Apr 30th 2016 | BEIJING | From the print edition

AT THE end of March a website run by the Communist Youth League published news of a remarkable development in China’s staid, heavily censored film industry. A preview had been released online of what is being described as mainland China’s first film focusing on a gay romance, “Looking for Rohmer”. (On television, there have been documentaries about gay relationships before, as well as dramas hinting at them.) The new film, to be shown “soon”, describes the relationship of two young men, one Chinese, one French, as they travel across Tibet.

The two are not shown holding hands, let alone doing anything more intimate. But China’s cultural commissars, rarely open-minded at the best of times, have been in an unusually censorious mood since 2014, when President Xi Jinping stressed that art must “serve socialism”.
Cheng Qingsong, a film critic, says the makers of “Looking for Rohmer” worried that the censors might change their minds after they approved the film for release last year. The trailer’s appearance, and the Youth League’s interest in it, suggests all is well. More broadly, it shows that, despite a political chill, conservative attitudes to same-sex relationships are changing. In the past, homosexuals were sometimes jailed for “hooliganism”. In 1997 the removal of that ill-defined crime from the statute books lifted what was, in effect, a ban on homosexual activity. In 2001 the health ministry struck homosexuality off its list of mental diseases. But public tolerance remains low. Clinics still offer “cures” for gay people, involving electric shocks or nausea-inducing drugs. No well-known public figure in mainland China has come out.

In a recent survey of 18,650 lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people by WorkForLGBT, a China-based NGO, only 3% of the male respondents and 6% of the female ones described themselves as completely out. A third of the men (though only 9% of the women) said they were in the closet. Only 18% of the men said they had come out to their families, and nearly 80% were reluctant to do so because of family pressure. But half the men and three-quarters of the women had come out to friends, an indication that private tolerance is expanding.

The government itself is also becoming less hostile to gays. In 2013 censors permitted websites and newspapers to discuss LGBT issues. Li Yinhe, an academic and promoter of gay rights, says this was a turning point for homosexuals. Online dating services for gays have sprung up. One of the largest of them, Blued (run by a gay former policeman), was read by over 40% of those surveyed by WorkForLGBT.

A milestone was reached at the end of 2014 when a court in Beijing gave its verdict in a case lodged by a gay man against a clinic which had offered to change his sexuality. He accused it of false advertising and malpractice. The court fined the clinic and ruled that homosexuality was “not a mental disease” and did not require treatment. It was the first reported decision of its kind by a Chinese court.

Gay marriage is still not recognised, but public discussion of it is becoming more lively. Some gay people have held unofficial wedding ceremonies. In June, two internet entrepreneurs (pictured) organised one in a park in Beijing, after encountering great difficulty finding a venue willing to host the event. Chinese media gave the celebration much publicity.

Testing the law
In January a court in the southern city of Changsha agreed to hear a suit filed by Sun Wenlin, a 26-year-old man, against a government agency responsible for marriages. Mr Sun said the agency had illegally refused him permission to marry his male partner. On April 13th, with hundreds of gay-marriage supporters outside, the court ruled against him. That was expected. What was surprising was the court’s acceptance of the case, and the official media’s enthusiastic coverage. “It is we who will win in future,” said Mr Sun’s lawyer, as quoted in a Chinese newspaper.

But Hu Zhijun, the co-founder of a support network for lesbians and gays in China, thinks gay marriage will not become legal until there is clear public support, which is still a very distant prospect. “People don’t want those outside the family to know,” he says. “They still fear losing face.”

And although “Looking for Rohmer” has been approved for release, other works have not been so lucky. Early this year, a popular gay online series called “Addicted (Heroin)” was banned—apparently because of its gay content—after several episodes had been uploaded. In December two television-industry associations issued guidelines, recently leaked online, which said televised portrayals of homosexuality were taboo—as were those of extramarital affairs and sexual promiscuity.

Still, a decade ago censors had banned the showing in China of “Brokeback Mountain”, a Hollywood film about a gay romance between cowboys. It was thus, as one Chinese newspaper put it, “unexpected” when “Looking for Rohmer” gained the censors’ approval.

3 a.m, GH suddenly wake up because it's a little cold. While GH's trying to turn down an air conditioner, BLY: "Don't leave me. It's not cold as long as you stay here with me." GH realizes how much BLY loves him and blames himself for what he did last night: "I love you". BLY silently enjoy their love.

At someplace after work, SH sees DS - BLY's self-proclaimed girlfriend. They are partners-in-crime old friends. SH tries to get more information about GH and BLY's relationship. Unfortunately, DS knew nothing more since the day she left GH's company when her delusion was broken by GH. But this woman is hopeless because still think BLY really have some feelings towards her without knowing the one before her is another victim getting lost forever in delusion realm.
DS is also curious about GH and BLY's relationship. Hence, she pick her phone to send her old colleague in GH's company a message.

CHAPTER 16: EVERYTHING IS WELL-SETTLED

MA - the one DS sent the message, is very upset to BLY because her vacation with her boyfriend is destroyed because BLY cut off the contract. She sees a message from DS in her phone: "Long time no see. How are you? Could you help me something? I wanna know how is GH and BLY's relationship after I leave the company?". MA not really like DS since the old time, thinks: "You are helpless. Still wanna come back to BLY. They were already a lovey-dovey husby-husby couple. Alright. I let you lose face this time". She replies: "I have no clues. But didn't see BLY stepped into the company for a long time. GH already got married."
MA tells SH: "GH already got married. BLY didn't come to the company long time ago."
SH thinks over: "It's exactly what I guessed. GH got married because the pressure from his family. BLY is still single after so many years."
Actually, SH thinks though GH already got married, BLY still has an affair with GH because she saw them in the center that day. What she's planning in her head is that if GH can marry another woman to hide his affair with BLY. BLY can do like that too. And she wanna be that woman. That witch  woman always commits evil crimes under the name of love.

At GH and BLY's home, BLY really gets bored because GH's still busy working. Finally, BLY realizes how bored GH was ten years ago when BLY just focus on studying. Is it really karma?
BLY gives a long sigh. A little hot scene after GH hears BLY's sigh.
BLY: "GH, bout your fortune..."
GH: "How? You will accept, right?"
BLY: "No, I cannot"
GH: "Why?"
BLY: "I work in the military. It is abnormal if I have that much fortune. Bad ones may take that as a reason to bring me down. "
GH got BLY's idea: "Hey, how about we go to our father's home tomorrow?"

BLY has no other way. For their stable future, it is the only way.

After being explained, BLY's dad agrees to help them.
On the way home, BLY: "Thank you"
GH: "For what?"

GH: "What do you mean? Why do you have to thank me for that?"
BLY: "Are you really a dork? What are you always that stupid when be with me? Are you really stupid or just pretend?"

BLY finally understand why. GH is not stupid. He just cares about BLY too much. Because he is affraid to misunderstand BLY's idea, he always ask BLY to make everything clear. BLY thinks maybe it is the time for him to be more generous to GH. BLY gently give GH a kiss: "Thank you for trusting us"
GH is surprised: "Are you moved? So let me DO several more times tonight"
BLY gives a kick to GH. BLY changed his mind right after that because this pervert really cannot be well-treated.

Sometimes I found some fans spelled Zhouzhou's name like this (許魏洲) instead of this 许魏洲 (official from his Weibo). I didn't expect that the series itself would misspelled his name too. Just found out about this last night...

Watched the uncut last night... Nothing special. Just an extra 5 seconds showing Bai Luoyin making scrunched up face while doing the pull up towards the end. I think they should better leave it CUT as it is 

I guess the REAL UNCUT would start after episode 10...

Anyway JY looks a lot like his mom whereas I don't see a lot of similarities between ZZ and his mom - so I assume he looks more like Papa Xu? 

edit : yup I saw Xu family photo family photo and I think he looks more like his father. Side note: his sister is pretty too! Good genes indeed run in the family! 

@skeletonworks ah I didn't realise the series uses Traditional Chinese way of spelling 许 (Xǔ) in the opening credits, which is weird since it's a Mainland China web drama  then again, FS uses traditional Chinese character fēng 楓 instead of 枫 (simplified) for his Weibo, and in the series opening credit they use "楓" as well.

(Had to rewatch the cut version opening credit to check whether that was just for uncut version haha.)

Learn something new everyday because of Shangyin  Just like someone posted earlier about learning the geographical aspect of China LOL. Last night I also went and checked Google map where is Dandong, Tianjin, Shanghai, Beijing, how many hours it took to drive from each place to another place  Cuz Zhouzhou was missing for more than 12 hours... Thought he might be on a driving trip or something. Oh well I just assumed he's too busy playing LoL.

In Korea,  許 is used in Korea also. it's korean letter is '허'.

But two is correct, not wrong in Korea.

I think the real uncut ep are on dvd if it will be ever release.

Something like that hahahahaha. I just wished it remained CUT. LOL. The point of UNCUT is showing something worth showing (worthy of being CUT to be shown later) but I don't see there's a point showing that... 

I think it's the "real" uncut that was aired on iqiyi. The DVD will probably contain BTS, extra never seen footages, goodies etc.

I read some conspiracy theories here, but sometimes I feel when I read your post like we are in two different forums. I mean I know you are ZZ biased but man, would you turn it down a notch. Nobody here spread bad rumors about ZZ. As @skeletonworks mentioned before, most of us here love the two boys even with our biases. So, maybe you are preaching in the wrong forum. Since no one here have any bad feelings of ZZ. We love him.

EDIT: @gayyoxx I also do not read any other platform than our forum, that is why I do not understand the post. Maybe they have some malicious rumors and conspiracies on other forum, but I never, please correct me in this, see anyone in this forum bashing ZZ. I saw some bashing JY's fans sometimes ago and inclining a bit that JY had to have some control over his fans (maybe I read this wrong). But, I really don't see any bad rumours in this forum nor bad conspiracy theories surrounding ZZ's. Hence my non coated word in previous paragraph.

Poor ZZ. I hope he gets well soon. Stomach flu usually takes two to three days to recover, right? Where is he now? Beijing?

Edit: also, following @Scandani above, I'd appreciate if someone could inform us here why is it "critical time" for ZZ and what is considered as "unneeded conspiracy" which may harm him? ZZ has been MIA for ten days now, hasn't he? His livestream with ifensi was April 28 and we don't know when the 2 million-welfare videos were shot or when he went to Tianjin. So we haven't seen him live for a long time! What IS he doing? (Apart from being sick, poor fellow.)

Edit: Aww, both ZZ & JY both posted within minutes almost a photo of their moms. It's too sweet. A such a coincidence... Not.  

Something completely different: this bit from the bts always creeps me out for a moment. If this was taken out of context, I'd think ZZ looks victimized. Like he's someone who's used to abuse and just lies there and takes, uncomfortably, unwillingly, but without fighting it. He just lies there, all stiff, looking away, smiling that strange smile, accepting his horrible fate in life. 

JY looks like he doesn't know what to do with ZZ either - he must feel very uncomfortable too, when ZZ seems to refuse to look him in the eye. It's not until the director says 'BLY starts to struggle' that the scene turns into playful again...

Thanks for sharing the info. I hope he gets well soon! I wish he'd be like JY and announced to fans that "I'm sick" but I guess he doesn't want to worry fans. But I always find myself worrying when he's not online more than 12 hours.. >_>

I will try to restraint from speculating so much. Agree. It's not good for him. It's a very very critical time. He doesn't need any more conspiracies from international fans than already are by Cfans..

There are good conspiracies and there are bad ones. I believe no one is this forum would post ungrounded conspiracies such as ZZ is pregnant and celebrate his stomach flu coz it makes the conspiracy correct like what I saw in other forums.

Also I didn't say it before but a lot of conspiracies/ suggestive posts in this forum are proven to be wrong, even with the positive ones and I didn't really stop or correct anyone. For eg, someone said maybe ZZ visited JY in Dandong and had his friends posted the photos that were taken sometime before to cover him up. Well even his friend's filming crew thanked ZZ and Ryan to visit their filming place in their weibo on that day so apparenty that idea was not accurate. I didn't comment on most of the stuff coz I know everyone means no harm. And sometimes being a little bit imaginative is not a bad thing.

I said nothing that is similar to "someone here has bad feeling for ZZ", so please don't get it wrong. However, sometimes the couple's benefit is placed above JY and ZZ's individual benefit in this forum. You can agree to disagree. 

Conspiracies and rumors at the time when either of them is sick is not something I personally love to see. Hence I posted my comment above. Of course everyone here can continue to do whatever they want to do, I gave my share and you did too.  Thank you for your opinion btw

 

Edit: @gayyoxx for some of you who want to know more about the situation in Asia forums, beside some acceptable rumors, now some fans are using ZZ's sickness to paint a conspiracy of how he escaped to Dandong to visit JY, how they wear couple items to challenge the Gov. How it sucks for ZZ to worry bout JY till he falls sick, etc. In short both JY and ZZ are the representatives for LBGT to go against SARFT and noone can stop their love ever.
