Tricky because he killed the monks without mercy. (And casually remarked to General Park that they deserve to die).

Misunderstanding that made him to become one actually. Yet despite the impression ,he still have his own autonomy who lives or not.

It started when he "killed those wolves" (Chaeryung 's story to HS validates it)  . When the Kangs sent him to a mountain with a pack of wolves, he survived. Thus the terror it brought to villagers . The rumor escalated, plus the scar on his face made him more ruthless in the eyes of everyone. (Only to find out it was because of his bestfriend  Pat Pat being the sacrificial tree to fight the wolves.)

Funny because nobody actually saw his scar. Even the royal family didnt see how it looks like until Eun's birthday. Then people during the rain ritual was surprised that "hey , where is the scar?" which made the  360 degree shift of perception towards him. He become regal/royal to people's eyes.

It was a predetermined impression, more of a horn effect/fundamental attribution to him as a person. Poor dude was not given the chance to prove his worth, that he is not that cruel they thought him to be. Yet the perception was by default thus he took at as it and even used it to his advantage (so thus the situation when 14th and Hae Soo encountered the thugs , So only pointed the sword and threaten them.).

That is why I appreciate the writer to set the complicated character of Wang So. It is not as easy as knight in your shining armor prince where he would kill for the glory of love. His choices will always under the same denominator. He wants to survive like anyone else. Yet , for now, as noob as he is when in comes to love, he is giving his all without reservation.

It was that part especially that made me question if Wang So was misunderstood or not. That he felt justified in killing all of those fallen monks and he was only hurt by his mom rejecting him. And although it was brave of him to be willing to fight the escort that was going to bring HS into the palace in episode 6, he didn't pause at the idea that his brothers might die because of his actions.

I like your explanation of his character and why he is the way he is.

@fuyukoneko Good thing that you brought that up. I did raise an eyebrow that he was pretty much like "your point?" when YH brought up that if they opposed a royal decree, they will all be dead. He was only focus on getting HS away and consequences later whether the rest of the brothers died or not. Even when HS said she was fine and wanted to get down, he didn't until he looked at Baek Ah who signaled him to let her down. And he still asked her one more time if she was sure lol Though it's still consistent with his character. He tends to act first in the moment even though he knows there will be dire consequences later. The thing is I do think he has a view on things that he bases his actions on. Whether this version in the drama have him killed more than one brother  (I do think he'll definitely kill 9th prince), So will feel justified in doing so just like he did with the monks. I honestly had no issues with him killing them tbh. They were gonna die anyway since the CP was also headed that way. It's just that So's reason was to protect his evil mom not really for the sake of the royal family.

In the next episode:

Wook to Soo: "I missed you each and every second"

Wook to So: "A prince and a maid getting married?"

You have already made your choices!   BOY PLEASE STOP!

Chingu @Gabi Bros... That man has no right to even dare to tell Hae Soo he missed her. I'm like WTF I see husband problem. He tells his brother he won't dare go against the King but he mad when she returns his bracelet. He is just so darn irritating in my eyes.  I agree he should stop chingu and let Hae Soo go since he can't protect her.

@glacial HkUo Hou aYou are correct even when she was being held hostage he had no intention of hurting Hae Soo at all. In fact remember the scene when WW tried  to take Hs from him, he held her possesively, I think that subconsciously he did not want to let her go but to cover up for pulling her closer to him he said "why should I let her go because of her he lost his only witness." He thought she had to pay for it but I knew then it was all a bluff.

@chrissydiva I didn't think there was anything wrong with him killing the fallen monks turned assassins or the possibility he kills some of his brothers. And I'm hoping WS's stops forgiving his mom and dad (even if I overlook the emotional abuse, what kind of parents leave their kid with a woman who locks up their child without food and water?) and retaliates against them in the future.

I was more asking what kind of person do we think he is. I really like that he's not depicted as a perfect hero or a master manipulator like the Chinese drama's 4th prince.

I think if soo didn't show up in his life, he could literally ended up as a vicious crazy king who laugh after killing eun in soo's vision or hallucination or what ever it was.

In the palace he now calls home, only because baek ah and soo are there. Not before that.

His father, mother, the people treats him like a monster or a shield for cp survival. He's not a madman after all of that is a miracle.

He has all these flaws that makes him so much more lovable to those who really knows him.

He said it himself best, he doesn't know how to be with people. :tears:Ì

And I've just realized I'm sorely outnumbered by all you brainiacs mouse-girl-emoticon-12.gif

hey ya @MadraRua! brainiacs? don't tell me this 800+ pages are all analysis?

is no one swooning over hot and magnetic wang soo looks? 10

is no one developing diabetes from sighing and savouring the OTP moments? onion

is no one is wondering where wang yo (the evil brother of wang soo) gets his amazing orange earrings? hahahahha.. actually, even the ladies have some pretty jewelry here -- very delicate flowers all abound. where can I buy that? there has to be knock-off cheap versions of that floating in the market somewhere right?.. kekekek... wow

oh dear! will try to keep analysis short and post some fun stuff now and then! :D

@Lmanglanot random really, but insightful. Wookie is conflicted.... because he does have ambition and has responsibilities as the first born male to be the head of his family and probably his clan. I will not elaborate since I don't want to spoil your viewing cause you only watched 2eps but yes you are on the right track.... :)

thanks @zenya22; this drama was not really on my radar when it first started airing for several reasons -- it is a saeguk and I stay away from that because I usually get lost. predominantly filled with gazillion men characters who all dress alike like army men. you know it is a problem for many viewers because they always put name cards for viewers! hahahha... but those name cards are often not subtitled and so it makes it difficult for me... and funnily enough, this sounded like an sageuk version of the reply series where folks spent loads of hours and energy debating and guessing who would be the husband and then getting frustrated with each other. and then there is the original version -- I tried to watch it but for whatever reason, was bored and dropped it. was aware of the synopsis and always found it meh. so am sure that when you watch it, you feel her love for 4th prince but the synopsis basically made it sound like 4th prince was her second choice -- you know, she didn't get the guy she actually wanted, the 8th prince, and so settled for the guy who did want her to make her life easier. basically, mr. right now instead of mr. right and that is just tragic whether it is real life or dramas. I mean, who wants an OTP where the gal settles because she couldn't get what she actually wanted?

but the recaps of the last two episodes was interesting that it made me check it out and I feel good enough to keep watching -- wangsu won't be her second choice, the leftovers in the fridge, but instead, be her first choice, the pick one makes in restaurant because thats what you are hungry for... while thinking about haesoo, wangsu and wook, was reminded of that old 80s movie "some kind of wonderful" -- have folks seen it? it follows a typical teen romance setup but is still ultimately interesting. so like most teen romances, the lead is in love with someone who is conventionally pretty and fits the norms for popular. but as the lead gets to know the object of his/her choice, they are hit from the left field with an unexpected dish -- it doesn't fit their preconceived notions and neither is it conventionally pretty. so the lead resists and keeps steering towards his/her object of affection. then there is a point where they realize that the object of affection fails the mark for what they actually need and want and can admit that this left field ball person is who gets their heart beating and fits with their heart. they also find that they can never be themselves and happy they are with the object of affection, whereas there is freedom to be themselves with the left field ball person because the connection is not based on typical attraction..

so haesoo's trajectory seems to follow a typical teen romance setup in that way. wook is conventionally emotionally pretty. from what I have seen in the beginning, he seems to say and do the right things. whereas, wangsu in comparison is not pretty emotionally either. he lashes out like a wounded animal who is trying to defend itself. but yet, there is an instant connection with the two -- haesoo herself is out of the box for her time. she does not react like the original haesoo would. so just as haesoo is an outsider, so is wangsu. and what I found interesting is that when wangsu is mad at her for the whole not-being-able-to-find-assassin mess, she responds with tears that she wants to live. and if he wasn't going to help (he told the assassin to go ahead and kill her), then she had to help herself. he wasn't going to do it for her, was he? and whats wrong with wanting to live? -- that is her question and is also wangsu's. just like her, he wants to live and be accepted but since no one is going to do it for him, he is forced to push, shove, and aggressively do whatever to survive. so on a very basic level, they get each other. whereas, for wook, haesoo will always be a mystery and she will have to shed her modernism in order to fit -- one of the recap comments mentioned that haesoo was not reacting like a modern woman. well yea, thats a result of her association with wook -- she cant' be herself. now, with wook out of the picture, hope we see the real modern haesoon again and see her build a relationship with wangsu and not fall into one because no one is there and she is lonely. if she chooses wangsu like fridge leftovers, then this drama is highly stupid! :sweatingbullets:

And more taking in consideration that Hae Soo would have been hanged if 4th didn't arrive to make some time (8th was not there)...Ji Mong was kind of late. When 8th prince decided to protect YeonHwa (even knowing she is guilty) and his family, he decided to let Hae Soo die.
