Okay, I am one of those people who still don't quite understand why fans give adult men stuffed animals, but this is something new for even me. Can anyone identify what JY is holding? I am confused. What is its significance? scratching-head-smiley-emoticon.gif

Can I have someone translate/summarize the following article?

Spoiler

Article on Terence Chang new company and his vision to improve film quality in China:

http://www.1905.com/m/news/touch/1040267.shtml?open_source=weibo_search&from=singlemessage&isappinstalled=1

I'm particularly interested in the following portion:

'

'

If google translate didn't fail mean, the last highlighted sentence could mean that JY's project (movie) cooperation will help cultivate his acting skill and provide training as part of their cooperation between Chang's company and the film project.

Looking at Chang's company's weibo account, you can see a list of artists it follows, however this account does a lot of promotion for JY (in fact, with the exception of the opening ceremony for the company, they've only post about JY and Chang so far).  In the article Chang talked a bit about wanting to make a lot of quality film, but the most difficult part is finding actors who also have commercial appeal.  I think there is a high probability that JY is the first candidate that the company is going to try to mold from scratch.  Someone with a lot of commercial appeal, show a lot of promise in acting, but have little experience in filming.  Basically a clean canvas to paint on.

Taking the article above into consideration, I can understand why it would be a Zhang Meng film that would be JY's first project.  Meng and Chang shared the same kind of vision for quality film (China has been criticized for their low quality films, if you want to read more on it, click here and here).  They understood the criticism on Chinese films and want to create films that will have commercial success as well as meet the quality standard to be recognized internationally at film festivals.  It looks like Guns & Kidneys will be a great learning opportunity for JY.  I hope this film will be able to bridge the gap between commercial success and quality.

Are they still playing with food? (carrot, leek, still don't know if that was a rice ball) :sweatingbullets:

Or is this an indirect fan response to JY being ill. winter-cold.gif

Oh, It's a habit or cultural trait and are common for Asians. Aside from history how stuffed animals were created, there were already influences from history for exchanging dolls and gifts. In Asia, like for example in Japan, they have this trait of giving gifts to each and everyone especially during holidays, tracing back from friendship dolls from post WWII, and now the softest plushies of cute animals or anime characters. There were also notable cultural traditions in Asian countries for gift giving. We know that boys and girls usually from teens to adults give stuffed toys for the one they like, with teen girls being the most common. But I believe the habit was even popularized in Japan, between girl fans and their beloved boy bands and this trait was even more adopted on romantic anime shows that are epidemic in Japan. Then it was further adopted by neighboring Asian countries mostly fan girls. Since teen girls are more expressive and numerous, this generation have adopted a way in giving much love and appreciation in giving stuffed toys or memorable things to people they like or valuable to them throughout age groups and that includes adults.

Giving stuffed toys or animals to an adult guy can be a sign of symbolism, like an indirect way of saying "this is how you resemble to me" or indirect way of telling "I love you", appreciation or just a way for a remembrance. The giver hopes that the receiver remembers him/her through looking to the stuff toy, feel its softness and make him/her realize the meaning for the messages embedded to it.

@bearology At first, I thought it was a cactus, but when you said it was more like leek. My mind now says it's leek :sweatingbullets: maybe the fan was deceived by imitation or can't find a stuffed cactus toy and brought a look alike.

@filmlore46 tell them it's always valentines or worse advise them to get a girl Otaku friend lol but seriously it's Asian style of simple and cute way of appreciation and expression.

@tea4two Here you go... :D

1905 Movie network: Why do you want to come out again and do the company?

Terence Chang: One of the company's business is making an actor, now the most difficult part in creating a movie film is finding an actor. In many cases, the lack of a box office appeal of the actor can influence the recognition of the issuing company. There are many Chinese actors, but a lot of times the investment company is hoping to target a certain number of people, and that part is the most difficult.

1905 Movie Network: Will you go on training some actors?

Terence Chang: They also have their training programs, but to have their own training plan should need to cultivate actors, or the film project will be foiled by him., this new company is also business and on the other hand,  an investment management.  And I am a person with limited capacity, in the future I want to work with a lot of different young directors, it is not necessarily young, the old (experienced) would also cooperate to make more movies.

---------------------------------------------

You're definitely right about what conditions are considered by the new company and how would JY's popularity can greatly influence this movie "Guns & Kidneys". Chinese movie films are really not cut above the rest and fail to be on the cutting edge, thus criticized nationally and internationally but this new company is ready to give it a shot and would definitely provide training programs to hone their actors "quality" acting skills especially to our Boss Huang Jing Yu. It seems that they have a positive vision and very determined for the positive outcome which is good attitude so that good luck will come and pour unto them.

You can do this Terence Chang! Best of luck Boss JY!

Damn Soompi has eaten yet another one of my posts.  Thank you very much @prima13facie for the detailed explanation.  Your reply explains a lot. giving-thumbs-up-smiley-emoticon.gif I find your explanation about the symbolism of the gesture quite nice...:sweatingbullets: but this was a question posed by my older brother and his friends and the answer was still yikes!!! uh, no thank you t2629.gif even after I tried explaining you detailed post they were all still confused th_smiley8.gifso maybe your explanation of cultural differences does apply here. Maybe they believe they are too adult or too manly for such gifts.  loli.gif
