are excited to be working with SPTI on the distribution and format licensing of 'Hyena' outside of Korea," executive producer Ahn Sang Hw said. "It is a great opportunity for CJ Media to grow into a global entertainment company with outstanding cultural content."

a while back yes.. even around 15 years ago men always got the children.. and the children were almost always subjected to a lot of abuse and neglect from their step mothers and fathers. It's statistically shown that children significantly grow up better with the mother or with the mother's side of the family. The father, for some reason usually neglects the children or they are subjected to a lot of various types of abuse by the stepmother.

But nowadays, after intense research and backing by children social workers, child psychologists, law makers, citizens etc., Korean laws are different- usually mothers get the children (that is if she has an income of some sort). however, i think fathers should be subjected to child support even if they are not raising the child.. but Korean laws are not that fair yet.

Traditionally, Koreans believe to cut off all ties with the other spouse and spouse's family after a divorce to not "confuse" the child. It's usually the ex-husband's parents and family that are the most meddlesome. But a growing number of young Korean divorcees are becoming more westernized and defy their parent's (child's grandparents) meddling and stay amicable for the child's sake. Both young parents stay involved in their children's lives even after divorce. Of course this is highly criticized by older Koreans who have sons.

I think Oh Man Seok is a rather unusual type of Korean male in which he probably looks after the daughter more than the wife. I wouldn't be surprised.. she seems like a very career orientated woman. (Seen her interviews in the past- she's pretty famous herself). I don't think she's an uncaring or bad person.. just not really the traditional korean mother/wife type at all. Highly unusual for Korean females.. usually even Korean career women are very home-y and motherly inside their home and with their family. But I guess with the constant increase of Korean economy, you are now getting a more diverse spectrum of lifestyles with young couples.

i think man seok is sexy, and what makes him sexy is the fact he can ACT!!! i mean he is one BAD ACTOR! most times you are watching dramas because the cast looks good, but you want him because he can pull off so many roles, you appreciate him. his acting gives him this glow and it shows everytime he smiles or cries...its pure beautiful. he has a manly look to him, its just unique in quality because we are so use to the baby face, oh he can pass for a cute girl or he so hot with a nice bod, that you are blinded by makeup and man seok has a natural gentleness and handsome look, its not cute its handsome! give the man his props and shutup with the negativity or the uh, he all right! OH MAN SEOK, FIGHTING!!!!!!!!!!

I'm surprised at this, since I saw his wedding ring around his neck in Vineyard Man and at signings... I thought this was sweet for him to do. Because even while he was filming the drama he was being loyal. He doesn't strike me as the type.

This is Western bull. It makes no difference. And I say this as an adoptee. Western Culture likes to make the theory before the science, and then use the science to justify it later. I took a class on language acquisition and we covered socialization in the class--what you just said doesn't prove true culture to culture. If there were inherent to the male that made them defective parents, I don't think the human male would hang around the human female for the period that they do. There is an evolutionary advantage to the child to have equally effective parents.

Besides which if you really want to argue this, there are species of other animals where the male takes care of the young and there is also equal parenting. As I said, this is a scientific justification for what is actually cultural relativism. (And I can go over why the human female takes care of the children in Western culture and is called more effective too.) And I say this as a female...

Conversely, I've heard of cases where a woman decided after her divorce to give custody of her children to the father in the West and was called a horrid mother, a male, etc. Isn't that as ridiculous?

I doubt Oh Man Suk would be a bad father anyhow....

wow..didn't know that Oh Man Seok already divorced his wife! well no matter what, I hope he is happy. Whether he gets custody of his daughter or not, I'm sure he'd still fulfill his responsibilities as a father since he seems like he loves his daughter a lot and is a loving, caring father. I'm sure he wouldn't do anything to jeopardize his relationship with his daughter.

yeah, new drama!! can't wait to see it. is he the main character? i sure hope so since he did such an awesome job with Vineyard Man. and on YSMM! can't wait to watch this either...hopefully there are subs!..haha..

Yes I do agree it is best for the child to have BOTH parents around... but that isn't always the case, unfortunately. I was not talking about Western culture.. but Korean culture (which is significantly different). It is of course a case by case scenerio.. and we can only generalize on such topics.. But yes, in the PAST, Korean fathers and the father's side of the family used to be the usual party that neglected or abused the child during a divorce or separation of spouse - that is, within the cases where there was neglect or abuse. Records have shown that and people who have been working in this field all say the same thing. But the young Korean fathers of today are very different for the most part.

My previous post was just talking about the past in Korea.. Today, Korean fathers have changed due to pressures from many areas to change old cultural ways of thinking.. Now there are many very good fathers who are very involved in the upbringing of their children. But laws are only starting to reflect change based on old information.. I guess this is an example of how slow the judicial system works (in any country).

But I agree men ARE very capable of being good parents.. if not better.. but culturally and socially they may be taught NOT to be, or have different ideas in what makes up the criteria of a father... Korea's criteria in the past would be considered the norm then.. but terrible now.

But we're not talking about Oh Man Suk who strikes me as a very capable, loving father.. (according to his interviews and information here and there that i've read about him). I'm glad that he's had a lot of success in his career, he definitely deserves it. He's really multifaceted and so talented. This is the first time where I like a Korean performer for his acting AND his singing- quite equally at that.
