Guys, I know some of you are reluctant to go to main thread, so please find under spoiler, another eye-opening (?) observations from @packmule3. Seriously, this calls for marathon watching Reply 1988 tonight  I agree with her saying that it's a disservice to observe TK merely through a shipper’s pair of distorting spectacles. He’s not what people think he is.

It’s easy to spot JH’s jealousy because he’s the lead male character in this story. We know about his feelings for DS, so we expect his jealousy of SW and TK. Each time, SW and TK interacted with DS in a meaningful way, the camera FOCUSED on his facial gesture (i.e., downturn eyes, grimace, averted face, etc.), and we get a visual of his jealousy.  We can READ his mind. We have to give kudos to the actor Ryu Jun-Yeol; he emoted well for the task he had to do. 

TK, on the other hand, has an EXPRESSIONLESS FACE. We’re told this in Episode 2. 

Plus, he’s supposedly a genius, making him difficult to read, for people with average minds. That is, unless we see things from HIS EYES... 

I’ll give you FIVE instances when he showed signs of jealousy. Prior to his discovery that JH's feelings for DS, he already exhibited jealousy. 

1. Jealous of DR. I’ll start with this one because it’s easy to understand, and you'll get the pattern of behavior quickly.

Given DR’s easy and chummy behavior with DS, it’s easy to misinterpret their closeness. I like the sense of the absurd that DS-DR shippers have. But JH was guilty of misinterpretation himself in Episode 5. The camera FOCUSED on HIM to show his reaction when he chanced upon DS and DR alone together in TS’ room. Unlike the mute TK, JH expressed himself verbally so we know what he was feeling. 

What most viewers do NOT realize is that previously in Episode 4, TK was also jealous of DR’s closeness with DS, too. Remember when he handed JH the finished Rubik’s cube? lol. Didn’t anybody wonder about the ABRUPT timing of that? TK had that Rubik’s cube beside him all that time. Why didn’t he hand it back earlier? Why at that particular time? 

JH, and most viewers, naturally assumed that TK was annoyed with DR for insulting his lack of English knowledge. It makes sense, of course, but it's a misdirection. Try LOOKING at the situation from Taek’s perspective and SEEING the whole scene -- as it unfolded -- from the eyes of a genius in love with a girl.  Pay attention to the CAMERA ANGLES. 

Instead of the camera focusing on TK’s face -- like the director does with ALL of JH’s jealous scenes -- the camera here was positioned as if WE, the viewers, were Taek’s eyes LOOKING at the scene.  See the screenshots 1, 3, 4, and 5. The camera PURPOSELY shifted from a general view [screenshot 2] to a “Taek’s perspective” to show us the reason for his JEALOUSY. 

Do you get it? TK wasn't irritated that they were talking about "idioms" and teasing him about NOT knowing idioms. He's a genius, for pete's sake. Who cared about idioms? lol 

However, Taek was getting irritated at how friendly DR and DS looked together.  They looked *too* chummy with each other. With their "Dukseon and I" comment and jokes. They look conspiratorial. Partners....

Thus, when DR said, “You don’t know things like that, do you?” THEN grinned back at DS -- like they were some kind of close buddies – he put an end to all that by handing the finished Rubik’s cube to JH.

Do you get it?  He didn't protest or accuse or insinuate anything like JH did. He only said "here" and put DR in his place. 

Whatever suspicion JH felt in the atmosphere between DR and DS Episode 5, TK also felt in Episode 4. The boys both sensed that DR and DS were *too* close.  The major difference, however, is how the director handled the two scenes. The director didn’t show us TK’s jealous face because the script didn't have words from him. Instead, the director showed us how TK’s GENIUS MIND work.

2. JH. I hinted at this in my first post here. TK noticed when JH flopped in front of DS [seen from Taek’s perspective]. Then the camera showed us his face, and how his eyes shifted from DS to JH [3rd person perspective]. He was observing the two of them together but he noticed nothing odd or out-of-place about the two.

lol. You know me, @Lhej well. I give hints because I assume that people are bright enough to get the point on their own eventually. My advice for this kdrama is to pay attention to the camera shots. They’re deliberate in this kdrama.

3. SW’s confess-on-the-first-snowfall! scene.  I told you, ladies, that ONLY TK’s close-up was missing, didn’t I?

Feel free to rewatch the scene. BUT this time, get inside TK’s head and see what he was seeing as this whole scene unfolded.

4. This school field trip. lol.  I heard that some people thought I was delusional and over-thinking it. Nope! I analyze the script; I ship the scriptwriter.

5. And lastly, the hotel concierge [Ep 10]. lol. I reserved this for last because I thought it was a riot. Nobody saw that coming, right? Let's break down that scene.

At first, TK's face is blurry/out-of-focused as he walks back to the lobby. His words, “DS. Let’s go upstairs.” can be viewed as neutral, but it can also be viewed as somebody announcing to people within earshot that he has claim over THIS girl. They’re going back upstairs TOGETHER. Contrast this scene with their arrival. Remember? Back then, he only said, “I’ll head up first; I’ll go ahead.”

Now, look at the camera angles again. It's from his perspective. What does he see? He sees a pretty girl leaning against the counter talking to the guy who helped him enjoy his stay at the hotel. Now, the camera shifts. Follow his eyes. He looks at the guy, he figures out that the guy isn’t a “threat”, then he smiles at DS and agrees to pose with the guy. 

But then, his baduk manager casually remarks upon the easy-going relationship between the guy and DS. [Similar situation as DongRyong. lol]

Look at the shift in camera perspective.  We’re seeing this scene from TK’s eyes again now. He hears what his manager had just said and he hears DS confirming that they've indeed become become friendly through their arguments. Now he also observes that, NOT ONLY is DS looking very cute as she stands there, but she ALSO looks like she’s flirting with the guy. hahaha.  There’s something flirtatious about the way DS is leaning against the counter and the two of them are grinning. He's excluded again.  

That’s why he looks like this here: unsmiling. Kinda sulky. And secretly jealous.

Got that? lol. Do you see it now, @Lhej?

Long before he became jealous of JH, TK has always been jealous of DS’s interaction with boys. He’s been observing her all along. Quietly. Unobtrusively. That’s his character. The scriptwriter constructed a very detailed TK and the director went through all that hassles of camera shot selection -- and props, lol -- to give us clues. 

We do the script and the production team a great disservice by observing TK merely through a shipper’s pair of distorting spectacles. He’s not what people think he is.

Oh yeahhhh, re. the chopsticks.  Have people figured out why?  lol.  TK also lied about being cold, too, in Episode 13. How do we know he was lying? Two incongruous things: 

1. DS always feels the cold more than TK does. [Remember that scene when they walked back to her house for dinner? TK wasn’t wearing a jacket, and she told him off. In the next episode 14, she was complaining of the bitter cold when she opened the door, yet TK wasn’t wearing socks. He was sockless, too at his home while his father and DR were all bundled up.] And here, she answers TK that she isn't feeling cold. 

2. DS is eating ICE CREAM. [Sneaky choice of prop there, director! #nicetry #fail #wesawthat] 

I think if you connect the two lies, abusing the chopsticks and feeling cold in Episode 13, you’ll figure out why he does these things. And noooo… I don’t believe he’s being manipulative or clingy.

This is really random...but when it comes to Taek , I crave more ,I want to know him more..

like im pretty sure there will be flashback during his secondary, I want to know how smart he is, and why he stop schooling? How he is in his academics?  being genius means until what extend?. I've watch variety shows about genius kids, and they really need to put in a very special schools/home school because normal lessons make them bored..

im a bit curious aside from Baduk is he's also genius in academics or other stuff ..oh Taek what have you done your occupying my weekends and my mind..hihihihihi!^^

Eps 17 is supposed to be aired today if its not for the delay. I think i am going crazy waiting. Just hoping its worth the wait. 

Just one question although it might have been asked by someone else (i havent done reading all the posts here). The scene where taek follows ds to the washroom after the flasher incident, it doesnt seem that taek purposely follow ds because she's afraid or maybe taek was being subtle about it.  He appears to be pretty clueless when ds looks back at him. Just wondering if there's anything that hinted that taek was actually accompanying ds? (WOuld like to have flashbacks and voice over on how he felt that time if taek really ended up the husband).

By the way, i am heartbroken by the fact that taek is back to his previous habit, taking so much sleeping/headache pills.

@nearsea but we're also assuming that rjy is the lead, right? (because of the billing & marketing strategy) ksh didn't get the girl but he had more screentime than the other casts (cth had lesser screeentime too! but he got the girl!) ksh was charming with ghj, they had heart-fluttering moments but ghj-cth had a deeper history, not to mention *heavy* childhood/teenage flashback scenes, I know writer Park Ji Eun is different from writer Lee Woo Jung but she also tried putting interesting details on her characters (ex. wardrobe, endgame couple frequently wore stripes) they bicker BUT musicbank PD knows 1N2D PD well & vice versa, that's why even if ksh was there to make his *moves* he was not able to break that pretty solid relationship that the PDs have. Sounds like TK~DS to me. Someone mentioned about In Time With You in this thread before...actually, its korean version Time We Were Not In Love made some viewers remember reply1997 (sechs kies's song "Couple" was used in a flashback scene too) I wonder if the reply team had seen those shows because TK-DS are almost close to giving us that *we're-so-close-what-if-you-fall-in-love-with-another-woman* vibe.

Hello @nasokenTo answer your question. TK followed DS intentionally. The first time, he saw how pretty shaken she was because of the flasher. The 2nd time she wanted to go again, TK stood up and followed, this time to protect her. DS wasn't aware that TK was following her because he's "light on his feet"( he walks without making a noise. We can notice that light walk also when he caught SW-BR a second time and BR commented about his light feet). It was only when DS turned back that she saw him and felt relief and then TK said he came out to have a smoke(yeah right. We all know he's lying about that).

Hi @nearsea I will try to explain. I hope my interpretation is correct. I'm sure about "feeling cold" part but still a bit unsure about chopstick. My guess is the reason for both is the same.

She showed us little detail that I honestly missed: the fact that Taek was lying to DS about feeling cold in above scene which then resulted in her putting ice cream in her mouth and ZIPPING UP HIS JACKET. 

She argued that Taek is lying about feeling cold because of 2 facts:

1. DS always feels the cold more than Taek does; and 2. She is eating ice cream (in the cold, really?). So @packmule3 wanted to show us the length of efforts that PD did to translate the writer's writing about Taek's sneaky smooth ways to get more attention from DS (?). They showed in previous scenes how DS is more affected by cold compared to Taek, she constantly nagging him to wear warmer clothes/ socks. On top of that, they also gave DS an ice cream to eat in that particular scene to emphasize the fact that it's not that cold, YET Taek said the opposite to DS. We know what happened then after that scene, DS zipped up his jacket and look how happy he is when she does that.

Regarding the reason, I don't know.. maybe I am too slow? Is it just because he wants more attention from DS? What about chopstick? Is it because he has some sort of image to maintain? A way to blend in with the other?

Anytime Packmule3 posts on the MT, I always feel like I haven't watched the show well enough. Baaaaahhh...going back to watch it again. 

@nearsea PM3 meant that TK is a lying liar that ever lieth (in a cute way) lol. Last time, she talked about TK knowing how to use the chopsticks and she was right. TK really does know how to use his chopsticks.Very.well. 

Now she talked about the "Cold" scene. If you have noticed TK's dressing when he's at home, he's mostly "socksless" and doesn't really wear coats,knowing fully well that its winter. Haha..now I'm going to point out scenes straight outta my head  about the "Cold".

1. The secret Santa episode: when TK ran out of his house because he forgot he was DS' Secret Santa, he wore a short sleeve shir and if you look at his feet, he wore slippers with no socks(before he ran out to meet her,he visited the bathroom). Notice DS' clothes? It was pretty cold that night but TK DID NOT FEEL COLD OR EVEN SHIVER.

2. The episode when appa TK got sick/operated on: When DS's mum told DS to go call TK for dinner. She was almost close to his gate when he came out with A SHORT SLEEVE BLACK SHIRT. DS complained about it.

3. When TK went to DS' place to give her a banana. He wore a GREY LONG SLEEVE SHIRT BUT WAS SOCKSLESS. He even walked bare foot to her house. DS complained about it too and covered his feet. 

4. The episode where DR invited them all to the restaurant. TK came into the restaurant with a winter jacket but it wasn't ZIPPED UP. We will give him a pass there but Notice the word I used. 

5. The "its OK to lose episode: DS came down the corner and waved to TK. he saw her and excused himself from his teacher and father and went to meet her. They talked and blablabla and then she asked him if He wasn't feeling cold or something (memory is vague on what she said here), he smiled and said he was while she ZIPPED him up. Like @shooastrid pointed out. The weather wasn't too cold because DS was having ice cream but our cute liar said he felt cold. Lol. 

TK feels cold, yes BUT the "cold"  is not enough for him to wear HEAVY CLOTHING. When your body gets exposed to cold frequently, it begins to adjust to the situation. Its still not healthy though and its the reason why DS complains about it. Which means TK can act like he doesn't know how to use chopsticks (when he actually can use it well) and act like he's feeling cold(when he is not) OR he Actually feels cold but just loves to hear DS complaining and getting worried for him. That naughty boy. He's acting wiser than we can ever imagine.

This is just a bonus. 

Future Hubby Wore a GREY LONG SLEEVED shirt and had no socks on his feet. DS complained too. Lol.

@shooastrid Thank you so much .So should I take it this way that,he wants to be pampered by deok sun,to have her attention,and also as someone who takes care of him,like his father said,how they've same way of showing attachments to people whom they like/love.Omg I wonder how many more mysteries remain to be solved.As for the reason,if,if these HINTS are really as we're digesting they are,then there MUST be a flashback right? Where we get a look at taek's expressionless face and mind.As the saying goes,'Silent people have the loudest mind.'

Now if you put it this way, isnt it already obvious that Taek is the husband? Becos it make more sense when husband from future grumbled "Why do you spend so much time with the boys?" If Taek has been jealous of the others long before JH had his DS wake up call awareness, surely he(TK) had been worried & annoyed on her casualness with the guys.

Also the future hubby jealousy over the chocolate gift that happens 27years ago implied hubby is clueless abt his wife past crush...and up until ep 16 Taek has no idea abt DS having a crush at any of the boys from their street, and Taek only just find out abt JH's feeling for DS, not the other way around. If the hubby is JH it just didn't make sense he wud make much fuss abt it after 27years when he has known all along tru out the years abt her crush for SW. So I still think its the biggest clue saying Taek is the husband & he didnt know abt SW first hand. It was either he read her diary after they're married or he heard it from a certain bionic ear guy with a huge blabbermouth in one of their reunion/gathering. 

Also why does  the camera focus from TK eye view/pov if he is not the main lead actor/hero?

Me too...everytime I read packmule3's review, I feel like I missed so many things. Which is why I want to re-watch the episodes with new fresh set of eyes. 

Think the PD will give us a whole episode of flashbacks?!?! Please?? Pretty please?  There are so many things we are curious about. 

One more thing...maybe it's DR who's doing the interview. Given that we have this feeling that DR would be in the entertainment industry, wouldn't it be more possible that he's the interviewer? The adult characters seems to be comfortable with the interviewer. Taek ( I meant adult husband  ) talked about going for a smoke,  BR was actually smoking, NL was childish, if it was another interviewer, they would have been in their best behavior.
