I agree wholeheartedly that "DS is not a child bride. Rather than ship her hard with anyone, my primary desire is to see her grow, see her mature, and see her fight for her education. At 18, that’s what matters."

If it's any ordinary K-drama, the structure would've been reversed. Of 20 episodes, the first four would have been set in the characters's youth and established the "first love" idea, and the rest (sixteen eps) show the whole saga of mucky angsty "you-love-me-you-love-not" love n-angle. And some apparently stuck in this mode, expecting similar "structure" and exposition in this "reversed"  distribution.  Added: That another contender for the "main otp" line is easily dismissed  for being "late" to the game. When the writer is actually developing him along with the heroine. In plain sight, nonetheless!

Me too! Well ... kind of. These days all I do is sleuth over art and tell people if it's a forgery.

Hi guys. I've been a lurker and decide to post for the first time on this thread. I like the vibe i get from this thread. You guys are awesome. Anyway just watched ep 16 with sub and this is some of my thougts. I notice several ironies in this ep:

-TK stepping back from confessing his feelings despite his competitive nature.
-JH feelings for DS is noticed by the one person he's stepping back for (TK)
-TK stepping back for JH despite JH act of hiding his feelings was because of TK confession to the boys in the first place.
- JH mom and DR were eager to win and practicing hard but they lost. On the other hand NE goes to final eventho he's not confident about his singing earlier and didnt really practice beforehand as much as mom and DR.
- DS starts worrying abt college and studying seriously for the first time eventho she never even bother before
-when JH said "how come there are no secret in this neighborhood?"
Well there are. Quite a lot actually. Eventho ppl will found out about it eventually (like JB dating, SW BR dating, JH feelings etc).

What I notice too while watching
- in bus DS openly yawns in front of DR  while she turns her head when burping in front of TK. This just shows she sees them in diff light. She could give a damn in front of DR, while she trys to act a bit more refine or girly (?) in front of TK. Whether she notices it herself ot not.
- DS called TK crazy bastard in the bus. But when DR called TK nasty bastard about being super competitive DS defend him by saying that he's not nasty and its just simple immaturity.
I dont know if im overanalyzing things but usually, you dont want other ppl to talk bad about someone who's close to you like family member or your partner. But its okay if you yourself call them names because you know you dont meant it in a mean or malicious way but more endearing and  more like "i cant help to love them even if they are crazy" kind of way. So yeah. i dont know if im making any sense.
-DS waits in front of the phone for his call before she goes to sleep in her room. And by her words about he's not calling yet it seems that she has been waiting for a while. I mean she doesnt have to wait in front of the phone exactly. She could just wait in her room and study or whatever while waiting. And came out of her room when he calls or have her mom shout for her or something. The point is she's anticipating his call. Add to the fact that she reminds him to call her before. So yeah. Shes kinda eager and maybe excited too i think. So when he call and said he had something important to do, she ask to comfirm " is it really important?"

PS. Did any of you guys try doing that cornet bread thing DB did to MO?  I did. And failed. Lol.

Maybe it's not meant anything but when DS brings fish cake in ep 16, I keep wondering why she bought foods that he even didn't ask her to buy for him or her family didn't ask DS to bought it for TK.. Isn't the timing kind of weird? The night before he has to to china for his competition.. It's like she wants to meet him but need an excuse so she doesn't look too suspicious..

And the song sad fate by nami, that played during TK scene really suited SunTaek.. And I don't know why, I keep imagining that in next episode TK will restrain himself, not to pat DS head..

@mellinadear  I used to go there a lot back then before TK was introduced as a strong contender, when things were solely about JH/DS and Mr. JH was everywhere. It was fine when we just settled with "JH is the husband". I remember posting a long richard simmons comment explaining why I was unable to ship JH/DS (this was all before TK entered the game) and how JH was having a one-sided love that the chemistry literally was unnoticeable. I was trying to seek someone who shared the same thought. yea got ignored completely, like this bytch is crazy LOL. So I forced myself to see the very idea "JH is the husband", not only i failed to do so but also packed up and moved here. I remember @minibunny was the very first one who spoke up on the main thread about how people there just disrespectfully brushed off TK's existence. Kudos to you girl  . When things started steaming up I did lurk at JH-DS thread, and people could be over the top with "why don't they just make their own thread (TK shippers) and stop shoving TK-DS down our throats" or "thank god, they finally got their own thread". And I was like damn! over a drama? all because of different points of view? So when some of you mentioned about some JH shippers lurked here and got butthurt over our discussions or called us ridiculous or delusional, I found it funny, it doesn't bother me. 

Oh well, I wish people could be more open-minded and willing to take other opinions into consideration instead of just ignoring or judging the others simply because they don't go well with theirs. But what can you do? I guess we only like to hear what we wanna hear and believe what we wanna believe *shrugs*

And i'm saying this again, I'm not good at reading into the lines and have sharp eyes like you guys, but TK is the husband. After watching episode 16 and judging how DS just does a 180, goes cold turkey on JH like before, and how it doesn't even bother her if he's there or not, I've confirmed it. As the love line progressed, it's hard to not think TK is the husband. Just wait girls, drinks are on me

Yeah, I remember that time . Someone even called tk-ds shippers for being drama queens. Now JH-DS shippers are the drama queens. They really should be happy tk back out. It give jh the greenlight to go for it.

So I had been pondering on some things:

The Second Lead

The Good: Reply 1997 Tae Woong

TW was a good second lead in that they provided the back story of his first love, SW older sister. By doing so, the audience felt sad for what he had to go through but they couldn’t help but see how his infatuation for SW stemmed from the love he had for her sister. So though we understood him, we mourned for what he didn’t have with the older sister NOT SW. They also kept him fairly distanced from the narrative and also provided a substantial amount of time with his future love and wife. He also was the older, mature brother, so the audience did not feel that the two brother’s relationship would be destroyed in the long term. Overall, a satisfying end.

The Bad: Reply 1994 Chilbong

HAHAhaHA. I honestly felt like I saw a puppy get hurt and left abandoned…But back to the story. So CB was such a pitiful character, whose outsider status just further made him look lonely. No family, friends, and his wife was a one sec copy version of the main girl…below I will go in detail how the writer would avoid creating another CB and something better than TW.

The Better/Best: Reply 1988 ???? 

So with all the installments, the spark of interest of the second lead towards the main girl is shown. When these sparks are shown, there will be viewers attracted to the light they produce. So as a writer, you hope to not punish these viewers for being attracted to the second lead and give them a realistic reason why not all is meant to be. Reply 1988 is based on the premise of family, so the no family/friend part of CB can not happen again here, but because the two guys are not blood brothers, the writer has to be more delicate in showing how the relationship between the two survives the triangle. For the audience, we must understand along with the second lead why they still value the friendship of main couple and would remain friends after. Right now the narrative has had one person really and I mean really go through this process; JH.

Below are my guiding principles to creating closure for the viewers regarding the second lead.

1# JH can not HATE TK aka the two guys must remain friends at the end

Scenes where JH has been shown dealing with his resentment towards TK friendship. (not just TK, but their friendship!)

EP 12: Several scenes depict JH being upset with TK/DS relationship ( and even going back to ep 11 when he waits for DS to return from TK’s house) which include: watching them laugh together after the swearing session, when the squad all leave their houses at the same time, the whole time at the dinner. But all of these conclude him to come back to still care for TK. He can’t hate him. HE CAN NOT HATE HIM. However, though Bora gave this in the voice over, at this time JH has still not fully reached this important piece of information, which is very realistic because emotions take their time to evolve. Also another question, in a triangle, who is left with feelings of hate? The second lead right? That is why the 2^nd lead fans hate on the main lead. Considering what happened with CB, the writer must make sure the 2^nd is shown overcoming his hate towards the lead so that fans can also overcome it with him. (and so far successful with the amount of times it's been mentioned JH and TK to just marry each other)

Ep 13: JH is still struggling with TK and DS interactions as he watches DS go to TK’s house. However, this episode also with the guy at the concert calling DS pretty shows how JH with any other guy is very territorial about the girl he likes. Hence this scene confirmed that the looks JH was giving most likely stemmed from similar place to how he felt regarding the guy from the concert. But an important distinction in how he acts upon the root of the feelings is made.

Ep 14: Again JH still struggling as he watches TK take fruit to DS house, TK and DS eating at bday celebration, TK and DS China picture, looking at pizza box given by TK and the shirt given by DS. However, JH also notices how TK left for his tournament later so he could be there for his bday and was the one who got him a gift.

Ep 15: We didn’t even fully see JH reaction to seeing TK rest his head on DS, but that just showed how he cant stomach the sight of the two being together. Yeahhh not good. But, then the hospital scene happens and he waits for TK and thanks him and ties his shoelace. Now TK told the chief that JH dad is a RELATIVE!!! This is important. Up until this part JH has been giving looks at TK’s actions with DS and it has been bothering him. TK has been bothering him. Their friendship has been bothering him. The fact that he can’t go actively pursue DS romantically because of TK must be making him resentful. But then you have the guy you are sending look too show how he cares about you and you just can’t hate him.

EP 16: JH in the beginning scene looked to still be dealing with his feelings but the movie scene at TK house showed the fact their friendship is still strong. This episode also played with the viewers perception of TK, and the scene with his dad and the end broke down any views from anti-tk fans that he is not a worthy person of being DS husband or JH friend. 

Beyond EP 16: I think by ep 16 it showed that JH has overcome his negative thoughts towards TK but now he realizes that he has caused TK to not confess and I was sensing guilt on his part. What other way to show that the second lead doesn’t hate the main lead then have him be the one that reunites the main lead with his love?

#2 The second lead can not be pitiful!

There are ways the writer has made JH not pitiful compared to CB.

1)The whole squad doesn’t know that he liked DS. In 1994, everyone knew that CB liked NJ and it was just embarrassing to watch. In 1988, JH feelings can remain contained between the people involved. His ego will not be further attacked in the future scenes when the squad gathers and I think the 2^nd lead deserves the privacy of his unrequited love.

2) A really great family. There is a reason why they are getting the most amount of CFs.

3) His “opponent” is not actively doing sexual things with the main girl. ( how many kiss scenes CB shippers had to endure)

4) The main girl didn’t out right reject him and did like him at one point but it just would not measure up ( rp 1997 vs 1994)

The second lead needs closure and honestly TK has not been shown going through the necessary ways to gain closure from his first love and the final scene just drove the point that if TK was to be the second lead it would be the saddest thing to watch because we never got to seen overcoming his feelings towards JH and DS being together, and DS not being in his life in the way he wanted. Again the writers could totally have 1994!TK be all cool and over his first love but they haven’t BUILT for that story. They have done the exact opposite.

Again in ep 15. It was JH that had overcome what he felt for TK and got the wake up call that TK loves him. TK never voiced/showed negative things towards JH. The fact it was JH that had to deal with those feelings points towards him being the second lead in my books.

Another thing that the Writer had to be careful about in 1988 is

the Main girl.

In 1994, I would argue it was not CB character that suffered the most but Na Jung. Because over the yelling of Trash-CB, she was lost. She was called a female dog. She was seen as cold and heartless and pathetic and needy…the list of negative traits go on. I honestly feel the writer should feel really sorry to Go Ara for giving her that situation. So what did the Writer do in 1988 so that the triangle would not collapse on the main girl?

She had the main girl reciprocate the second leads feelings and it was the second lead that drove the pain. Hence, everyone felt sorry for the main girl instead of angry. She also did not have TK actively confessing to her to create an actual triangle that would make her look like a “cheater/two timer”. Therefore, I saw the need for the sisterly/motherly aspect of their relationship brought out each time because as soon as it was like seen as a girlfriend type role, JH shippers would start feeling resentment towards DS and saying she was leading JH on. Therefore, the sexual tension that JH shippers keep saying is missing from TK and DS can only really come after the secound lead has moved on or else you have the unpretty picture of a sad JH sitting on his bed while TK and DS are getting a little bit closer...yeah would not do well with shippers feelings for DS or the ratings. The writer has also created a scenario where the viewers can be on the journey with the main girl in her realizing who she wants to spend her life with ( perfectly established by DR). During/After the time skip, DS can mature and in doing so we, the audince, will have more respect that the choice she made was the right choice.( aka 1994 vs 1997)

One thing I've noticed/love about this thread is how and why we ship TK and DS.

We do not take the "OTP" face value. Just because one character is a tsundere...that he's automatically the "husband".

We do not become irritated with the writer just because they haven't kissed yet. 

The story does not call for a kiss nor a near fist fight I see some was expecting. 

We understand each character and why they act like that at that particular moment. 

I feel that our eyes, ears and hearts are open to what the story is trying to tell.

Not because one character was the first to be introduced, or had the most scene.

We notice the little things that makes a huge impact. 

We see the growth each character is undergoing and how it might be significant to who they might become in the future.

How ever the writer and PD wants to end this series, I feel our thread will survive (and hopefully, jumping in joy?). Not only for Taek, JH, and DS but for the whole neighborhood family. 

Althought we are not saints and angels, occasional frustration and word war is needed because...well...it is a shippers thread after all.

In the future scene too,when NL went over to visit his sister, there was a picture of 2 deers on a shelf. It was 4 in TK's room but 2 in future scene. I'm delulu right? Lol
