@sara2908  Awww, I just came in here to post that myself! I saw that and had the world's largest motherly smile on my face. I've been trying to see if there's been any notice of Hyeri and this was the cutest thing that we could've gotten :)

I do hope she rests and decides to pass on the drama though :/ (JOIN PBG'S DRAMA INSTEAD!!)

My shipper heart feels rejoice knowing they meet in private. Can't keep my smile off my face:lol:

Deoksun did go home to her husband Taeki per Taek's message

So happy to know that Bogumie and Hyeri are keeping in touch. As Hyeri said before, she became closer to Bogum because they filmed a lot of scenes together. One can see their closeness when you watch BTS. Knowing that Hyeri and Bogum are good friends is enough for me. I won't be greedy. I'll be shipping them as long as they are friends. If ever the time will come that they become more than friends, that would just be the icing on a very delicious cake.

Glad to know that Bogum took some time out of his busy schedule to go and visit Hyeri. I think that I would be happy if he just sent her well wishes or something like that, but he visited her, in person. Wish that Hyeri will get better soon. Hope her company let her rest longer, until she fully recover.

1. The timing wasn’t right.

At 18 years old, DS wasn’t mature enough to understand her emotional needs and inner motivations. The kind of love she would have professed at this point of time would be inadequate to survive in a long-term relationship with a genius like Taek.

This has to be said upfront: Loving a man like Taek is difficult and it takes a special woman to handle the day-to-day stress of being with him. DS needed a bit more self-understanding and growing to do before she could meet the pressure of loving a man attached to the competitive, cerebral world of baduk.  I’m not being sexist here; I’m being realistic. I would say the same thing had the genius been female, the husband had to play the supporting role.

Moreover, if the writer wanted to treat the character of DS like any other stereotypical heroine in love with a mere tsundere guy or a chaebol son, then yes, I could imagine a scene wherein DS would rush out of her house, in horror, from the breaking news. She would then push through the mob of anxious neighbors, and appear magically at Taek’s dad side to offer help. Like an Angel of Mercy.

I could also imagine her grabbing the phone from SW's hand and frantically call up the hotel herself. After allowing his dad to speak to him, she would then rant at Taek for not getting to the phone on time. After all is said and done, she would retreat to Taek’s room to sob in misery. She would then lovingly finger each and every article of clothing of Taek, like a deranged woman, and choke on these words: “But I love you, Taek, and I never got to tell you.” After which, she would prostrate on the ground in supplication to the drama gods to return him safely into her arms. She would have bloody knuckles from gnawing on them through this ordeal. Her hair would be frizzled. She wouldn’t need geisha makeup to attain a pale face.

See that? It would be easy for any scriptwriter to concoct a scene of desperate love "reveal." But I'd be throwing up in the nearest wastebasket because makjang plots never fail to make me bilious.... :D

2. Episode 14 hinted at Deoksun’s trajectory.

For me, Episode 14 was integral to understanding DS’ personality but both Episodes 13 and 14 had to be viewed in tandem.

For instance, in Episode 13, when the neighbors were clucking like hens over a thief, she emerged out of TK’s house, asking if her dad had captured the thief. She didn’t drag TK out with her. She had determined that his baduk preparation was more important than this hue and cry so she let him be. Her ability to manage and cope with stressful time was again on display in Episode 14.

Do you remember that epileptic class president? The scene was a convenient plot device to show that DS could think on her feet, was most reliable in dire situations, and was compassionate. In both these two cases, she could be relied upon to be level-headed and prioritize, which augured well for a married life with TK.

Same thing when she had that conversation on the steps with DongRyung in Episode 14. To me, that conversation showed that despite her momentary self-doubt and confusion, she could be persuaded to look at setbacks with good sense. She could be level-headed then, too.

DR advised her to reflect on understanding the reasons WHY she liked who she liked. She already knew who she liked  -- Didn’t she say that she liked TK? And hasn’t she always favored TK? Remember the manitto gloves? -- What she needed to do, however, was to deepen that level of perception. DR believed her to be capable of such discernment because she wasn’t dumb and she wasn’t a needy, overly-emotional girl.

Later on, when she met up with TK and followed his request to stay awhile in his room to chat, she saw his fan letters. It was funny that she inspected the envelope decorated with hearts, and readily believed TK when he said that he didn’t reply to any of them. Didn’t you notice? She was more upset with TK watching porn with the guys than with him receiving mail from adoring fans.

Again, what did this scene tell me? That she'd be reasonable and level-headed. She knew that TK didn’t have time to entertain those girls, but he certainly did have time to watch those X-rated videos with DR and the gang. She wouldn't die of jealousy but she would kill for smut eradication. lol

In TK’s universe where he was major star, she would require this mantle of equanimity and composure. In Episode 14, she was only beginning to demonstrate these traits. To me, then, any Eureka moment arising from her mental breakdown due to the news of Taec's demise, would be contradicting the natural progression of her character in Episode 14.

3. I prefer the kind of love they have: the “Just because” love.

For me, any kind of love confession, made during extremely emotionally-charged situations and/or physical stress, is highly unreliable and unstable. That's why I deplored JH's public proposal in Episode 18.

I infinitely prefer the quiet moments when TK and DS both confirmed that they liked each other in Episode 14. I think we commented about this in Taeksroom, didn’t we?

When DR had asked DS why she liked TK, she grinned and replied that she liked TK…just because.  She was smiling when she said this. The thought of him made her happy inside. TK mirrored this same sentiment earlier in the episode in a chat with SW.

He said that DS made him smile and made him happy.

He also said that without her, he would die. Notice how SW reacted when he heard the second part of TK’s confession? SW teased him for being too “dramatic”.

Back in Episode 13, JH’s dad also made fun of DS’ dad for wailing that without his wife, he’d die.

That’s why I cringe at the notion of DS “discovering” her love for TK after that faux news report. In my opinion, which is shared with SW and JH’s dad lol, death+love declaration is too melodramatic. Even TK’s dad tried to cover up his initial emotional outburst with a stoic phone conversation with TK afterwards.

Yes, I also understand that the title of Episode 13 is Superman Returns. The obvious references here would be the fathers in the story.

But it could also mean Taec because he had his game on; he was in excellent fighting form. He was the Baduk Superman; and he was baaaack in his game.  But obliquely speaking, behind every Superman there was also a Superwoman. DS who was supporting from behind, standing guard at his door, ensuring that he ate, bidding him off to the competition, wishing him luck, making sure he was warm, assuring him it’s okay to lose… was very much a superwoman behind-the-scenes.  No, I don’t think she really didn’t need a Eureka moment to PROVE that she loved TK. Actions spoke louder than words.

I think the kind of love that the scriptwriter aspired for TK and DS was a mutual bonding that grew steadily in time, by choices made, simple but profound. Their love wasn't meant to be rushed. It was an ORGANIC love.  For me a Eureka moment in Episode 13 was moot AND inconsistent with the narrative of DS... as I understood.

On the flip side of this coin, TK was still growing in ways that he needed to in order to take care of DS too. He needed to change from being someone that DS saw as a kid and felt she needed to take care of/protect all the time, to being someone that DS felt she could rely on. He goes through this trajectory throughout the series; which is why DS and TK are the only two kids that I feel show significant changes in character by the end of the series.

It went from DS saying “wait for Noona” when they go to get tteokbokki [ep 8], to TK standing guard outside the restroom for DS [ep 12, flasher], to TK forfeiting a Baduk match for DS [ep 18].

I also prefer the “organic love” that evolved between DS and TK. Nobody stays the same for their entire life; nobody. Growing up, having kids, major car accidents or historical events [9/11 anyone?] all change how people think and behave. If TK had just fallen for DS because of certain traits of hers, what would happen when she changed? She could possibly lose all those traits and there’s no guarantee that she would retain/build other traits that TK liked. This is completely hypothetical of course because they grew up together and saw changes in each other from childhood to adulthood, but I’ve always been of the mind that a love built on a basis of friendship is much stronger than other types of love.

Would you mind checking if she did call him Heedongie in Episode 14? She was asking him how many pills he took and she said good job. Heedong-ie or Heedong-ah? Thanks.

She said:  "Good job!  Uri Heedong-ie, good job!"

Thanks for making these gifs!

What were they actually asking the cameraman here?

According to Koreaboo, Hyeri was asking, "Do you want to part ways with me?" and Bogum shook his head.

Is that true? lol.

I think in this scene she asked "Am I pretty?"

But the one you are referring to is this scene, minute 5:40

We have three young couples in the drama. I believe the men have something in common. All three lost something important to them. JB lost his health. He had a heart surgery when he was young. It limited him with things that he can do. Somehow he lost his dreams too(basketball player and pilot)

SW lost his dad and his youth. Though his mother tried to make his life as normal as possible, he opt to become the "father of the family" and became a very responsible guy that lives for his family. He even chose a career his mom picked for him.

Taek lost his mom at a very young age and his youth. Even though his dad tried his very hard to fill up the hole his mom left we all knew that it's just not the same. When Taek chose Baduk before school, he lost his chance to make more friends and to fully experience being young. He matured on a worldly way so much earlier than the others.

Maybe it's a message of the writer that though you have suffered when you were young, if you persevered in life, what you lost will be given back to you in tenfolds.

Reposting this from the baduk thread/PM. Thanks @fangurling123 for reminding!

Vampires and the Spirit of Baduk

The baduk board represents the universe, and baduk was Taek's world. When DS ignorantly placed a stone right at the centre of the board in ep 4, she metaphorically placed herself at the centre of Taek's universe.

24519334293_674b4e0b80_o.png

Black and white stones represent two opposing forces in the universe; yin vs yang. There are a few ways to end a game. Ideally, a game is ended by agreement. When a player believes that he cannot gain more territory, capture more stones or reduce his opponent’s territory by playing on, he may choose to pass on a move. When both players pass consecutively, the game will end.

This reflects the fundamental philosophy of balance/equilibrium, in which two opposing forces attack and defend against each other to finally achieve a harmonious state of peaceful co-existence.

There are two camps of baduk players, 勝負師 vs 求道派. The first camp is fixated on the sole objective of winning, while the latter emphasises the art of playing baduk. I believe the writer belonged to the latter camp and was trying to tell Taek victory wasn't everything.

In ep 16-17, Life is Irony I & II, he won the ING Cup but he couldn’t make his final move by confessing to DS. Just then, the yin-yang kiss happened.

TK = black (coffee) = night (darkness) = yin ()
DS = white (milk) = day (light) = yang ()

During the yin-yang kiss, Taek thought it was a dream (yin/night) while DS knew it was reality (yang/day). The line between dreams and reality was blurred, and for the first time, yin and yang united. It was symbolic of the harmonious balance between yin and yang, the fundamental philosophy of baduk, and that was what the writer wanted to convey.

Light vs Darkness

1988.09.22
Who am I? Do I want to be a sky?
The light crushes the darkness and brightens everything.
The light even brightens the darkness.
The darkness covers the light and makes everything become dark.
It’s ridiculous act and impossible to get rid the light with light.
The light breaks the darkness and only the darkness that can break the light.

This was DS' entry entry, translated by @rynn_peace . It talked about the battle between light (yang) and darkness (yin). The concluding statement "The light breaks the darkness and only the darkness can break the light" didn't imply that light should win, or darkness shall prevail. Instead, it hinted at a balance of power between light and darkness.

Taek = Night, DS = Day

In the past, white played first, then black. The interchanging moves between white and black represented how day interchanged with night. Taek had problems sleeping at night. While everyone else went to bed, he stayed up late to practice baduk, and often ended up sleeping in the day. His dad advised him to drink milk to help him sleep better, and as @packmule3 pointed out, milk represented DS.

25027924122_82593a49b9_o.png

Also, I found it deeply amusing that the writer would suggest that Taek was a vampire, as @mangachickava shared, since vampires belong to the night. And so essentially, R88 was one long “Interview with the Vampire”!

Milk + Coffee = Milk Coffee

Taek had always drunk milk and coffee separately. It was DS who taught him that milk could be mixed together with coffee to make milk coffee. The act of mixing milk (white) and coffee (black) represented the harmonious convergence of yin and yang.

24519342563_0959daec2f_o.png

Winning is Not Everything

Like Lee Chang Ho, Taek was high competitive and he couldn’t stand losing. In ep 4, he cried and even cursed to vent his frustrations for losing to a newbie. DS was the one who kept reminding him it was OK to lose.

25146198475_2cdecb636a_o.png

Notably, Taek’s romantic plans and advances were pegged to his victories.

1. He made his first move of asking her out for a movie after he won the World Baduk Championship.
2. After winning the Fujitsu Cup, he gave his winning trophy to her.
3. He planned to confess to her after winning the ING Cup.

But when he couldn’t confess to Deoksun after winning the ING Cup, he gradually came to realise that winning wasn’t everything. His subsequent winning streak only served to rub salt into his wound.

Thereafter, he devoted his time to Baduk in a bid to distract himself from Deoksun. But despite winning matches after matches as Choi Taek 9-dan, he wasn’t happy at all. He had to rely on sleeping pills to ease his suffering. In the past, Baduk was Taek’s everything. He ate, slept and played Baduk. But gradually, Duk Seon became his top priority. That was why he chose to forfeit a match for her without any hesitation. This showed that Taek got his priorities right and understood what the writer was trying to tell him, that winning wasn’t everything.

@packmule3, Thank you! All the points you raised made perfect sense and made me appreciate more the intent of the scriptwriter with regard to depicting Taek's and Duk Seon's relationship. I will save your post and re-read for Reply 1988 appreciation.

Fortunately, your post has also clarified another thing that baffled me about the drama: It had something to do with how Taek's and Jung Hwan's love for Duk Seon were depicted in the drama. I could understand the reason for the uproar when Taek was revealed as Duk Seon's husband in Episode 19. Remember the iconic scene toward the end of Episode 18 when both men raced to the concert venue to be with Duk Seon who was stood up by her date? Notice how only Jung Hwan's  "mad-love rush" was shown, from the moment he darted out of the theater, tripping as he was racing toward his car, struggling to open the door, and speeding twice to beat the red light? Classic Kdrama love story narrative that captivates the viewers' hearts. Ironically, none of Taek's efforts were played out. Only the scene where he arrived short of breath to be with Duk Seon to watch the concert. We are not given scenes where he "dramatically" announces he's forfeiting the game, rushing and getting lost finding the concert venue. We just hear about the forfeited game over the radio. This jives well with the point you raise about the scriptwriter wanting to portray an organic love between our OTP, a love story that's very much grounded in reality, freed up of any KDrama love story stereotype.

However, on a happy note, I noticed that in critical low moments of Duk Seon, it was Taek who was with her: The incident with the "flasher" and after the "university-admission conference" of Duk Seon with her Mom.

Congratulations Team Suntaek!

I'm really happy that we were able to place 3rd and show our love and dedication towards the couple in the past round. It's been a pleasure voting and the entries have been an absolute treat for the eyes and the heart. The entries were stunning and comforting at the same time.

3. Park Bo Gum & Lee Hyeri (SunTaek Couple) [4,169 + 4,528 = 8,697]

Either way, I'm really pleased we got through to the next round. I can't wait for FF round, it is my favorite to be honest. Who's participating? @hafunohane, you're the one to PM for this, right?

Guyssss,

It's long time that I come back to this paradise...I'm still lurking but so happy to make my post of my fanfiction.

A day in their life.

As usual, Choi Taek is sitting in his room and practicing baduk. He will have an important match with 9-dan player from Japan. His mind is static, and his face still keeps a facial expression all the time, completely focuses on how to break through the battle that is made by himself.

However, Choi Taek doesn’t spend too much time for solving it, covering and breaking, he can do both perfectly. Despites with the serious atmosphere in room, it’s raining heavily outside, accompanied with continuous rumbling thunders.

The one who is sitting in front of baduk board, his brain is still concentrating on the his own battlefield, doesn’t give any attention to the noise.

“Knock Knock!”

Someone is knocking the main door but can not run to his genuis mind.

“Knock Knock!”

Someone still knocking the door patiently but the sound was hidden by noisy thunder outsized. Duk Seon is trying to knock the door, but she receives no answer from the people inside this room, then she opens the door, as slow as possible to keep the silent atmosphere.

When she enters the room, she only sees her Taekie completely falling in his world of black and white pieces. She sighs, then walks on her tiptoe straightly to the window, pulls the windows which was opened and gently gaps themclosed. Rainwater has been make the floor get wet at the conner. When the window is closed, all the noisy sounds is shut off, leaves the room became quite and peaceful. However, it also makes the locking sound become louder. Duk Seon startls and turns her sight to Choi Taek, just afraid to disturb him.

Taekie is looking at her. She don’t know he starts looking from when, then talk with him shyly.
“Did I bother you?”
Taek shakes his head.
“I saw the rain, and remember that your window was opened this morning. I’m afraid that you will not close it when you are focusing on practicing baduk…I knocked the door but didn’t get your answer so I have to enter without your permission. I will clean this place silently. so you can keep practicing…I will leave soon.”

Choi Taek just smiles and says:

“ Duk Seon ah, just wait there!!!”

Then he stands up, goes to his closet. Choi Taek took two towels and hurries back to Duk Seon. He used one towel, cover her hairs, and sits down, uses the other to gently wipe the her wet feet. He covers up the bind of her trousers to absorb rainwater.

“You maybe ran into rain hurrily, right? Your binds were wet already. Your feet used to be injured, if you jumps into the cold water, it will hurt again. And I will be worry a lot, Duk Seon ah!”

Duk Seon keeps silent while holding the hair in the towel, warmly looking down the one who was wiping her feets, at the moment she can’t say anything. Choi Taek then puts the towel aside, cover his warm hands on her feets, until he feels they were warmed enough, then he stands up to face her.

He saw Duk Seon is still wiping her hairs slowly, then he hold her towel, including her hands inside his. Duk Seon can feel his warmth, through the long fingers. She even can feel the callous on his forefinger because he has to hold his chess a lot. Choi Taek holds her hands more tightly, then starts to wipe her hairs with some soft gestures.

Duk Seon is standing face to face with him, there is his charm face and his slender nose. Duk Sun looked at his pale face and circles around his dark eyes, painful whisper:

“ Taek-ah, you can use the sleeping pills, just a little is ok, as long as you sleep enough…"

Choi Taek stops, looks down to her eyes, then smiles with her.

“I’m fine, Duk Seon ah, your hair is longer…and beautiful too!“

Duk Sun listened to his low voice, just bashful ly look at a different way, leave her hair in his slow moving, then suddenly remember an important thing, she said:

” I forgot. You have important match tomorrow. I have to leave…“

Duk Seon withdrawn her hands, feeling the coldness shocked her them but she knows Choi Taek need ps more time to practice for his match, then unwillingly steps our of their conner.

Choi Taek, just in a quick move, hold her hand.

“ Duk Sun ah, it’s still rain outside…”

“ Don’t worry, I’ll run as fast as possible…”

“ I mean, don’t go, just stay here with me…"

Duk Seon listens to his request, stops moving but still keeps concern about his tomorrow match.

Choi Taek, just in a moment did not follow his baduk playing habit of defend, makes one step forward then closes his door…

Enjoy!!

[as Jung Bong Oppa voice!!!]
