Movie Theaters Offer Range of Choices for End-of-Year Audiences

Arirang News via The Chosun Ilbo

From large-scale disaster films to action thrillers and romantic comedies, movie theaters are filled with plenty of choices.

Action thriller "Master" dominated the local box office on its opening day of Dec. 21. Disaster film "Pandora" and Hollywood musical comedy "La La Land" have also swept the box office, attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers since their release in early December.

"Star Wars" spinoff "Rogue One," which has already broken records at the box office in the U.S., hit theaters here on Wednesday.

Theaters are also re-releasing some old films -- including the romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle," both of which made Meg Ryan one of the most popular Hollywood stars here in the 1990s.

The flood of new releases is good news for Korean theaters, which experienced a nearly 50 percent drop in attendance in November compared to the previous year, due to the weekly protests calling for the resignation of President Park Geun-hye in Seoul and other major cities.

But theaters are expected to see more moviegoers in the coming weeks of the holiday season.

SEOUL, Jan. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korean action thriller "Master" attracted more than 5 million viewers as of New Year's Day, industry data showed Sunday.

According to the film's distributor CJ E&M, the very strong showing was reached 13 days after its official release. It said the tally was taken at 7 a.m. on Sunday and reflected weekend sales.

The distributor also said that for a film released in December, Master reached the landmark 5 million mark in the shortest period of time, which is a testament to the appeal of the movie with local audiences.

Since it hit the silver screen, Master has captured 43.6 percent of South Korean box office sales.

Besides strong numbers at home, its lead actors Kang Dong-won and Kim Woo-bin as well as the director are expected to go on a promotional tour through Asia. The tour will be held in Hong Kong and Singapore later this month where the stars will be able to meet with prospective moviegoers.

The movie portrays an intellectual war between a con man, his sly right-hand man and a police investigator over a major financial scandal.

The crime action flick "Master" took just 12 days from its release to draw 5 million viewers, reaching the milestone on Sunday.

The film opened on Dec. 21 to much fanfare due to its star-studded cast, which includes Lee Byung-hun, Kang Dong-won and Kim Woo-bin.

It reached the 5 million mark faster than any previous December release, eclipsing "The Attorney," which achieved the feat 13 days after its release in December 2013 and went on to draw 11.37 million viewers in total. "Ode to My Father," which attracted over 14 million moviegoers, took 15 days from its December 2014 release to reach the mark.

"Master" continued to dominate the box office during the New Year weekend, despite a slew of new releases including the Hollywood blockbuster "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

"Master" marches into 2017 over "Rouge One"...

After an impressive opening over Christmas weekend, Jo Eui-seok's crime thriller "Master" (starring Lee Byung-hun, Kang Dong-won and Kim Woo-bin) – Jo's fourth film after "Cold Eyes", "The World of Silence" and "Make It Big" – remained atop the chart by attracting 1.3 million admissions (44%). Despite a small cut in screens, which dipped from 1,501 to 1,261, and the arrival of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", "Master" managed to carry its success forward into 2017 and move its total tally now to 5.4 million ($36.5 million).

To retain pole position, "Master" had to contend with the release of the latest "Star Wars" film that arrived in Korea last Wednesday to 858 screens. Gareth Edwards's "Rogue One" was produced for $200 million and has already grossed over $706 million worldwide; in Korea, meanwhile, the film's first weekend out yielded a modest 523,309 admissions ($5.7 million), or 18.1% of the sales: not enough to dislodge Jo's "Master" in pole position.

Last weekend's number two, Garth Jennings's "Sing", a computer-animated musical comedy from the creators of "Despicable Me", moved its bottom line to $7.5 million (1.2 million admissions) after capturing 10.4% of the sales (348,856 admissions). The race for fourth and fifth place was closely contested: Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" (starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone) and Park Jeong-woo's "Pandora" attracted 275,787 and 247,727 admissions respectively, which moves the former's admission count to 2.5 million ($17.1 million) and the latter's to 4.4 million ($28.7 million). "Pandora" is Park's fourth film to date and only needs another hundred thousand admissions to overtake "Deranged" (2012) as his highest-grossing film.

Japanese animations proved popular over the weekend with no less than four films featuring. Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara's "Rudolf the Black Cat" was the highest Japanese film in the chart having claimed 87,703 admissions (2.6%) from 375 screens; it settled in sixth behind Park's "Pandora". With around 16,000 fewer admissions (71,846) entered "Your Name" by director Makoto Shinkai. "Your Name", based on Shinkai's novel of the same name, continues to receive high praise from critics and filmgoers alike, and the $288.8 million "Your Name" has banked makes it the fourth highest-grossing film released in Japan after "Frozen", "Titanic" and "Spirited Away".

Hong Ji-young's fifth film, "Will You Be There", starring Kim Yoon-seok and Byeon Yo-han, arrived mid-December and entered the fray in third with 408,352 admissions (19.6%); since then, however, Hong's fantasy melodrama moved to fifth during its second weekend, and then to eighth here with 61,084 admissions. In total, "Will You Be There" has attracted 1.1 million admissions ($7.5 million).

The final two places fell to two more Japanese animations featuring two iconic Japanese characters: "Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel" and "Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan 2016". Both films were released in Korea late December, and over the weekend they added 56,994 (1.7%) and 9,945 admissions (0.3%) respectively.

‘Rogue One’ fails to top ‘Master’ in local box office

The highly anticipated “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” could not beat Korean crime thriller “Master,” which topped the local box office for a second straight weekend.

Starring high-profile actor Lee Byung-hun, “Master” sold an impressive 1.37 million tickets from Friday to Sunday at 1,262 theaters nationwide, accounting for 43.9 percent of all sales. Despite criticism that it was yet another crime thriller that local viewers had already seen one too many times before, “Master” has so far sold 5.44 million tickets and raked in 44.17 billion won ($36.6 million), according to the Korean Film Council. It remains to be seen whether the CJ-distributed film will become the first movie in 2017 to reach the milestone 10 million ticket mark.

Gareth Edwards’ “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which ruled the box office in North America upon its release last month, showed a weak performance in Korea. It debuted on Wednesday second in the box office and stayed there over the weekend, selling 523,000 tickets. The film has so far sold a little under 800,000 tickets in Korea.

Illumination’s animated musical comedy “Sing” came in third over the weekend with 348,000 tickets, contributing to a total of 1.17 million tickets sold. The internationally acclaimed “La La Land” came in fourth with 275,000 tickets sold, followed by local disaster film “Pandora” with 247,000 tickets.

Japanese animated film “Rudolf the Black Cat” came in sixth, followed by another Japanese animation “Your Name” that sold 71,800 tickets through previews before its official launch on Wednesday. The upcoming fantasy film about a body swap between a city boy and country girl has earned international acclaim and become the second highest-grossing anime after Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 hit “Spirited Away,” earning director Makoto Shinkai accolades as the next animation king.

The fantasy romance “Will You Be There?,” an adaptation of French novelist Guillaume Musso’s best-selling 2006 book of the same title, ranked eighth. The Japanese animation “Pokemon the Movie XY&Z” came in ninth, and yet another Japanese animated film, “Doraemon the Movie: Nobita and the Birth of Japan,” rounded out the top 10 over the weekend.
