Hello chingus! I know where that is, it's on Dramabeans comment thread.. It's a comment made by Baekie. I remember because I loved what the writer said about Taek being home and I didn't know until now that Taek's name in Korean literally means "home" and "making a difference". And in Japanese "husband". That really is our Taekie.. someone familiar and warm as home to the squad and making a difference by defying drama tropes. Wow!

Delurking to post this for @bluesteyes from packmule. Because you’re willing to be delusional, she says. But please stop with the "richard simmons". 

 

On room service and China, January 1989.

The pieces of this theory have long been on my back-burner because I didn’t know quite what to make of them. But since people are going to accused me of being delusional, I might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb.   So here goes.

After TK’s win, he and DS went back to his hotel room. He promised his Dad to treat DS to good food. TK was a filial son. 

 

They most likely ordered room service because he was exhausted to go out. They would have ordered drinks like a soda, Shirley Temple or a cocktail. I’m leaning towards a Beijing Bellini but this was concocted in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics. Oh well... 

Take note: They were both over 18 at that time. The minimum drinking age in China is 18, while in S. Korea it’s 19.  Taec said he was a minor when he gave his staff money to buy themselves a round of soju.  However, his friends said that he had brought home bottles of alcohol from his tournaments for his dad even before he turned 18th birthday. He also brought one bottle home on his birthday.  

Whatever drink they had with their meal, I’m assuming it had a cocktail umbrella in it. Like this one:

There was something off and jarring about that whole incident with the parfait.  If an ice cream parfait was brought to her table, I expected DS to go gaga at the sight of the sweet perfection. After all, 

1) She LIKES ice cream. The Adult DS was eating ice cream in Episode 6 and Episode 18. 
2) DR was taunting her for being unrefined and “uncultured”. She would have pounced on that ice cream like she’d been starving all day long. In China, she didn’t even know that a duck’s head isn’t like a drumstick she could chomp on. lol. No meat.

Now, what did DS do when she saw the ice cream concoction? 

She passed up TWO ice cream parfaits for that little cocktail umbrella. That, my friend, made absolutely no sense. 

She was so excited about umbrella topper, that she quickly licked off the ice cream on the toothpick and tuck it behind her ear. Then she posed. Where did she learn to do that? 

I think she’s learned it before during her first trip abroad to China. And she had a tutor. Who?

THAT guy sitting right beside her and GRINNING at her antics. Taec. lol. They’ve done this before. In China. 

Why do I think this?

Well, my detractors say I’m crazy, but you @bluesteyes say I’m Do Min Jun. Huh? Who's she?

But I say there was something peculiar about her whole behavior during this conversation.  

 

The Adult DS was definitely hinting at something. She was insistent on jogging the Husband’s memory.  First, she called him over on the pretext that she didn’t recall the date the picture was taken.  Second, she nudged him with an elbow, tapped the photo frame, and then poked his knee. 

The funny thing is SHE clearly remembered the events of that day. Observe her body language. She brought the frame close to her heart as if she was “treasuring” her memories.  If she couldn't recall anything, she should have brought the frame closer to her eyes to SQUINT at the details of the picture. 

Moreover, she was telling HIM that it was the BEST DAY of his life. Then, she followed it up coyly with a “How could you remember something that happened 30 years ago so well?”  All the while, the Adult Husband remained silent...lol. 

The fact is, @bluesteyes: Up until the time of their photograph, NOTHING happened to VALIDATE the claim that it was the “best” day of TK’s life. Sure, he won, but whoop-de-doo! He wins often anyway.

So my question is what happened after their pictures were taken? Now there’s the big leap of faith, @bluesteyes. If I were the writer and I wanted to mess with you, I'd make that kiss dream sequence in Episode 17 a suppressed memory of the real thing in China. Plot twist, eh? Lol. 
 
But I'm being nice so all I'll say is they had a drink that day/night in China. Because it was her first time drinking, she became tipsy. And that was why TK was teasing her here: “Do you want WATER?” [Inside joke? water instead of alcohol? to keep you sober, so you could see the date on the photograph next time.]

And her very unamused response: “No, thank you. I hope you choke on it.”

Additionally, last week’s Episode 18 had so many drinking scenes, it would drive an abstemious man to drink. It reminded me of the jacket episode, Episode 2, where there was so much fuss about a jacket.  Watch this episode again and notice that the episode began and ended with drinking...and waiting.  They were waiting for TK at the beginning and they were waiting for TK at the ending. 
 
Now, what did the mother of DS say about the star of the show coming last? I have to ask another friend to repost that missing post for me. 
 
BTW, TK paid particular attention to her drinking that night, too.

Omg! Pls make it like that! Like Taek staying always in Deoksun's house something like that (I have many scenarios in my mind hahaha) I'm getting hyped up here from the spoiler why do this to me? call me being delusional lols. I'm so nervous and at the same time excited! 

But, for sure there will be childhood flashback and probably we will see Taek's POV he might narrate. That spoiler is the filming from episode 20 which is the last episode I think.

I actually got a little  emotional talking to my friend about what an amazing character Taek is, this quiet, peculiar boy genius with his quirks and his shyness, who barely appeared at the start and now near the end of our story, has peeled back layer after layer, to emerge with one of the most unique character arcs in recent kdrama history.

 

How many of us could have guessed Taek would still be a contender as we head into the finale, and as I personally feel, the  stronger contender? I certainly for one was resigned to just loving Taek on the side. But he's not on the peripherals anymore, not even close, he's shining in an incredible way, regardless of what happens with the husband hunt.

 

Taek has taken all the assumptions and preconceived beliefs about him and challenged them all. He's not an idiot, he's smart, and not just at baduk, and he's shown his perceptiveness and consideration to be on an incredibly high level. He's not just the one everyone babies and takes care of, he steps up when it really matters and oh how he does step up. He's not innocent and naïve, he smokes, he commands respect in a cut-throat competitive world and he has passions and desire and a quiet, fierce intensity.

 

I mean doesn't this parallel just say so much about how he's grown up and how his relationship with Deoksun has evolved?

 

 

People pigeonholed him as chilbongie 2.0 when he joined the love triangle, and I am so, so glad he  has not been reduced to just the boy who loves the girl. We see his strengths and his flaws, his insecurities (and so much kudos to Park Bo Gum for absolutely slaying with his multi-faceted portrayal). We see his bond with his father, with Sunwoo and Dongryong and Junghwan, individually and all together and we see him and DS as genuine friends who think the world of each other, before anything else, and it makes me so very happy.

 

If we are given the beautiful conclusion we are hoping for, then it only makes his, and our, 1% to 100% journey, all the more remarkable.

I can never find anything when I need it.  I saw a post in tumblr awhile back that I wanted to share but I'm going to have to paraphrase. I don't know if anyone has brought this up before so I apologize in advance if this is redundant because I haven't had time to catch up on the thread.

 Basically the person was speculating that DS is being interviewed by Sung Shi Won from Reply 1997 because her character was a screenwriter.  Shi Won was introduced to DS by BR which they mentioned in one of the present day scenes.  BR is a lawyer/prosecutor just like Yoon Yoon Jae is so they met through him. She goes on to speculate that DS is being interviewed for a screenplay/script that Shi Won is writing which could be this Reply 1988 series. This seems plausible even though I don't think it gives any insight as to who the husband is.  

But considering this is loosely based on the real life Baduk  player, the China trip in Ep 9 just sounds too much like the interview with his wife that someone posted before.  In that interview she said her husband had a baby face but she started to see him as a man in a Baduk tournament in Taiwan.  So is DS the wife of a Baduk player?

We shall find out soon. (I say yes BTW).

@taeksun OMO I cried  Thank you! Just beautiful description of Taek! I love his character so much (his character touched me in so many ways)! I salute PBG for giving justice to Taek's character! I will surely miss uri Taekiii
